9 reviews for A'shay
I'd like to say YAY for the taste and BOO for the price.
We got the apple salad with greens and mango citrus dressing which was really addictive. I don't think I stopped shoveling into my facehole until there was nothing left on the plate. And even then I considered sopping up the remaining dressing... if only I'd had some bread to assist me with this.
As for entrees, I ordered the shrimp with garlic and plantains. Good solid entree, I'll say. It was the perfect amount of food for me, but I like small portions. I can see how other people would be a little ticked at $14 for 6 shrimp with some plantains and that's it... no rice, no other veggie. They weren't even jumbo and I believe they were supposed to be. Equally unsatisfying bang-for-the-buck-wise was the BF's entree, the salmon with coconut rice. It was delightful, but for $14 there should be some sort of vegetable pairing with the dish.
I'll surely return because A'Shay is not on the regular rotation, it was a nice change of pace and taste, but I'm a little bummed that we spent $50 on yet another so-so dinner in Williamsburg.
I went here based on the reviews from my fellow yelpers and was very disappointed. My boyfriend and I got the mac n cheese to start( that was good) and then I got the lamb and he got the chicken pot pie. The lamb chops were the smallest chops I have ever seen, it was almost as if they shrunk when they got cooked. the two chops were about 3 bites of food total not to mention they put a huge heap of potatoes on the side and to say the least they were not good. How can you not make potatoes tasty? The pot pie was not in a pie(fine) but looked like a bunch of mush. He said it was ok.
I almost forgot the fact that when we walked in, the restaurant was empty and the waitress asked me if we had reservations...?
prices weren't worth its value.
sorry but, gotta get my hate on.
went here for my girls birthday dinner since we were going around the corner to east river bar and it was real close by and it was pouring our that day anyway. read some good things about this place from the few previous posts that were here and was especially impressed that everyone enjoyed their dishes.
well. I knew the prices would be slightly above average and nothing ridiculous - but i thought the food would compensate for that, but unfortunately it didn't come anywhere near close. I hope it was just the dishes we ordered but truthfully we don't intend to return to find out.
we started off with 2 types of sake drinks each 10$ in about a 4"tall glass - 1 sweet / the other dry - no complaints
for appetizers we got some salad with both green and red apple slices with a mango vinegarette - which my girlfriend ordered and couldn't stand the strange tangy aftertaste of what i thought was the dressing. in her words 'it tasted like wood'. our second appetizer was the chicken satay skewers which were good. but nothing special the sauce was peanutty but not spicy or salty at all. the chicken was dry and bland.
for our entrees i ordered mussels in a mexican chili sauce which was extreeemely salty but edible, i kept saying my mussels taste better than this. She ordered an herb crusted lambchop with potatoes which was good but she said just 'tasted fancy chicken nuggets'... which i could see in consistency and texture but it of course tasted like lamb to me. all the while our hostess/waitress kept coming by much too often and it began to make us feel uncomfortable - she might as well of took up a seat next to us and just watched us eat by the amount of times she came over to ask us if everything was O.K. - it was rather empty only one other couple shared the restaraunt.
the small saving grace was two small scoops of yummy pistachio ice cream - that tasted like and probably scooped out of a breyers box...
all in all NO DISH was memorable. and when I'm going to pay for a above average meal for my girlfriends birthday I kind of have those expectations. while im at the hating - i probably should throw in that the interior looks like something out of the high end patio furniture section at KMart - but it goes well in the garden, it looked lovely out there but unfortunately it was raining.
Ordered here & made my bf pick up the food shortly after they opened for business. I believe we had the crab cakes and I forget the other dish that we've ordered but I remember the food being delicious! It is a bit pricey but I'd like to take a stroll to the actual restaurant & have a nice dinner there soon.
A'shay receives high marks. This is a new restaurant that got it right the first time. From the moment we walked in the door not only did the owner greet us, but the entire staff greeted us. It was reminisent of a life in the hospitable southern part of the US. I know because I am from the south. The owners are a cute couple who developed an amazing menu of their personal favorites. This is far beyond a seafood restaurant, it is more of a global fusion of Caribbean, African, traditional American, and comfort food.
This is what my palate had to say:
Order as much as you can and turn it into a festival of flavors. The lettuce wraps were delicious, with a homemade peanut sauce that was thick and flavorful. The MACARONI AND CHEESE was over the top. Eat your heart out Dumont. I think you have a true rival. It gets better. There is a wonderful yuca cake appetizer served over a wonderful tomato sauce blend, seasoned with a few secrets (they wouldn't tell). I chased it all down with their zesty ginger lemonade. The lemonade was a great feature. I was apprehensive about the dose of ginger, but it was actually perfect. Someone here knows what they are doing.
