It doesn't get better than Assaggi in Ferndale or Pleasant Ridge! I've never had a bad meal, and the service is family friendly. I love that the owners are really interested in what and how their customers experience is! The fact that they are a higher end dining place that has been successful in Ferndale is a testiment that it can be done. Your butternut squash ravioli last night was perfect! The escargo appetizer was a surprise and happy we tried it! We've been happy to be welcomed several time and am looking for to many more. Your hard work is evident in your menu, staff, and consistancy!

Sometimes, when I'm in the mood to pretend I'm rich, I go to Assaggi. And order champagne before my meal.
The food is expensive, but it this case, you get what you pay for. Everything is delicious and fresh. The food is traditionally comforting, but with that modern twist that many local Italian eateries are lacking. The waitstaff is old school and I love it.
The patio in back is so lush with greenery and twinkly lights you'd never know it backed up to the parking lot. They even grow some of their own produce in a little garden back there.
It's the perfect place to go all out on a nice, long, and leisurely dinner. Go in the summer and request a table outside for maximum enjoyment. Great date spot! -
Review from Joe B.
Assaggi has their food perfected or pretty close to. There are several enticing items on their menu and you can see into the kitchen as the chef prepares them. The Pizza Bianca sounds amazing and the short ribs I'll have to return for. On our visit I opted to start with some martinis and an order of Calamari Frito - my go to app that I use as a litmus test. The martinis were A-OK but the calamari was superb. It was served with spinach and cherry tomatoes, which my lady friend loved, but the steak calamari itself was literally the most tender I've ever had anywhere, lightly dusted and flash fried.
For our entrees I ordered Veal Scallopine for myself and scallops over risotto for her. The veal cutlets were tender and delicious and were served covering the gnocchi with spinach on the side. The gnocchi was decent, perhaps a little heavy and there needed to be A LOT more at nearly $30 a plate (I think I got 10 with two medium sized cutlets).
My girl thoroughly enjoyed her scallops and the risotto! I had some of what she took home. At around midnight the risotto called to me and it didn't disappoint. The scallop, even after being boxed up and refrigerated was amazing, well seasoned and seared perfectly. The risotto was very very good even cold with herbs or perhaps threads of spinach running through it!
The service was impeccable even with a packed house and I believe the owners even stopped by the table though they didn't introduce themselves. All in all a very nice meal...my only gripe is that for the cost I would've liked a little more food on my plate. I went home a little hungry and for what we ordered, paid a tiny fortune...but definitely worth a try. -

The atmosphere is very nice and I am sure eating on the patio would be pleasant on a warm summer evening.
The menu is interesting and offers small or large portions for several items. The food prices were reasonable - especially for the pizza, salads and half portion items.
My girl had the pork tender loin that appeared to be a whole loin. It was very good.
I had the Mongolian Duck Legs. Very different, for this area, and very good.
The drink prices are OUTRAGEOUS!!! I would advise you to have your wine or cocktail across the street before dinner. The wine starts at $9.00. I had a Robroy (bar scotch) for $10.00. EXPENSIVE TO ME !!!! -

This is truly one of those out-of-the-way dining jewels. Have returned many times and never disappointed. The owners have always been on premises and they orchestra an exceptional dining experience. And the most important thing of all, the food is very, very good.

