Great discount room. I went here as part of  a package vacation with Alaska Air. The hotel is older, the rooms are small, the floors are not carpeted, but tiled instead. We had two single beds that were not very comfortable.

HOWEVER, we were not there for the hotel room. The place was also CLEAN,  SAFE, and had an AMAZING STAFF!!!

Seriously, I can't get over how great the staff was for our 4 days there. Extremely helpful and friendly. If you just want a cheap place to crash while you party in Waikiki, or want a super cheap vacay to an amazing place, choose this hotel. Just recognize it's nothing more than a safe, clean place for you to crash and leave your stuff. And if the staff is as great to you as they were to us, please tip them. It's freakin expensive to live in Hawaii!

I've stayed here twice, once last summer (2010) and just this past week.  I hate to give a really crappy review, because the staff who work at this hotel make it a pleasant place to stay.  You'll always be greeted with aloha every time you leave or come back to the hotel.  They all make it a point to talk to you and get to know you.  Kevin, you're the coolest of the bunch!!  The parking that's behind the hotel and connected to another hotel has some of the nicest valet peeps.  For this review I am also including them as part of the staff that make it a pleasant place to stay.

Anyway, yes, it's a bargain... yes, you get an ocean front view, but it's blocked by a huge banyan tree that houses so many birds.  I'm going to say that tree is louder than a trip to the zoo down the street (Just being factual!).  You can still hear the powerful ocean if you listen closely.  My hubby and I had a room on the 6th floor that's on the same side as Kalakaua Ave.  The best thing about  it was the view from the balcony just to the left of the banyan tree across the street.  I know I keep mentioning this tree, but you cannot watch the sunset from that floor --the tree is in the way LOL!  Well aside from the tree which is beautiful in itself... on to why I'm only giving this place two stars.

You'll have to look at my pictures to understand what I'm talking about. I have never been above the 6th floor, but from reading the other reviews, I am wondering if I am missing out on "remodeled" rooms?  Anyway, yes, the elevator is small, all the floors are tiled, the decor is a little outdated (It reminds me of an art deco Hawaiian/Asian theme), you can get wifi on the 2nd floor with a password, and it is conveniently located next to an ABC store and a five second walk across from the beach. My complaints this time around:  a ripped comforter (really... they can't afford to buy new ones?), the blackout drapes were torn with holes (you can see the light shining through it in the morning), the shower head was loose and  would not stay in one position (c'mon, can't they afford faucet tape?) and it was oxidized, there were ants in the room, and smaller looking ants randomly in the sink.  The toilet would run after flushing in our room, so I had to take the cover off of the tank and wiggle the arm on the handle to stop it from running. That wasn't the worst part, but black mildew/mold beneath the tank cover.  Housekeeping would do a good job at fixing the bed, emptying the trash and replacing towels daily, but within the seven days of staying there our sink was not scrubbed once.  I know this because we had shaving cream and toothpaste that was on the walls of the sinks and they were never removed during that entire week.

Hmmm...  a great price for the convenience of the beach and awesome staff, but nothing else.  My hubby and I decided we won't be going back there unless they undergo some serious renovations.  Again, the staff is what made the stay... definitely not the room!!

Well, here it is. My wife and I discussed this review before writing it. As other's mentioned the staff is great and friendly and super helpful. However, I would not call this a hotel, merely a guest house. There are few amenities, no mini baron bar, no in-room wireless or affiliated restaurant. The view from the more expansive Ocean View Rooms is great but it is super noisy even if the windows are closed. The A/C is very loud too. Room was old but I have to admit clean, yet one morning we had a 2 inch cockroach in the room. The hotel is central located but we rather stay away from the main strip and have it more quiet. We slept not a single night through.

