I cannot say enough about the wonderful care my kitty, Arthur, received at ASEC.  Arthur suffered from a variety of ailments including Lymphoma, Diabetes, Anemia and heart failure. The internal medicine team, lead by Drs. Cohen and Trivedi, were our little guy's biggest advocate. They, along with the internal medicine assistants Karina and Rachele, showered Arthur with love and the finest medical care one could imagine. They never gave up on him, not even at the very end.

I can't recommend ASEC enough -- they feel like family members to us now.

I had a good experience with this place.

On Friday, May 4th, I found my parrot bleeding profusely in his cage; his cagemate had bitten into his toe - just how badly I couldn't quite tell yet.

I'm not good with blood.  At all.  For the next twenty minutes I tried to cleanse the toe with water and inspect the extent of the injury in between heaving over the toilet and nearly passing out.

When after 20 minutes passed and the bloodletting still wouldn't stop, it was obvious I had an emergency on my hands.  I called my regular vet office, who, of course, was 5 minutes from closing.  They referred me to ASEC.  I hesitated when they said they don't specialize in birds but will see all animals (it is imperative to have an avian vet as a bird owner!), but I didn't have a choice at that point.

I called ASEC for information.  The first call was about how long the wait was and their location.  The second call was about cost ($107 for the office price, cost plus for any procedures/treatment above that).  The third call was placed frantically on the drive over when I couldn't find their office, was panicking and crying hysterically, as I realized my parrots toenail had come completely off in the car and there was even more blood.

Both receptionists that managed my phone calls were friendly, calm and reassuring.  Exactly what you need to hear on the other end of the line in an emergency!  They assured me they'd take my bird right to the back when I got in.

Upon entering, true to their word, they took him straight back.  They stuck me in an exam room and had me fill out two standard forms, everything thoroughly explained, including my wait time and what the vets were up to.  They said I could walk around if I wished and that they'd find me when they were ready, which was nice, instead of feeling trapped (those rooms can make you feel anxious!).

I should say here that the exam rooms were large and immaculate.  The waiting area was also very large and immaculate with ample seating.  There was a vending machine, TVs, magazines, a bathroom.  All good things to have when you're worried sick about your pet and need a distraction while you wait.

After about 30 minutes Dr. Yamamoto came in and explained everything very clearly to me.  Took more history of the bird and provided recommendations for what to do next.  She said she wanted to monitor him for another 20 minutes before discharging us to ensure the bleeding didn't start up again and that he continued acting normally.  True to her word, we were discharged 20 minutes later.

My bird is sore and still recovering from his injury, but he is fine and THANK GOD didn't bleed to death because of this team.

    Thanks to all involved :)

4 stars only because they trimmed the rest of his toenails without asking me first which I got charged a hefty amount for.  I was waiting to get his nails trimmed by my regular vet who uses a dremmel instead of clippers.  Dremmels are far more humane.  With clippers you are likely to cut into the quick and make the nails bleed, which did happen to him there, and I thought he should've been spared any further toenail trauma.  She made the call because she felt the nails could've caused him to get hung up and further injured.

Total cost of visit = $160.

My dog was referred here after a tumor was found in her upper palate. More than $1000 worth of tests later, it was determined to be cancerous. Because of my dog's advanced age and the fact that the tumor was almost certain to grow back if surgically removed (along with a portion of her jaw), I chose palliative care under Dr. Downing. Although I didn't object to the quality of care or its high cost, I was very distressed that after arriving on time for appointments, we were kept waiting for long periods of time--over 30 minutes the first visit, and nearly an hour on the second, which turned out to be two days before my dog's death. On neither occasion did anyone in the large staff offer an explanation about the wait; we were kept in a room and ignored. On the last visit, Dr. Downing said when I asked why we had been kept waiting that another dog needed her--as if my very sick dog didn't. It was this attitude that made me decide my dog would never spend another minute there, or be subjected to more pointless treatment. When she stopped eating the next day, I contacted a wonderful home vet not affiliated with ASEC and scheduled a euthanization. His compassion and respect for us is the only bright spot this heartbreaking story.

Update: After this review was posted, I got an abject apology from Dr. Downing in a phone message, along with news that the payment for my last visit would be refunded. I wish I could say these gestures helped, but they were too little, too late, and I couldn't care less about the money. Clearly, Dr. Downing and ASEC are  chagrined to have been called out on their callousness to me and my beloved dog, and this self-serving attitude makes me all the sorrier that my dog was subjected to their treatment. Perhaps my experience will improve the quality of care for others, but I will never return to find out.

I am very dismayed to visit this site and see one negative comment about this fabulous team of doctors and staff.  I have never experienced such a high level of
    care, concern and professionalism.

I sit here tonight with my beautiful Birman cat, Farrah, who was experiencing renal failure and if had not been for the quick work of Dr. Chadik and her wonderful, caring staff upon admission, I am sure I would have lost her.

The next couple of days were a whirlwind of tests and decisions.  Every step of the way I was guided by a team of what I would consider some of the best doctors in the country.  I had the great honor and pleasure to work with Dr. Dolance, Dr. Kim, Dr. Leonard and Dr. Yamamoto.  They are simply the best there is and I will never be able to thank them enough for their kindness and complete dedication to giving Farrah the best treatment available.

People have asked me why I would drive 36 miles in Los Angeles traffic in an emergency to this hospital.  I think the above answers that question pretty well.

I have been taking my cat here for the last 2 years and have been happy with her treatment.  My kitty suffers from a variety of ailments, but the primary one is lymphoma.  I sought out this facility because of Dr. Downing.  Dr. Downing previously treated my other cat several years ago at another facility.  When that kitty lost her fight with cancer, Dr. Downing was sympathetic and made a donation to a cancer charity in my kitty's name.  To me, that was incredibly special and I really felt like she cared about me and my cat.  The people at ASEC are always friendly, and take good care of my cat.  It's not cheap, and you do sometimes have to wait a bit to see the doctor.  But, in my experience with my many pets at many vets, this is not unusual.  That's why I've got pet insurance and patience.

