Its with a heavy heart that I give Asena a 3 star review. I've been here probably 20 times in the last 2 years. The first 15 were 4-5 star dinners. But in the last 6 months the food has taken a pretty big slide. Steak specials are never very well trimmed and typically average. But their go to plates have also taken a dip in quality and attention to detail in the seasoning dept.
Here is hoping they start to get some honest feedback from folks and get the quality back up.
Service, I should note, is still top notch, no complaints about the staff what so ever. Very good folks in that respect. -

We went for lunch around 2pm.
It was quite and empty. But got crowded around 3pm.
Food. The focicca was quite good. I think they bake it there. We had the lamb in philo. It was ok needed more spices. Also had the Chicken with lemon. it was ok too.
Atmosphere: Nice. but got loud when the crowd came.
Price. It is a bit pricy for what you get.
Not sure if I would go again. -

This is a very busy little spot in Alameda. I had a dinner special and thought it was delicious. I had a difficult time picking from the menu, I wanted it all.
The 3 other people I went with all enjoyed their meals. It was very busy, noisy, and the wait staff can barely steer around the tables. They could probably get rid of a table and add an extra waiter. But you go to restaurants for the food, and hence all be back here soon. -

I've been going to Asena for at least 10 years and not disappointed when I return. Favorites are still on the menu, the hummus appetizer, house salad (that used to be included when ordereing an entree), and anything with their lemon cream sauce. We were there last Friday night, happy to see familiar faces with their attentive wait staff. Everyone enjoyed their meals, wine recommendations, and the service provided. Great job maintaining the restaurant over the years!

We showed up w/o reservations and Mustafa was super chill about giving us a table. We ordered the special, "Halibut," and it was absolutely perfect. The atmosphere is distinguished, but casually formal. The waiter was friendly and attentive to our table. We look forward to eating at Asena in the near future. I will most-likely bump up the review to 5 stars after our next visit.

Excellent food. The chicken filo pastry curry was to die for. Wonderful service, the owner was a delight to meet. Thank you for a delicious meal! Worth every penny. Make reservations as this restaurant gets packed!

Mmmm...gnocci. Why are you so good?
This place has a nice atmosphere and the food is pretty tasty. I'm just not totally sold on it.
I do like how it's a bit tucked away from the bustle of Park Street.
Prices are like what you'd pay at an Italian place. Actually, the menu seemed more Italian than Mediterranean than me. I dunno... -

As a recent addition to Alamed Island, I have been asking locals for restaurant recommendations and Asena had come up several times. As a former resident of San Francisco, and a patron of many restaurants in the city, I have high expectations. Asena has a really nice atmosphere, a great wine list and exceptional food. The staff is always friendly and the food comes out quickly. Although I would not call this restaurant inexpensive, there is great value here especially when compared to similar restaurants in the city.

I always expect more when I go out in Alameda. I don't think I've experienced disappointment before but I definitely had that taste in my mouth today. I thought we were going Mediterranean and Asena's menu appears to have the Southern influences of Italy and France rather than Turkey which is odd since the owners are Turkish.
The house salad was really very good with red leaf lettuce, spicy pecans, kalamata olives, and Gorgonzola cheese for about four bucks. But there were only about four bites so that comes out to a buck a bite.
I ordered the Angel hair pasta with fresh basil (large pieces), garlic, tomato, extra virgin olive oil, Parmagiano Reggiano which tasted good but the pasta was definitely over cooked. You know how it is when the pasta gets too starchy and sticks together. Yeah. You've had that before. Worst of all? It wasn't on the menus listed ingredients but there was artichoke in the pasta. I love artichoke but not the pieces that are woody and have the sharp ends still attached. Oh no...I had to indelicately spit that out into my fancy white napkin. They really need to trim those before serving.
My friend had the daily special of pasta with mussels, prawns, and salmon (?) but pushed it away after two bites. I don't know but it didn't even look like something I would want to eat either. I found it interesting when they cleared his full plate that they didn't even inquire if there was a problem. Maybe they are accustomed to this?
I heard that others were happy with the veal medallions, seared carrot soup, and the desserts. If I were only planning on enjoying a nice glass of wine and some crème brulee then I might consider coming back and for that they get one extra star.Listed in: Hungry for Lunch in Alameda

