What a Gem! Asilomar State Beach has it all. Great views, great air, and outstanding tidepools if your a semi nature freak like myself.
Seriously California has so many great places to visit. I was reminded of this when my cousin who is from Nevada, visited me last week, and we took a ride here to clear our minds. She made it very clear nothing this pretty and refreshing exist where she currently habitates.
Give it try and remember to pick up your dog poop!
Great beach, great memories of playing with my children, even now

Tide pools are great.
Good for the soul.
Got into a pissing contest with a 120 lb Bull Mastiff today.
The "beef"? " Frog" took my frisbee from me. So I found a stick and ran with it. I thought about thumping him with it. If only I had arms!
Stay tuned for tomorrows installment.

After an insanely awesome time with the Skip Barber Racing School and the Laguna Seca racetrack, we headed here to let the adrenaline settle down a bit.
Asilomar was the much needed Yang to Laguna Seca's Yin.
This is the finest sand I've ever felt in California. It was like walking on sugar. The water is so clear and inviting, unlike the shnasty crap you find in the San Francisco bay. My dog, who stays far away from the SF Bay water, was splashing around in Asilomar's water.
Across the road there's a boardwalk that leads to a building with restrooms, pool tables, chairs, etc...
Definitely one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to.

It is beautiful!
No matter the weather, this is a beautiful beach!
Did I mention that it is beautiful?
I love the rock stacking, the sand between my toes, the waves crashing in, the walking bridge, the ships that pass by, the tide pools, watching the surfing, and the list goes on...
Oh, and it is beautiful!

One of my favorite beaches to visit. The scenery is awesome and it's never really overly crowded. It does get pretty windy here, but what beach isn't. You can bring your dog here, the sign says dogs must be on leash but most people let their dog run loose (as long as your responsible).
The parking is pretty decent but watch out for bicyclist when you open your car door.
Not a very good place to surf, especially if you're just learning (dangerous).
The vistas here are pure eye candy.
Lucked out and visited on a clear, sunny, breezy day. The waves and rocks look so beautiful. I was just disappointed so much of the park was closed off as "dangerous." Trails were blocked. Bring a blanket. Sit. And try not to cry. It's that gorgeous.
Boardwalks across creeks full of life.
Sand dunes so white you can see clearly at night.
Tide pools.
Reefs.
Surf.
Amazing plants and animals.
Sailing ships passing by.

Me Too!
I lived in the Monterey Bay area my whole childhood. What a wonderful place.
All these years later and after traveling the globe, the only place comparable in my mind are some of the views you get in Oahu or Maui. This place is Beautiful with a capitol B.
If you don't like it, you just don't like nature.
The sand is as white and rich as the touristy WASPs who play here. Great fine grain white sand that feels like it has been flown in from the beaches of southern Italy.
No open fire pits (aka bon fires)
Dogs without a leash are okay if they are in your control. Though, I did see one unfortunate incident involving a distracted child and a dog with indigestion.
Honestly, I find the Seaside/Marina beaches less crowded with tourists which allows me to commune with nature with less interference. Also, the Asilomar/Carmel beaches don't have any 'treasures,' e.g., beer bottle ocean glass, or dead marine carcasses, or wayward buoys, etc. that you might normally find on other beaches.
The beach is basically a not so private beach for the Asilomar Conference Grounds and in that it's very convenient if you happen to be staying there. Otherwise, I wouldn't drive out of my way to get here.

This is one of the greatest hidden beaches that I have ever seen. My Mom is a school teacher who stayed at the Asilomar center for years and knew all about this little gem.
You just park at Asilomar, walk across the street and you find this thin, long seaweed filled beach with walkways and rocks and creatures everywhere. The sand is so white and beautiful you hate to walk on it. Come, walk and listen to the waves, look at the once-in-the-world surf and smell the sea.
It simply can't be beat anywhere.
It is a pretty crowded beach with RV's, campers, hotel stayers, dogs and kids. And it all works. After all, everyone should be able to experience this public beach. Go will ya' Turn off your TV, get off the couch and make a trip of it.

This place is a little piece of heaven. I come here annually for business and it is soooo relaxing even when you are working. The best time of year is fall; October and it is simply beautiful. The air is crisp and fresh and the view is incredible! I am an avid runner and I actually wake up at 6:30am and run on the beach: REALLY! It is the best workout then my usually treadmill, it truly is a refuge by the sea. They even have buses that will take you into Monterrey and back if you want to eat or drink out.

This beach is perfect. I participated in a beach clean up here a few weeks ago and the weather was amazing. A young sea lion was sick on the beach and the locals were very respectful of its space. I called Marine Rescue and they were out and saving the thing in less than 30 minutes!
Beach was clean (I helped!) and stunning. A wonderful place.
This beach is wonderful and I've been lucky enough to live really close to it for the past two years. We ride our bikes to spend an afternoon at the beach and sometimes just drive past it because the waves are so ridiculous.
However, the best part of Asilomar State Beach for dog owners is just past Asilomar State Beach. Let me explain: there is a small creek thingamabob that flows into the ocean. Once you cross this magical line of demarcation, you can let your well-behaved dogs off leash. Make sure you cross the creek...many people let their dogs off leash while still on the State Beach property, but, at least according to a kind stranger who warned me....you don't want to be "that guy" who gets the big honking ticket.
Our previously reliably excellent off leash dogs were able to experience the freedom & power of the mighty ocean a few times until that fateful day when Sammy the Wolf Dog met the Seagull from Hell. After he ran over 2 children, 5 sunbathers, 3 other dogs and 1 senior citizen, he was finally tired enough for my husband to run into the ocean and catch him before he found his second wind. I was busy holding onto our golden and catching up to our senior dog who decided this was a good time to just start walking home without telling anyone...and laughing...so I was useless in trying to catch Sammy. He really looks like a wolf and he's huge, so no one else at the beach really wanted to help, either. They were mostly picking up their children & snacks (that's what we call the little dogs who'd be gone in one bite...).
After a few apologies & some minor cussing because my husband's cell phone was not ocean proof, 4 out of 5 of us went home happy.