In the past I'm sure this hotel was beautiful, elegant, and one of the best in Oahu. Unfortunately, as time has gone on, it's become outdated, dirty, and in dier need of repair. The elevator is terrifying. It literally rattles and shakes as it moves and I'm sure that it isn't up to modern day building standards. The check-in area and the main two floors of the hotel have broken tiles and are quite disorganized. The rooms are small, dingy, and lacking any true ammenities. The televisions are old box TV's, the phone doesn't work, the water pressure is terrible, and there is no wireless internet access. The walls are stained, and truthfully I got a terrible vibe from the room I stayed in. It was eerily cold and sent chills down my spine. I ended up staying an hour and becoming so overwhelmed from the bad vibes that I ultimately left. You get what you pay for. A cheap fee issues a cheap hotel. It needs a lot of work, and I hope it gets it. It really could be a beautiful little hotel. Right now it's just old and worn out. I think they think the outdated decor gives it character, but I think the only thing it really gives the hotel is disgruntled guests. There are much better options on Waikiki. I suggest looking elsewhere for your stay.

    What a shithotel.

First, the rooms smell like the inside of a cold wet sock -- damp and moldy. We must thank God for small favors, like it doesn't smell like feet, right?

Second, perhaps I am fancy, but when I take a shower, I don't like the ENTIRE uncarpeted floor to be covered in a sheen of sweat-water from their shower head (I mentioned it's damp, right?).

Third, the rooms I got faced the hallway's night lamps. It was daylight at 1 AM, when my wife and I checked in. Sleep was problematic. Sleep was also not helped by the emphysematic air conditioner, which wheezed throughout the night.

Fourth, there's the extreme sketchiness of having to park one's rental car in a lot run by another hotel -- the Aston Beachside hotel. I especially liked the fact that the front desk clerk had to informally vouch for some "guy" (security guard?) at the other hotel's parking lot. No receipt for my friend's parking.

Fifth, the clerk who was at the front desk late at night (Tim? Tom?) on Thursday, 26 May 2011, is a moron. I'm sorry for that remark; for all I know he is a mental patient who was abducted by the Aston hotel corporation.  Do's and dont's of being a clerk: DON'T describe visual landmarks THAT ARE NOT LIT UP to people coming in at night, it automatically makes you look like an idiot; DON'T give us a history of your shitty ass hotel when customers complain about not being able to find your hotel (because there is no ASTON on the facade), because 1) we don't care and 2) we want to sleep; 3) and DON'T try to explain things in greater detail, because we DON'T CARE.

An ass storm of bad. A bad deal at ANY price. That includes FREE.

    EXCELLENT HOTEL FOR THE PRICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So here's the scoop, the hotel is not super fancy, and the rooms are pretty darn small. But it is literally across the street from the best part of Waikiki Beach. You simply can't beat it! And frankly, I wouldn't want the hotel to get any nicer because then I couldn't afford it! Let the richies have their super fancy hotels, and let those who just want a prime location and don't care about jewel encrusted door nobs or whatever have this place!

    Some things:

    - No WiFi in the rooms. It's free, but you must go down to the lobby to use it.

    - They are currently under construction. There is NO NOISE from the construction, but there were a few boxes in the lobby because of it. On the plus side, after the construction is complete, there might be in-room WiFi, who knows!

    - There is a cabinet right by the elevator to get your beach towels, and one right by the entrance full of books to read on the beach! Nifty!

    - You might just walk right by the main entrance without even noticing! It's just a small doorway in between an ABC store and an Ed Hardy store.

    - Our room had tile floors. Not sure if they all do, but that's kinda weird to me. At the same time, you're gonna be covered with sand, so it makes sense.

    - Most rooms had a balcony. That doesn't mean they have a view though. Ours was in the corner looking at two walls, and if you leaned over and looked right, you could see another hotel. WOW! Haha! But since we wanted privacy, we liked it. (And we knew we didn't pay for a view room.)

    - No pool. (Just go across the freaking street to the beach!!!!!!!!!!) No jacuzzi though, which we didn't mind but that is maybe a drag for some.

    - TV remote didn't have numbers. I know that's such a small insignificant thing, but maybe it gives you a feel for what I mean by a "cheaper" hotel. I mean there are hotels with super cable and fancy remotes that let you check out and browse the internet, and then there are hotels with basic cable and remotes that only go up and down. Ya know?

