I don't know why folks are harping on slow service. Maybe on a Sunday, but when I'm heading to work during the week the food comes out faster than any fancy-shmantz Jamaica Plain or Cambridge spot and it's always good and fairly priced (you can't say that happens anywhere else!).
On the menu I suggest trying out the fish cakes and beans, it's baked beans so maybe it's some kinda weird New England thing. I liked it, but I wish it was some spicy black beans or something. Also pancakes are awesome, steak is good (steak and eggs $6.99!), and omelets are better than the average diner.
The true test of any diner type place however is the potatoes, and they pass with flying colors at Ashley's. If you were going to say the coffee, forget it, the coffee here is coffee, not dark french roast. As it should be, it's usually included in the price of breakfast!
Long live Ashley's! -
Review from Farrah K.
I ventured here on a recommendation from a local real estate agent. Normally, I wouldn't really creep into this neighborhood as it seems to not be the safest in Dot, but what the heck its supposed to be yummy, and the agent was a person whose judgement I really trusted.
Definitely a cute breakfast place and has a convenient free parking lot next door. The menu had quite the selection and the prices couldn't be beat. Very affordable. Walking in, it was packed which is a good sign for a brunch place on a Sunday.
The food was delicious. I had blueberry pancakes and sampled some of the sweet potato homefries. These were crazy talk. What an amazing idea and why haven't I seen it before? They were mixed in with white potatoes (not straight up sweet potato) and heavily salted. I will say they were too salty, but still very good. An indulgence at brunch one should avoid on a routine basis but enjoy occasianally if you are a heavy gym user/runner!
I guess this place is owned and operated by Trinidadians. They noticed me right away and I was asked several times "Where I was from". Turns out they were concerned about me potentially being Indian (which I am not). The waitress ranted on for a while about how Indian people don't accept Trinidadians as fellow Indians... uh, I just want more coffee. Overall though the folks here were extremely warm, friendly and welcoming. I recommend you venture here for some DELICIOUS breakfast. Heads up: Cash only! -

I'm not sure what is going on at Ashley's these days. The food is still good, BUT- the prices have GONE THROUGH THE ROOF!
At first, I thought it was an error when my total for two was higher than normal. On my most recent visit, I noticed the guy in front of me asking for a receipt as he was questioning his total. When Miss Cashier rang me up, it LITERALLY took ALL the cash I had, and I was actually short 10cents. This was breakfast for TWO, not six.
Ashley's, you're family owned, you're in the hood, your food is great, your GRITS are heavenly, I WANT to support you, send my peeps to you, but I'm kinda done with you and your prices. I'm not so sure you're worth the money anymore. My how you've changed since my first review in '07. I understand inflation, recession, etc., but your prices have become scandalous.
You've disappointed me. I'm saddened.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Best Local breakfast in Boston. the wait is worth it! I go for the big breakfast which includes pancakes or french toast, grits or hash browns, side toast, eggs, coffee or tea. Good for those days when you want a big breakfast to hold you for a while. Get there early!. Service is always great, a little slow but staff is very welcoming. Parking can be a hassle but it is worth it.

Great local spot for a quick breakfast, although they get a little overwhelmed and slow down on Sundays. They have tasty fresh pastries and where else can you get grits in Boston?
