Review from Peter T.
Anaheim, CA
One of the best sushi places I've eaten at ever. Does get busy on the weekends, but what sushi joint doesn't? Extremely friendly staff with great customer service.
I have brought my family of 14 there and thought that they might be slow getting our food ordered and brought to us. I was wrong. The waitresses had it on lock. After ordering, on a crowded Saturday evening, we got all our food within 15 minutes. How awesome!!
Thumbs up for this one! -
Review from Fiona D.
Decent sushi and other fare, but overall I was underwhelmed by this place.
I only came here once with my family and they had all been several times before with nothing but good things to say.
First off, I ordered a soda which was a huge mistake because it might as well have been brown water. Completely flat without any hint of effervescence, already a bad start.
We ordered a couple sushi rolls which were good but I think you'd have to being trying really hard just to mess up something basic like a California or Spicy Tuna roll. They were a bit on the small side but overall not so bad.
For our meal, I was having a hard time deciding but since a majority of the table went with the pepper steak, it sounded so good and I was so hungry that I just went with it. It had been a long time since I'd had a nice pepper steak anyway so I was pretty excited.
Every meal comes with a salad and miso soup to start out. The miso soup had a very fishy flavor that wasn't very pleasant and the salad was just basic field greens with some blah dressing. This meal already seemed to be going down a pretty disappointing path...
Once our food finally arrived, I found out that I could not have been more wrong about this steak. I understand that it's called pepper steak, but this really should have just been called pepper because it is literally the only thing you can taste. The flavor was so overwhelming that it became hard to eat since it was so overly spiced. It also didn't help that the steak was so thin there wasn't much to play down the pepper in the first place! I tried to eat it with the rice to try and tone it down, but seriously it was just pepper, pepper and more pepper. Bleh.
I also didn't really appreciate the random chunks of dried garlic thrown on top. Most of them ended up getting stuck in my teeth since the texture was a strange mix of chewy and crunchy. As much as I love garlic, the last thing these little pre-sliced pieces of steak needed was more seasoning. Clearly this place has never heard of 'less is more'.
My brother and my mom were the only ones to get something besides the pepper and their food looked pretty good, but I just couldn't see a reason to come back to this place when there are a lot of other Japanese joints much closer (and much better!)
Wouldn't come back to this place again if I had the choice. -

Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
Location for View - 5 Stars
Food - 2 Starts
Service - 2.5 Stars
Another so-so place in Palos Verdes which has so much Possibilities. I was disappointed in sushi selection. Rolls were good. Nigiri Sushi was sub-par. All the fish was pre-cut and sort of watery. Perfect for those wannabe sushi connoisseurs, since they don't know.
There were a lot of servers and high turn rate at the restaurant but looks like most people were ordering tempura and teryaki. If you are looking for those items this place is not bad. Nigiri Sushi probably not, Americanized Rolls Sushi why not they are tasty.
Would I come again... Sure if Miura took over so I can watch the sunset. -
Review from Justin L.
Stockton, CA
The view is amazing at this place, we were able to see the sunset on a clear coastal day from our indoor table. The sushi was pretty good too! It was very fresh and tasty! The service was decent and ambience is wonderful. However, they need more than just one restroom for the whole place. At least two or more would do. I would come back here again just to enjoy the beautiful ocean view.

Good stuff, but can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights. Plan to wait a bit for a seat. Enjoy the view!

Had lunch here again today, the view always gets me. It can get brisk, so bring a jacket. Food/sushi is solid, service is OK, but... the view is priceless.

Los Angeles, CA
My boyfriend brought me here because he thought I'd enjoy the view ... and I did. Absolutely beautiful!
But the food, eh, it was okay. We had a couple sushi rolls and they were on the mediocre side. I also had the clam soup with miso base, and it was pretty salty. My boyfriend had an entree that he enjoyed ... I had the avocado tuna salad and that was also okay. It's too bad the food isn't better because I could imagine they'd have a line out the door with this incredible view. The service was great, however. So, they get an extra star for service and location. -

This place opened my eyes to sushi. Love it an usually get some sort of tempura. The service is not amazing but it doesn't take away from amazing food with an amazing view.

