San Francisco, CA
I have always liked this place. The food is healthy and tasty and consistent, but what moved me to write a review years after first trying it is the awesome service that you would not expect from an order-at-the-counter place. It was the first time I ever ordered something I didn't like, and I was ready to not complain and quietly decide not to come back, but they changed my mind! I ordered a new dish they were trying out, that they said was gluten-free. In fact, I never knew they had an entire gluten-free menu with a lot of things on it, which is nice. Unfortunately, there were 2 problems. First, one of the items in the new dish was not gluten-free, and second, the chicken on the gluten-free menu is not a skewer, but a part of an actual chicken. On the regular menu, this is clear, but not on the special gf one. I realize that I probably shouldn't eat chicken if I have trouble hacking the meat off the bones myself, but that's a separate discussion!
When they brought the food out, they just left out the thing that wasn't gluten-free. The good news is, they caught the mistake before they brought it out and I ate it, but I would have changed my order had I known that part would be missing. Maybe the guy who brought the food realized I was unhappy, because pretty soon the young guy who took the order came over. I hate to complain, but he assured me that the chicken thing had happened before, and that if I didn't like the food they would bring me something else, no problem. At that point I just ordered a salad, so he made suggestions and even gave me a refund for the dish I didn't like.
I used to work retail, and I always liked that the company I worked for maintained that the customer leaving happy is the most important thing, even if you lose money in the short-term. That was certainly the case here. Now I will continue to recommend Asqew! -

I gave you a second chance Asqew, but you effed me again! Maybe it's because both times were for delivery? Who knows, that's not a good enough excuse.
Each time, my order was a half hour late and I had to call to find out they're short a driver and there's nothing that can be done. Additionally, no idea when exactly the order will reach me. When asked why I didn't get an update it's 'because the Manager's not doing it'. Bad work ethics, management and customer service experience.
NEVER AGAIN! -

We stopped by here while walking along Haight when their $3 Happy Hour menu called our name. Good thing we listened and went in because the food was awesome!
We tired pretty much everything on the happy hour menu and everything was delicious! The grilled ribs, grilled wings, grilled corn on the cob, zucchini sticks, asparagus, etc.. And everything came out fresh, cooked perfectly on the grill.
And I can't remember the dude's name (sorry dude, I must have had too much of the $3 beer) but he was friendly, helpful and attentive.
I will definitely be stopping by here every time I'm up in San Francisco. -

I should say that Asqew's food is absolutely awesome. I already knew that before coming in, since I've had their food delivered (via grubhub) to my home a few times before. This, however, was my first visit in person.
In short, I was impressed by the young men on the wait staff. They were clearly very busy, but were at all times very kind and attentive.
Even when I notified them that the restroom needed to be restocked with soap and paper towels, they not only tended to it quickly, but they thanked me for notifying them of the need.
This is service I'm not used to seeing in the city - much less on Haight Street!
Good work guys! Loved the burger. I'll come enjoy it in person more often! -

Tried this place out for the first time today... The bf was very excited to take me here...
All he could say was this place wasn't the same... My thai beef skewer was raw and I asked to grill it a second time... It came back still raw ( see pic posted) I sent the whole thing back n ate some of the rice, they didn't even apologize or offer a refund... Don't get me wrong I like my beef rare NOT raw... I didn't even eat the skewer... $8.00 for flavored rice...
The bf got the Texas BBQ skewers n they put the sauce(store bought) on the corn then grilled it... Imagine what that tastes like... Not good... Burnt charcoal...
This place is over rated and from what the bf says NOT what it used to be... Just a bunch of hype for nothing... -

There's so many things to like about this place. First, their simplified menu which tells you exactly how to order. Pick from a multitude of combinations of skewer flavors and sides/salads. Also, this is the first place I've seen that has a stamp card system for your smartphone. The grill is right there in-house with a massive ventilation system sucking out all the smoke so the place doesn't stink up. I got the cilantro lime chicken, balsamic beef, and the garlic mashed potatoes and everything was good. Amateur grillers (such as myself) suck the moisture out of proteins leaving dried meats which might as well go straight to curing for jerky. But it's always impressive to bite into a grilled piece of meat and have it come out juicy. Mind blown.