Review from Emily L.
My experience at Assaggi began with a rocky start (but thankfully, I enjoyed the rest of the evening thoroughly). My wine-expert dining companions ordered a bottle that they were out of. Okay... they tried another. Oh, we're out of that too. Okay... more deliberation over the wine list... how about this one... oh, we're out of that one as well. Our server told us that they were out of ten wines that evening, and our table had just happened to choose three of them just now. My friends asked for the list of 86'd wines, and the server came back with a handwritten list of bin numbers. There were way more than ten wines on that list, more like 16. This irritated me a bit.
But then our fourth try arrived, as well as a basket of fresh pita and olive oil, and all was forgotten. The pita bread was nice and hot. The olive oil was pretty ordinary and had some bland spices in it. I'd thought it would be za'atar or something, but it was not very flavorful and was undersalted.
I got the sea scallops, which were delicious. For $27, the dish was a little more than I'd wanted to spend for a light 9:00 pm dinner, but it had stood out to me on the menu, and the server also said it was his favorite dish (ahhh I am such a sucker for those kinds of comments). There were four large scallops that had been seared perfectly. One of my dining companions, who is lactose intolerant, asked the server beforehand if there was any butter in the dish. The server assured him that the scallops were made with olive oil... but they tasted so buttery to me. The scallops were served atop pea tendrils, peapods, fingerling potatoes, and a carrot reduction. The carrot reduction was good and complemented the scallops well.
The pea tendrils turned out to be raw and difficult to eat, as they were long and stringy, and I had to saw at them with my knife. The peapods were also raw, which was kind of weird, but were not as awkward to eat as the pea tendrils. I think the pea tendrils and peapods would have been better if they had been sauteed or stir-fried. The fingerling potatoes were pretty good, but they had been cut into tiny penny slices, which I thought was odd too. Despite these minor complaints, I really enjoyed my dish.
In all, I enjoyed everything except for the wine ordering and the awkward pea tendrils, hence the 1 star off.
Also, my dining companions got some amazing-looking dishes, and now I totally want to go back and try them:
-Tomato basil soup with a polenta crouton. I am not the biggest fan of polenta, but this looked like a giant hunk of deep-fried polenta, and we all know that deep frying anything makes it better/piques my interest.
-Some sort of chilled green soup that did not have cream in it and therefore looked very refreshing. I forget what vegetable was in it.
-Potato parmesan gnocchi with sauteed wild mushrooms, wilted spinach, veal reduction, and truffle oil. This looked soooo good, and my dining companion said this was his favorite gnocchi in metro Detroit.
All of the other entrees (including a roasted pear pizza) sounded really good too.
The menu changes seasonally, so I will be scheming up reasons to go back (since it is a little pricier than what I normally spend). -

Love the food. Nice wine list. But the server named Mark is very snotty and condescending towards his guests. I felt like alot if his comments and input were unnecessary. Don't assume people dont know things or cannot afford them. You would be surprised who you are really dealing with...... Anyways, the owners are sweet as can be so that is why I will always go back for more and more! Lucky to have this spot in the neighborhood.

Assaggi is our go-to place when we want a bit of a splurge in the neighborhood. Yes, it's pricey, but there is a level of service and ambiance that goes along with the food to make everything come together and make it worth the money.
The menu isn't the most crazy-inventive in this price range, but I'd say there is enough creativity to satisfy most jaded palates. I've never gone there and been at a loss for something to order (when in doubt, try the lamb chops; the fish dishes are also consistently good). Their menu seems to vary a little, with some items remaining constant and others rotating in and out. The wine list is solid and it's not hard to find a good bottle for a reasonable price.
The most recent time I came here, a girlfriend and I shared the antipasti platter and an order of the mushroom gnocchi. The olives and grilled vegetables on the platter were a bit odd-tasting, but there was an amazing burrata cheese on it that more than made up for it. The gnocchi were alright, but from the description I thought they were going to be much more mushroomy. They were also a bit burnt. I'm sure they would have re-made it if we'd said something, but we were getting full so we just picked around the burned ones. I should say that this is the ONLY time I've ever had an issue with any of the food here; on other visits it's been great.
I almost don't want to share this for selfish reasons, but since you've read this far: ask for Mark as your server, he is outstanding. This past visit we had someone else- he knew very little about the wine (describing all the white wines as "sweet"... a total turnoff) and I think it may have been because of his lack of pacing that our gnocchi were overdone. Also, check out the patio out back in nice weather. -