Review from Skye W.
This is probably one of the worst japanese places I've been to.
First the service is kind of wishy washy and inattentive. You think that is bad until you have the food. I got the sushi lunch special with 2 pieces of salmon and 2 pieces of tuna, it came with rice and chicken katsu. The sushi was like the boxed sushi you get at Whole Foods. The chicken katsu was the wimpiest piece of chicken I've ever seen. I would be embarrassed to even serve it.
The way I would describe this place is like supermarket sushi on a plate.
Just go to Trader Joe's and get a pre packaged salad. -

The sushi here is passable. The location and view are really the selling points here though, sitting at the bar enjoying a nice Sapporo while the sun sets is a pretty fantastic experience.

Eh....this place is underwhelming. I've been here several times and hate going here just because it is the closest sushi joint to my house. I would rather go to the Admiral Risty every time.
The food is just decent, they overload everything with their spicy sauce (read: spicy mayo), and the quality of the fish leaves much to be desired. They have cheap specials on their sushi, but it's kind of obvious why. -
Review from Joan S.
On my first visit to Asaka (for lunch) today, I discovered it to be an immaculate, friendly, attractive restaurant, reasonably-priced, with great ocean views from the outdoor patio. http://static1.px.yelp...
I'm no expert on Japanese food, but there wasn't anything on my plate I didn't like, and that's good enough for me.
I had the Tempura Bento, $9.95. http://static1.px.yelp...
It came with rice & miso soup, but I had a taste for salad, so paid a dollar extra for a salad in lieu of the soup. http://static1.px.yelp...
What's that white rice doing there? I forgot to specify brown rice, shame on me.
There were supposed to be 4 veggie tempura, but I think I got 6...cool.
Plus 2 shrimp tempura, which were outstanding.
The beef teriyaki was great, too (you have a choice of beef or chicken).
I wasn't sure what that delicious scoop of ground-up white stuff was, tasted like potato with perhaps cucumber...so I asked. It was potato salad (yes, I felt foolish...haha). I tell ya, it was wonderful.
Next visit I'll forget the rice entirely and get more potato salad. (You can take the girl out of the Midwest, but you can't take the Midwest outta the girl.)
All-in-all...perfect lunch in lovely surroundings with easy parking, on a beautiful weather day. Life is good.Listed in: Nicer Restaurants, Japanese Restaurants,…

Review from Yuki M.
Drove up to enjoy coffee and a view at the Starbucks next door and decided to get lunch. It was either sushi or Subway so clearly....
As far as sushi goes in the PV area, Asaka is a pleasant surprise in that it doesn't completely make you want to cry; however, in terms of good sushi in general, Asaka is on the mediocre side. Granted that the South Bay is well within a hair's breath, but I was hungry and wanted to try something new...with a view.
Over-priced mediocrity is not my idea of a pragmatic expenditure, but what's pragmatic about sushi on a whim?
The view was worth the bill. Everything else made Subway look mighty inviting considering the fact that Subway had the same patio and thus, the same view. Subway with an ocean view? Budget whale watching at it's finest.
What was I talking about?
Sushi in general was decent, though I can't say it was anything more than that. Service was also just another check mark on the to-have list of any restaurant.
Sashimi salad was VERY generous. Well within the boundaries to feed 3 individuals. Assorted sashimi (yellowtail, tuna, salmon) was a bit on the pulped side and far from firm, but flavor was enough to not require a heavy dressing.
Salmon Skin handroll was unimpressive. Though I have no clue what a proper one of these should taste like, I would assume that for a five-dollar-mouthful, it should taste better than day old rice and dried leftover salmon.
Eel and Cucumber roll was smothered in sauce. It might as well have been soy sauce risotto.
Double Halibut roll was pleasant but lacked spark. The halibut was dried around the edges and pink in color. I expected an opaque white. Perhaps I'm ignorant. Perhaps I'm green. Perhaps it wasn't Halibut. Whatever it was, it wasn't fresh. Burping fishy brine for an hour after dinner.
Tenzaru Soba was impressive in presentation and had all the appropriate accessories. All things looked well and good and in proper order, but that was as far as it went.
Turns out that I'm not a fan of soggy buckwheat noodles.
Dessert came with jazz hands - Neapolitan Japanese ice cream of plum, vanilla, and green tea. Very impressive. Deep fried in tempura batter and served in a puddle of chocolate and strawberry drizzle, I'd easily say that the dessert was the best thing on the bill. This is not to say that the ice cream was good. Again, it LOOKED appealing.
This is the their only location and I trust it will stay that way.
I'll not be returning, but it is good to know that there is at least tolerable sushi to be found ON the hill.Listed in: Sushi, Ramen, Curry, and more, Identity Crisis

