Today I just couldn't decide on what to eat for lunch. I ended up here at Asqew Grill. When I walked in there were only a few folks ahead of me.

A quick glance at their menu board and my eyes quickly locked in on their Texas BBQ Chicken Skewer, served with one side or salad option. I went with the Coconut Cilantro Jasmine Rice for the side.

I placed the order and roughly ten minutes later my to-go was ready.

The chicken was tender, nicely charred and had good flavors along with the sweet delicious corn and red onions. The BBQ sauce was tangy, started off sweet then a surprise heat kicked it - perfect!
The jasmine rice was a nice compliment to the dish.

Dine-in or take-out, they offered barbecued ribs, burgers and more.
Good service plus one star.

Monday blues goodbye...

Yes, I have eaten here a few times. But, all that matters to me are the BBQ NACHOS.

Everything else was not memorable really, which I don't know if it was due to my possibly unhealthy love of the BBQ NACHOS or what.

I do remember my ex dropping leaving her wallet and coming back to find it intact and unrifled through which was nice. but even that, is nothing in comparison to the BBQ NACHOS.

BBQ NACHOS, omg, BBQ NACHOS, omg.

Seriously though, the skewers (Thai) I had were okay, but not worth writing home about. The burger I can remember was okay but not one I would get again. But, those damn BBQ NACHOS, omg!

Pretty cool spot. Ate here early on a Tuesday and found the Haight (and the restaurant) empty. The cashier recommended a few  of his favorites so we got the Texas BBQ Chicken and the Balsamic Beef. My only mistake was ordering two skewers (plus the mashed potatoes and a cup of soup) it just was way too much food at 12pm.

Thee soup was awesome (Clam Chowder) and served in a little mug with some bread - I was almost just content with that.

The skewers were delicious, lots of BBQ sauce with chicken, onions and corn on the cob.  I really enjoyed it and felt great for the next few hours. I would definitely return.

There's meat BBQ joints and then there's Asqew Grill!
There's lots of good BBQ joints in the city, but none of them really get the concept of a complete meal. I hate to say it but man cannot live on meat alone. Asquew has BBQ/grilling down AND the sides. Always fresh and tasty!  Everyone that works there is always super friendly and cool too!

Theres no better way to start your mid day off with Asqew Grill. For a low 10 dollars you can get 2 kebabs, small salad and a huge side dish.

This is the type of place where you hit a certain point knowing you're full but want another bite , then ask for a togo box and after they give it to you, you start convincing yourself its not even worth it to finish since theres only a couple bites left. Maybe its just me.

I recommend the santa fe chicken with cous cous rather than mashed potatoes, half chicken and Texas bbq.

Much enjoyed. My friend visiting from out of town went Christmas shopping with me in the Haight during an afternoon of spotty weather. The original plan was to go to Toronado and Rosamunde (which are lovely, btw) but the rain picked up again and we had worn ourselves out from walking. Enter Asqew.

Popped in mostly because we saw that they served beer, which was crucial. I had barely looked at the menu when I noticed that they have a Black and Bleu burger, otherwise known as deliciousness slathered with more deliciousness called gorgonzola. Holy shit... you guys know the way to my heart. The counter girl was very sweet, I enjoyed my Gordon Biersch marzen brew, and ultimately inhaled my burger.

I'll be back to try your seafood.

They deliver!  It is magic.  I actually ordered using GrubHub on my iphone.  Ah, technology.  I love the cilantro-lime chicken with the cilantro-lime rice.  Their rice is really amazing.  American rice tends to be really loose, and this one is kind of more like sticky rice.  Nothing better at the end of the day!

The only reason I'm sparing this place a one star review is because we got delivery and that might not reflect how good their food might be in house. The delivery didn't take long but was really cold and all of our food was tasteless and borderline charcoal. We ended up throwing away all $50 worth of our food and were suuuuper bummed :/ We were especially upset because we had heard great things about this place. Maybe we just caught them on a bad night.

