Fine for a trim (if you're a guy), but NOT for color.

I learned a valuable lesson from going here.  Don't scrimp on your hair.  Saving money is awesome, but think long and hard before going somewhere just because its "cheap".

The atmosphere is kind of cool -- a very "New York", "downtown" vibe.  And getting a stylist was simple enough...until I tried to explain to her what I wanted.  There was a bit of a language barrier, so I started to get nervous after telling her several times that I did NOT want to "try another color" aside from my usual blonde highlights.

It seemed like she took a lot of care in doing the color, but after she took the foil off, there was a big discolored patch on the front of my head.  Cue freakout.  Instead of apologizing for her mistake, she scolded me for having "moved" during the processing period. She assured me she could fix it, so she then applied a special corrective gloss -- which promptly burned my scalp!

Despite the pain, the corrective stuff seemed to do the trick, and we moved on to the hair cut.  I had only come in for a trim, but I was pretty surprised when she was "done" after only about 3 minutes!  She used no clips or anything -- just made quick cuts at the bottom of my hair!  I could have done that at home, for free.

When it was all said and done, the cut was slightly lopsided and the highlights were brassy.  And now that it's been a month it's super lopsided and super brassy.  Time to make another appointment -- somewhere else!

Went here for the first time today because I really REALLY needed to get the split ends cutt off and I needed it done for a reasonable price so that I didn't resort to something terrible like cutting it myself.
Bad idea.
Going to Astor Hair? Good idea!

Walked down into the..er..dungeon I guess. Walked up to the corner. Was greeted by man with stereotypical, movie caliber Brooklyn accent. Was flagged down by an exuberant lady named Martha who was going to be my hairdresser dujour.
Now, the second I walked into this place I was like "Ok. This could either be a really great experience or worse than taking a dump in the woods...." Fortunately it turned out to be a really great experience.
I liked the vibe, characters of all sorts cutting hair, getting their hair cut, loitering, whatever. No one was loud or obnoxious or distracting, and I enjoyed the picture of Stephen Colbert on the door.
If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.
I liked that Martha really took her time with me even though it was a simple cut. Everything looks perfectly even and she did a great job blow drying it. So smooth!

Rita at Astor Place is Multi-talented, unique and super cool!!!

I guess I've been amazingly lucky to have found someone as as wonderful as Rita. I've been going to Rita for over a year now and she is incredible! I trust her completely to do whatever she wants. I have tried lots of other places and stylists and I have horror stories, believe me. So I am so happy I found her at the very affordable Astor Place.

Rita has this incredible energy and she is as sweet and funny as they come. I can't imagine a stylist being any better or nicer than her. She is also fully licensed cosmetologist and offers specialized facials and skin-care in her private room in the back of the place. She is also the only one there that has a personal assistant. She is like one stop shopping for all your beauty needs. Cool haircuts, highlites, color, facials...everything! I really can't say enough nice things about her. In fact, I sometimes make appointments with a couple of friends so we all can get our Rita-fix at once. She makes us all look gorgeous and then it's a night out on the town for the girls! If you just want a plain Jane cookie cutter haircut, there are lots of people who can do that sort of thing. If you want someone really talented and special, well, I HIGHLY recommend Rita. She is THE BEST!

Oh yeah, a little tid bit of help for you guys. When you call the main number, make sure you ask for Rita's cell # and make your appoinment directly with her. It is a BIG place and they have many stylists there - so to avoid confusion call Rita directly. She will respond quickly becasue she always does and will get you right in!

I hope my review is helpful to you guys! All the best!

Nikki

Jose is the best!
For over 22 years Jose has consistently given me the best haircuts. He's fast, he's thorough (always layering -- no just-trim-around-the-edges job, like other cutters) and now he's cutting my son's hair for the past 8 years, too!
I always loved the bohemian atmosphere and staff. A NYC icon.

Since I moved here last year I've been trying to find a barber who not only knows what he's doing with a skin fade but doesn't empty my wallet while he's at it. A couple months ago this one guy (who's name or shop I won't mention) left me so bad off I decided to just shave it all off. I asked a coworker if he knew of a cheap place I could go and he sent me to see his barber at Astor. When I walked in I thought the place didn't look very polished for a New York shop but I figured I had nothing to loose after the last overpriced maniac had his way with my head. When I got to Xavier's chair I explained what happened and that I wanted to just shave it all. He told me no problem he would do whatever I wanted but he was pretty sure there was enough left to work with that he could fix it. I told him to see what he could do and if not we would just start from scratch. To tell the truth I was amazed. This guy was done in what seemed like no time and it actually looked like a real haircut. The funny part was while I was happy I wasn't gonna have to go fully bald Xavier seemed unhappy with the results and told me to come back the next week when my hair had grown out some. I did and this time my hair looked even better. This guy knows what he's doing and doesn't leave lines like most barbers. The price is so good I would expect to pay twice as much if not more for the quality. I definitely wouldn't let anyone else touch my hair.

