This is exactly what the doc. ordered. I feel like this is very yoga, very Sacramento, very balanced. I signed up for the beginner's special. I feel great about the people and the practice.

The noon class offered a gentle suggestion of coming back into center, and how to remind yourself of your self. Instructor Kate was warm, kind and permeated the room with a wish of well being for all of us.

A truly enjoyable space. And, my arms look great :)

This place is awesome! I'm new to Yoga and everyone has been super helpful with getting me started.  I just finished my "New Student" pass and renewed for another month.  There is something special about this place; the ambiance, the instructors, and everyone that is there to practice makes for a good vibe.  I don't mean to sound too cheesy, but practicing yoga here has made a positive impact on my life. Both physically and spiritually(and its only been a month)!  Now getting my Asha on is a must :D

There's a reason this place gets 5 stars from pretty much everyone that has ever written a review of it. Friendly, knowledgable staff. Resonable pricing and comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.
I highly recommend Asha Yoga for beginners to expert yogis alike.

This is one place in Sacramento where I have trouble finding anything wrong with it. Important stuff to know....

    1) No heat, and the owner periodically polls students to check in with them to see if they want heat after all. But most of the students say they come to Asha because of no heat. I like how she asks us, though!

    2) Like others have said, the teachers here feel very unique in Sacramento for how much they are open and care about students. On top of that, they all are really knowledgeable about modifications for poses depending on injuries, how you're feeling that day, etc.

    3) Parking...actually, there's a ton of street parking that's free now, especially since they recently removed the meters in front of the studio! If you're going to a workshop that's more than 2 hours, I recommend parking on 18th street, between K and J (4-hour meters) and walking the two blocks. I can always find a spot for my bike, too (though the MARRS building management should put more bike racks in those areas where they ripped out plants and put decomposed granite down--but that's not really related to Asha...)

    4) The instructors always set up their area with what kind of props you will need at a minimum so follow that--or grab more. Very helpful for beginning students!

    5) I love how this studio's teachers doesn't try to push too much philosophy on you or too much physical stuff, either. If you don't want to do the "om" at the end, no one is going to hold it against you (or even notice). If you do the "om," there's no pressure to have an insight or anything--I like it because it makes the inside of my chest buzzy. :)

    6) The Living Yoga program not only is one of the best deals in town in terms of what you get for your $$, but it WILL change your life. Even just a little bit. You don't have to end up a yogi for it to have some effect. Can't recommend it enough!

I signed up with the beginner's special.  10 days for $20.  As soon as you walk into the place, you notice how serene and balanced the place is.  All the instructors bring to you a sense of peace and they all have a way of bringing out something you didn't know you were missing.  I'm unable to express in words how awesome I felt after my yoga sessions.

What works for me is their noon yoga sessions.  Very convenient and they change daily so you do not get bored.

For newbies: don't be afraid to start.

Some other places I've been do are so centered on the actions and this places gives you opportunities to develop your body and mind.   Do yourself a favor and at least try this place out - you won't regret it.

During a visit out to Cali this past spring, I made sure to note a couple of local yoga studios close to where I was staying. Asha was the winner. Big winner indeed! I was lucky enough to share mat space with Robert's noon community class (cost by donation). What an amazingly insightful class. Smooth vinyasa flow, with some short breathing breaks. I modified both on my own and with Robert's help and didn't feel like I was missing out on anything.

During the chant at the end of class, the collective om was the most harmonious, peaceful and warm I've ever heard--and felt. It was like the whole room hugged me. Sheer bliss.

After class, I spoke with Robert and the desk clerk(Juliet? I remember she was a teacher and also very sweet and smiley.) for a good 10-15 mins.; about travels & yoga mostly. His presence was so calm, mellow and grounded. He was even kind enough to take a photo with me.

I wound up purchasing a Asha brand tshirt that reads "dynamic yogi" and definitely felt like one after that class.

There aren't any showers and only a small changing room, so come prepared to practice if you can. I did a quick change in the bathroom since I was in there to go anyway. There was cubby space for shoes/little bags at the back of the studio and mats, blocks, etc right inside the studio for use. I think mats are rentals.

Should I find myself in the neighborhood again, this yoga studio will be my go to for sure!

I have been making the rounds to the local studios trying to find that just right fit. Asha has been one of my favorite places to go so far. I am definitely not a twisty yoga master and one of the things that I liked most was the knowledge and friendliness of the staff. The space is very serene and it is quite easy to get over the self conscious thoughts that the teachers keep telling you shouldn't matter. I cant speak to how good this place is if you are an experienced yogi, but for a novice such as myself Asha certainly helped make me more at ease with the poses and mindset of my new practice.

This is a PEACEFUL, SERENE, & STRESS FREE Practice. I feel very honored to have practiced with the owner Cori and Deborah. I have attended the Balanced Yogi and Mellow Yogi. It honestly took me a few sessions to appreciate the practice but this is a practice well needed to clear your mind and focus on no other than yourself.