I would give this business ZERO stars if I could but it is not an option on yelp... The reason? It was their complete dishonesty and lack of customer service ontheir part that left me brokenhearted and basically broke...
I met some friends there after a pretty huge shopping spree at American Apparel next door.. I wish to make a point though that I recommended the place to the out of towners, Ithought it would be a nice  cheap option for them with what I thought was some pretty good food in the Haight.
Anyway, back to what happened: I left Asqew in a hurry and totally forgot my bag with my $165.00 worth of purchases from American Apparel behind, and phoned immediately. The guy on the phone found the bag right away, told me it was safe and would hold it for me, I asked what time they closed and he said 10:00 pm, I said thank you, I'll be in ASAP. Long story short, I could not make it back to the haight until 2 days later and I asked about my bag of purchases being held for me and the guy said that it was no longer there. He was the same employee who over the phone had retrieved my bag and held it for me but said "sorry, i thought you said you were coming in that same night and I put it above the refrigerator and it looks like it has disappeared, the crew who does the cleaning is run by a different company altogether and one of them probably stole it".... HELLO? What kind of a place is this? First of all, place a customer's belongings in the office, or somewhere safe and make your management aware that  someone has left something valuable behind and make yourself and the business responsible if you claimed you would do that for them.... And whose to know if it really was the cleaning crew..... there were some damn cute things in that shopping bag...I am still so angry, and nearly $200 in the whole thanks to asqew.... Not even any form of compensation was offered to me. I then asked for the managers name and called for weeks, not being able to reach them and to be honest, they JUST DIDN'T CARE.
I want to mention that i may be an idiot for leaving the bag behind, but I must say that i have spaced in the same way before in MULTIPLE establishments, and I mean that I've left behind sunglasses, credit cards, jackets, shopping bags and have always found that the businesses integrity has been upheld by making sure that their belongings return to their loyal customers.... Not at asqew, they frankly didn't give a damn.... NOT COOL ASQEW!!!!!!!!!!!... rhymes with eeeeeew..

So apparently yelp doesn't let you do more than one update of a place (which is probably a good thing), so I'm just gonna edit my previous review.

After writing an update last night on this place where I talked about the slow delivery and the fact that I received the wrong order I got a message today from an employee at Asqew to apologize for the situation and they are sending me a card for a free meal. I thought this was an AWESOME gesture on the employee's part not only because of the free meal, but mostly because it shows that Asqew actually cares about what there patrons have to say about there establishment and they use this site to find ways to improve there business.

I also had to apologize to the employee who sent me the message as well because apparently I have been reviewing the wrong location!!! I've only gotten delivery from Asqew, which apparently is done only at the Marina location. Since my roommate always does the ordering and the Haight location is closer to our house this is where I always thought our food was coming from.

I'm definitely on board with ordering this place again, and like I mentioned in my original update I unexpectedly found a meal here a really like (the Thai BBQ).

I left my original two-star update below in case anyone wanted to check it out:

Alright...the fact that I'm about to bump this place down to two stars and not one is EXTREMELY kind of me. So, when I wrote my original review it had actually been a few months since I ate here, and after ordering here tonight I remembered another thing I don't like about this place. SLOW ASS DELIVERY!!!

It took 70 minutes tonight (I actually think last time it took longer and they took something off our bill) to get our food!!! On top of that, they gave me the completely wrong order!!! To be honest though what they gave me was actually pretty good (I think it was the Thai BBQ).

I think I'm done with this place...

[Green Zebra Coupon: Free side with purchase of skewer meal]

Just so you know, all the skewers taste like they are made days in advance and the stored in a freezer. The shrimp had absolutely no flavor and the fish that I had a second time had OK sauce -- and that's it. They get the second star for yummy mashed potatoes.

Just get a side on the go and skip the skewed part of Asqew.

I really liked this place.  I ordered a single blackened prawn skewer that was served over coleslaw and rice.  Then also ordered the grilled artichokes, they were to DIE for, and corn on the cob served with BBQ sauce, also quite tasty.
The BF had a Thai chicken skewer and a BBQ chicken skewer with garlic mashed potatoes.  All three skewers also included and variety of veggies as well as the protein.
Everything had tons of flavor and we were stuffed and happy when we left.

Everyone says its a sign that you're getting old when you start to see all your favorite places change for the worse. If that's the case, I must be REAL old because I remember when Askew was a lot better. Now, they've gotten rid of two of my favorite things on the menu: marscarpone polenta (i used to go there JUST for this) & their berry, tropical & citrus "quenchers." Where did those items go?

Another thing that used to be better was their care in preparing food. I haven't been here in a hot minute, but the last time I went, the chicken was a little undercooked. Also, the corn is a little hit & miss. Sometimes it's soggy, sometimes it's hard, sometimes its fine...

Enough bitchin'. The things I still really enjoy there are:
- artichoke halves appetizer- always tender & well cooked & came with a delicious aioli
- texas BBQ chicken- BBQ is tangy & has a great kick to it. love the combination of red onions & chicken
- thai beef- my bf's skewer of choice & is usually a hit because it's spiced really well
- prices are decent for the amount of food you get

Good, but something was missing...