Other than that, the staff was very nice!! everyone that we met was so helpful and friendly!! Especially kevin, he helped us out alot and was always there to greet us and ask us about our day.
    Felt very welcomed here.

the room was somewhat smaller than i expected, but it was perfect for the two of us...and was located right across the beach and almost everything was walking distnace from us. Very cool!

Okay, so I have stayed in way more meager hotels around the world, and this spot hits about average to the run of the mill "roach motel." I would definitely recommend the Aqua Beachside based  only upon the location and the ocean view rooms. I took a look into one of the basic rooms, and it is true: no windows.

If you are a backpacker, or just need a room to lay your head, this is your spot. You can wake up, grab coffee at the ABC and hang out on the balcony. The people watching and sunsets are excellent. However, we were on the 10th floor and the street noise was crazy all night! There were some ice-heads posted up underneath the hotel till the wee-hours. (If you're in Waikiki to party you'll probably stay out later and miss all that). The A/C unit provided some "pleasant" white noise on our second night. It also helped to remove a bit of the "grandma's attic" smell from the room.

The decor could have been easily garbage picked, and the mattresses and pillows were really uncomfortable. Does this mean I'm getting old??? I didn't see any bugs, (though it should be noted that there are bugs in Hawaii... everywhere). Also, there were two of us so I booked a double. The ole man and I slept separately in twin beds. Maybe it was lost in translation somewhere?

Over all: SUPER BASIC. Spring for the ocean view room. Its the only reason to stay there besides the location. The staff is great and very friendly. They do offer VALET parking for $22 a night and the valets are total sweethearts. There is no drive up lobby, so you just pull into the loading zone to check in. They are between the cheese-ball Ed Hardy Store and one of the million ABC stores on the street.

Will I stay there again? Maybe - but only for one night. But realistically, I'll skip Waikiki entirely on my next trip. Its just too damn crowded.

I have the luck to have Hawaii as a territory for work.  That having been said, I have stayed many different places in Honolulu. From the Surfrider and the Hale Koa, to Outriggers, and the Aqua boutique chain.

By far the best location (if not the best quality) of the Aqua chain, the view overlooks the portion of beach that is run by the star beach boys (the yellow umbrellas and beach chair rentals) and the Banyan tree just east of the HPD office and the statue of Duke.

Slightly run down seems to be a common theme of these reviews, and if that is a sticking point, steer clear.  I like this location for it's proximity to the 24 hour fitness a block away (which has been recently renovated).

Aside from the gym, there really isn't much to the east of the location, so you get used to walking west toward all the touristy crap, restaurants and bars.

Lave is an amazing staff member, especially when judged against some of the other staff working the desk (as we attempted to call down to check out and have a cab brought round, the phone in the lobby rang off the hook for over 30 minutes. We assumed it was due to a line of travelers either checking in or out, but when we went down in person the reception guy was plucking away at his uekelele and not busy at all!) Lave, on the other hand helped to receive my business package (which the manager refused b/c the first name didin't match, but Lave saw the last name DID and made the connection), saving my business trip in one fell swoop.

Rooms are small.  Rooms are clean.  A/C is great (assuming your wife lets you enjoy it). Pay the extra 10 bucks for ocean view. Totally worth it.

Now, enough about the room.  You're in Hawaii, get out on the beach!

Aqua Beachside is a new addition to the Aqua boutique hotels.  It's a little gem hidden on the block between the Hyatt and McDonalds.  The hotel is just a few steps away from the Waikiki Beach and Kuhio Beach Park.  Most importantly, the ABC store was just next door.
Remember, this is a Budget hotel, so aside from housekeeping and free toiletries, don't expect much.  The hotel is very small and weathered but clean. Surprisingly, we didn't hear much traffic considering the prime location. The staff is very friendly and helpful.  There is complimentary WiFi and they also provide beach towels.  For $94/night the Beachside is perfect for the Budget traveler who doesn't need luxury amenities.