This place is okay. Their sushi is pretty fresh and tasty but I don't think I would return here again for the following reasons:
1) I don't live in PV
2) I can easily find other sushi place that can beat their quality and price in South Bay
3) The sushi is somewhat overpriced
4) The salad was bitter, the tea was cold and the dish was dirty
Anyway I still need to thank my friend for bringing me here cos I had a good time talking with him, his sis and his adorable cute nephew! -

they get 5 stars for not having any BAD sushi. and that is quite an accomplishment, trust me (see sushi duke).
They had a very good salad, miso.
decent philly roll, salmon nigiri.
we ordered extra salad dressing, the guy bobbed his head and walked away. funny thing is my friends made a bet on whether he would return or not. 10 minutes later, still no dressing. we get it from another server finally, and he never returns.
Overall:
I would return here just for a casual meal of the basics. nothing fancy here.Listed in: My SoCal experiences.

Oakland, CA
I live around here but usually don't eat Japanese food out too much (family owns a Japanese restaurant and I eat there all the time). A friend dragged me here yesterday and most of what I had was, for lack of better words, crap, for the prices they charged at least.
We got a boat with tempura, steak, a California roll, and tuna and salmon sushi. The steak wasn't very good at all- it was thin and too lean, and pretty cold when we got it. The roll appeared okay, not made sloppily, seaweed was crisp and the sushi rice was prepared properly, yet the crab had a poor flavor. The tuna and salmon on the sushi were decent quality for the prices, but the sushi was poorly made, too much rice and not enough wasabi inside. Overall I would classify their sushi as "American" style, or what you would find at one of those gimmicky Pho/sushi places. The tempura was good, though. -

Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA
In dire need of a sushi fix, we made our way over to Asaka to give it a try. We arrived on a Saturday at 7pm and the place was relatively full, but we were seated right away. There were tons of kids in the place, which seemed very strange. One group of about 14 had about half their party in children. The place was overly loud and we had a difficult time holding a conversation, especially over the yells, cries, and giggles of all the children.
The service was very slow and no one came around to take our order for several minutes. When they finally did we placed our drink order, an order of the tempura appetizer, and two sushi rolls (caterpillar and crunchy rolls).
While we were waiting for the tempura, we noticed that our sushi rolls were completed and just sitting on the sushi counter. Our rolls sat there for at least 10 minutes until our tempura was ready.
The flavor of the rolls were pretty good. It wasn't anything that blew me away. It won't be a place that we rush back to enjoy good sushi. The service alone was reason enough not to return. -