A hidden gem in Alameda! It's funny how it's located by my insurance agent but I never considered trying it until I got invited by my sister's friend!
When we got there, we had to wait because the restaurant was pack. The wait wasn't bad cuz the hostess kept on checking on us. When we got seated, our server immediately went to our table. He was very nice and had very good suggestion.
Their food was amazing! Always always try their special of the week I had the grilled salmon w veggies and mash potato and it was bomb! Portions are big! We also had a bottle of wine that was recommended by our server.
I love love the ambiance of the restaurant, it's dim making it look and feel romantic. The big windows are also perfect.
All in all it was a fantastic experience, I'm totally coming back here specially for a romantic date! -

Asena got us in on a short notice reservation. Really nice ambiance. There with a group of 4, and everyone liked their appetizers and entrees. The wine list was only average, and the service a little slow. It was also a little loud in there, but the place was packed. I would definitely go back, but maybe on a week night when the pace inside is a little slower.

Ambiance was really nice for dinner, good for a date night.
The owner/waiter couldn't be more friendly
The food was outstanding! We had crabcakes, stuffed eggplant, swordfish, and salmon. Fish was cooked to perfection as was everything else! -

Food is excellent. We shared the red and yellow beet salad. It was great. The roasted head of garlic on the onion-curry bread was to die for. I had the Petrale Sole as my entree. It was very good. I will definitely be back!

Exploding with Mediterranean flavor!
My family has been driving past this place for at least 10 years now, my sister finally dragged us in here for her birthday dinner and we were definitely NOT disappointed.
Everything was delicious, so I can't really recommend anything since their menu changes seasonally. But as a heads up: The gnocchi was the most buttery soft gnocchi I have ever tasted. And my paella was fresh with mussels and [a bit skimpy] shrimp. It was a lot to eat, but definitely worth eating.
I was pretty stuffed but my family managed to force down their creamy Panna Cotta with Caramel and fresh Raspberry Zinfandel sorbet. I might come here just for those since they were so good!
This has just landed as a new family favorite in our book! Yay! -

I've been here a few times and have never had a bad meal. The food is outstanding.
They have a very above par wine list and it seems that the wait staff knows a bit about their wines.
My server was a bit awkward/nervous. Not sure why but it just made for a little bit of an odd meal. I saw him break two corks on two bottles that another table had brought in. He also poured my glass before my date's glass...a few times. Not a big deal, but I believe in a little bit of chivalry. Offer the person who ordered the bottle the taste, then pour the lady's glass.
But, if that's my only gripe, which it is, this place is doing great! -

Maybe they were having an off night, or maybe I should really start taking other people's reviews with a grain of salt... but hmmm.
Everything we ordered tasted really meh, and that's putting it lightly. The food is SOMEWHAT Mediterranean influenced. The breaded artichokes appetizer was a joke as we only received 3 dinky little pieces with the aioli. My husband ordered the lamb stuffed eggplant and I ordered the papperdelle with Italian sausage and we both agreed that the dishes tasted like stuff we could have made at home for 1/3 of the price. My husband didn't even finish his lamb dish, he was so disappointed, and he LOVES lamb. And by the way, I HATE that. I hate going to a restaurant and throwing down my hard-earned cash for dishes that I could have made at home with my eyes closed. We go to restaurants for a REASON - to eat beautiful, well made dishes that we don't have the resources for and/or the desire to make at home. Asena totally let us down, and my husband and I left feeling really angry.
Our server was kind, but not very attentive. In fact, most of the servers seemed a little flakey. I had to ask him twice for more bread and our water glasses were empty for about 10 minutes before he called someone over to refill them (and we weren't guzzling the water down, it was sipped at a normal pace.) The atmosphere made us feel like we walked into a secret club to which we were the outsiders. The owner or manager or whoever kept schmoozing with a few tables, who I assumed were either his friends or regulars. Not once did he pass by our table to ask us how we were doing. There was lots of loud talking and laughter, but instead of making us feel like we stepped into a lively, fun place, it made us feel like the mouth-breathing, pocket-protector D12 geeks stuck at the losers table at a high school cafeteria where everyone else knew everyone else.
When we finally paid the bill and stepped out of the restaurant with sunken souls and angered hearts, the sour waft of stale urine coming from the outer entranceway suddenly felt fitting. -