A barbershop worthy of Sweeny Todd. Todd's Vengeance!

Before: Shabby hair, thinking of a good cut and something new. Anyhow a clean or cool look.

During: Barber taking to his buzzer like my head was some cheap filthy carpet. Spent time looking at a fight in the shop. Looking annoyed and pissed when returning eyes from The US Open on TV to the lawn he was mowing. The actual "cut" took all of 5 mins, cause I asked him to trim a little more off the front seeing how a lawn might as well be even and look a little less ridiculous. This man comes from Rikers Island barber shop. And that's the cut you'll get. His island is in fact right next to the front counter, to the right. Do not go right.

After: I marveled at how my mom telepathically controlled a big gruffy old dude to give me the old home buzz.

Verdict: My roommie swore by Astor Place Hairstylist, and seeing him and other reviews, the shop may well be good, with the right stylist. I should have asked him for the name of his barber. Do not go and try your luck on your hair... by leaving the front counter dude to direct you to any butcher stand.

I'll be wearing caps for a while.

My favorite part about Astor Place is that I'm in and out of there in about thirty minutes or less. I don't make appointments and I've never had to wait. Because of the busy schedule I normally have, I love that I can do this and I love that they are open so late. I also love how inexpensive they are!

I've been here numerous times and I've always had a different stylist. I'm incredibly laid-back when it comes to hair and very rarely go in with a specific idea of what I want, which means that many times I let them do their thing (though, because of my ever-changing hairstyles I've had several different kinds of cuts there and I've always been happy with the results). So, I'm not sure I'd recommend this place to someone who is very, very particular about their haircut. On the other hand, I probably wouldn't be friends with someone who is very, very particular about their haircut.

This place rocks, and I'll probably never get my hair cut anywhere else as long as I live in New York.

I went today with a friend after reading all of the mixed reviews, and I'm so glad I did. The place really does look like a factory with barbers and stylists spread across the basement, and the guy at the desk is quick to send you off to whoever is available. I requested Rosa after reading the good reviews about her on here and she was just as amazing as everyone says. She glanced at the pictures that I showed her, and warned me that my hair was curlier than the girl's in the picture. After washing my hair, she cut, blowdried, and flat ironed my hair. She checked in with me in while she was cutting to make sure that it wasn't too short, and in the end I have a new gorgeous bob that I absolutely love. For $35 you absolutely can't beat it. Go to Rosa!

I've had good and bad haircuts - some costing $10, some costing $100.   When I moved to NY 10 years ago, I would have never considered Astor. I thought it was for students.

About 3 years ago, was I proven wrong.  I went on to a review site like Yelp,( but not Yelp).   All the guys were were raving about Jose.   So I go to Astor, ask for Jose.  He said "I'm busy. Go see my friend Alberto."

Since then Alberto has been giving me the best haircuts money can buy - all for under $20.   Not only does he give you a phenomenal haircut - he entertains and genuinely a nice guy.

If you are a guy that likes very DETAILED and CLEAN haircuts, ALBERTO is the guy.

Would be a decent place to go if I were a dude. But women, unless you have straight long hair and ONLY need a really simple trim, I would skip this place.

I have a short cut with a lot of layers. I just wanted a trim and for her to take some weight out. My hair cutter spent LITERALLY about 6 minutes and then was "done." Judging by her own hair, make-up and style, I shouldn't have expected anything more than what I got - essentially a mullet. I asked her to trim a little more off the back and I think she tacked on $3 extra because I asked her to do 30 seconds more work. I still have a mullet BTW.

The burly dudes at the front desk were so cold and unwelcoming.

It was my 1st hair cut in NY since I moved here a year ago. I'd been putting it off for so long because I assumed all prices were gonna be insanely high. As a college student, I can't afford $50 trims. However, I've finally found my cheap AND good NY hair salon! :) Who ever said you can't have both?