One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to in my entire life, the entire world over.
Period.
This beach has so much natural, captivating beauty and serenity. I've been coming here since I was little, and it never gets old. It's a good beach to go to and simply enjoy the tranquil waves in an unsullied atmosphere.
As others have said, it's almost never crowded, and it is very clean.
I'll gladly continue to return.

Wow, this may very well be the most amazing running trail that I have experienced. I stayed at the Asilomar Conference Center so that was my starting point. The trail was a little hard to find at first and the first bit of it I had to run along the Sunset Drive where cars were driving by, but about 0.1 miles in, the trail was established and boy oh boy - it was brilliant! It was like running on top of the ocean. The beach and the sand were just a few stairs away. The trail passes sandy beach coves one after another. I kept thinking, "I wish I had a camera!"
If you start at the Asilomar Center, it is one mile until you reach Lighthouse Ave so it is 2 miles round trip. At the 1-mile point there is this wooden gazebo lookout point thingie - a great place for stretches, push-ups, and tricep dips as you watch the ocean waves crashing below. The trail itself is a very well maintained dirt trail and relatively flat; very slight ups and downs.
You MUST MUST MUST MUST come run here if you are ever in the area. Truly one of my favorite runs now in the world. Remember to stretch afterwards on the sandy beach and turn off that iPod and listen to the waves crash on the rocks.
It's no surprise that the name is Spanish for "refuge by the sea" -- go to the parks website for more information:

Stunning sunsets and wave sets to die for...there are a few rules you should remember:
1. never turn your back on the water
2. there is a wicked (seriously) riptide in these parts -- so if there is a warning posted -- read it and follow its advice.
3. if you have a dog, please pick up after it
4. if you have a hankering to go tidepooling, please respect our precious marine habitat -- look but don't take it home with you!
5. stop, breathe in the freshest ocean air and allow yourself the chance to listen to the crash of the waves and feel the salt spray on your face....
gosh how I miss home...

A small stretch of the rocky Monterey Peninsula coastline that has a special place in my heart. We were married here.
It's an indredible beach...it's clean, has big waves and amazing views! One of the very best places to catch the sunset, go for a stroll, spend the day lounging around, or get married! Even before we were married here, I always felt incredibly happy on this beach. It just feels very California!

Quite beautiful this past weekend, when temperatures soared to near 70 degrees. I couldn't ask for a better way to reach the beach than by foot from a nearby lodge. There are two walkways along the beachfront, one near the entrance to Asilomar Lodge, the other a bit further north along the coast. You'll know when you see several cars randomly parked along the road. The Asilomar Lodge pathway is very, very short - and tricked me into thinking that this is it?!
Yes, one of the great beaches. Make a point to come here during a major storm- the waves crashing on the rocks are incredible! Just stay in your car or in the gazebo and don't go near the beach or rocks. And keep your ears covered!

I didn't really even know this beach existed until I was here for a wedding last weekend. It was beautiful! Only reason it's not five stars is because there were flies that kept buzzing by our faces as we sat for the ceremony. I think they only came up because some kids were playing with lumps of drying seaweed on the beach, but still, it was pretty gross. Other than that though, this was a gorgeous location for a barefoot beach wedding, and it didn't hurt that it was actually warm out too!

nice beach. great place to take your dog. but little too crowded and hard to find parking during peak hours.
This is a great stretch of beach that has fun tidepools with sea anemones, lots and lots of hermit crabs, and other little sea creatures. The water is beautiful, and the beach isn't swarming with people. We even made friends with a goose that was just hanging out!

One of my favorite beaches. I stolled through the other day and forgot how close it is to Spanish Bay. Checked out some hottie golfers on the way to the white sand.

beautiful, stunning views and different wave patterns on the water than you see in the bay itself. Very vehicle friendly with quite a few turnouts to stop. Parking is not allowed between certain hours in the late night and morning. Hint: If you want to have a campfire, it is forbidden at Asilomar. Make sure you are on the Pebble Beach side (which is south of Asilomar)because apparently, Pebble Beach could care less.

Located smack on the Monterey Coast. Great place to do beach walking and strolling. It is a rocky coastline with many nooks and tidepools. Great place to walk hand in hand with your sweetie. Breathtaking sunsets.

Super long stretch of beautiful dramatic coastline. Love the tidepools full of hermit crabs & sea anemones... Walked around forever & explored. Surprisingly desolate....unlike "Lover's Point." I SUPER LOVED THIS BEACH.

Incredibly clean, flat expanses of fine white sand, lots of anemone, birds, doesn't seem too crowded even on weekends.