De vine!!
I was in the Alameda area 10/29 and used Yelp to find this place. (Thanks BTW). We walked in right before they opened for dinner, they were SO sweet and seated us even though they weren't officially open. The servers that came to our table were so friendly, that I couldn't help but feel the genuine customer service. We ordered the hummus and Caesar salad appetizers which inhaled the moment they hit our plate. We also order the filet Mignon and the chicken apple, raisin, curry dish. Every was super tasty. Oh! And my lemon drop cocktail was fresh and perfectly tart. If ever I'm in the area again, I'll definitely drop in. -

I'll start off by saying their bread is delicious. The focaccia they served when you sat down was amazing. We ordered the curry bread with roasted garlic to start, shared a caesar and I had the hanger steak.
The garlic on the curry bread was roasted to perfection. Their caesar is a bit lacking, and I've had better elsewhere (but it's just a side salad, o it's not that big of deal). Their hanger steak came with roasted vegetables (and again whoever is doing the roasting back in the kitchen is doing a fantastic job), I ordered rare and it came out a little on the warmer side of rare -- the steak was still good though and surprisingly tender.
The ambiance was nice and the service was very friendly and relatively attentive. This is definitely a repeat customer restaurant -- most of the people that walked in after we were seated knew the waiter and most of the staff. It got pretty noisy at times (or sound was just being bounced all over the place) but not to the point it was annoying.
All in all, this is a pretty good restaurant. Good food, good location, and friendly albeit sometimes slow service. This place isn't the first thing that pops into mind when I think about Mediterranean food but, it's definitely worth a try.
Happy Eating :}! -

I was first introduced to Asena by my parents about 4 years ago. Mo the owner is so friendly and welcoming and always seats us right away. I have to be honest, my parents are regulars there.
Some of my favorite dishes include: their lamb, blackened salmon caser salad, and dessert (pacatta).
The food is extraordinary! They have a small menu; however I have to say everything on it is wonderful including their mashed potatoes.
The only thing I wish that they would do is change up the interior of the restaurant. It needs a richer feel and needs to expand a bit given their quality of service and amazing food. -

Loved it. My partner had the paella. I had halibut (a special that day). Great food. Reasonably good service. We definitely will be returning.

I'm often disappointed by Mediterranean restaurants. Its the food of "my people" after all. So therefore I have expectations of what that style of food should be, that being said here's my synopsis: bad service, dusty wine bottles, food mediocre and a fusion of Italian, and maybe French and very few actual "Mediterranean" selections on the menu, everything was overpriced. My view on Medi food is that although Italy and France do touch on the cuisine, that style of food is best represented by the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean regions, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, and Morrocco. Where a lot of garlic and herbs and fresh-from-the-garden ingredients are used for flavoring rather than heavy sauces. Anyway, that is my Mediterranean rant.
And here is my long winded review/recounting...
So my husband and I decided to try this place after we realized that the restaurant we originally came to Alameda to dine at had changed hands and this Asena place had 4 starts with over 100 reviews.
We get there, it looks cute enough (its rather small, but they made good use of the space), liked the decor. When we stepped inside however we were looked up and down by the wait staff instead of being greeted warmly. Granted we weren't dressed for white table cloth or anything, we were pretty casually dressed (I'm 8 mos pregnant, give me a break, I can't fit into any decent clothes) but its not like we were in sweats and flip flops or anything. I noticed right away that there was a greasy-dust coating on their wine selection which was prominently displayed on the bar, so who were they to judge our appearance anyways?
Once the staff finally acknowledged we were there to dine, the host said, "give me a few minutes". We were a little bewildered by this request because there were 4 empty 2-person tables right in front of us. We should have been tipped off that the experience would go downhill from there, but we were hungry and weren't too keen on driving back to Oakland to find a different place and we don't know Alameda too well so we stayed.
We're finally seated with a nice view of the wait staff's station and the kitchen storage area. Mind you they could have seated us with a view of just the bar, but I suck it up hoping the food will be decent.
We get the menu and I'm disappointed right away because there were few offerings of what I would call actual Mediterranean dishes. It was mostly Italian-esque fare with some lamb thrown in and some heavy creamy sauces. We also thought the prices were a little high, here on yelp, this place had been given $$, I would give it $$$.
We ordered the cremini mushrooms stuffed with lamb (which again had a creamy heavy sauce??) as an appetizer and the special which was salmon-filled ravioli with a lemon cream sauce. Again NOT very MEDITERRANEAN. The only truly medi things I remember seeing on the menu were the olive plate, and mint used in a savory dish (gnocchi). So the food arrives and the portions were very small, we only got 3 tiny mushrooms and 4 smallish raviolis. To top it off, the mushrooms arrived cold and the salmon was "fishy" and low quality.
The only things we liked were the bread (fluffy -spongy stuff but tasty, however not very Mediterranean) and the lemon-cream sauce on the salmon raviolis.
The owners may have been Turkish, which was my best guess considering they had Turkish wines on selection and you don't see that anyywhere, so they should know their sh*t about Mediterranean cuisine. The waiters were unfriendly and ignored us for the most part and rushed us with the bill, and two dishes, a sprite, and 2 beers were over 40 dollars. So if my hubby and I had not split everything, that's around 40-60 bucks per person if you ordered a full course: an appetizer, drink, salad, and entree. That's without dessert. In my book if two people can't get out the door for under $60, its a $$$ place. The food was so not worth it either. I'm curious to try the Turkish wine, but I'm going to have to find it somewhere else after this baby is born. :P
Looking at the other reviews, maybe they were just having an off-night or maybe they have something against pregnant ladies because they don't order wine, and maybe I'm being harsh because I am pregnant, but basically meh food + crap service + for the price = two stars from me! -

