The experience I had the Mahana was excellent and very memorable.  As we were checked in we were given the option of the 4th or the 10th floor.  Definitely the 10th floor.

We were assigned to a corner unit which was actually owned by the Mahana.  Many units here are privately owned.  Once we arrived our cleaning lady came by and introduced herself, and told us her name was Claire.  She was very sweet.  We began to look around our room and it was much nicer than we had expected.  There were 3 of us so we had reserved a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom unit.  The decor in here was Hawaiian to the max.  It helped you remember you were in Hawaii at all times.  Our room was huge.  Two king size beds, two full bathrooms, a full kitchen including a stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and it was stocked with utensils.  Along with that the living room and dining room were very large, we had 3 flat screen tvs, and we had a very large lanai.  I was very impressed!

This is a condo, not a hotel room so there are a few things you do not get.  Don't expect to find a restaurant here because there is not one.  There is a grocery store close so I recommend getting some things.  The Star Market that is close to the condo is not very clean and it is pricey.  Safeway and Long's are down the road just a bit in Lahaina and they are much more reasonably priced than the Star Market.

Back to the Mahana, they have a pool and a large hot tub which are both very nice.  This property is right on the beach and its around 40 years old.  We were told that hotels and condos are not allowed to build things close to the water anymore and the Mahana is as good as it gets because you are right on the water and you have great views of Molokai and Lanai.  This is not a hotel so you can't think of it as one.

We also got a assistance by a woman named Susan who worked with Expedia.  We booked all the things we wanted to do through her.  She was extremely nice and helpful and she fills you in on what is good and what is not.  She is there all throughout the week.  If you have any questions I recommend asking her.

I would recommend anyone to stay here!  We enjoyed it a lot.  It was beautiful, the people were nice, and we were located in a great area on Maui.  Check this place out!  Enjoy and Cheers!

Ahhhh, the Mahana. We did enjoy our time here, but came prepared. We knew to ask if we weren't happy with our first selected room and we did. Reluctantly the woman at the front desk, Karen, let us look at 2 other rooms, but they weren't any better. Some of the units are renovated well, some aren't renovated at all, and some are renovated cheaply. The front desk crew said they have no idea what amenities are in each unit, which is hard for me to believe. I know they are individually owned, but if you are there everyday, you pick up on these things. There have to be units that are more popular.  Plus, she said that she didn't know what would be available the next day, but she was calling and leaving messages with people that were set to check out the following morning. We settled for the first one they gave us, b/c everyone after that was marginally nicer but below the tree line, so our view was obstructed. All in all it was a good place to stay. And we learned that there was an annual owners meeting, so that was why our choices were SO limited.

The guests were friendly and we enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi. However, we didn't use it all that much. The beach is right in front of you, just steps away! I must say that we chose this place b/c the view is undeniably the best you can get. There isn't any hassle of "ocean view" where you have to get on your toes and almost fall off the balcony to see it. It is an ocean FRONT room, no matter what unit you get. This aspect makes it worthwhile and luxurious. We had a one bedroom and were only one couple and it was perfect. The kitchen worked well for us, we barely ate out and saved tons of money, while still enjoying ourselves.

We had relaxing breakfasts and romantic dinners on the lanai. Enjoyed bottles of wine without the annoyance of high prices or crowded restaurants. When we were in the mood for going out, we enjoyed it so much more. It does feel like a home away from home, when you look back at the memories.

There is snorkeling right outside of your room, too. We went just to the left of the beach almost had it to ourselves with gorgeous coral and fish everywhere. The water is warm, yet refreshing, and a beautiful blue...not much more you can ask for in the beach.

