Review from Jessica C.

I'm with the consensus here. The management staff is great and very helpful in addition to the doormen. I've enjoyed my stay here thus far. Yes, there are Section 8 tenets but they're harmless. Actually, most are families and normally friendly. It's nice to get a change of pace from the usual. If you think about it, the background check, credit check is the same for everyone. If you don't pass, you don't get an apartment.
They don't tell you the building is Section 8 unless you ask.. because.. It's against the law! How interesting that people make assumptions when they don't bother to gather the facts. Do your research and stop blaming your ignorance.
Also, the apartments are VERY quiet - one of the main reasons I rented here. Each unit it surrounded by 2 feet of cement. I can never hear my neighbors or any other noise in the hallway.
The apartments are gorgeous, very clean when you first move in. Asbury is equipped with a 24 door man, a pool, fitness center, on site laundry, and a dry cleaners - not to mention the view you get from your apartment (on the higher floors of course). If you work in the Loop, it's literally a 20 minute walk! Great restaurants and bars everywhere. -

Okay I'm going to begin this review saying the only positive things that I can... then I will move on to my rant!
When I was looking to move, I wanted a place that was near the Loop and close to the Red and Brown line. I lived in the Gold Coast area for three years and I actually loved the area. When I went to see Asbury it was in the middle of the week and early morning, so there was not a lot of foot traffic around the building and I saw no tenants. The layout of the apartment was great. In the beginning, I met with the Office Manager and signed my lease. They promised to change the carpets and paint the walls (as required by Chicago ordinances). They also promised me there were no dogs in the buildings and the building had a policy to limit the amount of cats and assigned specific cat-friendly floors. My boyfriend has awful allergies and we did not want a pet-friendly building. When I picked up my keys and went inside my apartment, it was clear they had changed the carpets and they cleaned the bathroom, however only the bedroom was freshly painted. I went to the office immediately to inform them that there were black marks (probably from moving furniture) and they insisted they had painted the walls in the living room. I let it go... this is where are all the positive thoughts end and I begin describing the craziness in this dump!
My first complaint is the office, they are not nice, they are not polite, but they are incompetent. First, every week there is an issue with our water being turned on, the office continues to allege that they are changing the pipes. How can you be changing the pipes for six months? Each week either they shut off the water for a day between 10AM-4PM or there is NO hot water. Not supplying tenants with hot water is a violation of the housing code. I called the office to ask questions and they literally stopped taking my calls. I still live like I'm gambling - there may or may not be hot water. Secondly, they shut off the air conditioner in the middle of August without any notice. I called the office and surprise, surprise - they didn't take my call. I immediately went downstairs and they stated "we don't have to notify you about anything." I am still living without an air conditioner. Thirdly, if you want to take a hot shower (when that actually happens) you cannot make it too hot because the smoke alarm is not in the kitchen, but two feet away from the bathroom door! Pure genius whoever decided on that one! Fourthly, if you own a bike the office makes you fill out a lot of paperwork and they have rules, however no one follows them and the bike room looks like an accident that "1,000 Ways to Die" will later air. Additionally, although the office promised me that they had strict rules about animals - there are no restrictions. There are a lot of cats on every floor and I actually live on the same floor as a huge Labrador. While the Labrador is a service animal, the office should have been honest with me!
Let's move on to the tenants. Tenants are allowed to sign in as many guests as they want, and unfortunately there is a lot of commotion on EVERY floor especially on the weekends. Also, if you want to do laundry then you have to become a vampire and do it between 1AM - 4AM or you can only do one load at a time. Finally, if you are looking for a place to walk around or decompress after work - don't move here. If you don't believe me, then come and make an appointment at 5:00PM when you might get accosted on the street by the crackheads, wait an hour on the elevator, and look at the pond-size pool. DO NOT MOVE HERE! -

The service is bad. They failed to fix the elevator for more than 4 months and found any excuses they can to cover their inability.
You will see cockroaches over summer times in lobby and alley. When you inform the manager, she would deny and told you that those are water bugs (what the hell are that?)
They will try to increase your rent every year despite the fact that they fail to maintain the building in good shape........ -

This place is the dirtiest building I have ever seen. First week I lived here I found a cockroach in my sink. I told the doorman and he acted like it was no big deal. Many units are Section 8 housing. Tenants are loud, rude, and UNCLEAN. This building is right by the YMCA and feels a little dangerous at night. Lived here a year and couldn't wait to get out! Gross, Gross, Gross, Gross.