After trying twice to get in to Pappo and failing both times, I think I might be ready to give up now that I've found Asena.
After walking by for months and wondering about it; after seeing their van in the neighborhood and being reminded of it; after seeing signs in town. . . well, you get the idea - we finally tried it.
The place was packed to the gills with one holiday party after another, and our centrally located table was definitely a hub of people moving to and fro - servers delivering and clearing food and drinks, revelers delivering and hugging thanks for gifts - but we were surrounded by people who were clearly having a great time.
Everything we ordered was polished off (figs, fried artichoke hearts, salads, soups, raviolis, salmon, shrimp with orzo, lamb, tiramisu, affogato - not on the menu, but they'll make it for you - and drinks, of course), and happily.
I will certainly be back - there was loads more on the menu that looked yummy.Listed in: Island Living

Alameda, CA
The food was OK, nothing sensational or mouth watering. The service and atmosphere were really nice and I loved the attention we were getting from our waiter and restaurant owner. The pricing was not too bad either. My husband and I went here for a late evening dinner and tried the mixed olives appetizer and hummus. Our entree's were a lamb and eggplant dish as well as a special salmon in lemon sauce. The highlight of this place is really the atmosphere and service since we did not have to keep reminding them for re-fills of drinks etc. But the food was just OK, we would go back if friends are going but definitely not something were rushing back to have more of.

Albany, CA
This place is really special. I've been here several times now and have had a wonderful experience each time. It's fits nicely in between the super special occasion once-a-year restaurant and the casual spot you can indeed afford on a weekly basis (I think this applies to most people, "in today's economy"....god I'm sick of that phrase, but I'll use it anyhow.)
The space is cozy, and off the main drive in Alameda; I think it's very romantic. The owner has always been there on my visits, and always makes rounds to make sure his customers are happy. It's a family owned restaurant, and I definitely feel that the staff--of Turkish descent--are at once polite, efficient, and at ease with the customers. The female server is very beautiful, as well.
The food is really good. Not "OMG this is so creative, what IS this new crazy flavor?" good, but just well prepared, homemade Mediterranean-California cuisine; I love it. Last night, we started with the crispy breaded artichoke hearts with lime aioli, and baked black pepper brie, crispy bruschetta. Both heavy starters, but yummy. I had the whole stuffed Italian eggplant with loose lamb, gruyère, and a Marsala wine reduction--the portion was perfect, the presentation was lovely, and it tasted just right. No starch to accompany, but with the delicious complimentary bread they serve, no starch is necessary. My date had prawns over house-made papperdelle with fresh arugula, lemon béchamel--heavy, but good. We finished every last morsel. And the house red is an astonishing $5 a glass, with Alameda's Rosenblum Vintner's Cuvee Zinfandel next up at $6.50. Not bad!!
If this was SF, they could easily up each entree by $10 bucks. But it's Alameda, and it's just perfect the way it is. -

Not so great. I ordered the fish special, and promptly told they were out. So they did it with salmon. The salmon was cooked fine, but the portion was very small and the steamed (or maybe it was grilled) vegetables on the side were DROWNING in salt. Nasty. My friend's eggplant sandwich was better, but still nothing good. I would not go here again.