The trip to Asqew Grill started off bad enough. We were served warm soda and when we asked for ice, we found out there wasn't any. That seems like a glaring oversight to me.
But when the food actually came out, we completely forgot about the drinks sitting in front of us. My BBQ burger was nice and juicy. The taste floored me. My garlic mashed potatoes were rich and delicious. The asparagus was equally as tasty. All around, it was a very solid meal, sans the soda.
That being said, I lift my warm drink and toast to you, Asqew Grill. Thank you for making my stomach happy! -

What a great find for us on our vacation (thank you, Yelp!). Fun atmosphere and excellent food. We came here specifically because one of our group has a wheat allergy, so the gluten-free menu was an instant plus for us.
The butternut squash soup is AMAZING, the cilantro-lime rice is fantastic, and the grilled pear salad was out of this world.
Highly recommended! -

Overpriced simple soul food.
Food was all burnt. My friend and i were hungry and even the lemons, salad, or warm slowly served water could save this place. Would recommend the McDonald's down the road before I would stop at this place again. -

Everything that I've had here has been good, nothing over the top or beyond amazing but still yummy. They deliver, which is also nice. I am a fan of the chicken skewers with rice. Their sides change from time to time, the veggies are usually pretty good.

I friggin' love Asqew Grill. I've loved it for years. And when they dropped the Pesto chicken kebabs I thought I'd be significantly discouraged from going back. But the cilantro chicken over mashed or jasmine rice is as good as I'll ever get to that Pesto so I'll happily take that.

This place used to be sooooooo much better!! I guess expansion has taken the quality down a couple notches. and where are the awesome jumpsuit uniforms?!! Anyway, that's neither here nor there. I went there craving the balsamic beef which is what I ordered. After 15 minutes of waiting our plates arrived. When it arrived I saw that the balsamic sauce was on the side. I poured that deliciousness all over my skewer, took a bite, and spit that sweet crap out into my napkin! It wasn't balsamic sauce! What the hell was it!?!
I went to the counter to tell them that the sauce was wrong and they said "oh, the balsamic is still frozen so we gave you the thai bbq sauce instead." WHO DOES THAT!?? I thought that if a place was out of something they're supposed to inform you, not just change the order on you. RIDICULOUS!
I'm giving it 2 stars because I'm assuming not all the employees are as incompetent as the cook was that day! -
Review from Margareth H.
San Jose, CA
My boyfriend and I are big Haight St shoppers, but we never ate around the area simply because we have no freakin' clue where and what's good?!?! But on this particular day, we were starving. And if my boyfriend is starving, all shopping must be dropped so the hungry bear can eat. Likewise, that is just what we did.
We went to the first restaurant we saw which was Asqew Grill. My first impression was, that's all they have on their menu? My boyfriend ordered the Thai Salmon with Coconut Cilantro rice and I ordered the Cilantro Lime Kabob with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes. We also got the breadsticks as an appetizer. The breadsticks came with marinara sauce, which was overall pretty good but not much else to rave about. Our entrees, however, is worthy of being raved. Though I did not try my bf's Thai Salmon, being the bear that he is... he killed it before I got a chance to poke my fork in his food. I did try his Coconut Cilantro rice and it was delicious! I did not think Coconut and Cilantro would go together especially in rice, but the flavors were just right. I loved my kabob and mashed potatoes. The chicken was not dry, which is something most of us are afraid of when it comes to chicken. I am a huge fan of that sour and tangy kick in your chicken, which is just what I got. The portion of 1 kabob and mashed potatoes is a pretty good size, filled me up and I was starving before the meal. We both really enjoyed our meal and left happy - if the bf is happy, that means more shopping time for me! Woot woot!
Though we have not tried other places in the Haight St area, we would love to come back here! -
Review from Terra S.
San Mateo, CA
This place has some really great things and some not so great things. I ordered the tofu skewers with a side of citrus cous cous and a mac and cheese appetizer plate. My friends ordered tofu/mashed potatoes, burgers, and salads (pear and chopped).
The good stuff:
*tofu skewer was pretty tasty and came with a few veggies (broccoli, onion, red bell pepper)-good flavor, just the right size, good mix of veggies, cooked well
*it was served on a bed of cous cous. wasn't super flavorful, but good enough
*loved the cabbage that was on the plate too--shredded and either pickled or soaked in balsamic or something like that--complemented the cous cous and skewer nicely
*though I didn't try them, the salads looked and were apparently really tasty and HUGE (especially for a side that comes with the main dish)
*the price was really reasonable. i also liked that the portions weren't huge and i actually felt pretty healthy with my choice
The not so good stuff:
*the mac and cheese was barely edible. it left a chalky feeling in my mouth. this is typically the kind of dish that i can't get enough of, but i didn't even eat half the plate i bought, and i ended up feeling pretty miserable afterward
*they don't exactly separate the veggie stuff from the meat stuff on the grill. not a huge deal breaker but could be on my pickier days of vegetarianism
Would I go back? Probably. But I wasn't blown away. -