There are some cons, with the biggest being the front desk staff. They act as if you are lucky they are taking the time to be annoyed by you. There were some friendly ones up there, but for the majority of our time there, Karen was on duty. SHE IS THE WORST! She barely looks at you when she is forced to respond to you. Gives you an obvious fake smile at the end for a second and goes back to her multitasking. There is no such thing as full attention from her. We got there an hour early and she wouldn't let us into our room. Didn't even suggest anything for us to do. We had already gone to Costco and had groceries that were in need of a fridge, so we were forced to drive around with the air on full blast to make them last. There was one good experience from the front desk, it was another girl who was on duty. She was polite, friendly, and sent up what we needed right away. We were surprised after our check in experience with Karen. I wish that I could remember the girl's name that was on duty at night. If she had been there more often, my rating would be higher for this place.

Another would be the construction. We had to switch rooms for our last two nights there b/c they had a crew scaling the building with power tools all day. It was really loud and at times they were at your window peering in. IMO, I felt that they shouldn't put occupants in the affected units. The moved ended up being better than having cables outside of our windows indefinitely and the occasional construction worker. Plus, the sound of a jackhammer tool on the wall. However, it did take up over about 2 hours of one of our mornings.

All in all this is a great place to stay. I recommend it if you are looking for a great deal, spectacular view, and a kitchen. However, come prepared and remember they aren't in the hospitality business. They manage individually owned units.

Personally, for me, I am left feeling like one person didn't appreciate us visiting her home for a vacation. I experienced this only one other time on the island, and it was a shame that she had to be there almost every day at our accommodations. I have seen other reviews of her being rude, so I am surprised she is still employed there.

Oh, and one more thing. You can book through the individual owners on your own. With this you know exactly what you are getting, but it is a lot more expensive than booking online with another site.

I stayed here for one week in early August 2009.  It was nice.  Me and my family stayed in Room 209.  It was down at the end and had a lovely view.  I know some people have commented that high up was better, however being two floors up I was able to see the waves crashing on the beach without looking over the balcony.
I am not sure of the unit is privately owned or owned by Mahana. The staff was prompt to all of our request and never gave us attitude.
Everything in this unit is updated and beautiful.  The only thing that probably needs to be updated is the bed.  Only if people realize that if they get the special foam, a bed will feel better.
I would definitely recommend staying here.  Being able to have a condo with a full fridge, stove and oven makes for a less expensive trip.  No need to go out every day for breakfast, lunch and or dinner.

I stay here every time we go to Maui. I rent through a privater owner, unit 815. It's a one bedroom, two bath that has everything you need to feel like you are at home while being away from home.
Every unit is ocean front and the higher up you stay, the better the view. It is close to great spots to eat and the Star market in case you actually want to cook.
There can't possibly a more peaceful place to go than Maui. If you go there check out the Mahana. If you need info on who to rent from, contact me and I can pass on the owner's information to you.
Aloha

Ahhh, the Mahana. It is one of the most beautiful hotels I have stayed at. Its kind of hard to find, since it's not really a hotel. Resortquest (the Hotel chain) owns about 30% of the units and operates the front desk, maid service, etc. The other 70% of the units are privately owned by individuals. So technically you're staying at a Resortquest, but the amenities in your unit, how clean/modern it is, etc. are up to the individual homeowners.

We stayed in #816, and it was beautiful. It was a 1-bedroom apartment (huge!) with a spacious balcony, beautiful full kitchen, and gorgeous living room. Every room here is "ocean front," so you'll be sure to have a stunning view of the beach as well as Lana'i and Moloka'i (two small islands off the coast of Maui). The Mahana is literally on the beach... you don't need to go more than 50 feet to get to the water.

The water outside the hotel is clear and beautiful, ideal for snorkeling. We spotted a green turtle from our balcony one morning, put on our snorkel gear and raced into the ocean just in time to swim with it.

The only drawbacks of the Mahana are that the door cards are kind of old, as some reviewers have said, and they have this system for getting a beach towel where you have to sign in and sign out your towels. That was a little annoying. Other than that, the desk staff were very nice and knowledgeable about the area.

If you stay here try China Boat restaurant (a short while north on Lower Honoapilani road) for some cheap and authentic chinese food.