I'm one who has always visited prim & classy hair salons, so when I first arrived at Astor Place Hairstylist, I couldn't keep a look of incredulity off my face. But if you look past the derelict entrance and old mustiness of the place, there is in fact, a certain charm to its frump. Good oldies were playing in the background at a comfortable volume. There was a nice sense of community amongst the coworkers, and all the customers seemed really chummy with their stylists.

My hairstylist was called Inis. Aside from the fact that she washed my hair in almost boiling hot water, she was pretty good. She was gentle and considerate, meaning she didn't yank my hair about like some hair stylists I've had. Also, she followed instructions which I think is most important. A hairstylist should always respect your wishes instead of unleashing their pent up creativity upon your hair unless you request something new.

Women-beware!!! I'd been growing out my short hair and was excited that my hair was finally long enough for a more interesting cut. I'm not sure who my stylist was (some girl) but she BUTCHERED my hair! Did NOT listen to my (perfectly clear) instructions, made it super short, lopsided, with no shape (or skill!) whatsoever. I ended up looking remarkably like a 12 year old boy with a bad haircut. I agree with some of the other female reviewers- don't skimp on your hair! It'll end up costing you more in the long run because you'll have to go somewhere else to get it fixed.

Astor Place is all about hype, skeptics, and ultimate satisfaction.  Hype because when one asks around for a place to get a good affordable haircut (for Asian males it's tough because our hair is super straight...blah blah blah, it's just hard to find a good $20 haircut without having to go home and find out they screwed it up and you have to go somewhere else to fix the mistake...anyways), but everyone recommends Astor Place and raves about this Russian guy named Jay.  "Yo, Jay is the best, he's this Russian guy who cuts all of Manhattan's Asian males' hair."  Okay, so I make a reservation, asked for Jay.  This is when the skeptics start to make one nervous when the arrows on the signs of Astor Place tell you to go down.
Entering into a basement floor with the heavy essence of fluorescence, you approach the unapproachable man behind the booth, "Hi, uh i made an appointment with Jay..."
"Yeah, walk straight back to the guy in the back."
Now, when people say "Russian" I expect Jay to be this tall guy with designer jeans on and a ed hardy shirt on, but for about 5 minutes this guy did not exist as I walked around, stared at this slightly older gentleman with khakis and a polo cutting a fellow Asian man's hair.  "This can't be Jay..."  Well it was and when I sat in the seat he just took over, without saying a word he knew exactly what I wanted and how I wanted it.  At the end he spun the chair around toward the big mirror and said "Best looking man in Manhattan."  For a good 4 minutes I felt just that, the ultimate satisfaction.

Any place where a hasidic jew can "fade-up" a brotha proper is  a good place for me.  I love the diversity here.  Like coming into the U.N. to get your haircut.  I have been getting my haircut here since I moved to New York in the summer of 2001.  The only problem is that it has become increasingly expensive over the years.  Regardless, this place has my loyalty and the incremintal price increases are worthit. Always quality.

Been here a few times to watch other people get their hair cut. I was always a little too scared to go myself (even though I have no problem going to supercuts when I want to be cheap). My friend and I were on a girly date getting our nails and hair done, and we weren't having any luck getting an appointment where we wanted to go, or getting walkins, so we just decided to risk it and go for astor place hair. We had Regina cut our hair. She was a really sweet woman, maybe eastern european, and had been working there for over 20 years. She did a great job!!! My friend and I pretty much wanted the same cut (we have the same hair, mines just longer... we just realized this), trim the bangs (in my case, recut - I had been growing them out during summer), trim the back, layers. She did razor cut a bit, but it was mostly scissors. Spent a decent amount of time on each of us too, and took time to blow dry nicely. Our hair looks great, yay!

GO TO FRAN!******

So it's about 8:30 at night one random evening, and I decide to make a drastic change. I walk into Astor Hair and Fran, though about to leave, graciously agrees to take me in. I had very long, damaged blond hair that I wanted chopped all off into a pixie cut and dyed some kind of brown color. I show her four different photos of the idea (Shannyn Sossoman, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Katie Holmes) and say "something like this that will work on me". She takes one look, and with wit, enthusiasm, smiles and attitude, transforms my hair into something INCREDIBLE. the major cut, style PLUS color was only $75. FAR less than I have ever paid and such a tremendous experience letting her do it- she's so fun and an amazing stylist. bottom line.. GO TO FRAN. I am sooooo beyond happy with what she did for me, with hardly any description from me and nothing but a glance at a photo. she even chose the color of it herself because I had no idea. and it was exactly what it needed to be. she's immensely talented and a joy to sit in the chair for!

plus, she just got back from maternity leave and she needs to support her baby boy :-)

Quick and easy. Oh, and cheap too. Can't really beat that. But the stylists are not always consistent, so if you're looking for a precision cut, I'd suggest going elsewhere.