Ordered tofu skewers over cous cous and a half rack of ribs.
Tofu was dry and bland. Cous cous was seasoned well, but cold.
Ribs were tough and dry (no wonder they give you a steak knife), garlic potatoes were bland, and the cole slaw was just a tasteless grated pile of what were once vegetables.
None of the food was hot. Incredibly overpriced for the messy cold plates of blandness. Stay away from this chain. -

Asqew...are awesome!
I am pleased that my first review as a brand spankin' new Bay area resident is you!
I was wandering around the Haight with my hubby and friend (we all just moved here 3 days ago) and weren't sure where to grab a beer and good bite to eat. As we approached your open windows, the aroma of deliciousness wandered up our nostrils and we were drawn inside to scope out your menu.
Healthy, inexpensive, and plentiful in all sorts of vegetarian and carnivore skewer options, we ordered away! We got some Texas and other chicken skewers (their Texas BBQ sauce is so good!) and my friend got a portabello one. The pear salad, citrus cous cous, and polenta were all excellent side options that came with the skewers. I would highly recommend their polenta, it's quite amazing.
The food is prepared fresh, ingredients are great, and service is really good/friendly. I also noticed that you can order to go and it looked like you can get delivery as well. Very cool. I will be back again! :)Listed in: San Fran Food Fanatics

I've eaten at this askew a handful of times. Usually get the steak skewers and salad. For some reason it feels like this place is overpriced based on the amound of food you get. The Skewers portions are small so you almost have to get 2. The salad is decent but seems to be inconsistent. Twice I went to Askew and the side salad consisted of lettuce and dressing. However, the other night it had other veggies in there. I find it just o.k. Service always seems to be on the slow side and orders seem to take at least 15 minutes which seems way to long to wait for a burger or skewers.

There's just something about this place that I love. Ask me to put my finger on it? I can't come up with the words. Perhaps it's the vibe? The culture? The location? Obviously t he food plays a part. I had the Cilantro Lime Chicken. And man was that good!! Good memories there and great service!

Great food! Great bargain! Great staff! Great take-out. I've used them to cater parties at home. Salmon is wild-caught. Neighborhood is the Haight. Hence a 4* instead of 5* You have to want to eat in the Haight, and if so, this place is it. The tables--they clean them off...is it going to win the Good Housekeeping award--probably not.
Do I eat there? All the time--for take out. But then again, I'm not 18-25. -

This is the first one-star rating I've given. Have ordered Asqew on a few occasions in the past from GrubHub and the food has been 50/50. Last time was a few months ago and everything was burned. Figured I'd give them another try and ordered tonight and my burger was so black it looked like it fell off the grill, rolled behind the stove, and into the depths of hell and then was scraped off the surface of the sun and onto a bun. I'm not a food snob... read my other reviews and ratings. You burn my burger and you're automatically on my no-eat list.