Like most urgent care facilities, these people really bank on the fact that you are hysterical and with a pet who needs immediate attention.  The last time I was here, my cat had been suddenly vomiting profusely, and after $300 in x-rays, they said they saw what they thought was a large mass in my cat's stomach that looked like 'kitty litter' [but it could be gas], and said they would have to perform surgery.

Instead of taking any kinds of x-rays the morning of the procedure to see if the mass had moved or was even a mass/blockage at all, I [and at this point had been up all night the previous night crying already] got a call saying what the surgical options were, and their cost.

There were three options: using an endoscope and grabbing whatever they could [$1500], invasive surgery [$3,000], or possibly even both, if I were to opt for the endoscopic surgery and they couldn't remove the mass without going in for further surgery [$5,000].  I just wanted my cat to be ok, and asked their honest opinion on what to do, and they suggested endoscopic to start.  I agreed to it, but in hindsight, I probably should have requested another x-ray first...

When they finished, I received a call, and I asked what the mass was.  They were really shady and described it as something like jelly, etc., but hadn't even saved a specimen.  But YOUR CAT IS OK, YAY? :D

Don't get me wrong, I am elated that my cat came out alive, but while certain things can't be said for sure until you 'go in' and see for yourself, the response I got after my cat's surgery was both evasive and suspicious.  Odds are, she didn't need it in the first place, was the second opinion I got.  They also told me she had a heart murmur [I heard other people being told the same about their pets while we waited], which upon further inspection by two other veterinarians, was proven to be false.  Something just feels fishy about the dire diagnoses they throw out there at ASEC.

Two overnight stays and $3,700 later, I was not very impressed.  I had asked for some laxatone [kitty hairball-diffusing gel] to make sure no blockages occurred in the future, and after being charged for it, they not only forgot to give it to me, but had no idea what I was talking about and had to look at my receipt of payment twice before someone would come out with a tube.

If something dire is immediately happening to your pet, I would not say to avoid this place, but unless you have an endless income to pay for the hefty bill and aren't expecting to get much in return, I would think twice.  I have been to other emergency veterinarians that have both saved my pets' lives and also given them superior service warranting a higher pricetag, but I just didn't feel like ASEC compared in the slightest.

My 50#, 9 y.o. German Shepherd mix tore his ACL and required surgery.  After speaking with Dr. Balfour who recommended my dog have a TPLO, I scheduled the surgery immediately. My dog made a speedy recovery and 6 months later is running and jumping like nothing happened. I was very happy with the competency and treatment offered by ASEC, and would not hesitate to bring my dog back again should he require it.

The surgery and follow-up ended up costing close to $5000. I can't speak to whether or not this is expensive, as I have nothing to compare it to. Medical treatment is expensive in general and fortunately I was in a place to be able to afford it.  In other circumstances maybe I would have compared prices.

I had to come to ASEC a few times in the last 5 yrs for numerous dogs. Every time I come, I only come to see dr. Anderson, who is great btw. The front staff seems very knowledgeable and are on top of their sh*t. Much more professional then most vet offices I go to. They help you right away, they smile, they are friendly and welcoming. If your dog needs a specialist, I would recommend ASEC.

The only downside and why I only gave the place 4 stars is because 1. they are CRAZY expensive, 2. it takes a bit long to check out and get out of there. I think I hung around for 25 mins after the appointment was over just to get my paperwork, invoice and receipt.

Other then that, the place is clean, there is a separate dog and cat waiting area (great for cat people who don't want dogs all up in their cats grill), and they have everything a vet office should have all under one roof. Unfortunately, ASEC is not just a regular vet, so if you're there, something is probably really wrong with your pet and you will for sure spend a fortune before you walk out.

TAKE YOUR BIRD HERE IN AN EMERGENCY!

The doctors at this clinic saved my Eclectus parrot Mango's life! Birds can easily be killed by fumes given off by teflon pans, Pam spray, etc as it coats their lungs. We thought we'd gotten rid of every single product like this and turns out one of our pans that claimed not to be teflon, was (we are obviously 1000 times more careful now with this kind of thing). The fumes had gotten to Mango, he was trembling on his perch barely able to hold himself up, and there was vomit on the bottom of his cage (birds basically never vomit). I can't even describe the panic we all felt when we realized what had happened, and that in most cases birds die from this kind of poisoning.

It was a Sunday night and our regular vet was closed. In a complete panic I called around to at least ten 24 hour emergency vets in LA, (including the one in Eagle Rock where I've taken my cat before) and NONE of them would take Mango in. Avian vets are a very specific type of vet and none of the "regular" vets felt comfortable treating my parrot.

Finally I found ASEC, and was helped by the most wonderful employees. They calmly told me exactly what to do, I wrapped up my parrot and began my speeding ticket-worthy 20+ mile trek down the 405 (if my current career doesn't pan out, looks like I would do great as an ambulance driver). Thank God there wasn't traffic for the first time in 405 history.

They immediately took Mango into the back and put him on oxygen. He started looking better very quickly. They gave him several shots, one of them a steroid shot to open up his lungs, and watched him very closely. The Dr was great but obviously wasn't going to give me false hope in case he didn't make it. They kept Mango overnight and told me to call whenever I wanted to get an update. I called several times during the night, and was trying to mentally prepare myself for the worst - just in case.

The next morning they said he was doing much better, and that we could probably pick him up that afternoon! The Dr told me that what probably saved Mango was how fast I got him to the clinic. WHAT A RELIEF!!!! When we picked him up, the staff was sad to see him go! Apparently Mango had been talking up a storm after he started feeling better, and was riding around on their shoulders!

If anyone from this hospital reads my review: THANK YOU SO MUCH! I usually don't write reviews this long and drawn out but wanted to share my experience. When you lose a pet it's like losing a family member, and they helped us to keep Mango around for at least another 50 years :)

Just got home from ASEC with our great dane. We noticed she had labored breathing, was lethargic and no appetite (which i REALLY unusual for her). I quickly researched 24 hour vets in LA and chose ASEC. I'm so glad that we did.