4 stars simply because if I were to go back to Waikiki for vacation, I would not hesitate to book Aqua Waikiki Beachside again.
Not 5 stars because if I was ballin' out of control, I would definitely upgrade to a nicer hotel.

I booked Aqua Waikiki Beachside through a deal on http://Expedia.com after consulting with Yelp and I completely concur with everything that's been said. It is a budget hotel and it's not the most amazing of places but it gets the job done and the location more than makes up for it. Initially when I walked in I was a little turned off by the room and the tiny TV but you realize that you're rarely in the room anyways so it really does not matter.

The front desk was always super nice and always tried to help us figure out logistics and give us recommendations on places to go and nearby restaurants to eat at. One of my biggest pet peeves with hotels is their shower water pressure and it was great here!

    Just a couple tips:
-If you call downstairs, they provide you with a hair dryer.
-You can also borrow beach towels downstairs though I would recommend you grab one ASAP since they tend to run out. We managed to snag two early on but were unable to trade them in for fresh ones since they were always out... no big!
-Take the stairs, elevator is tiny, creepy and the only thing that I would declare to be ghettooo
-There is free wireless but only on the 2nd floor. They have a nice patio area to sit at but it was kind of annoying not having internet in the room.

As others have said it's literally steps from Waikiki beach aaaaand right next to the ABC store. I would 100% recommend Aqua Waikiki Beachside BUT still emphasize that, remember, this IS a 2 star hotel!

Woo Hoo this is as good as it gets for a 2 Star hotel, in other words I would give this a top rating for a 2 star hotel...I wouldn't call this hotel ghetto, but then again I am not familiar with ghetto hotels like maybe jessica C is. ..anyhow, it is right across from the beach, so when I forgot my water bottle or swim shoes I could run acroos the streeet go up and get them and be back in 2 minutes.  The rooms are small but adequate, I actually slept really great on the soft bed, we needed more pillows though, so we asked and we received. The room had a little fridge, the bathroom was ok, water temp was constantly changing but luckily in Hawaii it didn't matter if it got a little cool! There is no lobby, no ambiance no waterfalls and that is what we did not pay for, which was fine by me bc we really didn't spend much time in the hotel at all!

ABC store right below us, which of course is nice because we always need water, beer, snacks for the room etc.

Biggest complaint, is don't get an ocean front room on level 7! Our room looked right into the big banyan tree so we were robbed of the sunset! Get 8 or higher!

And yes Lave at the front desk is very cool calm and collected and will get you some beachtowels withough a complaint. He also hooked us up when it came to our parking but I don't want to give the details away as I don't want him to get in trouble! I would definatley stay here again if I wanted a convenient beachside room, that didn't cost an arma and a leg!

Stayed last night. Staff was very kind and accomodating of a last minute reservation. They were honest about the room lacking a view and were helpful with recommendinding the banyan waikiki for 10 dollar parking. Great bargain. If you want five star accommodations, go to the marriott or ala moana... This place is great for the everyday man.
The only reason i don't give it 5 stars is because there was clearly mildew in the bathroom. Tough to fight mildew in an older building in HI. No big deal. It wasnt all over the place.

I thought this was a great hotel for the value.   Especially after hearing someone brag about how they got a bargain paying TWICE as much for an ocean front room somewhere else!

As others have noted, some of the rooms may not be newly renovated, but our room was better than I expected from reviews. It was not huge, but definitely big enough for us to comfortably access our suitcases.  I liked the tiled shower.  I am kind of a sucker for the decor though - reminds me of the 40s.  (which I think is better than a badly done renovation). The cabinet in the bathroom was kind of peeling but I thought it was a cool piece of furniture, so I would have kept it too.

But really - who cares about the room when you can be sitting on your ocean front balcony and watching people surf? We were on the 8th floor and enjoyed the view - especially for New Year's Eve fireworks with a bottle of bubbly.

The staff was helpful, especially Douglas.  We didn't go to breakfast,  there were so many places to eat, and with what you save on the room, why not treat yourself?

