5 reviews for Asian Grill
Definitely like this place. We came here to celebrate a birthday for a pair of twins that I know and the good service started there.
My wife and I showed up first and we were greeted warmly and then shown the table. The lady started breaking into a bunch of Chinese when I said thank you in Mandarin and I quickly had to tell her that we were Korean so she would switch back to English. Lesson #1 - I need to learn more Korean than 'hello,' 'goodbye,' 'yes,' 'no,' 'thank you,' and 'I'm Korean.'
The food was good too - I liked the orange beef and pork fried rice. If I had to get critical, it would be the hot and sour soup and the crab rangoons. The soup wasn't hot and the rangoons had a weird filling inside that I couldn't describe as melted cream cheese like I'm used to. But they were still palatable.
After dinner, the gentleman that I guess is the owner was very entertaining. Besides giving my friends a pair of Kirin dolls as birthday presents, he brought out a set of what looked like kewpie dolls on a dish. We watched in a dumbfounded stare as the dolls sang happy birthday followed by him pouring hot water on the dolls. The dolls...then...peed on us. Yes, peed. We were shocked but apparently they were toy soaked in cold water that shot the water out when the hot water caused it to expand. Utter hilarity ensued for about 20 minutes following that.
Great experience - but the restaurant is a tad far for me and The Wife to make a frequent trek out here unless we're going to meet up with our friends in Fairfax.
I love this place. It's the best Chinese Food in the DC area, IMO, which is a crazy claim but I'd stand by it. They use all white meat chicken, for starters, and all the food actually tastes clean and fresh. It isn't like the Hunan's Hunan Hunan down the road in that grungy strip mall.
The owner of this place owns Ho's Dynasty in Burke and obviously learned from a lot of the mistakes of that place. Instead of being another generic numbered-dish Chinese carry out depot, this place is actually a robust pan-Asian restaurant that specialized in their Chinese food.
Don't believe me? Had dinner on Christmas Eve from this place with five people who live in DC and they were all blown away at how good this little restaurant in Springfield was. They even talked about making the drive out to the 'burbs just to get some more of it. When you're willing to drive 20-30 minutes to get carryout, you're doing something right.
A remodled version of it's former self. For those that might remember, it was called Fantasy Garden. It used to have a pretty typical Chinese resturant interior. Now, they've revamped and made the place look a bit more upscale. Not in a bad way either.
It had been almost a year since we had gone. (My now removed gall bladder made eating chinese a bit hard) I so badly wanted their Schezuan chicken. Not surprising at all, the hostess remembered who we were. It seems she can remember everyone. She sat us down and the cutest and friendliest waitress came over to us. She joked with us about everything. Even gave us little plastic animals for our soda. The portions were huge as always. We ate, drank and were merry. They asked us if we wanted dessert, but we were very full and declined gracefully. They brought us a small dessert anyway (on the house too!)
I always recommend them when someone asks about good chinese food. The crispy chicken is so good. The staff is so kind. The place is very unassuming. And, it can be very packed on a weeknight. Those that have been here for a while know it's a welcome place to visit.
I do wish they would put their Koi in a better setting, but that's ok.
My family (mom, dad, sister and her 2 boys) and I came here last night for Mother's Day dinner. It was fairly packed. My dad called ahead and made "reservations" so we had no trouble being seated. The location is hidden away in the corner of a small shopping center. I would have never thought to come eat here if my dad hadn't read something about it in the local newspaper.
The decor was so red. I felt like it was Lunar New Year in there all year round, with the koi fish and dragon art work to the red firecrackers hanging from the ceilings. It was cute, but I just can't forget the RED.
It's called "Asian Grill" when it really should be called "Chinese Grill". 95 percent of the menu is all Chinese cuisine. The drink menu consisted of only liquor and cocktails. We had to ask the waitress what they had to offer that wasn't alcoholic, so the soda selection was told to us verbally. They didn't have beer on the menu either, however, it was available. Between the 6 of us, we ordered: Steamed Ginger Lobster, Sesame Beef, General Tsos Chicken, Thai Basil Shrimp, Combination Fried Rice, and Steamed Veggies with brown sauce. There was nothing "Thai" about the Thai Basil Shrimp. It tasted like ordinary shrimp that was seasoned with a plentiful amount of basil. The rest of the entrees we ordered weren't plain but weren't so rich in flavor -- We all agreed that it was best suited for American taste. They went easy on the portion-size, unlike the rest of the Chinese places we've been to.. we thought we'd have plenty of left overs to take home, but ended our meal with empty plates. I liked that they had brown rice available by request; I ordered a cupful separately for myself for an extra dollar. We were given apple wonton as dessert, on the house. I thought this was a nice treat. It was very delicious and a great way to have people remember your restaurant.
The managers were very friendly and came by each table to make sure everyone was alright. It seemed like most of the people who were dining there were regulars because the managers knew them by name and face.
The tab came out to about 125, meaning 20 dollars a person. For the amount of food we got, we were totally surprised when we got the bill. I'm not a big fan of Chinese food to begin with so average Chinese food at a low price works for me. I would come again.
A very nice Chinese restaurant. The kung pao chicken is quite spicy and we really enjoyed the dessert, a deep fried apple won ton (which was gratis). Not inexpensive, but it won't break the bank. Back in the Fantasy Garden days (for whatever reason that's where I ended up proposing to my wife) I remember a much larger restaurant with an extensive lunch buffet. I think they've reduced the size of the restaurant and seemingly concentrated on improving the food quite a bit. Service was friendly and attentive. But where are the chop sticks?? I agree with Wendy on the Koi, they need a better home.