This place is beautiful and has everything you need for your stay. Washer/dryer, dishwasher, tv, FREE WIFI, very clean pool, oceanfront view, fully loaded kitchen with blender, toaster, etc. The rooms are clean and room service comes in every day to make sure your room is neat.

This place quickly felt like home to us with their friendly service. Even though we stayed in a studio, there was still enough space for just the two of us. When we first checked in, the front desk allowed us to check out a few rooms to see which one we would prefer to stay in. We opted for a studio on the 8th floor because of the view, even though the first floor was close to the beach.

The oceanfront view is amazing. This location can get pretty windy, but it's incredibly close to great restaurants, shopping, activities/excursions, and Front St. There is also free parking. Star supermarket is right across the street, so you can grab breakfast or drinks.

I would definitly recommend this place to stay to others.

We stayed at the Mahana last year and it was great, we had a room on the 4th floor and the views from the lanai of the islands Molokai and Lanai and the sound of the ocean waves 24-7 is heaven. Our room was well appointed and large. The kitchen was nice. The location is a bit out of the way but that's what made it so relaxing. They don't have a restaurant but allow you to charge food to your room from the restaurant at the Kaanapali Shores Hotel next door who have excellent food and tasty drinks. It's great to have a washer and dryer right in your room too... This place has everything you need for a great stay...

Stayed here for 4 nights during the last week of October (my wife and I's anniversery)
Pluses:  every room has ocean view, and what a sweet view it is!!
Huge huge deck with rocking chairs were ideal for morning breakfasts and incredible sunset views.

The room we had (707) was very tastefully decorated, with a Japanese theme...all creature comforts are there and was the best condo style hotel room I have ever stayed in...havn't been to many tho heheh
Minuses:  stupid door card never worked half the time, leading me to nearly bust the door down on occasion...staff was very very laid back, made no effort to even fix the damn thing.

Overall:  stay there if don't want the pretentiousness of some Kapalua hotels or want to be away from the kiddies gathering up at Black Rock just down the street.

Holy freaking ocean.  We stayed at this place, technically condo rentals,  for 5 nights in November.  We were on the ninth floor, but every unit has floor to ceiling glass and a private lanai- this alone is worth the 5 stars.   There is nothing better than looking out your damn wall and seeing nothing but ocean.

The first night we were there it was tough to sleep- I was majorly jet-lagged  and excited to be there, so the sound of the waves actually bugged me.  I got used to them quickly and fear I may be addicted to white noise machines forever.

The rooms are all decorated  according to their owner's tastes.  Ours was a one bedroom/ one bath.  It had a living area and kitchen. We were certain we would make a lot of our own food, but ended up mostly eating out.  It was nice to have the kitchen for keeping snacks, morning o.j, wine, and of course mai tai fixin's.

There's a small pool downstairs where we tried out our new snorkel equipment.  It seemed like a good, enclosed place for families with wee kiddies and die-hard pool-lovin' sunbathers.  Not a good pool if you want to order tropical fancy drinks and sit nestled amongst manmad rock formations spurting out little waterfalls.  Never fear!  That place exists at the hotel just north of the Mahana.  Plus you can eat there and sign for your meals.

This place is ideal if you want amazing ocean views and sounds. And if you want to waste no time getting to the beach for long, exploratory walks.  I recommend buying a waterproof camera and taking crazy water-frolicking pictures.

Other useful info: this hotel is an hour's drive from the airport, sits on what is considered Maui's best beach, and is one of many resorts and hotels along this coast.  The water immediately below is unswimmable because it's a coral reef- however you can walk a few yards in either direction and swim your little hearts out. There is no restaurant but you can sign for your meals at 2 restaurants next door.