I went to Asqew for a healthy, delicious, filling meal! I hadn't been there in awhile so I thought it was a great idea for dinner.
Once I walked in, I was immediately overwhelmed with all the different options. My boyfriend and I shared the hummus plate, which was really filling and a perfect starter. I decided on a balsamic beef skewer with a mixed green salad. The beef was really flavorful and it came with mushrooms, zucchini, and peppers. There was a good portion of salad and the balsamic dressing was really creamy.
Asqew is a really great option if you want something healthy but still want to feel like you are eating a hearty meal. Though I only had one skewer and a salad, I was pretty full, and I didn't feel all gross and disgusting afterward.
Next time I want to try the cilantro lime chicken and the coconut rice. -

I was FINALLY able to head over to Haight for the first time in ages.. Sadly not to shop, but to find something to eat for dinner. We ended up deciding to try Asqew since they were open, and the menu sounded pretty healthy.
I got the balsamic beef skewers with mashed potatoes on the side. I enjoyed the beef, it wasn't overdone and had good flavor. Even the veggies were good with the balsamic glaze. The mashed potatoes were alright.. They were a bit bland for my taste, could have used more garlic and salt.
I tried a piece of francescas salmon skewer, and was pleasantly surprised. It was cooked perfectly and had the right amount of seasoning on it to not overpower the taste of the fish itself.
Service was definitely friendly, the prices are right, and the food came out quick. I would come here again. -

This is the best lunch spot in the city. Reasonably priced, great food, and healthy enough that you don't need an immediate nap after a meal.

Healthy, big salads. Fresh grilled kabobs (got salmon and tuna) and dipping sauces on the side. Bit overpriced but I was happy overall with what I got, though not sure if it would satisfy a huge appetite. The pinot didn't give me a headache, which is a good sign, will definitely come back.

Well know I am officially gluten free , I. Was quite surprised to see a decent GF. menu , the staff are friendly and the food is just what you expect from a grill , but I gotta say there isn't many places I have been to that do GF menus so that's why I give them 4 stars, the art was pretty cool too. Always a plus in my book,

Meh.
Sorry, but... meh.
Dropping by in our search to find Zipper-Boy more things to both wear and bitch about we dropped into Asqew intending on filling our bellies.
I ordered the Chicken BBQ skewer with mashed potatoes and he ordered the salmon and rice. Mine came out with two huge hunks of corn, his came out filled with meat.
-1 star
Either they were having a deficit of chicken in their kitchen, or the Chicken BBQ is simply not the way to go for bang/buck. You get about three chunks of meat, which barely makes a dent and two huge chunks of corn you can't actually cut with a knife.
Also included in my meh is the little matter of not being charged what was written on the chalkboard. I expected 8 something and paid ten something. Okay, awesome I guess I need to MENTION the deal to receive it.
..Fabulous

I am actually a big fan of this place, and I found it thanks to yelp! I go to college not too far from the Haight, so I spend a lot of time there, and I randomly popped in there with a friend one day to get a quick burger. The staff was very chill and helpful, and the food itself was amazing! I got a skewer, which was great, and he got a great teriyaki burger. Both of our meals came about ten minutes after we ordered them, and were delicious. The total cost was about 11/ person, which is definitely reasonable for the amount of food that we got. The place is in a medium sized shop in the Haight, and it didn't feel cramped at all.
I can't really think of any negatives, but the prices could always be lower! Other than that, a great place to grab a burger/ skewer and hang out.Listed in: Good Eats

