I came here once a while ago for a lunch buffet and recently came back. Dinner comes in a la carte or thali. A la carte comes with rice and naan. Thali comes with dal, sambar, raita, rice, Naan and a dessert.
SO MUCH FOOD! The waiter also accidentally brought us an appetizer that we didn't order, but instead of takign it back they just told us we could have it free of charge. -
Review from Sarah S.
I love this place, it might be the one restaurant I miss the most in Michigan! I went here for my birthday 5 years in a row, that's how much I loved it.
It's lovely inside, very classy. The service is always so nice, and the food is beyond amazing!
Mango shakes are a must try (lassis are good, but tart for my taste).
I always order the chana misala (chick peas in a brown/red gravy). My mom's favorite is alou gobi (potatoes and cauliflower in a brown gravy).
I have had both dishes at many Indian restaurants but Ashoka is a cut above.
If you love Indian food you will love this place!
Also on some nights they have a buffet, very good but never has chana masala, and rarely has alou gobi. So order from the menu if you prefer these dishes. -

I am generally not a big fan of buffets, but the sizzling tandoori and fresh naan that comes with the buffet makes it worth it. Big win!

What we eat (2 trips): Appetizer: Samosas. Main Course: Biriyani, Malai Kofta, Masala Dosas
What we liked:The food was great. The spices used seem authentic and tasted great. The food that we ordered had the right spice levels as we ordered. When ordered high, they were spicy and when we ordered low because of kids, it was low enough for the kids to enjoy
What we disliked: Service is poor. On top of it, the waiter and the hosts are rude and have a very condensating behavior. The food during the second trip took over 45 mins and it was on a light traffic evening. When enquired, the waiter shocked us with his rude response. The quality of food was forgotten over the waiter's apathy.
Verdict: Good food but we will never go there again. -
Review from Jonny P.
Ventured out for the buffet last weekend. This would be a great 'starter' restaurant for someone new to Indian, the food is not excessively spicy.
Also a good vegetarian option. I was not particularly impressed with anything and the chicken briyani was a bit dry and very 'boney'.
The service was good, the highlight of the afternoon was the Tandoori Chicken. Not a bad option if you're in the area or looking to sample dishes for the first time. -

It's kind of sad that this is the best Indian restaurant in Metro Detroit area. I was expecting something phenomenal, but I was disappointed.
We got the "ASSORTED APPETIZER" first. It includes Samosa, chili Pakora , Vegetable Pakora deep fried. They were OK, not colse to what you've expect from the best indian restaurant in the area. For our entree, we ordered "MASALA DOSA" and "NAVARATHAN KOORMA". The Dosa was slightly better than the horrible tasteless NAVARATHAN KOORMA.
Go there without holding high anticipations, it's just spicy food with indian spices. The naan, on the other hand, was breathtaking. Hence the two stars.
Bottom line, if you have tried before a decent indian food, you would be disappointed here. However, if you haven't, you would probably enjoy this. -