uh gross. Would totally give this place zero stars if i could. First of all, this place isn't japanese... hm, I was thinking Korean, but Nelson H. thinks Chinese owners. And the waitresses aren't japanese either, so the lady was very confused when we ordered ocha.
Mom ordered the seafood yakisoba, Dad ordered the sashimi salad and I had the chirashi. Well, my mom's yakisoba came out really quickly, and it tasted burnt. then we waited. and waited. After what seemed like forever, my dad got his salad. and then waited some more for my food. finally mine came. my mom was long done with her burnt food. my sushi was pretty bad too. oh god, and the dressing on the salad!? it tasted like rancid garlic. -
Review from Josephine A.
Torrance, CA
Where to begin? I went earlier in the evening, and I wanted to sit on the patio, so my friend and I asked if there was availability, and the manner in which the waitress responded was flabbergasting. Her crudeness and curt attitude was just......I'm speechless. Anyhow, we were seated at a booth.
We perused the menu for several minutes, and no one even came around to touch base with us. It's hospitality 101 to acknowledge new patrons even when busy (although it wasn't) with a "Hi, I'll be with you in a second".
Okay, I don't want to expound on the unnecessary details, so allow me to proceed to the food. It was subpar; the sushi's quality seemed dubious to me. It tasted fine, but the texture was awry. It would have tasted worse had we ordered just sushi or sashimi, and not the special rolls. My cranberry juice wasn't served with ice, so it tasted like cranberry concentrate. EEK!
The tempura ice cream and the sunset view were the only things that salvaged the whole meal. Well, the rainbow roll was average, but it's improbable for any Japanese restaurant, be it a cheap or swanky spot, to mess up this ubiquitous roll! This place has potential to be so much better, but the people running the show seem to lack the ability to be circumspect.
Btw, I started to get bodily aches and a weird, chemically aftertaste in my mouth after dinner. :( -
Review from Lori K.
When I lived up on the hill this was my regular sushi spot. I've sat inside and I've sat outside and you tell me... where else can you have sushi outdoors while watching the sunset?
Yes, the service is a bit slow and you might have to stand around for 5 minutes before you're seated even though only 3 tables in the whole place are occupied and yes, you may have to ask for you water 3 times before it gets to you, buuuuuuuut who cares? These may be things that make it or break it for me at other restaurants but the food at Asaka is up to par and so fresh and yummy that I'm willing to put up with the slow service.... after all, what's the rush? Order a beer or some plum wine and reeeeeeeellllllax and enjoy the view! -
Review from Reno C.
I'm always up to try new restaurants, and a friend suggested to dine here one sunday afternoon. First thing I saw was it got back2back zagat ratings. Um, must be good I thought. Lots of people waiting outside to be seated.
After we were seated, we waited for about 15 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order, mind you we kept flagging her down. After getting our drinks, about twenty minutes later we had to flag her down again. It took us three attempts to finally get her to take our order. One person in our party got his salad and noodles, but it took 10-15 minutes to only get half of our Sushi order. The other half of the sushi order came 10 minutes later, and was missing some items.
Poor service, poor attitude, we were told there was no manager that night. A good sunset and so so sushi. I guest its the only Japanese food in the area for the locals. Gave this place an extra star for the sunset. -
Review from David K.
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
My wife and I love this place and either go two or three times a month or I order takeout 3 or 4 times a month because I need to get my sushi fix. The sushi is always great, amazingly fresh and delicioius. The sushi specials are fabulous; they often offer fresh Blue Fin Tuna (which is incredible) or other amazingly fresh and not-so-common fish off the menu. The choice of sake is great and the waitresses are always very helpful in suggesting somethng to try. Asaka even offers nights of sake tasting, which we haven't yet attended but are sure to in the future.
As other reviewers have mentioned, there really is no other place where you can sit out (weather permitting) and watch the ocean and eat amazing sushi down in the South Bay. As such, you do pay a little more for it but we never mind. When I say we're paying more for it, I've usually chosen to go somewhere where you can get decent sushi for 1/2 price. We opt for Asaka everytime because it's delicious and close to home. Our 2nd choice in the South Bay is Club Sushi, great tasty sushi at 1/2 price? You can't beat it. But the quality of sushi is so much superior at Asaka. And again, Asaka is right down the road from us.
We'll be going here for years, over and over again, loving every minute of it. -

Playa Vista, CA
This place was so so as far as japanese food is concerned. I came here for lunch, had the lunch special which that day was a roll of albacore tuna and salmon collar.
The interior looks nice, they have a view of the ocean from the patio. The service was friendly if a bit slow.
The food was alright. Nothing bad, but nothing great either. Wouldn't mind coming back here for lunch if I was in the area couldn't think of anywhere else to go. But definitely not a place that I would crave coming back to -