After a thorough intake the vet recommended blood test and xrays. All charges were made very clear up front and we were informed at each point. And because she's large they actually ended up taking more xrays than we actually paid for - just made us cover the 4 angles, rather than each attempt at getting what they wanted/needed.

In the end, she was diagnosed with pneumonia and we had the option of hospitalizing her for a more speedy, but obviously more costly recovery or bringing her home for a slower, but still (hopefully) effective recovery. All of the staff was so kind. They are not super cheap, but honestly I thought the prices were quite fair for late night/emergency care and not all that far off from regular vet prices. Emergencies are expensive and make me thankful we have pet insurance.

I am a huge fan of ASEC and Dr. Swimmer.  I rushed my dog, Chubs, to them when he suddenly started freaking out...flinching, shaking, unable to walk.  As soon as I walked in, the woman at the front desk was very calm and friendly and showed me a room immediately.

A vet assistant came in shortly after to ask some questions, followed by Dr. Swimmer.  She said there was definitely something neurological wrong with my dog and immediately brought him to the ICU to get his vitals taken.  Meanwhile, she asked lots of questions to get an idea of what could have happened just before he started freaking out.  She gave us many options of tests that could be done and prices for all of them before doing anything.

Well, it turns out the piece of cake I thought I saw him eat on his walk was actually a marijuana brownie.  Dr. Swimmer recognized the symptoms early on and suggested they do a drug test.  She said he would probably be fine to be taken home, but if we were really worried he could stay overnight on fluids.  We opted for him to stay overnight and the staff didn't mind me calling every few hours to check up on him.

There are two other emergency vets on the block.  But I was told by a vet friend that ASEC is the only one with an actual doctor on staff 24 hours a day.  The others only have a vet on-call.

If you love your dog or cat even a little, you'll want to avoid ASEC completely.

I brought my dog here at about 2 am one night because she was throwing up blood.  We waited in the emergency room until 4:30 am when the vet finally saw us and told me to leave her overnight. At 7 am I got a call saying that she was in bad shape and to come.

They wanted me to euthanize her so that they could use the room for someone else.  I told them that I wasn't sure if I believed in euthanasia (I hadn't thought about it at all before and was in shock since my dog was pretty young) so I thought we should wait for her to die.  She seemed like she was going to die soon (she was pretty stiff and had gone blind) so I said that I wanted to wait for her to die naturally.

A good vet would at that point explain the pros and cons of euthanasia and prepare the client for the terrible vision that is your best friend dying (they poop themselves when they are dying).

Not ASEC.  They told me that I needed to hurry up an euthanize her because they needed the room and that my other option was to take her to the parking lot to let her die there.  I actually considered that but she's a big dog and I wouldn't be able to carry her and it just seemed wrong to be sitting in a parking lot outside a vet hospital waiting for her to die.  I asked for another room or even a closet we could sit in and they said no.

I asked if euthanasia would hurt and the response was a curt, "no, she's brain-dead".   Compassionate right?  It turns out that she wasn't brain dead though as you will read soon.

So I told them to go F*** themselves.  Call LAPD and tell them there's a girl crying on the floor hugging her dying dog and that they need help evicting me to the parking lot.  I pointed out the fact that LAPD barely responds to emergencies in a timely manner so I figured they wouldn't respond to their call quickly.

They threatened to carry me out and I told them that if they put a finger on me I would file assault charges.  I waited for the dog to die.  An hour passed and she was shaking and pooping herself.  I didn't want her to suffer but I didn't feel morally able to make a decision that would result in another being to die.  I prayed for God to kill her but it didn't happen.  Hours passed.  The ASEC people kept bothering me periodically and telling me to take her into the parking lot but I didn't care.  They kept saying she was brain dead and that I was being unreasonable.

And then as I was crying and hugging her, I told her that I would put her to sleep if she could just give me a sign, any sign that I had her permission to do so.  Right then she opened her eyes, turned her head and looked at me, smiled feebly, kissed me twice gently, and then went back into the stiff unresponsive pose.  I took that as a sign and told them that I was ready to euthanize her now.

Honestly I would have rather euthanized all those bastards in the office than my best friend that day.

I would never wish ASEC on my worst enemy.  I used to wish that everyone I interacted with that day would have just as terrible end-of-life care for themselves but now I simply wish that they would either grow a sense of compassion or get out of the business altogether.

I'm sure my dog wasn't the first or last animal to die there so hopefully sooner or later these people will get a proper end-of-life care procedure.

    Shame on all of them.

If your dog needs surgery, this is the place to go.  I think you need a referral from your regular vet as they specialize in emergency and surgical situations.  They vets are board certified experts in their field.  And they are honest.  Not money hungry like every other vet I've been to.  Not saying they are cheap, but they are ethical.  Hard to find these days.

When my dog had bloat/twisted stomach, the first emergency vet we saw diagnosed it as a tumor and wanted to put him to sleep.  Thankfully we rushed him to ASEC for a second opinion.  The vet techs took one look at the x-rays and knew it was bloat (a serious and fatal condition if not treated immediately).  Dr. Sommerville operated on him and saved his life.

We were asked to pay the estimated cost of the treatment up front (about $7,500.00).  Afterward, they refunded us almost $3000.00.  They could have easily withheld the difference as I was so overjoyed that my dog was going to be okay and money was the last thing on my mind.

5 years down the line, my dog and I returned to ASEC only this time they gave me the worst news of my life-Kobe had cancer.  I would have paid whatever they asked if something could help him get better.  Well aware of this fact, the oncologist was very clear that there was no hope of him getting better-that all we could was manage his pain for as long as possible.  They didn't prey on my desperation which is more than I can say for a lot of the other "professionals" we consulted.

Our dog had a melanoma and our family researched a lot of vets and treatment options before settling on surgery.  At first we took her to City of Angels in Culver City.  Their facilities were clean and I trusted the surgeon, but we wanted to speak to ASEC as well since we had heard great things from family and friends.