The studio is beautiful, welcoming, and feng shui. The staff are wonderful as well, so when needed a break from your busy and stressful life Asha is the place to go.

Parking can be difficult so carpool with a friend or park a few blocks down and enjoy the stroll through K street. Parking is free after 6pm, otherwise you'll have to pay.

    NAMASTE

I signed up for the 10 day $20 special for beginners.  I am really glad that my first session (dynamic yogi) was with Kristine Clark.  Her class was challenging and I left Asha exhausted physically but rested mentally.  This was exactly what I was looking for in trying out yoga for the first time.

I am not giving it a 5 star rating because I attended a session of dynamic yogi with Cori Martinez.  Instead of being challenging, her class was just painful.  It was probably meant for experienced yogis.  Additionally, she made some  comments regarding her religious beliefs which didn't seem very tolerant and accepting of other religions.  If I had my first yoga experience with Cori, I would totally write yoga off but thank you Kristine for recognizing beginners in your class and ensuring that they don't feel left out.

I attended the Yoga 101 class for beginners today with no prior experience. The studio was dimly lit and calming and clean. Cori, the instructor/owner? taught the class of 5 and went over the basics of yoga and several poses. I felt relaxed and comfortable wobbling around on my mat as I got into the asanas. Cori walked around and helped me get into one of the poses better as well. I love when instructors correct you hands on. Sometimes it's not enough to just say, "push this here" and have it work.  I can't wait to sign up for classes and start to practice regularly! I sense this class and studio are the start to something great!

Asha Yoga Studio and Boutique has managed to create a balanced environment. The studio and Boutique is clean, but not stuffy. The instructors are friendly, but not pushy...spiritual AND grounded, well-educated yet humble.

Tamara was the first Yogi I took a class w/ @ Asha. Her "Dynamic Yogi" class inspired me to sign up for their $20 for 10 days intro. Next, I took a "Balanced Yogi" class w/ Cori. Both Tamara and Cori share words of inspiration and loving kindness. In addition, they walk around the class as they instruct to make sure no one is practicing "asanas" in a way that could cause injury. And if necessary they will gently help you in and out of poses. Often the classes include some type of breathing exercise and at least one collective Om :)

After my 10 day intro expired, I then decided to sign up for their 5 week challenge...currently 2 days deep...

I've been practicing Yoga for 17 years (some years more than others), and have been looking and trying different studios since moving to Sac two years ago. After my first class at Asha, I knew I'd be staying awhile.

I'm incredibly grateful to be practicing w/ such kindhearted, down-to-earth individuals and I look forward to what ever unfolds as I continue my time at Asha.

    Om Shanti. Namaste.

p.s. I also have my eye on several super fresh pieces of Yoga attire (Ahimsa to myself after 1 week of challenge :)

I believe Asha Yoga to be a place where authentic yoga can be found.  It is a place accessible to a diverse audience: young, old, men, women, queer, straight, pink, yellow, brown, flexible, stiff, strong, weak, maintaining health or recovering health. You will find us all here. Because of Asha Yoga... my body is toned and my endurance has strengthened. This is a result of my physical practice within the amazingly creative and fun classes provided by the high quality teachers. Each teacher is truly inspiring and yet diverse from the others. I encourage you to sample all three types of classes, dynamic, balanced and mellow. Balanced is my personal favorite.

I also highly recommend the advanced studies and living yoga programs both have allowed me to take my yoga practice to another level. I am now able to better understand my mind, recognize my feelings, appreciate my body, and have deeper awareness of who I am and how I consciously contribute to the larger community. So, here is a small story to explain.  I have been practicing yoga for years (self taught in Peace Corps and three years in the studio), but there are many poses that still challenge me and I am unable to do, like hand stands. In addition, I am currently focusing my practice on Asteya, meaning 'not stealing' from myself the opportunities of what could take place regardless of success, failure, past experiences or preconceived ideas. So, the other day my teacher (and Asha owner) Cori was talking about the friendly universe, and how at times painful events do not seem so friendly, but that they are in retrospect. I thought about this on a  world scale and was not completely sold on the idea. How can the Gulf oil spill be friendly? Then the friendly world sent me a message... the other morning I was running late to yoga, and instead of lifting my foot for the curb I ran right into it. Falling hard on my knee: bang, scrape, blood...pain. A small two minute sob on the curb and then picked myself up and headed to class, where we proceeded to do handstands and finally I succeeded with an assist. The friendly world reminded me that my mind held on to the fear of falling until I actually fell and truly experienced pain. Then I knew what the hurt of falling felt like and understood the soft wood of the studio was no comparison to the hard concrete. Thanks for the NUDGE! I appreciate that my practice and yoga's never ending challenges have strengthened my mind and body. I understand that my fear and pattern of robbing myself of opportunities is not unique to myself and I love that this is the basis for community. I am a community builder at heart and believe in the power of yoga, music, peace, love and kindness. If you read this, do not ask me to do a hand stand, but I will gladly embrace you at Asha.