I was craving happy hour on a friday right after my deathly afternoon class gets out at 5pm (SERIOUSLY, its like torture. lecture for 4 hours on a friday afternoon... COME ON!!!)
um, anyways... so you see, i was in a REAL need for happy hour!
Walked over to the haight location of asqew grill and was pleasantly surprised!
All of their apps and grilled veges are $3!!! This includes....
2 Sliders
MAC-N-CHEESE
GRILLED CORN-ON-THE-COB
GRILLED ZUCCHINI STICKS
GRILLED NEW POTATOES
GRILLED ASPARAGUS
GRILLED ARTICHOKE HALVES
RIBS APPETIZER
GRILLED BUFFALO WINGS
GRILLED STUFFED PEPPER
GRILLED BREAD STICKS
GRILLED PITA AND HUMMUS
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! yummy artichoke halves... ribs... buffalo wings (spicy!). Also tried the bread sticks (eh, its definitely something you could make at home... o hai ragu). This being said, its not like everything is DELICIOUS, i think its more so the appeal that things are cheap and there are so many options.
The beers and some wines are also $3.
We also tried their cilantro lime chicken skewers with cous cous. the skewers are decent.. nothing amazeballs, but the chicken was at least relatively tender. I love eating the grilled veges that come on the sticks. Not a big fan of the cous cous... the jasmine rice is def. better.
I WILL BE BACK FOR HAPPY HOUR. AND TO FILL OUT MY FREQUENT SKEWER CARD! =D -

I love walking down Haight St. You are sure to meet some characters any day of the week. Met some cool homeless people with very cute dogs.
Wandering down Haight St on a Sunday night thinking of what to eat. We stumbled upon Asqew because of the very healthy choices they had to offer on their menu.
I ordered the cilantro lime chicken skewer and the herb alaskan salmon skewer. Both were cooked to perfection. The vegetables on the skewer were super tasty as well. The sides I got were the coconut cilantro jasmine rice and an extra side of mashed potatoes. The potatoes were kind of bland but still good. Seemed like it needed some milk. The rice was delicious and had a pleasant taste to it. It had light flavors of coconut and cilantro.
I really wish you guys had a location around the San Mateo County. I would for sure be there at least 3 times a week. -

I called them before they were closed and asked for delivery. Even though it was before the delivery cut off time, the person answering the phones told me they were closing out all their drivers and would not make a delivery.
I can understand not wanting to do this on most nights but this was a Friday night at 8:45 PM. Hardly the service I would expect. -

DON'T order this at their location in the mall though. They end up using a different sauce which makes it taste like crap. but other than that its good at the other locations :) -

I went to Asqew Grill for the 2nd time yesterday. I ordered the mac & cheese and the Artichoke halves.
The mac and cheese tasted like hospital food or like a frozen lean cuisine type of meal. It wasn't great by any means.
On the other hand, the artichokes were delicious! You get a whole artichoke for 5 bucks grilled with a sauce on the side. The sauce kind of tasted too weird for an artichoke; I prefer a more traditional lemon butter type of sauce.
Everything looked amazing though. I saw them preparing some of the skewers which all looked fresh and delicious. The asparagus also looked amazing, but it comes with the same type of sauce as the artichoke.
I definitely will be back because I love artichokes, but I would definitely not get the mac and cheese again! -
Review from Krista N.
I honestly have no idea why this place hasn't gotten better reviews. I've ate here a handful of times and never have had a bad experience.
I've tried the ahi tuna mango lemon skewer. The lemon was powerful but with the contrast of the mango sauce that it accompanied, it balanced perfectly. I've had a thai-bbq skewer which tasted more like just a bbq skewer but it was good anyways. I have also had the blackened shrimp skewer which could have used another shrimp but was still good. The skewers always have a good amount of broccoli, peppers and onions and the portions are the perfect size. You can chose to get one or two skewers, I always just get one because the mash potatoes fill me up.
I always get the mashed potatoes as my side- THEY ARE SO GOOD! The plate also comes with a caribean style slaw which is always tasty too. -

There isn't too many options on Haight Street if you're in the mood for some healthy food. Luckily we have Askew. Delicious skewers, a decent beer selection and great sides for a fair price. After visiting this establishment several times I can confirm that the quality is consistent and the service is always friendly.

my Texan boyfriend says its the best rack of ribs he's had since Goode Company BBQ. Being a Cali girl I always go for the veggie or seafood skewers but snatch a few ribs from the bf's order. I've never been disappointed. My favorite Asqew memory is eating clam chowder and mac'n'cheese in the polo fields at Outside Lands '09. How is it that healthy and comfort food both accurately describe the menu? Love it.
The 5th star was earned because of their awesome service (Haight St); one time I've walked in right at closing time and they happily turned the grill back on for me.