Cannot understand the four star average this place maintains, it was incredibly disappointing. The filling in the samosas was too dry, and tasted mostly of salt, my entree (hyderabadi chicken) was indistinguishable from my boyfriend's (chicken madrasi) and both tasted generic, like something from the ethnic foods isle at Meijer. Nothing that came to the table seemed fresh, these dishes could taste exactly the same in January.
Service wasn't welcoming, but they were efficient. My water glass was refilled at least six times over the course of the meal.
It's tempting to make an excuse because I've only eaten here once. Maybe I just ordered from the wrong part of the menu, maybe hyderabadi and madrasi chicken are *supposed* to be incredibly similar. On the other hand, given the incredible range of flavors I experienced at Rangoli in Auburn Hills, I'm not going to waste money giving Ashoka a second chance. -
Review from Ryan S.
St Clair, MI
Disappointment in almost every category. Dishes were very soupy and generically spiced. My entree came out nothing close to the way the waiter or the menu described it. Host was borderline rude and the bathroom was pretty dirty. The naan was good and was probably the only positive thing about the experience.
I generally don't like to review too harshly here on Yelp but having gone to Rangoli only weeks before this place I just couldn't help but notice the glaring difference. Rangoli thrilled me in almost every way. Ashoka on the other hand just felt largely like a waste of time and money. Definite room for improvement. -
Review from Kaye P.
This place isn't as awful as some people are making it out to be, but it's not good. I've been here a number of times over the years bc I grew up in MI and my meals have ALWAYS ranged btwn 1-3 stars.
Also, I should note that I like to believe I am an Indian food expert (at least for vegetarians) bc growing up it was usually my ONLY vegetarian option and I did live in India and took full advantage of my food situation completely.
Ok, so the service isn't as bad as people are making it out to be, they're prompt and efficient, albeit not so friendly.
They didn't mess up on the papad - which it's impossible to anyways - so that's good. The naan was a little more crisp than I liked - made me think they don't put much care into it, but at least it was served HOT.
The saag paneer was meh, I've made better saag paneer while living in a crappy college apartment.
The mutter paneer is actually pretty good - if you're a vegetarian and going here this is what I'd recommend.
The Gulab Jamun are wonderfully over sweet - just how I like it - the only thing I enjoyed eating other than the aachar.
I don't remember anything else being particularly memorable.
Everytime I've ordered the chai it's been a bit watery for my taste - so I wouldn't bother spending the money here just go to starbucks if you're not making it at home! Totally sticking to desi food done by my parents kitchen or my mom's girlfriend's kitchens when in MI as of now! -

So, moved to Michigan from the UK and have been here for 6 weeks.
The craving for an Indian dinner was too strong.
This restaurant came onto the radar to try.
Well, living within 30 minutes travel of London, which has one of if not the best Indian restaurant street in the UK, the Asoka had a lot to live up to.
All I am going to say is...NEVER AGAIN.
The food was bland, boring and pathetic.
The Chicken Tikka Masalla = disgusting.
Cubed chicken ( perfect cubes, how?) in Oxtail soup, it was awful.
Was nothing like a masalla.
Plain boring rice.
I certainly will not be visiting again. -

Nice family style restaurant - nothing fancy but good traditional Indian food. Would come again if I was in the mood for Indian.

I love love love the fresh naan! Enough said. :D Also they give you a sizzling plate of chicken--fresh out of the kitchen.
The food is pretty good and the restaurant is clean. Overall, this is a pretty good bet for indian food. -

Dear Ashoka,
I know it's tacky to not do this face-to-face, but I'm breaking up with you.
We've just gone separate ways as of late, each taking our own directions in life. Our paths weren't crossing, nor were they even parallel to one another anymore. Our relationship was never going to work out in the long run, so I'd rather we break up now, before things get too serious and the L-word starts getting thrown around.
Over the past few months, I've learned that South Indian is the kind of Indian cuisine I like. I was heading full-speed down a road of fiery spices, hot oil, and dancing dosas. I often found myself at someone else's place, bathing in rasam or sleeping on a soft uttapam. You, on the other hand, were content with pedaling down a circuitous path encircling a handful of uninspiring North Indian dishes. You were happy serving the midwestern palate with your greasy naan, runny raita, and flavorless palak paneer.
Every time I asked you to spice up our love life, you never came through. I always wanted some heat in our intimacy, but you could never take our relationship to that next level.
And when it came to idli, you knew that if I ever tasted it elsewhere, you'd lose me forever. So you purposely made your idli dry, hard, and dense, so that I wouldn't like them and wouldn't even bother trying them elsewhere. But the joke's on you--I found someone else who can give me the idli you can't.
Maybe if you kill the blandness and monotony about your food, I'd be willing to give you another chance. But I just can't be with you if you're catering to the meat-and-potatoes middle manager, who, through his mustachioed grin, asks, "Can I have the chicken tee-kaah?" in the slow, deliberate manner of speech one uses when talking at a child or someone they think doesn't understand English. When your food gets too spicy and authentic for that guy, give me a call again.
I'm sorry, Ashoka. I really thought I was falling for you. But you just weren't giving me what I needed any more. You were my first romance in metro Detroit's Indian food scene, but I think it's time we each move on. I've found someone who can satisfy my yearnings for South Indian spice, and I know you've found many loyal fans who adore your very pedestrian palak paneer.
xoxo,