ASEC is not as posh as City of Angels, but the oncologist, Dr. Downing, is simply amazing.  She answered all our questions directly (no roundabout responses), was thorough, gentle, and secured our piece of mind that this was the right place.  In being direct, she didn't scare us into adding unnecessary procedures, a tactic City of Angels did employ.

Dr. Anderson was our surgeon.  He displayed better bedside manner than I expected from a surgeon and obviously did a great job during the actual procedure because our dog was energetic and excited by the next day when she was released.  Although no expense would be spared for our dog had we felt more comfortable with another place, I will note that for the same surgery, we ended up paying half of what we would have been charged at City of Angels.

On top of all this, you can talk to a live person 24/7 (which I used almost every day for the first two weeks after she returned home), the front desk staff is patient and knowledgeable, and the place is organized and accountable.

I love my dog more than anyone can imagine.  I can't thank ASEC enough for giving me hope that I won't lose her prematurely and that she won't suffer for the time she is here.

I brought my dog in after she got into a dog-fight and the service was fantastic. They were very kind, the staff took the time to explain my options and were really caring and helpful with my dog.
My dog had a cut on her ear glued, (ear wounds can bleed excessively), and a bite on her leg irrigated. They sent us home with a big E Collar, antibiotics and pain medication. The entire visit took about 3 hours including waiting for her sedation to wear off.
The charge was only $325. Very reasonable for an after hours visit.
I highly recommend this Emergency Center.

Surgeon Dr. Balfour was AWESOME! He could not have been kinder, more patient and professional. He explained the surgery and answered all our questions very kindly, stayed calm and positive even when our newly rescued Rottweiler nipped him in the side, and the surgery was a huge success. Our dog is now running around pain free for the first time in her life. On top, they gave us a huge rescue discount. The entire experience could not have been better.

    Dr. Balfour saved my dog!!

I brought my 13 year old mixed terrier to the vet and a medium sized lump on my dog's rear end, right next to her tail, was found.  The vet suggested the lump be removed because it could be malignant (and sure enough, it was).  Also, if it wasn't removed, it would continue to grow and could affect her pooping.

The vet gave me a list of surgical centers I could take my dog to, but I did my research on these places using yelp and I didn't feel comfortable with taking my dog to any of those places.  So I continued searching for other surgical centers and came across ASEC.  After reading reviews on ASEC, I felt comfortable enough to take my dog there...and I'm glad I did!!  Dr. Balfour performed the surgery.  He was extremely friendly, patient, and assured me that he has done plenty of these surgeries before with positive outcomes.

About 2-3 weeks after my dog got her surgery, she was full of life again!!  She started running, eating, and loving her walks again!!  I was really amazed at the positive outcome of removing her lump.  Before the surgery, she was always lethargic, ate very little, and was becoming really skinny.

The vet was also very impressed with Dr. Balfour's work because it is a difficult area to work on since it could have affected her ability to hold her poop if anything was done wrong.  Dr. Balfour did an amazing job -- my dog has no side-effects and the lump has not grown back.

I would like to also add that the staff at ASEC is very friendly, patient, and loves animals.

THANK YOU DR. BALFOUR AND ASEC STAFF!

First, a warning about Xylitol: EXTREMELY toxic to dogs. Make sure you don't leave packs of Trident or other xylitol containing items around. Which brings me to the reason for my visit to ASEC, which is that our Siberian decided to down at least half a pack of Trident. She wasn't acting strange but we discovered the pack upon coming home and realized what happened, were completely freaked by the legitimate warnings we found online, and took her to ASEC. Sure enough, her blood sugar was low (a symptom of Xylitol poisoning). She stayed the night for monitoring and on IVs and had to come in for follow-up bloodwork 48 hours after injection. We were fortunate that she seemed to handle it well, and besides the low blood sugar, suffered no complications.

As far as ASEC, I have nothing but positive things to say. The vets there are the most competent I have ever talked to, and take the time to speak with you. Do you pay a lot and up front for emergency care? Of course, but we knew that going in. What did surprise me was that when we picked her up the next day, we were refunded $300+ for services that they didn't need to do in the end. In addition, the techs found, removed and cleaned about 8 ticks from a hiking trip a few days before. I never felt pressure to perform anything unnecessary (in fact, to the contrary, I felt pushed to go back to my normal vet for follow-up--I had to fight to get them to do the 48-hour followup bloodwork themselves since we don't have a normal vet yet!). I have even been on the phone with several vets there since to ask about everything from her bloodwork to the tick bites. What other vet would take the time to discuss your dog over the phone, and even discuss issues related to services you didn't pay for (tick bites)? All this while telling you to take your pet elsewhere because they are an emergency and surgery center only!

The people that work here are wonderful.  I've had to bring my cat in for two issues so far (lymphoma and a kidney infection) and they have been amazing.  Dr. Cohen, Dr. Lawler, and Dr. Trivedi are so professional and knowledgeable.  My sister is a vet out of state and agreed with every bit of advice & information that they gave me.  The doctors explained every step of the process to me and took incredible care of my cat.  The techs and the front office staff are all so sweet and kind, and treated my cat as if she were their own.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this facility.

Suggestion to the owners - hire a better front office staff.  I had an appt that i decided to cancel after reading a few of the reviews on here.  The woman who answered the phone in the evening said I would have to call back the next day because she was part of the emergency staff and  'wasnt allowed to touch their books'.  Seriously?

Sorry you'll have a no-show appt tomorrow but Im not wasting time to call back again because you cant trust your staff to take a simple message.  If they're that incompetent then it just reinforces my decision not to come here.

My yorkie was attacked by a coyote two weeks ago and was in really bad shape.  We took her to the Emergency Pet Clinic in El Monte, and they referred us to this place.  Their expertise and round-the-clock care likely saved our dog's life.  Before we brought her there, the doctor from El Monte gave her a 50/50 chance of survival.  But as soon as she got to ASEC, she improved drastically every day and is in full recovery.