Came here for lunch.
Ordered the sea bass.
It was delicious but expensive.
The veiw can't be beat.
The service is as expected.
It's actually better than I thought it would be based on the amount of competition they are against (virtually none).
Ironically I haven't had the sushi but my friends seem to vastly enjoy this place. I'll give it a try next time. -

Redondo Beach, CA
Oh Johnny, it just not like they cut the sushi on the west-side! Puhlease. Asaka has a great view, more than adequate service and relatively tasty sushi.
The two sushi boats are the best deal, and they also prepare for takeout. If you want trendy sushi, go try some place in Santa Monica. If you want solid sushi with a great view come here. -
Review from I Q.
San Pedro, CA
This place is a travesty. The only thing saving it from one star is the fantastic ocean view.
Everything about this restaurant gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.
Service was barely tolerable, slower than grandpa after he's taken his diazepam. Tea was lukewarm, low-grade bagged bulk crap and they had the audacity to charge us extra.
Food is strictly mediocre, not one iota better than any teriyaki house in the entire city. And it was expensive.
My suspicions - that this place makes its bank off of the lazy PV soccer moms who don't want to travel off the hill for proper sushi - were confirmed, because they made up 80% of the clientele we saw during our visit. I felt sorry for the kids they were stringing along with them, too. Future sushi-haters in training.
I love you Yelpers, but seriously, this place is horrible and those of you voting it 4- and 5- stars really need to get to a proper sushi joint for some perspective. -
Review from Jase H.
San Pedro, CA
Decent sushi, not the best prices. Unless you're on a date, sit at the bar, have some beers, and converse with the sushi chefs about what to order. I think customers are paying mostly for the ocean views that this shopping center is known for. Never had a huge issue with the service, just a bit slow, especially in the evening.

This restaurant is clean and Americanized-- did you expect anything else in the middle of pv's the hill?
The food here is fine and the service is great. The waitresses and sushi chefs are very friendly and fun to talk to. The fish given on the sushi could be cut just a bit thicker for each piece.
If I needed to grab a snack and enjoy a lovely view, I would come here. I came here 2 two weeks ago- ordered a yellow tail handroll, lunch special (chicken teriyaki, soup, rice, california rolls, potato salad), 4 pieces of sushi, 4 orders of warm sake... the bill came out to $57 I think. Kinda pricey but hey, what do you expect in a location like this? They need to pay rent somehow... -

Overpriced and terrible customer service...
it was real bullshit to go out to a family dinner and not have my meal brought to me as my family is finishing, my meal come s out and pay a shitload for it...way to go Asaka! :)
we had to get up out of our seats to get the attention of the waitress...
anyway...i will go back again and see if i they have improved...

so i went back and the place is a lot better and the customer service has improved making the 1star i gave them in the beginning rise up :)
good work and I am happy to see the improvements... :)

Burbank, CA
I expected Asaka to be a nice place to have sushi, since its sitting among other nice and quaint shops and eateries and not to mention the amazing view. My two lunch buddies were starving and particularly craving sushi. The place took forever to seat us, and another forever to bring us our food. It wasnt what we expected.........I mean we ordered sushi and expected it to be delicious, but it just wasnt.
The place got pretty full after we were seated and to our surprise, one server juggled the whole place! One. No one else, just the one person taking orders, serving food, filling drinks, etc, etc. That caused us to wait on our order for about 45 minutes. Not good when you go in hungry. We ordered a few different rolls, and the crunchy roll was just not crunchy enough. I only had two pieces during the entire dinner time cause waiting so long killed my appetite. I live 10 minutes away, but I know for sure I wont be coming back.
p.s: The vegetable tempura was plain nasty -
Review from Siegrun S.
Redondo Beach, CA
Terrible sushi. Should have known it was bad after we passed our usual seat at the sushi bar (as we sit at the sushi bar at every other sushi place we go) for a table outside with a panoramic ocean view, since the sushi chef was less than warm and friendly. We asked where the salmon was from and if it was farm or wild. He was unenthusiastic and we had to dig for one word answers. It was farm, by the way. Gross.
I went with my boyfriend as we have been wanting to try it for a while, and are occasionally on the hill. Big disappointment!! The albacore was awful and the service from the waitress was elementary. The waitress took the order of a table that sat after us, when we were clearly waiting to order. She even brought me a dirty plate to eat my sushi off of! I mentioned it was dirty immediately when she placed it in front of me, and she tried to scratch off whatever it was, and was unsuccessful. When I asked for a new plate, it took an eternity!
I do give credit to the bus boy, though. My water was always full.
This is the place for you if you dig on grocery store prepackaged sushi and rolls. The only thing good about this place is the ocean view! But I would suggest going to subway next door for the same view and a dependable quality of food.
We will not go back. Go to Gu Gu in Hermosa for great rolls and happy hour half off sushi, and Osho for traditional sushi in Manhattan beach. -