My first encounter with Asqew Grill was not as a proper diner, but as an inebriated patron from neighboring Hobson's Choice on New Years Eve '08. Food for the bar is provided by Asqew, but for whatever reason that particular evening you had to go OVER to the restaurant to pickup the food. We ate nachos which -- at the time -- were some of the best barfood nachos I had ever eaten.

Fast forward to last night and, sadly, I just can't report the same magic. We ate in the restaurant this go-round, which turns out not to have the food options available in the bar, making me think that the two establishments simply share a kitchen, but are otherwise totally distinct. An usual relationship to be certain, but perhaps common in The City? The food is mostly skewer-based, and Diner-in-Crime had a tasty shrimp skewer with coconut-milk flavored rice. I ended up with the baby-back ribs, which were well prepared, though could have used more sauce and thus were a little dry.

The mashed potatoes were distinctive but excellent. Places like this often serve very "airy" potatoes, the result of over-whipping, which suffer from a lack of heartiness. These potatoes were airy, yet somehow they managed to retain substance that ensured overall deliciousness. I can't say I'd go back, but if I did, I would absolutely get more potatoes.

Healthy food and beer. What more could you want !
The place is a little on the small side.
But it only adds to it's charm. And it's Haight street.
I like everything that I have tried.
I enjoy the scallops. And anything chicken.
The service is as fast as you could expect and they are nice.
Get a frequent skewer card after 10 meals the next one is on them :)

I am a huge fan of artichokes and this place will deliver them, cooked, with a really nice miso-soy infused butter dipping sauce, to my doorstep. The cilantro-lime chicken skewers and the rice they come with are good too. I am not generally a huge fan of chain restaurants but this is really yummy. The dining room is not plush or elegant and not a place I would want to hang out for a long time. More of a place to get a quick meal or a delivery.

The macaroni and cheese was pretty bomb, but the garlic mashed potatoes were relatively bland, and when I asked for butter, I was given a sauce that was more au jus than melted butter. Uh, fail.

The skewers looked good though, and there were (if I remember correctly) three types of vegetarian ones to choose from, not to mention the other variety of meats available. The appetizers looked good as well - very comfort food-y.

My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant for the first time last weekend and  will definitely be going back.  The staff was super friendly and the food was delicious.  He got a Southwestern Salad with Santa Fe Chicken and I got one of their new BBQ Burgers with Garlic Mashed Potatoes.  Admittedly, the mashed potatoes were nothing special, but the burger was so good that I didn't even bother to use the additional bbq sauce they'd given me on the side.  My boyfriend was just as pleased with his meal and both of us were tempted to eat there again the following day.  (In fact, I think the only reason we didn't is because it takes two buses to get there from our place.)  Photos of both of our meals can be seen in the photo section above.

Since it's been addressed in other reviews, I would like to mention that the restaurant was extremely clean.  Even the bathroom, though the walls were covered in graffiti, was CLEAN and well-stocked.

YUM-O is what comes to mind to this place.  The place is a great healthy place for grilled skewers of a great variety of different meats and veggies.  I have fallen in love with there cilantro lime chicken skewers that sits on top of coconut rice.  It's AWESOME!!

The places has a nostalgic feel to it, from the pictures they have up and the cute wood (picnic style) tables.  The service is great...personal and friendly.  A perfect place to eat after some shopping on Haight Street.

Take a number and sit kinda restaurant. Ambiance is almost like a cafe but with real food.

If you're a big meat eater and you're into saving money, this place is for you! Very cheap and huge portions. They sure do grill it too and the meat is charred and crispy on the outside. I had the lemon chicken and it was great. Came with mashed potatoes. They're not big on veggies here and no, they don't sell hamburgers!

PS- Check out the grafitti on the bathroom walls!

Don't order the burger, or anything else.

Visit 1:
Burger is lost in a rush and a shift change and sits on grill for 40 minutes burning to a crisp, despite my repeated requests to take it off. Finally after a full hour I am given an only somewhat burnt burger, with a snarky remark from the waitress. Cooks, cashier obviously hate working there and should probably get out of the food business.

Visit 2:
Ordered from nearby Hobson's Choice bar where there food is offered. It simply never came, and I was there quite a while! The nice Hobson's manager was really unhappy and offered to give us free drinks.

I don't think I'll give Asqew a third try.

The food doesn't disappoint, but you definitely pay for every bite. One skewer and one side will run $12+. If you want a drink or anything else, you'll leave wondering how you spent so much money at such a low-key place.