Good service, good location, good vibe. At Astor Place Hair, you get what you pay for.

Let me start by saying I've searched high and low for a great, reasonably priced hair salon in the city. From Bumble and Bumble to Avalon Salon & Day Spa in the West Village to Frederic Fekkai, all of which charged an arm and a leg for a wonderful experience and a decent cut and color, still didn't make the $300 or more worth it. Yesterday I went out on a limb and made an appt with Rita at Astor Place Hair Designers after reading 407 reviews. I was a little late for my appt, no big deal, as Rita is super cool. For $40 I got the most amazing cut, great wash and blow dry, along with a 20 minute evaluation. I have canceled my appt with Bumble and Bumble for color to give Rita a chance. Will definitely provide an update. Hope this was helpful to all the girls in Manhattan that watch their money dwindle away for an average hair experience and a cappuccino.

For my first haircut in New York, I wandered down to Astor Hair.  I'd read the reviews and was a little nervous, but I figured any place I can actually afford to get my hair done is bound to be a crap shoot, and at least this would be a crap shoot with atmosphere.

Now I have wavy/curly hair which I dye more often than I should and cut less often.  I've had bad cuts and mediocre cuts, and I tend to not get my hopes up.  I got Anna, and told her what I wanted (layers and side bangs, boring, I know) and she far exceeded my expectations.  My new cut is super cute, light and bouncy and low-maintenance.  I can't stop touching it!  I'm pretty thrilled and will definitely go back to see Anna again.

In the 10 years I have been going to Astor Place, I have never been disappointed.  While this is by no means the fanciest of barber shops or hair salons, in fact, it is a basement with 40 someodd barbers, the cuts are very reasonable and as good as they come.

Ladies, I am not sure I would recommend Astor to you as much as I would to guys.  I definitely see many women getting their hair done there, but the majority of clients are men.

Astor is a NY institution.  The walls are plastered with photos of celebrities, all of whom have gotten their hair cut at Astor over the years.

I am reluctant to put this out there, but when you go, see Sarah.  She gives the best haircut of anyone in the place.

All in all, you can't go wrong with a great haircut that costs only $14 and is in Manhattan!  Oh, and Astor is CASH ONLY!!!

I walked in at 5:30 on a weekday without an appointment, and someone was there to cut my hair. I told her what I wanted, she rinsed my hair, and cut it exactly as I requested. It took less than half an hour (and I have a TON of hair. I have a huge mop of curly hair, so don't think this review is for a standard guy hair cut. My hair can be a project) and she offered me some tips (my hair was particularly bad when I got it cut- so I deserved the frizz talk) and it was all FOR ONLY FIFTEEN BUCKS.

Yelpers, I understood going into here that it was going to be a crap shoot, but who rolled sevens? Yep, this guy.

The Russian Roulette of Hair joints.

My homie is Mohammud, the Moroccan smoothster- expert in the curly locks. There's been times he's left my hair fan-fuckin-tabulous. There's been times that I've almost cried after see what he's done with the curls...but you know what- the bastardo DOES have a vision: my hair ends up growing into this amazing shape, body, texture, etc.

However, I don't know how much more my heart can take of this tumultuous tress affair. It doesn't matter that my date with ol' Mohammud is just $20...I think Imma have to break up with him soon. *sigh*

This will probably be my new go to barber spot.  It's quick, costs $15, and is a huge space so it looks like there should never be a wait.  I went in on a Sunday afternoon and went straight in.  They don't offer a warm shave or anything like that from what I could tell, but I think the speed is worth more than the nice few seconds of warm shaving cream.

I, Drew "can you please go get me a Diet Lemon Snapple?" Tinnin, solemnly swear never to step foot in SUPERCUTS ever again.

It's nothing personal and I havent suddenly decided as my new years resolution to stop supporting any and all businesses that subscribe to the corporate model just to reassure you.

I just now know where I would prefer to get my hair cut, trimmed and styled for the rest of my days here in the old frog and toe. Its kind of like finding the church you want to be married in or the ocean side cliff you want your ashes spread.

After walking downstairs from the sidewalk you enter a large room with about 25 stylists who have all cut and pasted and decorated their booths to the point where you dont see walls anymore. You just see...personality. History. Culture. Most importantly, you see framed pictures of Marky Mark, Chris Rock, Sly Stallone and the countless other celebs that have walked through that door, just as I did, and just knew.