On to the main course: we ordered the Citrus Wild Salmon served with coconut basmati rice with a balsamic reduction drizzled around the plate. I felt like a sow who found truffles....just digging in at every chance. Finally, someone in Brooklyn knows how to prepare a perfect salmon fillet at the right temperature. The succelent tender salmon was just what I needed to fulfill my dining fantasy. My partner ordered the Crab Cakes, which were served in a unique meringue shape. The crab was fresh and plentiful, just the way it should be. We ordered Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. They ran out of Chardonnay, but Jasmine, the owner, gave my partner the remaining 3 ounces gratis. Now, where do you receive that type of service? I almost expected her to place it on the table and walk away. That's what happens at other places. A'shay obviously takes service seriously. How refreshing in the heavily populated neighborhood of restaurants attached to pubs. Needless to say, we ordered over $40 worth of beverages and we will return with friends.
GARDEN TALK
We sat out back in the garden. Don't be fooled by the concept of a garden. This garden should have been called the garden of eden. They have grape vines growing overhead. The last time I saw a grape vine was in Napa Valley this summer, when I indulged in the tastings at Charles Krug Vineyards. Well, now I don't have to travel 3,000 miles to indulge myself in the beauty of the west. This will be a great place for those sunset dinners: great service, great food, great drinks. Best of all, everyone works hard to make you feel right at home.
MUST HAVES:
Mac and Cheese
Sake Flight
Ginger Lemonade
Citrus Glazed Wild Salmon
Crab Cakes
Yucca Cakes
The scene:
A minimalist modern dining room with an open kitchen. The space is unexpectedly gorgeous. I did not enjoy the dining room because the garden is the best place to be.
If you want a place where you can show off your eclectic tastes, check out A'shay. It is just a short walk from both the L Train and the JMZ.
The food is consistently good and the back garden is lovely, but it's too pricey for what it is. The macaroni and cheese is completely worth it, but the portions are small and the prices are high.
They are always empty when I've been there, but I think it's because they're in a lousy location. They're wedged between the grimey takeout and nail salons on South 4th, and they are directly across from the highway overpass.
A true secret gem. The prices are extremely reasonable, the decor is a lovely serene hide-a-way; and most importantly, the food is scrumptious. The presentation is as elegant as any spot in Soho or Madison Avenue and again, the food is DELICIOUS! I almost forgot there could be places like this in NYC. I had the with Southside's Arugula Salad baby arugula, pickled apples, roasted walnuts and dijon mustard vinaigrette, ( wasn't that hungry that evening so I got, Steamed Seasonal Vegetables for a mere $4. My guy got the Camarones Con Ajo large spicy shrimp, garlic, and plantains and was EXTREMELY pleased! we'll be going back VERY soon! Can't wait 'till the weather is nice again and we can eat in the garden. This place is the BOMB of Williamsburg!
Fantastic spot. First the garden in the back - run, don't walk, to this place while the evenings are still warm to fully enjoy this experience. It's probably the nicest outdoor dining area in NYC. Second, the food is great.
My friend and I started off with the mac and cheese and crab cakes for apps. Mac and cheese was of the creamy-not-thick variety. I would say "soupy" but I think that word has bad connotations and this stuff was good. I love Dumont's mac and cheese and this stuff is right up there. But the crab cakes is where it's at. Unless its my mother making crab cakes, my general experience is that crab cakes have a lot more filler rather than crab. A'shay's was the opposite. All crab and all delicious. My mother would be proud.
After the apps I had the mussels and my friend had the curry clams. The mussels were ok, nothing special. My friend's clams were wonderful. Perfectly seasoned, fresh...the sauce made for great dipping.
For dessert we had banana bread pudding. I love bread pudding but I am not easily impressed by any old bread pudding. This bread pudding was off the charts. Not too dry, not too moist, not too caramely, not too much banana -- just perfect.
Service was great and the only thing stopping me from giving 5 stars is that the mussels didn't knock my socks off like the rest of the experience. Like I said, run to the garden while it's still warm! Take your lady/gent there!
a'shay is getting five stars because the food here really is delicious.
my friend and i ordered the exact same thing because for some freaky reason we were on the same wavelength, and i'm bummed we didn't get two appetizers and two entrees because i want to try more of their food!
we shared the caprese salad which is served with herbed greens and holy crap it wasn't just tomato cheese and leaves on a plate. my friend grew up on a farm basically and ate caprese every night, and even she was impressed by how good it was.
then we each had crab cakes, which are served with a roasted corn remoulade and resting on a bed of julliened apples and our taste buds were smiling, and plates were almost licked clean.
please come here - eat in the garden under beautiful grapevines and feel like you're not next to the BQE (you'll have no idea it's there) and then tell all your friends to go, because this place deserves the business.
i really hope it sticks around...