ASEC is incredible from the moment you walk in.  They use triage to allow the life-threatening emergencies to be dealt with first.  They took our dog in immediately because she was bandaged and barely able to move, having lost a lot of blood.  Once we sorted out payment and went to the back to say goodbye, we were impressed by the state-of-the-art facility.  It was 4 AM when we left the dog there, and there were probably 2 or 3 doctors on staff as well as 4 or 5 assistants and technicians.  They have all sorts of specialists on hand (radiologists, surgical, etc.) to ensure that your dog gets the best treatment.  Notably, the doctor at El Monte told us that our dog had suffered a protrusion of her left lung lobe, but they had a radiologist look at it and found that it was not.

For the next couple of days, we couldn't make normal visiting hours most of the time (living far away), but as long as we called beforehand and let them know, they would arrange for us to visit at odd hours.  They also welcomed our nervous phone calls.  After their doctors' morning rounds, they call every one of their patients' owners for an update, which you get around 11 A.M.  They would keep us well-updated with her current condition and next steps.

When they discharged her for care at home, the doctors were also extremely helpful with our many phone calls.  I probably called them about four times a day in the early going to ask about procedures to administer medicine, different problems I was experiencing with her, and the like, but they were never anything but helpful and courteous.  All of the doctors I spoke with were very familiar with her situation, and their willingness to make themselves available has contributed to a lot of peace of mind and good care for my dog.

Of course, many Yelpers have complained about the price.  Our dog was in a true life-threatening situation and stayed at ASEC (until she could eat on her own) for about 6 days.  Total bill: over $9000!  The bulk of this was hospitalization fees, the price you pay for having a doctor monitor your animal 24 hours a day, x-rays, fluids, blood tests, and blood transfusions.  ASEC is one of the rare specialist animal hospitals around that have blood transfusions on hand for injured animals.  For my dog, one of the vets volunteered his Rottweiler for blood donation and she saw marked improvement after receiving the blood.

The bottom line on the money spent  is that if you're just kind of freaking out about something that your animal might've eaten, or is acting funny, you'll find that  this is a very expensive hospital.  But if your animal is definitely on the verge of death, and you're in "spare no expense" mode to save a member of your family, you can rest assured that ASEC will do everything in their power to make sure your pet receives the best possible treatment.  I also felt as though when we brought up the financial issues to them, they made every effort to save us money where they could (i.e. optional treatments, trying to get her out of there as soon as possible, etc.).

All in all, ASEC saved my dog's life and I'm forever grateful.  If your animal has an emergency and you need someone to save him or her, ASEC is the place to go.

Pro: Open 24 hours for emergencies
Con: Vet staff is not terribly knowledgeable about exotics. Pricey.

When the guinea pig you are taking care of has her internal organs hanging outside her body that qualifies as an emergency. Dr. Horowitz tried his best to help us even though he let us know he was not very experienced with piggies.

Our dilemma was that even with the extensive pricey tests he suggested, it would only identify which body part was prolapsed outside the body. They suggested the actual surgery to be done by an experienced exotics vet, so the poor piggie would have to wait until VCA opened in the morning. We ended up skipping the tests (avoiding mucho stress on the already exhausted gippy) and going with antibiotics to fight infection, pain medication, and sterile lubricant to apply to the fragile tissue.

I was frightened, the pig was frightened, Dr. H was valiantly attempting to find a solution. At the time I was frustrated because they couldn't do much for her, but I did appreciate their honesty regarding their lack of experience with guinea pig surgery. However if you have a dog or cat that has an intestinal problem, Dr. H is your man apparently.*

The bill was steep, but it IS an emergency center. The staff was also kind enough to check in with the next day to follow up. Exotic pet owners: this is the only emergency vet who will see exotics on the westside. We were fortunate that (medicated) Naomi made it til morning for surgery, if the situation called for immediate action we would have been left scrambling to find a vet in another area pronto. Have a back-up ER vet plan.

    * His words, not mine. I'll keep that in mind if/when I get a dog.

A bottle of digoxin they charged me 90+ dollars is only 22 dollars at a local pharmacy.

they said maximum I would have to pay is 1700 dollars but I ended up paying 2300 dollars.

Looking back, I just feel completely cheated but I had to at the time because I was hysterical at the thought of losing my baby.

They prey on soft-hearted animal loving suckers like myself.  Despicable if you asked me.  Be aware.

I can't say all are bad there because  there are so many doctors/technicians/staff.   But the above was my experience and I had to share.

I give this place 5 stars because I took my precious little girl cat to the ER on a Friday night after noticing labored breathing.  My husband and I were extremely worried not only about our little girl, but the costs associated with trying to figure out what was wrong.

Dr. Helen Sindell, helped us that night, and she was amazing given the circumstances. My husband and I couldn't stress enough how we could not afford to do many things to determine a 100% accurate diagnosis, but the Dr. helped us out and didn't try to do all these costly tests.

In the end, she helped us out by making sure our cat was Ok'd to take home and to take to our primary vet the next morning. We are still waiting for lab results to come back with definitive answers, but we really appreciate everything ASEC did for us.  We left feeling like this hospital really cares about your pet and wants to do everything they can to help make them better WITHOUT forcing these costly bills.

My husband and I plan on getting pet insurance, just so we can take our cat to this hospital from now on.

I have full confidence that should my puppy encounter another emergency, I would feel perfectly comfortable taking him here. It's just SOOO expensive!!! I brought my dog here because he ate a chunk of mushed up bully stick and it was blocking his stomach.

My regular vet should have been able to take care of it but she was closing early that day and sent me here. You start racking up fees the moment you step in here, beginning with the $100+ visitation fee. Then each x-ray is about $200 and add to that a bunch of tests. I think my bill was around $600-$700 for the few hours I spent there.

ASEC's Dr. Horowitz was the best. He understood my situation and really worked with me through my panic. At first he wanted to keep my puppy for observation and periodic x-rays but I didn't want to keep paying $200 per x-ray if we were just going to pretty much wait and see how his physical situation progressed regardless of what the x-ray showed.