These guys don't just cut hair. They're ARTISTS man! Have you ever had someone do last minute touches to your hair by gracefully flipping up your bangs while the scissors artfully fly by your head to meet and dovetail with your fastly falling follicles? Well, sir or madam, if you haven't then I say you have never really lived. Ok, you've probably lived but you definitely have never really gotten your hair cut...I mean styled.

I wonder how some places become so famous...somehow, magically, this place tapped into something like so many other places that defy the corporate business model and simply become an institution. $12 bucks for a taste of history and NY culture in the East Village and youll leave with a great cut too.

Oh...and there's Karaoke in the back so you can show off your new coif in the spotlight!

When I was a broke grad student - I wandered into Astor Place Hair seeking a new 'do.  I sat in Regina's chair and she worked her magic w/ razor scissors, giving me a nice girly short hair cut.  I saw her a few times then started going to my sister's friend for haircuts for a spell. Hey, nothin' like sitting in a sweltering Williamsburg apartment w/ a rockstar chick who cuts her own mohawk for a haircut. She moved back to Georgia :(.

I went back to Astor a few months ago seeking salvation from a phase of bad haircuts since M'lissa's departure. Ali greeted me with a smile and invited me to his chair. After a quick inspection, he asked me how short I wanted it and proceeded to wash my hair and condition.

With a furrowed brow he got to work.

Mind you, my hair is very thick and straight. When it hasn't been cut for a while it just hangs like Cousin It.  If a barber is good, as I imagined Ali was considering the pics of celebs and models he cut around his mirror sitting in his chair, I give them creative license so long as I can go to work and look professional. After a good 20 minutes of snipping and layering he pulls back and says in his thick Moroccan accent  "Now look, before when you come in your hair had NO style! Now it has style and people will tell you it looks very beautiful."

I've been to see him 2x and the cuts keep getting better as my hair gets used to his style. Upon my second visit yesterday he instantly remembered who I was after looking at my hair. Good barbers can see what they did before by running through the layers. After working his magic again yesterday he said, "See now your hair just looks better and better."

Amen.

I go to Morales for the best 'white boy cut' in town. I have been to almost every barber in Astor Place and Diamond Cuts throughout my years, but have committed to Morales as he does it exactly how I prefer plus he's good conversation. He has a rare yet awesome technique of fading from the top down which is opposite of most barbers, but it comes out perfect every time. Make sure you call him in advance because he is one of the few barbers there that ALWAYS has a list of people waiting

For any girls looking to get a haircut I would recommend the French Guy with the long hair who used to sit in the very back of the shop (maybe he still does). I see him working magic on his clients while I wait for Morales and they all walk out of the chair looking hot. just my 2 cents!

my hair is easily forgiving, but i am really picky when it comes to my hair cuts and have trusted few people with my locks in my life.
martha at astor place is wonderful, she does EXACTLY what i ask her to do.
i have long dark think wavy hair that i heavily layer - i say this so that you know if you have similar hair to me, martha will know what to do with it.

I have to agree with Fati - Astor Place Hairstylists is the Russian Roulette of hair joints.

I have to clear up one myth though -  YES, you CAN request a hairstylist.  If one of those dudes that sits up at the front tells you that you can't, he's probably just being lazy.  Usually I bypass all the hullabaloo and walk straight to my stylist of choice.  Or if you see an empty seat by a stylist you think you'd like to try, then sit there and wait.  Most people are intimidated by the size of the place, the chaotic frenzy of hairdryers and haphazard stations of mirrors, but the people that work there are no-nonsense type of folk. It's a good thing - they're all really down-to-earth - real New Yorkers.

I have been lucky enough to have had my hair cut here since I was twelve and have been seeing the same stylist, Josephine (and or Martha, who has, unfortunately, left), since and she is absolutely amazing!  I will continue to go to Astor Place just for her, but once she leaves, I might have to as well.  A lot has changed in ten years - I remember when haircuts there were twelve dollars (fifteen or so including wash and blowdry), typical clientele included many celebrities and the ambience was just more lively (is it just me or has it gotten a bit depressing?).  Little known fact: that whole men's front-flip phenomenon of the nineties?  It started with Brad Pitt at Astor Place.