True story.
So my tastebuds and I, we were hanging out the other day, chillin', running errands, doing our thing, when all of a sudden -- visions of naan came dancing into my head. The tastebuds careened into overdrive, and I could quickly feel them planning a revolt against the lower-carb dinner I had waiting at home.
What to do... what to do?
Head to Ashoka, of course. For the best Indian food I've had--and I've sampled many such places (from Cambridge to Chicago to San Fran). Food was fresh. Spice levels were right-on. Plenty of chutney, pickles and chilis on the side. An abundance of bliss.
I highly recommend ordering the thali: a revolving tray of deliciousness, featuring your chosen entree + curry, dal, sambar, raita, kheer and naan. My 'buds were still high-fiving hours later.... -
Review from Dea A.
I nearly had a mental breakdown at the complete neglect of my dinner table. One waiter, two bus boys, and the presumed manager of the night. One waiter for 12 tables. My head almost exploded.
I've been a patron of this place many many times. Never have I gotten even acceptable service unless I was doing frantic hand waving. I'm weak, my arms get tired after awhile. All I want is water and a check, is that so much to ask?
The food for the most part is good. I'm more of a fan of the meat dishes like the hydrabati lamb and the butter chicken than their vegetarian dishes. Their aloo gobi, mater paneer, and palak paneer just don't do it for me. It's rich, it has a crazy amount of ghee and cream in it (this kind of Indian food is NOT good for you), and it's satisfying. After you come out of Ashoka, you have to roll to your car. Food coma.
But it's pricey. And what am I paying for exactly? For the manager to scoff at me when trying to pay the bill so I can GTFO? To have an empty glass of water all night? There is no "thanks for coming, I hope you enjoyed your meal." No, instead, it's pay (if you can get the bill) and get out.
Ashoka, you're on probation in my book. Step it up or you're going to have white girl brains on the wall from my head exploding in frustration.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Only been here once so not a whole lot to say.
We've been going to Mayur a lot lately, which is probably my favorite indian restaurant right now, so my first time here at Ashoka i knew i was going to compare them.
Service was decent, but nothing spectacular. The mood/decor was nice and comfortable.
My wife had the butter chicken. It was very good, comparable to Mayur. My wife said she like Mayur's a little better. I couldn't decide.
I had the chicken dopiaza. I thought it was excellent.
Naan was good but i think the naan at Mayur is awesome.
All and all, it was very good, and I can definitely see us coming here from time to time for a change of pace from Mayur. It's definitely more comfortable on the inside and there is at least one thing (the chicken dopiaza) that i like better at Ashoka. -

Review from Rodger W.
My daughter suggested that we go here on our way home from driving AMAZING Ford products at the Michigan Proving Grounds with professional driving coaches. But I digress....
One of her Hindu friends suggested the AP World History class go here as part of a field trip to a Hindu Temple. She raved about it and insisted we go here, especially for the Samosas and the Butter Chicken. I had recently read Janelle P's and dea a's less than glowing reviews, but was willing to give it a try. I am glad I did.
First of all, the service was pretty good. There was an older guy actively serving water and busing tables, and two fairly attentive waiters. There were about 7 tables occupied and about a dozen carry out customers.
The menu is mostly a predictable Bengali menu, but with some hidden gems. The Samosas were nearly as good as Tahoora Sweets in Chicago; by far the best in Detroit. They were not overly mirchi (chili pepper) laden, fluffy inside, crisp outside, and devoid of excess oil. The green chutney was very tasty and likely home made. However, the height of my meal was the Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani
I watched the massive pile of multicolored goodness emerge from the kitchen. Ashokas version is very much like biryani that is served in Indian Muslim homes like my wifes parents in Chicago. Full of Hyderabadi (South Indian) spiced tender deboned chicken, cardamom, and fluffy Basmati rice that have been slowly cooked in a blend of probably a dozen different spices and ghee. It was perhaps one of the very best restaraunt example of Hyderabadi biryani I have had in North America. Ghareeb Nawaz in Chicago is probably ever more authentic, but much less subtle and more greasy.
My daughter had the very tender butter chicken which was delicious with its dominant fresh ghee taste. It was as rich a dish as I have had since Tuesday (Mi Pueblo Guisado).
Even if everything else here sucks, I will be returning to sample the other biryanis very soon. Stay tuned for updates. -