    Namaste!

Love the energy of Asha, the instructors, the staff and the variety of yoga classes. Rather than focus on only one style of asana, you can choose a class that fits your energy for the day--dynamic (power), balanced (yin) and mellow (restorative). I love how many different styles are offered and have recruited many friends to try it out as well.

Yes, I have reviewed Asha Yoga before and I still think this place is fantastic.  All the teachers are great.

I would like to review James Kapicka's classes.  He is an incredible teacher.  There have been times when I have struggled with other teacher's styles being too abrupt or too slow or just not working for me.  James has been able to bridge both a highly challenging practice together and the ability to focus you on ideas other than your bodies disagreement of the position you are currently holding (ugh saddle!!).  He talks about his life's teachings and experiences and he brings relevant stories to the practice that are very soothing and inspirational.  And he really does a highly challenging practice.  He has pushed me (in a very good way) beyond what I have expected from other teachers more 'structured' (for lack of a better word) styles.  You know the next day that you have done something because your body tells you (in a very good way).  This review is not meant to bash the other teachers because they are great.  I will continue to go to any class that fits into my schedule.  They really are great.  My opinion is that James is the most well rounded and challenging for what I am trying to accomplish in my life.  I highly recommend that everyone try one of his classes at least once.  You will NOT be disappointed.  My only constructive comment would be that he should teach more classes!

    Asha is great!

Asha Yoga is my Sacramento Sanctuary.  It is clean, relaxing and they have a myriad of classes to chose from on any given day.  What I like best are the instructors though.  I have taken about 20 classes all together now and have enjoyed each one.  As a hairstylist I  realize my body needs to be in it's top form to give me endurance in my career.  Recently I pulled a muscle in my neck and shoulder but took a class from  my favorite instructor Maureen. I explained my injury and she dedicated a whole class to strengthening and soothing those muscles on the spot.  Within a few days I was feeling back to my old self.  I recommend Asha for yogis like me who don't like to leave the grid, who don't like trendy crowded places and who are seeking a communal experience with the benefits of spiritual and physical health.

Excellent yoga as fitness/relaxation/spirituality, as versus yoga as a trend taught by ex-jazzercize folks.  Great, peaceful environment and truly caring instructors.  Not yogier-than-thou.  I echo the comment about mixing-up the teachers a bit, but most all of them are really quite good; a little variety is sometimes nice, though.

I have had such a positive experience at Asha Yoga. As a newcomer to yoga and the area, I have been warmly welcomed. I took the Yoga 101 course with my 13 year-old son, and the experience was so wonderful...I learned a lot about the history of yoga, the intricacies of different poses, met people in the community and saw my son blossom. I have tried other studios, but I feel at home and motivated to continue on my journey at Asha. I keep encouraging my family and people that I meet to go, which I never do unless I feel really, really good. My son even goes!

i did a practice here tonight. My Yogini friend and I took two classes back to back.  Great energy from the moment we walked in. I had found Asha during Second Saturday in Sacramento. The stuido has a beautiful easy feeling . I loved the feeling of the floor  too, It is a very warm dark brown.  It is a fun. mellow place, where I could tell the teachers really love what they do. We left feeling revived, not drained. I like to experiement with different studios when I travel or when I am home. It broadens my practice and I always learn something new. Nice boutique with Om girl and HardTail. Namaste to all of you...

Beautiful.  Warm.  Inviting.  Classes that work you and relax you at the same time...  Isn't that what yoga should be all about?!  I feel in love with this studio the second I walked in.  I'm not sure if it is because I love the decor, marketing, or the classes more.  The boutique has more than just yoga apparel.  (It has cute dresses, bags and scarves too!)

Ride your bike or walk if you can because that part of town gets congested with parking.

Three different types of classes are offered to fit your mood any time during the week.  Change is nice sometimes. ;)  Especially the mellow yogi class on Sunday.  The prices are super competitive too.  Cheaper than most studios.

I can only see great things in the future for Asha.  I'm excited to start my new practice at such a beautiful place!!

I love this studio! The temple like space (soft lit, not a plate-glass window or mirror in sight) creates an environment of peace and sets the mood for a loving and sacred practice.  Cori is the most loving of business owners, always smiling, and her teaching is the embodiment of compassion, advising things like, "if you cannot sustain the pose with kindness, if you are only creating more tension, then come out of it" - quite a change from the push-yourself-until-you-pass-out kind of experience of other yoga I've done. It was here that I found that I could "push my edge" by RELAXING in a challenging pose (and there are still plenty of those taught).  Highly recommend the Balanced Yogi classes with Cori, Meditation with Caverly Morgan (of One House of Peace), Dynamic Yogi with Tamara, the noon classes with any teacher (they are all great, and it's a great way to break up the work day), and the 35-day Living Yoga challenge - It changed my life.  And by the way, don't be intimidated by the high-priced clothing boutique, me and my plain old t-shirts have always been welcomed here.