Dr. Horowitz explained the purpose of each test to me and we narrowed it down to the most crucial ones that rule out more serious problems. Then he let me take my puppy home for observation and told me that I could bring him back whenever his situation deteriorated. I felt much better after that consultation and I'm pretty sure Dr. Horowitz reduced my fee because I was freaking out so much. He was really such a lifesaver :)

To all the pet parents out there - take necessary precautions but trust your instincts. They wanted to keep my puppy overnight for observation ($1200 per night) but I knew that he would be petrified to stay and also something told me that he might be able to pass that blockage on his own. If you feel that something is best for your baby, even if it's contrary to the recommendations of the doctors, don't be afraid to go with your gut. You can always bring him/her back immediately if necessary.

DO NOT GO TO THIS HOSPITAL!  I hope that no one has to experience what I went through so if sharing this helps someone else to not re live my experience, then writing this is worth it.

I applied for their useless Wells Fargo medical card that no one else takes in case my dog ended up having complications with her pregnancy.  Sure enough, everything went smooth until the last puppy wouldn't come out.  I called over and over and they kept telling me to wait for her to try to push it out up to 4 hrs and didn't even bother to really listen to what was going on with my dog.  After waiting a few hrs I couldn't see my dog suffer so I brought her in anyway.

It was after hours emergency so no other clients were their but several staff members.  One man came in and they stuck him in a room and said it will be a long wait!  HELLO?  It is called emergency and they were not having to help anyone at the moment but me since I came in first.  They showed no regard for my dog's or puppy's well being.  A nurse placed my new born puppies on the table like objects without any care to making sure they were warm enough etc.  (They should know how fragile tiny Chihuahuas are to begin with).

After her torturing my dog who had half a puppy sticking out for an additional two hours at their clinic, she decided my dog needed a $4000 c section surgery.  She then preceded to tell me she needs me to fill out more paperwork before she can't even call the surgeon until this was done.  I had a friend on the phone who asked her nicely to speed up the process, that I had the money and this isn't right keeping my dog in this condition with crying puppies for this long!  Did I mention that the doctor didn't care that the puppies were kept in a cold place by themselves unfed?  She also tried to charge me for puppy nursing care as if I couldn't do it myself and kept my dog away from them refusing to take a stupid cone off my dog's head so she didn't hurt the puppies when I asked her to keep them together.

She (KimMi Whitehead) then took it personally that we were unsatisfied with the treatment as we had very good reasons to be, and sent us out the door!  Even though at that hour it was our only option to save the puppy!  She threw me out...with the puppy still hanging halfway out of my dog and refused to even listen to me try to apologize begging her to put her issues aside to save my dog since she is suppose to be an animal loving vet and I had done nothing wrong!

She refused to even talk to me so I ended up having to drive my dog in that condition half an hour out of the way to another hospital which would charge me even more.  No one really seems to care about pets, only money!  Guess what?  The other place at least had no problem getting the puppy out without a c section but by then after hours of torture it was pulled out dead!  (KimMi Whitehead) had killed my puppy and almost my dog.  I don't think she should be practicing since she decides to withhold life saving service to people who decide to get concerned when they are not being treated fairly and are afraid for their pet.  She then holds a grudge and refuses to save the animal even when the client offers to apologize without reason just to save their pet.

After I tried calling the hospital the next day to complain, they refused to talk to me and said they could not discuss the case with me.  And also said they might still be charging for the service!

When my regular vet suggested we go here I wasn't sure what to expect. The staff here was caring for both the animal and the people. The space was clean and they had chairs for the humans to sit on versus a cold hard bench.

Dr. Yoo was knowledgeable and helpful and compassionate during this hard time. I asked for him to be honest and frank with me and he was, but he was still gentle with his words. He updated me the moment things changed with my cat and helped make the hard decision to put down my cat easier (is there such a thing?).

We brought our cat in the day after we got her spayed because she had ripped out one of her stitches.  It was close to midnight and ASEC was the first place we found that was open.

We came in with our cat, they asked what happened and immediately took her in to have her looked at while we got started on paperwork.  The tech kept checking in with us and giving us updates, which we appreciated.  A few minutes later the doctor came in and clearly explained our options with how to move forward.  In the end we opted for stronger pain meds and a larger cone.

I was really pleased with how attentive they were to us the second we walked in and am relieved to know that they are around should another emergency arise with our cat.

We brought Lily, our dog in, twice in a week.  When she swallowed something bad, the hospital was quick and business-like.
She was attacked by coyotes three days later, and they were attentive, and did everything to help her.  Lily spent about 24 hours there, and ASEC was great about providing information, and did a great job with the dog, who is now back home with us.
If you have a pet emergency, I highly recommend ASEC.
Be warned, however; they ain't cheap.

I just wrote a really long and nice review, and then it got lost somehow. Boo.

To sum up, I was sick when I took my cat in very late on a Friday night. But the staff - esp Dr. Edstrom - was fantastic, and I felt very comfortable with the level of care I received. And while the cost is high, I'm okay with paying more at 1 am on the weekend.

The little furball is doing just fine now, and while I hope I never have to go back, I feel confident that if I do, he'll get the best of care.

Had to take my dog Lucy, there after a bad allergic reaction.

Every singe person we encountered was a pleasure to deal with.

The tech listened carefully as we explained her symptoms and when we met with the vet, Dr. Yamamoto, it couldn't have been a better experience. She asked several questions as she recorded our pet's health history. Thankfully, Lucy only needed a shot. While we waited for her, the staff at the front desk was so nice and pleasant to be around.

Thanks for making a stressful situation, manageable.

This place is superb. You can rest assured that, if you go here, you're receiving premiere care for your pets. Moreover, they offer immediate, extraordinary help from supremely qualified people, day or night, weekday or weekend.

As noted by other Yelpers, the service can be expensive, though I've never felt extorted by overcharging, as I have at a few other veterinary hospitals and clinics. In contrast, this place runs everything by you, step-by-step, for your pre-approval, and, within each step, they've always offered me the choice of treatment options, ranging from non-treatment to the most state-of-the-art, high-tech procedures.

