Not as much selection as Kinokuniya, but I prefer going here. The store is smaller than Kinokuniya, but the placement of the shelves makes it feel more open. I often feel too cramped in Kinokuniya.

I think the less selection is better because everything gets a little more display room so you can find what you're looking for a little more easily. I like the fact that it's very quiet, so I can browse the books and magazines in peace.

Kinokuniya also has a lot more anime and manga stuff, so all the weeaboos like to flock over there. I try to avoid it when I can.

Like others have said, I like the stamp card thing because it saves me (a little) money in the long run and builds customer loyalty.

A few reasons why this place is better than Kinokuniya, as far as I'm concerned...
    - less crowded, less known
    - magazines are not plastic-wrapped and you can actually stand there and flip through everything you like
    - magazines are *one* month ahead of ones at Kinokuniya and they're only about $1 or $2 more, whereas the newest ones at Kinokuniya costs about $3 more than the same ones at Asahiya.... makes sense?
    - the space just feels bigger, cleaner and brighter.

Note to the perverted - Juvenilla (sp?) is not another word for U-15. Not that I was looking for U-15 or anything. Don't Google it. No, don't. You're doing it aren't you? No, no, don't do it, aww, you did it didn't you?

    Anyways.

Very clean and spacious, if not understocked bookstore. Manga and anime-related stuff are in the back corner. Wouldn't be the first time someone tried to hide all the nerdy otakus into an unseen corner. Yeah, I'm talking to you, mother. Not that you're reading this, you're not cool enough to know what Yelp is. Booyah. I'm so juvenile. Which again, is not another word for U-15.

    Anyways.

I do much prefer this bookstore as compared to the nearby Bookoff and Koukinkenkakeninya (sp?). It really by far has the smallest selection of the three, but it's so open and uncrowded compared to the other two. Claustrophobics rejoice.

You see, if I could read Japanese or were interested in Anime comic books I would give this place 4 stars since everybody in there is reading and unafraid to touch the books unlike at Kinokuniya where you feel like a little kid in a glass figure shop. However, it's really eerily quiet and there's no place to sit. Anyhow I usually only come to these sort of places for the stationary and this store basically has a teeny tiny selection compared to Kinokuniya's.

Bottom line:Go to Kinokuniya for stationary products.

First off, this address is wrong - it's at 360 Madison now, which is only about a block from the old address. (Ironically, you can see the shadow of Asahiya's name on the old building.)

I used to shop at Kinokuniya, who have an awesome selection but outrageous prices. I'd passed by Asahiya a few times, always meaning to go in. Finally, someone told me they were cheaper.

It's a lot better organized, much cheaper, and the staff are friendlier at Asahiya. Although the selection isn't as good (of course it wouldn't be - it's a much smaller store) they still had a good size and are willing to special order anything you can't find. They also have one of those frequent buyer punchcards that you get punched for every $10 you spend.

    I've been converted.

I totally agree with Ann H. Between Kinokuniya and Asahiya - I'd always choose to shop at this Asahiya. With more open space, one long row of magazines, large signs on top of shelves, $5 CDs (old), less people, and no stairs to climb, it's MUCH easier and more pleasant to shop here. They may not carry all that Kinokuniya has (they definitely have less non-literary items, including anime and stationery goods), but it's good enough for me who actually feel claustrophobic at Kinokuniya...

Asahiya is my first stop whenever I need a Japanese book.  The selection is not that great, especially compared to the monster Kinokuniya nearby.  That said, Asahiya provides stamp cards, and it feels great to get that $10 back.  Sure, you have to spend $200 to get it, but money is money, and collecting stamps is fun.

Although very clean and spacious, I only saw Japanese books here. I saw some cute stuff but due to no English stuff in sight, I just left. I was afraid that any transaction here would have to be conducted with me hunched over my Japanese-English dictionary.

spacious with helpful staff, but limited quantity of items.
plus they have NO MUSIC -- the place is dead silent.  i felt that i had to whisper the entire time I was there... awkward.

There are few Japanese bookstores here but they offer one of the better selections. Can also purchase little gifts and cards as well. You can place orders I believe if there's something you specificly want to buy as well.

It's not as great as Kinokuniya but it still has some nice things. As far as manga goes, if you're looking for older editions, you're better off finding it here. However if you are following new releases you may be best off at the other place. Their manga section is also very small to begin with so you may not find something if it's not a popular release.