We just tried Indian locally for the first time a few weeks ago at Mayur (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) so that is what I have to compare Ashoka to. The result? Each has their own pros and cons but overall I think they're both 4-star worthy...if you're not heavily into Indian food. I mean, I ordered Mild. That tells you something about my ordering preferences. :)
The service was decent--nothing to really complain about but nothing to rave about, either--so overall I give the edge to Mayur (where the waiter was much more personable). Our waters were refilled once, but another time (before we asked for boxes) would have been nice.
Keeping in mind my limited experience, I'd still say the food was really good--my main dish of Butter Chicken was almost divine (compared to my lamb dish at Mayur, which was a bit dry). And dipping the naan in the Butter Chicken Sauce was...oh my. Siiiiigh. Hubby said his Tandoori Chicken was good, and about the same as at Mayur.
We weren't trying to spend a big amount to use a coupon (like we were at Mayur) so we didn't try the same number of things...so not as much food to rate. But since what we did have was tasty, and the service was good, so four stars. We would certainly go back.Listed in: Troy Area A to Z Eating…

Yet another strip mall restaurant. Ashoka is a good Indian restaurant. Is it the best? I don't know - there are still few more I want to try. It has a nice atmosphere with a huge menu offering both northern and southern dishes. Full bar.
I have just returned from India. Authentic tastes still linger on my tongue. After sweating in ungodly heat the entire day, dinner would start with tea then move on to main dishes. The food was so spicy, fresh, and awesome. Couldn't wait to try the Michigan fare and surprisingly it wasn't too bad.
Saying that I have tasted Baigan Bartha and Bagara Baigan both thali and a la carte, both delicious. I have also tried some of their Indian-Chinese, again surprisingly good - although I would not order again. The Paneer dishes were average - not the fresh, huge chunks of cheese I remember in India. The naan was a little greasy for my taste.
Over all, good, not as spicy as I would like Indian food. Definitely a place I would go to regularly.Listed in: Delicious Dining in the D ....

Wonderful. This restaurant has completely changed my opinion about Indian Cuisine. This will be my new go to place for sure!
We got carry out on Saturday afternoon and it was delicious. The only complaint was completely out of the hands of the restaurant - what the heck is going on on Rochester Road! Holy cow! HUGE delays there.
Food - A++. We got a large sampling including: Butter Chicken - now one of my personal favorites, Fish Pakoras (the only thing I didn't really care for), Chicken Manchurian, Masala Dosa, Lamb Koorma, and Hydrabadi Chicken Biryani. So we did get a BUNCH of food.
Cost - Tab for all of that - and this was thali, not a la carte, came to $66. So good value in my opinion
Ambiance - seemed nice but we did get take out.
Service - waiter came to the counter immediately.
So they have a couple of brand new fans - and we will go back again and again! -

It's my favorite Indian restaurant in town. It's the place I'll take people when we want Indian.
I'm a huge fan of their lamb vindaloo, and a friend of mine claims they serve the best butter chicken she's ever had.
It's tucked into a little strip mall, which can be off-putting for some, but if you can get past that and focus on the food, it's an outstanding restaurant.Listed in: Things that are awesome