Ferndale, MI
This place was kind of expensive. Expensive = $130 but included dinner for 2 with salad, a bottle of wine, one desert to share and tip. For a non-typical, date dinner - i don't think that's all that bad. Especially because the food was AMAZING. This is by far one of the best meals i've ever had in a restaurant. I had the sea bass special, my husband had the lamb chops, both of us cleaned our plates. also for desert we had the Mediterranean banana - it was SO GOOD.
When i eat really good food i get this angry look on my face as i'm chewing. I'm not upset, but more perplexed as to how food can taste this good. This is probably why the waiter kept returning to my table to ask if everything was ok. Yes sir, everything was more than ok - now leave me alone so i can lick my plate clean. -

I'm not sure if it's a good idea I write this review this early in the morning seeing as I will be salivating the rest of the day just thinking about my meal I had here over the weekend!
I agree with Lifeliver- very creative cuisine.
I actually ended up here on accident as another restaurant I wanted to try was closed. We were seated promptly on the back patio (no wait on a Saturday night @ 7ish). It is next to a flat lot (parking lot), but you would NEVER even notice. Heat lamps, a peaceful waterfall, and soothing music cater to this rather serene atmosphere.
Upon my first bite of my starter salad, I knew this was going to be a place where I wanted to lick my plate clean. I was hoping my entree was as delicious.
First, I want to give a little back story on the "ordering of the entree." My friend asked the waitress how the scallops were, "Exquisite, they are absolutely to-die-for. Also the Veal scallopini and Lamb are amazing as well." Well, I wanted the flank steak. I sat there thinking, why didn't she mention the flank steak? So I asked her thoughts on the flank steak and she replied with, "Definitely get it medium rare." Not the most reassuring answer I had hoped for, but seeing as I am stubborn I went with it anyway. Now my question to her is, "WHY WOULDN'T YOU MENTION THE FLANK STEAK?!"
needless to say, I loved it. I loved the atmosphere, the company, and most importantly the food.
I absolutely cannot wait to go back. Also, don't rely on the website for having an updated menu. I took a little look-see and the entrees are different- but it may give you an idea of the type of fare they serve! -
Review from Henry B.
I hear it's better to go here when you can sit outside here. I had to dine in.
I was here for an EatUp with some friends of mine. I had heard good things about this place. I had their chicken breast dish half-order. It was a pretty sizable meal still!
I was impressed by the food and the service but I hate it when restaurants tack on 20% automatically when there's 6+ people. It's tacky and they're basically saying that they don't trust us enough to put enough of a tip.
The waiter there was an eye-roller too when we were trying to give him our credit cards and cash. He didn't do separate checks for us like we wanted.
Good food, good atmosphere. Bad debacle at the end. -

Summary: some of the best service and food in Michigan.
4.5 stars on the yelp scale - "big fan" - I'm rounding up.
========
SERVICE
========
From the moment you walk in (either from the back or front) someone greets you and points you in the right direction and offers to take your coats. It's very welcoming and it's often by one of the owners who is always present.
From the get go, you know that these people care about the details.
The waitstaff is great. Some things that make them noteworthy
- they understand the concept of "waiting". They are there when
you need something, yet they're
unobtrusive.
- They "mark" the table - making sure you have the right utensils for
the next item they are bringing.
- They know how to gauge timing.
They'll ask how you want your ordered brought out if you order, say,
6 small plates like we did.
- They really know the wine list. They can describe the wine. They steered me away from one choice and suggested a different wine I knew nothing about (which was cheaper and fantastic). They ask how the wine is for you.
- They're consummate professionals. Friendly but not overbearing. Easy going, not pretentious but know the food in great detail.
FOOD
=====
One great dish after another. Some items are seasonal, but the soups have all been great.
ORDER THE SAVORY LENTIL PANCAKES - DO IT. DO IT NOW.
The sherry forest mushroom cream sauce is surprisingly light and crazy rich at the same time.
I'd like to tell you a few stand-outs, but everything stood out. So here's a few to contemplate:
Almond crusted brie cheese salad; the lightest potato-parm gnochhi you've seen - with truffle oil, veal reduction.
Great risotto; great pasta.
Dessert - a banana baked in filo with a tiny bit of an ice cream and pistachios. Also a spot-on creme brulee.
The only item that didn't float my boat was a roasted pear and cambazola (cheese) pizza. Not that it was bad - it was well executed with great ingredients. It was just really big and really rich. Too much for an appetizer unless you were sharing it with 4 other people.
============
Been there twice in as as many months - it's the fall so we've sat inside.
4.5 stars on the yelp scale - "big fan". -