I've been here about five times and their food gets better every time. They are always very friendly and the servers are always on their toes at refilling our iced waters and hot teas.
I'm a roll fan so I usually order their special rolls. I can't name them right now since i've tried so many but they're all pretty good. I've recently ordered the calamari and it was very filling that I had trouble finishing my dinner. The first time I was there I ordered the dynamite appetizer and did not like how all the scallops were fingernail-sized.
This is not my favorite sushi place but I enjoy the food here and wouldn't mind coming again. They also have patio seating so you can watch the sunset on a non-windy/foggy day. -

Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
Service was attentive, food was forgettable. We only dine there during the week, but we've been there twice now and half of their rolls are California rolls topped with different items. Seriously. Examine their menu, almost exactly HALF of the roll menu consists of variations on a California roll. When we had salmon rolls or other fish, it was not the freshest. Rainbow rolls- my partner and I usually fight for each piece. Here, we were lucky to clear the plate. When you've got Swan Thai next door and Subway on the other side, there is no reason to eat here and claim it's fantastic "just for the view". Don't bother, exercise your options.

I am a resident of RPV and would dine at ASAKA for the convenience. However, I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place anymore as the waitresses not to be trained on the menu. My uneducated waitress charged for a bowl of rice when it comes with the combo... but would not take it off my bill.. . I tried to contact the management with no avail.
Also, the fish is not fresh and the portion sizes are tiny.. If you want real sushi, do not go to Asaka.. I recommend Oki-Doki in Hermosa Beach..
Asaka deserves ZERO stars! -

Solid Quality Fish
Some of the reviews are very negative, but I have to say I was impressed with the quality of the fish. It was reliably delicious.
One of my regular tests of the quality of the place and their handling of the fish is to order Spanish Mackerel. When it is good, it is very very good. And when it is bad, it is HORRID. It was perfection, and a pleasure.
We also had halibut, salmon, blue-fin tuna, a lobster roll, and albacore in a dijon sauce...all of which were delicious.
Some negatives are the sushi chefs were not incredibly eager to make recommendations (maybe I'm not asking the right way), the edamame side order came with like a pound of edamame which made me feel very wasteful, and there wasn't a board where they could indicate which fish were freshest that day. -

Food is very good and the sushi is fresh and the service is very attentive. Prices are reasonable, hey, what else do you need? Their lunch specials are always good, especially the California sushi plate and the tempura special. Great ambiance on a nice day sitting on the patio and looking at the views of the Pacific Ocean and people watching.

Not sure what all the complaining is about.... the food was insanely awesome and we- 5 adults, 1 kid- had a LOT. It was an odd hour-- 430pm on a Saturday, so service was super attentive and friendly. Seriously, we all couldn't stop talking about how good and fresh everything tasted (edamame, seaweed salad, sashimi deluxe, sashimi salad, sake, rainbow roll, veg tempura, kids meal-- YUM-- soooo muuchhh fishhh!). Only so-so meal was seafood udon- pretty standard. Great views, great music, and happy-looking people all around. Waitress didn't balk (publicly) after we sent her back to split the check several ways. Perfect meal after a fun little roadtrip and hike at nearby Albacore Cove.... lovely day.

It is a nice place to go for lupper in the early afternoon. Really like their garden salad. Great place to watch the sunset.