Yelp provides a good number of reviews for Ashoka & a very mixed bunch they are.We headed to the Buffet lunch, what did i enjoy, Well they served table side very Fresh naan bread, they also bring table side a sizzling platter of Fresh tandoori chicken, which they gladly replenished after we scarffed it all. I also liked the Paneer Lababda, Sadly the rest was pretty bland formulaic insipidly mild curries like Kemeer curry,Chicken Marsala & Some Daal dish, there were about another 5-6 dishes but none of them looked appetizing. The Decor is ok lah but the service is pretty good.Business in this area is being hit hard by the annual appearence of road work crews who apply silly putty to our roads, good until the first rainfall or Frost.
For this alone i am glad i came to spend my money at Ashoka -

Man, I wish we could do half stars. I would definitely give them a 3 1/2.
The thing I love most about Ashoka is the "Thali style". You can get most of the entrees a la carte (served with rice and naan) or, for $2 more, you can get it Thali style, which comes with a vegetable curry, dal, sambar, raita, rice, naan and a dessert (see photo). This would be a great way to introduce someone to Indian food, I think.
Ashoka's menu is ginormous. Seriously. An unbelievable amount of options and a vegetarian's dream. Indian is typically my go to cuisine when I've been eating what I consider too much meat and want to give my body a break from it. There are no less than 30 vegetarian options on the menu, though I can't guarantee they'll taste all that different.
I went with the Paneer Lababdar this time (Fresh Homemade cheese cubes cooked with tomatoes, onions, ginger and garlic) and it was really tasty. However, I have had their Navratan Koorman in the past and thought it was awful, so it can be a bit hit or miss.
Generous portions, great service and the atmosphere is pretty nice (very open, similar to Royal across the street), and I'll definitely be going back the next time I want Indian so I can make my way through some of their other vegetarian dishes. -
Review from Aman B.
Paid a recent visit for dinner at Ashoka and left with mixed feelings.
The service was good and the staff was efficient. However, the food was not the best that I have experienced.
Ordered:
Mutter Paneer - mild - There was a lot of paneer which I liked. Taste overall was good.
Chole Bhatura - this was REALLY good. I loved this the most and it was spicy (asked for mild but it still had a kick so be warned)
Saag Paneer - this was fairly good. I have had this dish at home since I was a child and although it was good, something was missing which I could not put my finger on. I ordered the "thali" which meant this dish came with a few smaller bowls of veg foods - sweet vermicelli, yogurt, sambar, and a small dish of chole (chick peas) - all these were NOT GOOD.
Naan - they were fresh and filling.
Maybe I have been spoiled in my travels or home cooking, but for the price, I did not truly feel satisfied in terms of getting food for the price I paid. The portions itself are huge and there was ample food left to take home for the next day.
I would return again at some point to try different items. -
Review from Iffat B.
The decor and service were both good. The food, however, was subpar.
I thought their concept of thali style entrees which comes with daal, vegetable curry, and dessert was very creative, but the main entrees just weren't that good. I tried both the butter chicken and the chicken tikka masala. The chicken tikka was dry. Seriously, how do you mess up chicken tikka masala?? it's a classic.
Overall, disappointed and will not return -

My favorite place for Indian food!!!
I have sampled many, many, many Indian restaurants, including their Canton location, and none compare to the food and service the the Troy location.
The staff is always friendly, and always attentive - my glass of water is always full. The food is always consistently good. -
Review from Bill B.
I eat at or carry out from Ashoka about 8 times a year. As a connoisseur of Indian food, I believe that Ashoka is the best Indian restaurant in the area. I have NEVER had a bad meal there. The food is always good and fresh (lots of vegetarian choices, as you'd expect). They respect your choices of spicing (unlike some places who either can't do mild or can't do vindaloo - hot). The waitstaff is attentive.
For those who like Indian food, I highly recommend Ashoka. -