As always the service is terrific. There is nothing better than having the owner come up to you to ask how is the food, service, etc., and spend a few minutes chatting. The Flatiron steak was wonderful: tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The chocolate lava cakes was taste of heaven.
We are able to enjoy the outdoor patio, which makes you forget that just on the other side of the shrubs, is the parking lot. -
Review from Dave S.
I agree with Henry B's post that it is better to go here when you can sit outside. I went to Assaggi for the first time last night and sat on the patio and it was splendid. Perfect weather and an all around great atmosphere.
This is another place where it appeared like there was a lot of regulars and the owners were right there by the door to greet people and to see them off after the meal.
First course, included a Pizza Bianca, Margherita Pizza, and the Calamari. I didn't try the Bianca because frankly it didn't look appetizing at all. I think between four people we only finished about half of it. I thought the Margherita was tasty, similar to other types of wood-grilled Pizzas I've had, but not as good as Angelina's Bistro downtown. The calamari were shrimp style which I love but I thought the portion was lacking. It was served almost like a salad and for $11 wasn't a great deal. I think when you get strip, or crab cakes, or scallops as an appetizer you can expect to not get more than a few, but calamari is a cheaper seafood and shouldn't be skimped. I also think it's important to note that the bread and oil are not good. They had some average pita and very bland oil to go with it. It only took me one bite to realize I'd had enough.
Next I went with the soup of the day, corn chowder. I thought it was good but I could have used some fresh ground pepper. I already dug in too much and didn't want to let me soup get cold waiting to get our waiters attention. Overall though it was good, nice fresh corn and big chunks of potato with 3 healthy pieces of lump crab in the middle.
For the main course I went with the Lamb Chops (5) and thought they were maybe some of the best I've had. I thought they were seasoned well and I liked the pinot noir sauce. The standard mashed potatoes and green beans were what you'd expect.
I ended up passing on dessert because I was so full. Next time I think I will try one of their shakes though, the Raspberry Hummer. They also had a dark chocolate martini that sounded good.
Overall, if I could I think I would rate Assaggi more like a 3.5. It wasn't just OK but it wasn't AWESOME. -