This is my go to "nice" restaurant in Alameda. My wife and I can walk there and the food is to die for. Last visit I had the Osso Bucco and it was the best ever. Plus they have a full bar and a $10 corkage. That alone is worth 4 stars.

I had big hopes for this spot, as it is one of few upperscale restaurants in Alameda. Maybe it was an off night. The plates seemed bland and predictable. Service was friendly and competent but not as, say, refined as I hoped. I'm not rushing to come back.
The space, though, is lively; a great place to chat and catch up with a friend. -

My husband and I like to stop by Asena for a mid-week lunch or a weekend dinner when we have time for a "grown-up" meal in Alameda. The food and ambience is that of a slightly upscale family restaurant, and the wait staff is VERY friendly and accommodating.
The menu is seasonal, but I always find (and usually start with) the mixed greens and pear salad with fried balls of chèvre. (Yum!)
The homemade pasta and the red meat dishes (as well as whatever specials we try) have never disappointed. Asena is definitely worth a visit for light Mediterranean fare.Listed in: My Neighborhood, Top Restaurants

Alameda, CA
We got together with some very good friends of ours, Jon and Lynn, for dinner before they took off for the holidays to visit their daughter finishing a semester abroad. So, we decided on Asena. As we are all veterans of Asena we know the menu pretty much by heart now so now I live for the specials. (It's great that there seem to be quite a few folks that are regulars there since they opened. Good for us and good for them!) That evening the waiter barely got "Osso" out of his mouth when I dropped my menu and said, "That's it! Osso Bucco! I'm in." I think I embarrassed Laurie with my enthusiasm. Look, it's mouth watering and rarely on the menu when we're there, so yeah, I was excited. Sometimes good food does that to me.
Needless to say it was a great meal started off with a nice cocktail (Hangar One martinis, Old Fashioneds), the Osso Bucco paired with a very nice Turkish red wine (I forgot to write it down) and finished off with some really tasty desserts and a nice port. Love this place during the holidays, mostly because of the warmth of the owners and the wait staff, but also because everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves. My husband and I came here after reading some great reviews on yelp. The food was absolutely perfect. We had the mussels for starters (soo yummy) and the crispy polenta cake and salmon ravioli for mains (also incredible).

Absolutely wonderful. They did forget to bring our appetizer until I reminded them when they brought put our entrees but it was all gravy as they served it within two minutes later and on the house as well. The bf ordered a Three Citrus Margarita and loved it. I had a glass of their house white wine and liked it. The bf tried to steal my glass and so I ordered him a glass. I had the stuffed chicken breast--so yummy. The mashed potatoes served on the side was sooo good. The bf ordered the ravioli special with Italian sausage and pesto--sooo good. Dessert was a-ma-zing. Blood orange cheesecake and the raspberry Zinfandel sorbet--easily my favorite of the entire meal. Service was awesome; the owner checked up on us frequently. Definitely a spot to take someone on a date. Bf loved it too; he had no complaints.
We will definitely be back. =) -

I tried this place last night and the reviews were right on. Close to 5 stars but not quite.
First off, the food was great. Bread.....some of the best I've had. The soup....awesome (which they gave to us for free). And the main dish was very good. The servers were very friendly and always checked in to see how we were doing. The atmosphere was cozy and had a good "family owned and operated" feel.
Anyone looking to try something new I would give this place a thumbs up. I will definitely be going back! -

The owners of this establishment pride themselves on knowing their clients well. Their daily specials and general lunch menu are always delicious, and i always leave satisfied.
Best selling points here: The bread with olive oil and vinegar (can't get enough of it), and mushroom raviolis.
Thinking of trying the pear salad next that my coworkers seem to love.