Great food, great service. It's my favorite place for Indian cuisine.
I especially enjoy the thali style option. It's often difficult to chose just one entree, so the thali style turns your meal into more of a sampler. -
Review from Lily P.
The butter chicken here is great!! I always order it at other restaurants or cities but its not the same. By far the best indian restaurant in michigan and best butter chicken I have ever had. :)
I always get the same thing when I eat here or take out..or even when my friends parents offer to bring us something back. Thus I can't really comment on any of the other food but I'm sure its great too. In Troy its an easy place to get to, the naan is above what you would expect and the portions are great. -

If you are in the mood for some amazing Indian food, check this place out. My favorite dishes is the veggie koorma, the chicken tiika masala and their eggplant dish. If you are in the mood for something spicy, but can't handle much spice I suggest you order the chicken tikka masala mild and get the koorma (which is with cream sauce) to balance out the flavors. You should also try their mango yogurt drinks.

Review from Kelli A.
So disappointed in my fellow Yelpers. I was excited to try a new Indian place, after reading the reviews.
I don't give a flying fark how sophisticated your ethnic tastebuds are or how many flipping years you spent living in India!
GOOD FOOD is GOOD FOOD and BAD FOOD is BAD FOOD! Period.
I can't remember the last time I've had food SO STALE and SO VERY BLAND. Ashoka: you should be ashamed of yourself!
Appetizer plate: Garbage! Crappy, biscuity, tasteless coating on potato slices?? Chunks of chicken so old, overcooked and hard...my plate nearly shattered when I dropped one. It was so bad, I had to call the manager. Much to my dismay, he didn't seem to care one iota, insisting 'it is what it is'.
Service: S___L___O___W. Seriously, put-our-coats-on-and-headed-toward-the-door, slow. It was lunchtime buffet (not crowded at all) and we ordered off the menu. FORTY FREAKING FIVE minutes we sat and waited. As we were leaving, our food miraculously appeared.
Mulligatawny: You'd get more flavor from a cup of warm milk.
Drinks: You can't brew a bag of masala Chai tea? You don't even have to use anything authentic...humor me. Powdered instant Lipton? Really?
Naan: average.
Egg Biryani : Stale tasting rice and bland. We ordered 'medium'. Presented with 3 hideously overcooked hard boiled eggs.
Butter Chicken, ordered Thali style. Meat was tender, sauce was fairly tasty. Save your money and skip the Thali. Disappointing. The curried peas were good and the dessert was quite yummy. Other than that...
One star for atmosphere and cleanliness.
One star for butter chicken and dessert. -

Ah, Ashoka. A go-to restaurant when I'm visiting my parents.
It's a smorgasbord of Indian delights - everything is really good. I fall into a food coma after I eat here, but hey, what can you do?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE their Sag Paneer. Their nan is amazing, and they bring tandoori chicken out to the table as an appetizer. I don't eat chicken, but the meat eaters in the clan adore this. -

Our preferred Indian restaurant in the Metro Detroit area. We enjoy the mix of northern and southern cuisines, and the Indian Chinese is pretty decent. Since I can't get to Devon this place more than fits the bill!
Favorite dishes: mutter paneer, palak paneer, baigan bartha, of course the chicken tikka masala (was it the movie Bollywood that first characterized this dish as the white man's Indian sweet-n-sour chicken?), chicken vindaloo, any of the biryanis, and the Singapore noodles.
Entrees come with basmati rice and naan (naan is always greasy IMO). I like to get raita with my meals too.
Additional heat can be requested, but be forewarned that the dishes can be VERY spicy, even for a fire-eater like myself.
We've actually never done the buffet here! Not that into Indian buffets, for some reason. -

Went here last night and i must say i'm surprised.. After a rough time searching for a good indian in Michigan this place is up there being one of Michigans finest indian restaurants.. It's no where near UK curry standard but i guess this is the best it gets in Michigan.
The nan and rice are complimentary with a curry, the curry was very nice (shrimp masala) nan was good and they also served KingFisher beer (my fav).
I would go again, but i sure miss my UK curry :-(.. If you guys tried a curry in the UK you will understand where im coming from.