Overall, it's a safe go-to if you're prepared to spend double what you would for the same amount/quality of food in the Richmond or Sunset.

Back when I ate meat, I used to get the Texas BBQ chicken skewers here. MMMMM...delicious!!! I am a sucker for grilled corn though, so maybe I'm biased.

Seriously though, I like that the food here is generally very healthy. They have veggies on all of the skewers and the salads are great as well. I can easily eat here and still honor my Weight Watchers promises!

Since becoming a vegetarian, I have not eaten here although I would love to try the portabella mushroom skewer for sure!

I love Asqew Grill.

When I first moved to SF a couple years ago one of the first things I did on my own was venture off the The Haight.  While stumbling around my new home I became quite famished.  And Asqew seemed right up my alley.  They have delish skewers.  And I love their jasmine coconut rice.  And They actually have a bomb ceasar salad.  I ordered the appetizer artichoke hearts and was not too impressed.  But I really love sitting at the table right in front of the window and stuffng my face as all the looky loos walk by and shudder in disgust.

You gotta love this city.

So walking down haight we get hungry and decide to head into this bbq joint - unfortunately we didn't get a psychedelic food experience, instead this joint was laced with dirty dishes on tables and average food. Next time someone suggests going here I think I'll just say no.

3 stars for the food, the BBQ was good and had moist, tender meat but the grilled corn was soggy. How do you make grilled corn soggy? The mac and cheese tasted like it was made with velveeta and shouldn't be eaten by anyone over the age of 5. And the prices aren't even that cheap.

1 star for cleanliness the tables had dirty dishes on them and the waitstaff seemed over worked.

1 star for sending two out of three of us running for the bathroom a few hours later.

I reaaaaallllllyyyyy like the food here. Love that couscous and the broc on the skewers is ALWAYS my favorite. If I could get a broc only kabob, you know id be doin it.

Asqew catered my friends wedding a couple  years ago and it was fabulous!! Something for everyone, carnivorous, veggie, or vegan, everyone was happy. Awesome idea for a catered event, casual and toasty.

Service can get dicey, but you know, its haight street. Everything/one is filthy.

I was here on a Monday for lunch.  Took the day off an was walkin round the haight with a friend of mine.  We stopped and had lunch here.  It was a nice place with decent food.  I wouldnt say it was the best bbq or really awesome, but it was a good meal.

I split a half rack of bbq ribs, which came with mashed potatoes, and we also ordered a side of mac n cheese.  I like mac and cheese and we got a huge plate, it wasnt great mac and cheese, it was pretty ordiary, but it was still good.  The ribs were not amazing, but good as well.  Basically I think this is a decent place to eat, one where you'll get a good meal, but can't expect a bbq experience or anything like that.  The mashed potatoes suprisingly were not that bad, they look terrible because they are a bit soupy, but actually dont taste too bad.

So all in all this is a good place to get a meal.

I'm a meat and potatoes girl. Unless absolutely necessary, screw veggies.

This culinary inclination is heightened when intoxicated, and so although the game plan after Bay to Breakers was to wander further down Haight, my buddies and I stumbled in and stayed put at Asqew.

Maybe it was the vodka or maybe it was the tequila, but the thai chicken skewer with a side of garlic mashed potatoes was AWESOME. They just plopped the stick in the middle of the potatoes...I like that. Let's not fuck around and pretend that this place is any better than it actually is. The blend of sweet and salty left me licking my plate. What, you think I'm always a model diner? When it comes to getting between me and drunken munchies, LAY OFF ME I'M STARVING.

I also had some couscous and a bite or two of my friend's cajun skewer. Both were decent, but made me happier that I had chosen the better dish.

There would be more stars had it not been for the fact that they LOST the order of one of my buddies, making us wait an additional 20 minutes for her food. To all the salivating drunk people hovering over us, don't hate, it wasn't our fault we were at our table for more than an hour. And to the random UCSD married dude who we shared our table with, your wife better not check your camera. Drunken voracious female eaters are so hot right now.

The first time I ate at ASQEW is was average in 2001.I recently went back there May 2009 to hear people complaining about the service & food I think its under new ownership it was a different atmosphere. The food is average at best & very skimpy on the portions plus they were outta ingredients for mashed potato's which is in seven of their meals. The BBQ meal I got for 7 dollars sucked three pieces of chicken fucking ridiculous...... I'm never eating there again & I wouldn't waste ur money trying it either!!!!