I'm living here since September and i have to say I love it. Good neighborhood, close to everything that i need. 2 zip cars in the building, which is good cause i dont have a car of my own. My apartment is clean, and has a good layout, very spacious for a studio. The doormen are really nice, and i have a great view, with a basic inhouse gym its pretty perfect for me!

The staff here is super nice and helpful! They don't hesitate to show you around the entire building and help you decide if Asbury is the place for you... The apartments are gorgeous as well and the building is in a great location for anybody who wants to live in the heart of Chicago!

I'm pretty much in agreement with Ren H. I've lived here for several years and it's true that the staff, especially the doormen, are so very nice and it's certainly what you need to see when you walk out the door or in the door for the evening. The location is great, although sometimes that's a backfall particularly because the YMCA is kitty corner and they can get a bit rambunctious and noisy at times, but no real problems. Mostly the noise is from the Ambulances and Fire Trucks. Asbury is on a major intersection where traffic to and from Northwestern Hospital and the Firehouse on Dearborn is constant. This would be ok except for the sliding doors in the apartment don't have any soundproofing. Otherwise, it's a great place to live and there are a lot worse things to deal with in city living so I'm happy!

ASBURY PLAZA HAS THE MOST INCOMPETENT STAFF EVER! First, the model apartment does not look a thing like the real apartments. My initial contact was a young girl by whom I was conned into thinking that "the apartments will look exactly like what you see in the model AND that my apartment was in the process of being remodeled so it would all be brand new." NOT TRUE AT ALL!! The appliances are old and don't match. The carpeting is only changed every 3 years and the woodwork and finishes look cheap, not to mention the layouts are awkward for most normal furniture. My application had been approved and I intended on moving in...but thank god I found a better option....I was asked to fill out an application and pay the $500 security deposit upfront. The check was cashed before my application was even approved. Weeks went by and I made arrangements to move in. By a stroke of luck, I called the office one day to ask about signing the official lease as my move in date was approaching and no one had contacted me about moving in. I spoke with an older gentleman there, who informed me that there were no apartments currently being remodeled and apologized on the "misinformed" girl's behalf. Then I learned that she denied ever saying anything like what I was told...not to mention that she never acknowledged her mistakes by apologizing directly to me and for the predicament she put me in (which was homeless 2 weeks before my current lease was up). So I asked to see the actual apartment that I would be renting, but due to the company's policy that no one is allowed entrance without the tenants permission and the tenant is allowed to say No, it was very difficult to get in unlike most other buildings. I finally got into the apartment, it was horrendous, esp. the tub. He showed me another option, just as bad. I was running out of time and needed to make a decision within the next few days. It was Wednesday and I said I'd decide by Friday so long as I could find out if I could move in a few days early and if the carpeting would be changed. I was promised that a colleague would call me and let me know by Thursday. Friday rolled around and still NO phone call. I called on Saturday and she TOLD ME, to contact a manager to find out..no apology offered either for dropping the ball. I had a suspicion but never informed that the building was a section 8 housing either. Then, luckily my senses told me to take another place, so I called to cancel my application. My general consensus based on most other reviews I have read is that I was saved from a living hell only to have to deal with what's turned into another AZBURY PLAZA nightmare. Three weeks went by and my desosit had not been returned, so I called the office. Apparently, this same incompetent person never processed the paper work for the deposit to be returned. After initiating many follow-up calls, I was told by another staff member that the process was finally initiated and promised it would be sent in 5-10 days, 5 weeks went by. It was now 8 weeks later and still NO CHECK! I called to inquire. I was told they'd look into it and would be called the next day. Guess what? NO FOLLOW-UP. so i had to call again. The staff confirmed that the check had been cut but never asked me where to send the check (DUH!!! I was moving so of course it wouldn't make sense to send the check to the address listed on my application). Oddly, when I asked if they were going to stop payment on the first check and reissue a new one, i could not get a straight answer, which leads me to believe that the check was never issued in the first place. Anyhow..I will wait a few days to see if my deposit finally arrives to my new address...but I have my doubts. If you have any sense at all, DO NOT EVER GET INVOLVED WITH THE HABITAT COMPANY AND DO NOT EVEN WAISTE YOUR TIME WITH AZBURY PLAZA.