Case in point: A couple of nights ago I saw Dr. Kramer at around 11pm with my younger dog, who had an emergent back problem. Dr. Kramer was warm, knowledgeable, informative (without ever being condescending), and skilled in examining my dog as swiftly and painlessly as possible. Like the incredibly kind tech who prepped us for her, Dr. Kramer was also very sensitive to my dog's pain, anxiety, and nervousness, calming her continuously with words and caresses while evaluating and treating her. Dr. K also patiently answered all of my questions with clear, frank answers, which I very much appreciated. The administrators at the front desk were equally patient and helpful, which is a relief during the check-in and check-out process, when you're both anxious to be seen and anxious to get your beloved pet home!

Of note, that same dog of mine also had emergent back surgery here almost three years ago with Dr. Thunberg. That surgery saved her life, and that's why we continue to go to ASEC, even though we live way across town on the east side of LA!

This review concerns emergency care for birds/exotics.

We took our bird here when she was having trouble laying an egg after hours when her normal avian vet at Wilshire Animal Hospital was not available. WAH refers people with birds and exotics here when they need emergency after-hours care. But when it comes to birds and exotics, there is a big difference between the willingness to see them and competency to handle them. Still, it wasn't like we had lots of options.

Ultimately, they x-rayed to confirm the presence of an egg, then they gave our bird injections of calcium, vitamins and fluids and we took her home to see if she would lay the egg over night with some extra heat and humidity in the cage. She didn't and her regular vet ended up removing the egg the next day. Still, giving the injections and waiting over night before intervening was the right thing to do. So overall, ASEC administered the right emergency care. No complaints there.

Still, there were serious gaps in the quality of care that stem specifically from the fact that they confiscate your animal once treatment has begun. I understand this is to ensure payment, but they are literally taking your pet hostage.  Its a problem when it comes to birds and certainly many exotics, because the stress factor alone is so bad for their health, and because you may know your pet better than any vet there. Just to demonstrate:

    1. The Dr. at ASEC performed a physical exam after our bird had been confiscated, but he wouldn't touch her before. So A) we don't know if he did a physical exam at all;  B) we don't know if he did it properly and C) her treatment was seriously delayed because he waited until he had her locked away from us before he would even touch her. We have seen a proper exam many times, but we were not present for this exam, so who knows what, if anything, was done. But even if it was done properly, precious time was lost in the hostage-taking.

    2. He took an X-Ray to confirm the presence of an egg, but he did not show us the x-ray.  This appeared to be because it was on a computer in the back, where our bird was. We did get a copy of the xray after payment.

    3. IT TOOK FOREVER before they gave her the injections and then even longer before they allowed us to pay to get her back. This was bad  - very, very bad. Our bird is in the middle of difficult labor, and they are just taking their sweet time. Normally, we would at least be able to wait with our bird, and we can pet her, cuddle her, talk to her . . . reduce the stress of being in a weird place and mitigate the manhandling by strangers. But as it was, she was just in prison for an hour or so for no apparent reason. Added stress makes it even less likely that she will lay the egg naturally, and ultimately she didn't.

As for as costs were concerned, the x-ray and injections seemed on par with what we would have paid at WAH, but the exam cost twice as much, which is funny since that is the only thing we cannot confirm actually happened. The Dr. wanted to keep our bird overnight to ensure proper heat and humidity and "supportive care" but we vetoed that. While they may be able to keep ideal heat and humidity levels in a way we can't at home, we believe those benefits would have been offset by the stress of being in a foreign environment. So we took her home and gave her the best sauna we could in her comfortable home, with all of her favorite toys and healthy food. There was no way we were paying $500 for them to stress our bird out any more than she already was.

The next day when we took her to her normal avian vet and the drama continued, but our vet confirmed that the injections and over night wait were appropriate, and that we were right to just bring her home and do our best to raise heat and humidity to give her 12 hours to try to leg the egg herself. Since that didn't happen, it was probably even more important that she had the injections, so all is well that ends well.

Based on our experience at ASEC, we would probably take our bird here again in an emergency, but I will definitely raise a lot of hell the entire time, to try to get them to act quickly, and get some kind of indication that they are handling our bird properly. Then again, we are putting an end to the egg-laying and will do our best to make sure that we are not in an emergency situation after-hours ever again!

This is the ONLY place I'll ever consider taking my cats in an Emergency in LA, ever. They were fast, competent as hell, very kind, and have literally every single resource available to them to save your pet. I'm not kidding, they have a CT scanner, onsite lab, pet oncologists and cardiologists, all available, 24/7/365. They are a little pricey, but I felt like they probably saved me thousands of dollars because of what they could do and the tools they had onsite. Cat needs endoscopy? They can do it, stat. It's the Cedars Sinai of pet hospitals. I have these people on speed dial after today, after just one visit. I called ahead, and once I walked in, my cat was seen by a Vet in about 3 minutes. Human hospitals can't do that in the US. I'd say they are a little pricey, but you have the option of so many cheaper procedures here they can do, it probably evens out in the long run. Also, I was given clear choices, options and potential consequences, and never, ever a sales pitch. These people really CARE about what is best and not what is profitable. Blown away! My kitty says thanks ASEC!

Review, and Full Disclosure : this review is based on treatment that took place three years ago, and is largely attributable to one incompetent vet (a middle-aged heftier woman who may or may not still be there). Nonetheless I have attempted to relate a fair account of our experience with ASEC, and feel it bears sharing to the Yelp community. Forgive the emotions.

Our 12-week-old puppy was brought in the day after a night at the Animal Emergency Center in Studio City (they are GREAT, by the way). Our pup had refused to stand, wouldn't eat, and was whimpering in generalized pain. AEC stabilized the pup and ran some diagnostics that were ready by the time we took our dog to ASEC the next morning.

The ASEC doctor assigned to us, said woman described above, pushed several expensive diagnostics that yielded nothing and put our puppy in even more pain (example: an endoscopy based on a stomach x-ray misread by this vet. How can you think an empty stomach looks like one with a (turned out to be phantom) "sock" in it?). Being emotionally vulnerable and feeling entirely accountable for this young life, we just wanted our dog to get better - so of course we were talked into pricey tests.