Let me start by saying the room we stayed in was very nice, and being ocean front is breath taking.  But their staff is terrible!
We called them on our drive from the airport to get directions.  (I printed them out that morning but forgot to pack them in my carry-on!)  It was around 530pm on a Friday afternoon (Memorial Day weekend), and I asked the lady that answered the phone for directions.  She sounded exasperated, said that she was the only employee working, and she had a lot of customers waiting to check in, so I'd have to call back.  ONLY ONE EMPLOYEE AT 530PM ON A FRIDAY NIGHT ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND?!?!
So we called my Little Brother back in California and he got directions on-line.
We went to the grocery store on the way, because the last thing we wanted was to be part of the many customers waiting to check-in.  We got to the resort around 700pm, and were pleasantly surprised to see an empty lobby.  We went to the counter, and the lady started bitching and moaning about how she's been working for so many hours without a break, that she was hungry but couldn't eat because she was the only one there, etc., etc.  We finally got our keys and went to our room.
The hallways are outdoor ones, giving it the sense of a Motel 6 from the outside.
The next morning, I noticed that the carpet under the air conditioner in the living room was soaked, so we called at 930am to ask for somebody from engineering to come up to the room while we were out.  We got back around 330pm, and it was still soaked.  We called the front desk again and they promised to send somebody up.  We went out to dinner and got back around 630pm to find that the covers for the air conditioners in the living room and the bedroom were unscrewed and leaning against the walls.  We called the front desk AGAIN, and this time we were told the engineer hadn't had a chance to come by our room yet!  I explained that, obviously, he had.  My wife went down to the front desk, and on her way, she saw the engineer, and he promised to come up in two minutes.  And he did.
But all he did was screw the covers back on the wall, lay down towels over the wet spots, and said someone would have to come back tomorrow to fix it.
I was furious, and called the front desk to ask for the manager on duty.  What I was told I still don't believe; I was told that, on weekends, there IS no manager on duty, nor was there a supervisor to talk to!  So I called Aston's central reservations to see if they could help, and of course, they couldn't.  So I asked to speak to HIS manager, and yep, you guessed it, he said that THEY don't have a manager or supervisor on the weekends, either!
When we returned to our room the next afternoon, there was some sort of carpet drying device in our living room that was loud as hell.  We finally turned it off around 830pm.  At 915pm, with a "do not disturb" sign on our door, somebody knocked twice, and I'm 99% sure it was the hotel, trying to get their carpet dryer back!
The pool is very small and the Jacuzzi is set at 103 degrees, which for adults is on the high side, but for kids, it's extremely too high.
We picked this place because eight other Yelpers had given it five star ratings.  I'm guessing no body else had to deal with the incompetent staff.

I'm sitting in our room/condo here at the Mahana as we speak..err, as I type..and on day 3 of our 8 day stay, I'm quite happy with the place. The desk clerk checking us in (Lana) was very friendly; when she originally assigned us a ground floor condo, my fiance asked for one up higher, & she happily did some looking and found us this lovely condo on the 4th floor (much better ocean view from here). The condo is lovely & well appointed: there's a roomy living room, good sized dining area, decent sized kitchen, and a large bedroom. The bathroom's spread out between two rooms with the sink & counter outside of the room where the toilet and shower are; on between the two is a closet with shelf space and a washer & dryer. The decor is nice & tropical but not gaudily so; the carpet is just a bit on the dirty side near the door, but that's to be expected with light colored carpet, I suppose, & isn't dirty enough to be off-putting.

The pool is on the small side for such a good sized resort & the jacuzzi was closed for repairs or some such thing when we were there yesterday; there were workers milling around the area, though, so perhaps they got it fixed after we left.

My only real bummer with the Mahana is the lack of a restaurant on the premises. We have access to two other local resorts with restaurants where we can charge our room here for our meal, but there are times you just don't want to have to go anywhere to get your meal. I guess those times are when the kitchen - and the very convenient nearby grocery store - come in handy.

On the upside, the ocean is basically right outside our window, & the wall to ceiling window in the living room combined with the private lanai that we can access from the living room AND our bedroom provide plenty of view..and sound. The sound of the waves can be very loud if you have both sliding glass doors open (especially if it's very windy & the waves are extra large), but I find it to be soothing.

Definitely a great place to stay..I recommend it highly & would be happy to return (again and again!).