Summary: I knew it would be good when we had hot, fresh pita on the table after being seated for 5 minutes, and it only got better from there.
With a http://Restaurant.com certificate in hand, a friend and I hit up Assaggi last night. While my parents go every few months, I haven't been there since not long after it opened (it's been years and years). I remembered liking it, but thinking it was pretty expensive at the time. It's still just as good, if not better, and it's still a bit spendy, but worth it.
We came in at 6:30pm on a Wednesday. I made a reservation, but we certainly didn't need it - 6:30 is pretty early for dinner, and it's a mid-week night. While there is outdoor seating, it was 90 outside, so we had a big table for two by the front window. The restaurant is lined with huge windows, so it's nice and bright inside.
Our waiter was very helpful, and the busboy kept our water glasses full (I polished mine off right after we sat down - it was hot out!). Plus, they brought over a basket of fresh, hot pita and a dish of herbed olive oil. Mmm... you had me at "hot bread", Assaggi.
We started with the meze appetizer, which is a large dinner plate full of middle eastern snacks. Of course, I had to ask for more pita, since I plowed through the first few... Anyway, the meze appetizer is perfect for 2-3 hungry people to share. The center is a super-garlicky (yum!) hummus (rather coarse, but I loved it). Around the hummus was a scoop of tabbouleh; a few small stuffed grape leaves; small cubes of feta (not very good; definitely not from Greece); large cubes of beet (the menu said roasted, but they looked pickled to me, so I didn't try); monster olives (a few mild green and a few very strong black); and small balls of labne (a very thick, Greek-like yogurt) rolled in herbs. It was fantastic. The labne was particularly good, especially mashed up with a green olive and tucked into my warm pita...
For dinner, we both ordered the pan-seared sea scallops. They come served on a rectangular plate, with 4 giant scallops, each one with a beautiful, buttery sear. The outsides were just perfect, with a buttery, salty crisp and a very tender middle. It's so easy to overcook scallops; these were perfect. The scallops sit on a lovely but messy nest of sliced snap pea pods, the curling tendrils from the peas, thin sliced fingerling potatoes (maybe one potato in total), a drizzle of carrot reduction (sweet, but not very flavorful) and a bit of balsamic reduction.
Personally, I only cared about the scallops. The potatoes were hardly noticeable, the peas kept shooting out of the sliced pods, and the pea tendrils were hard to cut and hard to eat; tasty but stringy. Still, I would absolutely order it again, just for the scallops. I knocked one star off the review because the scallop entree was more like scallops with a pretty garnish, rather than a portion of vegetables worth eating - which I would have preferred. I wouldn't even mind if the plate was nekkid - just buttery scallops - but the menu made it seem like the other items (peas, tendrils, potatoes) were more than just garnish.
No problems with using the http://Restaurant.com certificate. Dinner was wonderful and the service was great. I will go back! -
Review from Parisa K.
Detroit, MI
My friend brought me here for a birthday dinner because she knew there would be a variety vegetarian items (there was I time when I was a loyal non-meat eater), dishes that were not like the typical limited options I usually had when we'd go out.
I immediately got very excited by a handful of items on the menu I had to have. Never one to pass up an opportunity to splurge, my friend decided we should just order it all. Did I say we both used to live by leftovers? Anyway, the first dish came out and we were ecstatic (I think we were both starving at that point, too). We quickly devoured much of the dish, and then patiently waited for the next one. Then we waited some more... and some more. It got to the point where we asked our waiter what the hold up was. Apparently, this was the kind of place where you eat course by course, each course coming out separately, one after the other. This style of eating wasn't really in par with our style of eating which included ordering many items, eating little of each, and taking a bunch home.
Nevertheless, we explained to the waiter how we wanted our food to come out as it was ready, and while it took a little explaining, he eventually obliged (I think he boxed up our items as we ate, though, so we never had more than one course on the table).
Anyway, while I remember the experience of eating, I cannot remember a single thing we had. What I do know, however, is that I loved the place so much, I went back there several times in the next few months, even dragging my family a few times, including for father's day dinner (especially cuz the food, while scrumptious, is pretty much out of my budget).
Over the years, I have continued to enjoy Assaggi's extensive and eclectic menu. Now that I am eating meat again, I have been able to take even more advantage of the inventive cuisine. I also love the outdoor patio area, which is so cute and quaint and just happy looking. Over the years, my style of eating has changed as well, so now I order to get leftovers, so I'm not sure if they still serve the food course by course, but however it comes out, it's both beautiful and delicious. -
Review from Peggah G.
I am a picky eater and this place is NOT for me. My parents aren't very picky, and they didn't like it that much either.
I have the wondrous pleasure of being family friends with Parisa K. , so I was there for the father's day lunch. I remember not liking ANYTHING on the menu, and having to substitute a million things for an appetizer order of pizza.
And it was expensive.
And not too delicious. I only ate about two pieces and tries to give it to my parents, but they were not impressed or happy with it either. -

I have been to this restaurant several times. Unfortunately, they've had the same menu every time. Very limited menu, with great food, but i'd expect a place such as this to switch it up every so often.
Great place to eat. Great food. -
Review from Dane K.
Cute little place in Ferndale... They have a nice "Tuscan Patio" out back.
The menu has quite a variety of things, but it's not huge, which I prefer. It's Mediterranean, but Italian Mediterranean, not Grecian or other areas more often associated with Mediterranean in this neck of the woods.
The waiter was a character. He was like my bosses twin, I should set them up. He's very set in his ways... We told him "we'd start with this" for appetizer, then we were going to decide on the next course while he put that in. He was very against this, and insisted we should put it all in at once. So we did... Once we warmed up to him and vice versa he was a great waiter though and obviously knew his stuff.
The crowd seemed like they get a lot of regulars, it was quite mixed between girls night out, dates, empty nesters, and a few people with their kids..
We started with mussels and a tomato mozzarella salad. The tomato mozzarella was simple but fantastic. The mussels were very good as well.
For my entree I had Veal Scaloppini served with fresh made gnocci and a few veggies... It was quite tasty, I really liked the sauce.
For dessert we had a banana wrapped in philo dough, served with ice cream. It was surprisingly very delicious. -