Location, Location, Location! This place is a great area to stay in, you are within walking distance of everything. The beach is across the street literally and the ABC store next to the entrance door is awesome. There is McDonald's a block down the street that is 24 hours.

Greg at the front desk is the man, he can hook you up with just about anything you are looking for or tell you who to ask. He is very cool and if you need something, beach towel, hair dryer, room up grade, directions, toilet paper, food, this dude knows it all and is very cool about it too!

This is a 2 star hotel with 5 star staff, it must be for the slow elevator or the out dated furniture, the beds are great and the view is unbeatable from the 12th floor balcony, oh yeah our AC was awesome. Sheets and blankets where nice and soft and there where extra pillows in the room, visitors guides and everything. There is a small pavilion outside by the beach it has a few park benches under it and every night a dude with a violin would play and all i could hear was the ocean waves with an ever quiet violin in the background, simply awesome! We loved this hotel after we got over our first impression's of the elevator "small" and our door key. After we settled in and had something to eat "long flight" we where able to realize the beauty of staying here "sunsets, beach, music and waves, location".

There is ton's to do and see with just a short walk from this Hotel!

    Enjoy,

I love it here... been here twice so far and we are always pleased with the friendly staff. Great location near plenty of stores that open early and restaurants and bars around in walking distance. If you like to work out there is a 24hr fitness a few blocks down where you can look out into ocean. The beaches are clean and beautiful and just a walk across the street ....The rooms are clean.. the beds really really comfy ...but make sure to close the balcony door if you have one ... we had a white pigeon walk in and look around... then turned around and walked right back out lol...Over all I would recommend staying here... reasonable price as well.

Our room was small (but very clean), and there was loud construction going on on the floor above us. But our room on the 10th floor had the most amazing ocean view that no matter what, I'd give this place 5 stars. As it was, it was just right for us. Free beach towels for the beach that's RIGHT across the street and we bought a $15 umbrella from the ABC next door. So wonderful, so relaxing. We slept with the sliding glass door open every night -- screw safety -- we just wanted to hear that roaring ocean.

All I can say is I would not stay here again if they gave us the room for free.  We paid extra for an ocean view, which you could not see if you sat down in the filthy patio chairs (no railing on balcony - solid concrete/stucco wall).   The room was small, which was okay.  But due to the size there was no where to put anything down.  I used the one chair for my suitcase; do not recommend putting your suitcase on the floor due to baby roach in bathroom.  Who wants extra carry on going home?  The floor was stone tile and always felt dirty (husband's socks turned kind of gray).  The bathroom and shower were good sized but sink had no counter so things kept falling on the floor.  On the last day a wonderful sewer smell filled the bathroom and the husband swore the water had the same smell.

The front desk staff was fairly helpful, when you could get them to look up from what  they were doing.  Except for Douglas, who was always friendly and was the only one who bothered to stand up when we walked up to the desk.  But their 866 reservation staff needs some serious instruction on customer service.  I called a few days prior to arriving to make sure we had a queen bed and not two twins and the person mentioned that there would be a parade in front of our hotel on Saturday.  She did not mention that the street would be closed on the Friday we were arriving.  We spent two hours trying to get from the airport to the hotel.  When I finally called them to try to get rerouted, the person who  answered didn't bother to listen when I first described where we were staying and where we were stuck in traffic; she told me not to yell at her when I had to repeat myself.  So I called the hotel directly and Douglas answered, gave us perfect directions and we finally made it there.

Unfortunately, the room pricing deal we booked was prepaid or I think we would have moved to another hotel.  The beach across the street is okay but there are so many other beaches within walking distance that it's not really a selling point (IMHO).

Prior to checking in, I'd read in a book that the views of the beach are great the higher up you go. Upon checking in, I asked if we could stay as high up as possible and we were put into the 12th floor, top corner unit. It had recently been remodeled and was clean, air conditioned, and had a lovely private balcony with two chairs and a table, perfect for an early morning picnic watching the sun shine on the early surfers, or relaxing after a long day of snorkeling and touring the island. With the sliding door closed, it was totally quiet at night, and very comfortable. The small fridge was perfect, and the TV pulled out of the cabinet on a sliding tray.