Tips: if and/or when you finally find a hairdresser that suits you, MAKE FRIENDS WITH THEM.  You can schedule personal appointments with your stylist, and depending on who they are and how long you've been seeing them, they will give you discounts.  Be vocal about what you want or else they'll just prune your hedge the way they want to.  Also, I would not recommend anyone to go to any of the hairstylists in the back room.  My boyfriend went there for the first time a month ago and got a horrible haircut (and is upset that I sent him there with my good word) - the guy just buzzed his head and did not listen to any of the requests he made.  From what I can tell, if you want a quick and simple cut from an amateur, go to the back room.

Come here if you want to roll the dice.

This salon sweatshop is just reliably unreliable. I've received my BEST and WORST 'cuts from this assembly-line shop, and there's no telling what you will get until the old men at the center table bark out your assignment.

I just had to stop going...I kept throwing craps.

This place is quite the experience. I didn't intend to get a haircut here, but came along for moral support with a friend. When I heard how cheap it was, I figured I may as well get a cut also, since it had been a while since my last one.
I first tried to get this one stylist to cut my hair because my friend had read online that she was good. After this particular stylist told us that she would be able to give us cuts and left us waiting for a good 15 minutes, she changed her mind and said we needed to find someone else so she could have time for the people who had appointments. She walked me over to some other random stylist, and told me to wait there. I waited around another 15 minutes before a different third stylist directed me to her seat. This woman spoke very little English, and at first she thought all I wanted was a blow dry. After this miscommunication was corrected, she gave me a pretty speedy cut, and a rather painful blow out. The cut looked pretty cute when I was leaving, but it doesn't really look that good a few weeks later. It was definitely a by the books hair cut. I guess for that price, I shouldn't expect more, but I wish she would have taken a little bit of time to fine tune the cut.

Overall, It seems this place is probably a better deal for men than women.
In the future, if I am looking for a cheap haircut, I'll probably go to Chinatown instead.

This down and dirty no frills hair salon, is perfect for the cheap and easy hair cut.  If you have hair like mine, long and curly with minimal layers, there is no need to spend a gazillion dollars getting it cut by a fancy pants "hair stylist."  No matter how my hair is cut, it lays the same way pretty much every time.  I actually even used to go to Supercuts!

I love this place, I go to Rosa (when you first walk in she is all the way to the left at  the very far end of the room by the door).  She's great, and now she knows me.  A hair cut is $20, if she straightens it it's $30.  By the way, she does the best straightening job I've ever had, and I'm not exaggerating.  I have coarse curly hair, and she straightens the shit out of it so that it looks shiny, lustrous and gorgeous.  It's worth the extra ten and makes me look fancy, haha.

The first time I came here was due to the fact that the previous night I had decided to highlight my own hair.  (I'm dumb.)  Upon rinsing out the solution, I realized I had bleached huge chunks of my hair whilst leaving the rest au natural, beautiful!  I came here on an emergency color job, and Rosa fixed me up great.  Put my hair back to its natural color, and gave me highlights, all for under $100.  Though, I wouldn't recommend coming here for color...that I tend to want to pay more for.  The highlights were too light underneath, timing was off.

But, the hair cuts here are great!  Cheap and easy, just like some of my friends!

This is a great place to get a simple haircut.  For the past 10 years, only Riccardo at Astor Place has ever cut my hair.  I've had to plan haircuts around his vacation schedule.

While I use a classic Italian barber, this place has it all.  Everything from female stylists to guys that will shave the NY Mets logo into your head if you want (one day I'll do it!).  From what I've heard, most people that walk in and get a cut from a random person usually have a pretty good experience.

It can get pretty crowded at peak times, but it really depends on if you're going to see a specific person or not.  If you don't care who cuts your hair, there are so many barbers that you rarely have to wait too long.

The price for haircuts here has gone up over the years, but even with the haircut inflation I still only pay $14.   This place is pretty large and absolutely nothing fancy, but they get the job done at a price and quality level that is hard to beat.

I decided to start treating my hair better and stopped going here a while ago. Nothing against AP, still a good deal but I found the only safe cut to get was "short". Stylists they are not. And when you have a giant mess of hair like myself, it needs a little extra love.

been going here for almost 20 years now, since grammar school in fact. and can you believe that i've pretty much had the same barber for all that time: Giovanni. Hector i had a few times, and he's great as well, if he's still there that is.  I remember when it was just the first floor (where cold stone creamery is now). then they opened up a second floor, followed by the basement. (or was the basement first, then the 2nd floor?)

but for $13 giovanni always gets my hair right. always remembers i take a "1 and a half" razor and its always square in the back. The key is to get there on saturday mornings between 10-11am so you don't have to wait.