I had a late lunch there this week and was very pleased with the experience. The service was excellent, though a little slow for mid afternoon. The food was superb and the atmosphere was very relaxing. I would recommend it highly. I plan on coming back again. I'm especially interested in seeing it in warmmer weather when the patio is open.

Love this place. Especially in the summer when you can sit on the patio and pretend you're somewhere exotic (not that there's anything wrong with SE MI). As another reviewer said, they treat you like royalty. We've had several celebrations at Assaggi... one particularly rowdy one in 2004... and they still let us eat there! It's just a darn good place for dinner (or lunch). I've not had a bad dinner there ever. I don't like lamb, but the twice cooked lamb is dee-licious! The salads are crisp; the soup not to be missed... and the mezza plate is a treat! The wait staff is great and they all have a hearty good sense humor (verr-rry important!). Also, I always enjoy seeing George at Eastern Market, then seeing the plants in the garden out back!

After almost 6 years of living in Ferndale we ventured to Assaggi for our anniversary. What an incredible experience! We started with a great bottle of red recommended by George and the calamari appetizer, entrees ordered at the table were halibut, duck, scallops and gnocchi; as we were a sharing bunch I was able to try each and was completely impressed by all. The quality was top notch, fresh ingredients, exceptional service and friendly visits from the owners. The only sad moment of the evening was when I realized that for nearly six years Assaggi has been in my backyard and it was only then that we made it there for dinner. I am looking forward to heading back!

I travel on business and get a chance to enjoy some very, very nice restaurants from across the country. I have eaten in London, Paris, Frankfort and more. Crazy as it sounds, one of the nicest of all is 15 minutes from my home in downtown Ferndale. Assaggi has great service, spectacular food, an interesting and varied menu. This place is, without a doubt, the best restaurant that nobody's ever heard of.

Assaggi is still on of my favorite great places to eat. The food is always inventive and worth every penny. Josie is always smiling when guests arrive and George is great with his wine selections. He's the only one in town I would consider to let him select a wine for me. That's a great compliment from a wine snob like me!

Creative cuisine. A different take on typical Mediterranean. Very, very good appetizers, seafood, and wine. Wonderful, cozy, quiet outdoor patio. I recommend Branzini alla Livornese - a Mediterranean Sea Bass cooked to perfection! Good service and friendly owners. Valet available.

only been here once, and had a decent experience.
good wine, good service, good ambiance.
the good: love the outdoor seating and garden. loved the goat cheese mashed potatoes. waiter was attentive and courteous.
the bad: felt like it was overpriced for what it was. the lamb chops (3) were a little inconsistent. i ordered medium rare, and the first chop i ate was well done. not enough to ruin the meal, but well done. the second chop i had was more medium, and the third was perfectly medium rare.
notes: wanted to try the desserts, but didn't feel like we needed to, so maybe next time. instead, had a dark chocolate martini, which was good, but knocked me on my ass.
bottom line: i'll most likely go back, but not a place i'll be stopping the presses for. -

When you want that special night out and you want everything to be perfect, this is where you should go. All of the food is wonderful with special accolades to the scallops and fillet mignon. When on the menu the Chilean sea bass is exceptional as well. The brick oven pizzas are inventive and tasty. In the summer, the outdoor patio in back is very inviting.

I've been here dozens of time since Assaggi opened and have never been disappointed. It just keeps getting better. George nurtures the fresh herb garden and wine list while Josie attends to the guests with grace and charm. Assaggi attracts a broad clientele from the metro area and will continue to attract me for any occasion - it's the best.