The staff was friendly, helpful, especially Greg, and anything you need, you just have to ask.. more towels, wash cloths, etc. and they were happy to accommodate. The location is right in the middle of Waikiki Beach, across the street from the big banyan tree and boasts views that nearby hotels charge more than double for. This was my 5th time visiting Waikiki and I've stayed in many hotels around the same price. None other offered the view and location Waikiki Beachside did. It was nice to experience Waikiki nightlife from the comfort of our balcony 12 floors up and not have to deal with being in the crowds.

The downsides are few: The elevator is old and slow and can take a while (they say it too runs on island time), *especially* during continental breakfast time, which is 7:30 - 8:30 am (Not long enough for breakfast, but the front desk was very helpful in offering a handful of suggestions for breakfast within walking distance). One of the days, the air conditioning in the whole hotel wasn't working and it made it a little uncomfortable in the room but really, with the beach right across the street, it wasn't bad at all. It was initially difficult to find, but once we narrowed down which block it was in, no problem. Parking anywhere in Waikiki is going to run about $15-$35 a day. It's just how it is and you have to take that in to account in the price of your trip. Sometimes, if you are polite and friendly, you can get a great deal on parking for a week if you're there if you ask. We ended up a hop, skip, and a jump away for $100 flat for in/out valet the 9 day duration of our trip.

After staying in a variety of hotels both more and less expensive in Waikiki, hands down, Waikiki Beachside is great!

boyfriend and i stayed here last year last minute. we were staying with a friend while visiting oahu, but decided that on our last night we'd get a hotel downtown because it was much closer to the airport than our friends house. this was the cheapest hotel that had a good proximity to the beach.

that's about the only thing it has going for it - the fact that it's right across the street from waikiki beach. other than that, i found it to be quite ghetto (for the lack of a better word). first off, not much of a lobby at all... second off, the elevator is tiny and it was a sketchy ride up to the top floor. though our room was at the top, it was located on the backside which looks right down into a scary alley and your view is of a concrete wall of the building next to the hotel.

the room was very outdated... the decor was bleh. lets just say the whole room is a nasty, mildewy pink color. it has sort of an asian theme... the beds were the most uncomfortable hotel beds i've ever slept in. motel 6 beds were wayyyyy better than this. they didn't have any rooms with king or queen beds, so we got stuck with 2 twin beds. they may call them double beds, but they were some small doubles. these beds were the size of my dorm bed when i was in college. the matress felt like a board.

the only semi updated thing this room had was maybe the bathroom. the fixtures and shower looked new. i suppose if you're just looking for a cheap place near the beach to crash at night this would do... but if you're looking to spend any time in the hotel or get a good nights sleep or at least feel like your on a pleasant hawaiian vacation, i would suggest looking elsewhere...

Horrible hotel if ur booking their standard room. The room seriously look like a closet. There were no windows, ac that did not work, ripped comforter, trickling water....just plain nasty. Instead of helping us get a different room they wanted us to "upgrade" for only $40/night what BS. Just be careful. They got one star just for their location.

What the hotel lacks in frills and thrills, it makes up in service.  The hotel is old, the decor isn't that great, the TV in the room is ancient (Zenith? Really?), it has 1 really small elevator, continental breakfast is only from 7:30a-8:30a and only has muffins, apples, coffee, and juice.  The hotel is also really hard to find because the entrance is practically hidden! HOWEVER, it is right across the street from Waikiki Beach, there is an ABC right next to it, and the staff is super friendly!  Props to front desk agent Lave who took take of us when Travelocity f"d up and didn't send over the reservation AND he also comped our parking for all of our troubles!  I suggest paying a little extra for a beach view!  So nice to wake up and see the ocean in the morning!  Not the nicest hotel but if you're on a budget and don't mind giving up having a flat screen TV and a huge bathroom for a cool view, its worth it!