The next day, the puppy was no better, but the vet tried to stand him up on his legs while he yelped in pain and quivered. "See?" she told my husband. "He's better, he can stand!" My husband hit the roof. Nuclear, I tell you.

A younger female vet came in, the older vet scared off, and confided that she'd had a hunch as to what our puppy had, but due to politics, couldn't successfully challenge her boss...

Based on the young woman's diagnosis, which came from her personal experience with similar breeds of dogs to ours (the diagnosis was a serious joint-based autoimmune reaction to his 3rd round of puppy vaccines, and not a GI issue as first vet thought) our dog was treated with cortisone IV and made progress "out of the woods" in hours. Note that IV cortisone is cheap...and no further diagnostics were necessary. The puppy was released, nearly good as new, the next day.

We were (and three years later, still are) incredibly upset at the $4000 bill and the senseless pain and suffering from useless diagnostics that they gave our puppy. To their credit, understanding they'd made a gigantic f-up, they cut our bill in half and apologized. But still.

While the young vet was absolutely fantastic, and fortunately our puppy made a full recovery, the senior staff at ASEC seemed more concerned with racking up expensive diagnostic fees then listening to a junior vet who could solve the problem quickly and efficiently.

Christmas Day: my girlfriend and I go to her father's family's place for Christmas dinner and festivities in Santa Maria. We put Raka (our 5.5 month old chocolate lab/pit bull) puppy in the backyard with another older Lab. We were nervous because there was a pool in the back, and Raka didn't know how to swim while the other dog did. We checked on Raka (it was raining and dark) often but when it was time to distribute gifts- we didn't check on him for more than an hour. I had a nervous feeling and when I went out there- the other Lab was by the door looking at me concerningly and Raka was holding on for dear life in the pool. I pulled him out and he ran into the doghouse and wouldn't come out. We wrapped him in a blanket and raced back to Los Angeles. It wasn't that I didn't trust urgent care in Santa Maria, but I live in Los Angeles and I know that there were more choices in Los Angeles.

Looking on Yelp! we found this place which was close to where I lived. My girlfriend held our puppy close for the 3 hour drive back in the rain all the way to L.A. I'm a physician so I know that he was going into pulmonary edema because he was holding his nose straight in the ear and was hacking up frothy pink sputum. We arrived to ASEC and they took him in right away. They quickly assessed him and the resident vet was very informative. They put him in the dog ICU in the oxygen tank. He was on a high percentage of oxygen, X-rays showed edema, and outlined the plan for us. They rounded in the morning, and answered all the questions I had and even listened to me on some ideas for treatment for pulmonary edema.

Overall, Raka was in the ICU for about 36 hours and he was able to come home. If it wasn't for the excellent doctors and staff at ASEC, we would have more than likely have lost Raka that night instead of him sitting by my feet, chewing on his rawhide, as I write this review. They are expensive but they use the latest technology and amazing specialist to offer the best medical care- as I would say the UCLA Hospital for pets. I will always be grateful for them.

I will never go to ASEC again, and if you care about your pet and how you are treated as well, you won't go there either.    I brought my dog in who was savagely attacked by a coyote, and was brought into a room after they took my dog back to be looked at.  The doctor on call (Dr. McMann). told me she would have to operate on my dog whenever she could based on the other emergencies which may come in, though I saw no one else in the waiting area.  It was approximately 5 hours later my dog was operated on, who was bleeding profusely with multiple bites and open flesh wounds hanging out of my dog on both sides of her body.  I asked the Dr. if she was going to give her an antibiotic shot for infection.  She refused, and told me bites never cause an infection.  No matter what I asked of her she disagreed and refused, and told me my dog would be fine,  and that she knew it all!!  I guess it must be great to be just out of veterinary school and know everything.   This was $3200.00 or more dollars ago.
After bringing her home from surgery, with multiple holes in her, and drain tubes hanging out of her, while on the antibiotic the doctor orally prescribed, she developed a high fever.  I called ASec, and spoke with Dr. Mcmann, who at first told me it was all fine.  I wanted to bring her in, and was told by this Dr. that she would not give her any intervenous drugs,  only IV fluids.  My dog worsened, and I brought her in multiple times that week.   The Dr. finally supposedly gave her antibiotics, then accused me  of abusing antibiotics, after my own vet had me add another antibiotic.

I then confronted her and asked her whether she would let my dog die rather then give an antibiotic.  My dog was hospitalized a day and a half,  for another $1600.00, and was given an antibiotic shot of the same class she was already on which did nothing.   I asked her to culture the wounds which were now infected and had absessed, even though she stated emphatically a bite does not cause an infection!!  She however ignored my request, and the next Dr. also an intern did the culture.

No one from that hospital ever called me to give me my results, and I had to call multiple times to find out the information.  It turned out my dog has MERSA, a serious staff infection, which no one bothered to let me know.  The same Dr. got on the phone after I waited fifteen minutes on hold from the front desk..

This Dr. again began to lecture me on the use of antibiotics which had nothing to do with my need for my dog's culture results and her well being, as she is sick and severely infected.   She then began to talk in a rude and condescending manner and told me the results had been faxed to my vet.  I told her I didn't think my vet had the results, as he called me tell me to phone ASEC for the results.,  She then treated me with such disrespect that I couldn't believe I was talking to a professional.  I then asked for my dog's culture results, and she refused and said I couldn't have them, as she thought I would treat the dog my self!  REALLY IS THAT WHY I JUST SPENT ALMOST FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS.!!  I then informed her that she must give me what I ask for  because she obviously does not know the laws on giving a client/patient their own record.  She then changed her tune, and said oh then come and get it.  She then yelled at me about when I was coming!

BY THE WAY::  If your dog is dying or need of emergency care, they have you sign a form, with an estimate and pay in advance before they will do any treatment on your animal.  I find this disgusting.  When you come to an emergency hospital for your beloved pet, it is usually very emotionally upsetting, and this hospital takes advantage and only adds to the stress that is already taking place.

They really don't care about you or your pet, only your money.  Do yourself a favor, go somewhere else.
