I'm sad to edit my review and lower my stars to three, but the last few times we have come here, the service and food have just been ok. We stopped by for lunch on a Sunday with hardly anyone in the restaurant and our server barely even came to our table. At one point, we actually had to find her to get our check.

As far as the food, it's just middle of the road. I don't know what happened since the first handful of times we went, but it's just not the same. It's pretty pricey for the quality of fish you aren't getting. I went for lunch by myself and ordered one roll and some edamame and my bill was almost $20 (I didn't even have a drink). Just a bummer since this used to be one of our favorite places!

    Wow, avoid!

I've been to Asahi more times than I'd like to admit.  Its unfortunately close to my office and some of my coworkers like it.  But now, these aren't coworkers that actually like sushi.  These guys order the lunch bento boxes with the teriyaki chicken that tastes like the frozen bagged stuff at Trader Joe's.  Not worth it.

Their sushi is where they really fall flat.  Nigiri is served as huge hunks of low quality fish.  Sorry, but I'd rather have a normal-sized piece of HIGH quality fish.  Not here.  The rolls are obscenely ridiculous.  If your idea of sushi entails rolls that are fried and dripping in mayo, then this might actually be the place for you.  This is THE quintessential "American" sushi restaurant.  If you are looking for real nigiri or sashimi you better look elsewhere.

In addition to being under-quality, the prices for the sushi lunches are actually quite high.  $14 will get you maybe like 5 pieces of nigiri and a small roll.  My favorite sushi lunch spot nearby, Katsu-Ya in Encino, has a mucccchhhh better special for $14.  But alas, my coworkers think it is too "far" (4.8 mi vs 2.4 mi) and would rather go to Asahi.  I will drive the extra 2.4 miles any day for good fish, and I will go alone, thank-you-very-much.

Oh, and I almost forgot - their menu has shumai AND bulgogi on it.  Chinese dumplings, and korean beef, on a SUSHI menu?  That should be an instant sign to avoid at all costs.

Don't repeat my mistakes.  Don't be like me.  Don't give in.

I love the food here but I'm just unable to give them a five star review. After coming here on multiple occasions we have failed to receive food we ordered.

The last time we were here we ordered a couple combos and some sushi. We never received our sushi we had to ask for it. And by the time we got it we were full from the hot food and sushi just doesn't go well in a to-go box.

This time we ordered two appetizers, sushi, and one combo. We received out sushi first, then the combo (but they forgot the soup, they had to come ask us if they gave it to us. Do you see an empty soup bowl on our table?) and we didn't receive the appetizers. Which should have come FIRST.

We asked where they were to which our waitress replied "You haven't gotten them?" (Once again, do you see them? Cause you obviously didn't bring them...)

I will raise my review once service picks up again. It's been on a steady decline...

Only the service here deserves a decent rating.

The last few times I've been back within the last year I have been VERY disappointed. Will not be returning here again.

Last experiences in a nutshell: At least one out of 3 dishes ordered for the table contain obviously OLD SEAFOOD. It tastes wrong and later makes you SICK when you get home. After notifying the server while dining, despite an apology we are still billed for it!!!

For a sushi restaurant, fresh ingredients is a no-brainer and it's alarming when the restaurant repeatedly serves you junk. & did I mention that the rolls are packed with an inch thick layer of rice - leaves little space for anything else.

    save your money, go elsewhere.

The sushi here is pretty good.  We come here for lunch and get the special that comes with a CA roll, yellow tail, shrimp, tuna, mackerel, and something else that I can't remember, sorry! Served with miso soup also. Portions are decent, staff is friendly, and service is great. Your meal comes out quick, which is awesome because we try to eat and hit a bucket of balls down the street before returning to see patients at the Veterans Hospital.
I like it when they say Irashimase when you walk in....of course it is a dead give away that the place is run by my Korean friends and not my Japanese peeps by the accent, but shouldn't keep you from trying this place. I say this because I don't usually frequent Korean run sushi places. Having said this, Asahi is really good. I actually saw some of the dishes that they had prepared and will probably order something different next time.

Never again. I have the biggest stomach ache right now... I'm squirming in bed trying to be comfortable but my belly isn't having it. I'm hoping I drop some kids in the pool very soon! And, the rolls are just packed with lots of rice to make it look big. Quality is meh. The sushi is NOT legit.

I've been eating here since it opened a few years back since it's so close to where I live.  Overall it's a pretty good place and in my opinion, has gotten better as they get older...My oldest daughter really enjoys sushi and my youngest enjoys the cooked options.

When I first started coming here, some days the fish tasted super fresh, other days, not so fresh, but I have really noticed the past 6 months the quality has gotten a lot more consistent, and the fish has tasted nice and fresh each time we've been there.  We eat here a few times a month.  Their portions are big, I am a big eater, and one 101 or crunch roll can almost fill me up.  Been eating healthier lately and have ordered a few of their salads; avocado and seaweed salad and both were good, but the portions were huge, one salad will easily feed 3-4 normal sized eaters.

As for their service, it's certainly not as bad as some people have commented about, but there are times where it can be slow and you really have to ask for things, and if you order sushi items and cooked items, like most places i've been to, food will always come at different times.  People though are friendly and I have never felt rushed to leave even when it's been busy....

I'm done with this place. Dropped $140 on dinner and they have the nerve to ask me to leave because they had other guests waiting. Didn't even finish boxing up my own sushi and they are saying I have to bounce. Lame. This place has gone down the hill since the change of ownership and the fact that they now primarily cater to CSUN students ... kids who don't have money or think Shogun Sushi is awesome ... sad sad sad.

This is a good place to get sushi in the area, especially if you can get a csun discount. It gets crowded at times, but the wait is never too long. Service is okay, some days it's good other days it's slow.

This place is OK. Not the best and not the worst. The service is pretty terrible. I don't asked to be catered too but I do ask for a little respect, which they lack. The garlic edamame is pretty good but the sushi is a big EH. I near by so it's a quick sushi fix. Always crowded too. The valley needs better sushi places.

    "Meh. I've experienced better."

Yup, this place deserves two stars, and I'm already being generous about it.

Came here for dinner tonight around 6pm with two of my girlfriends.  One of them has been here already and she enjoyed it so she wanted us to try it.  For 6pm on a Tuesday it was a full house.  We ended up sitting by the bar because we didn't want to wait for a table, and we were hungry.

I ordered the Energy roll, it had shrimp tempura and spicy tuna inside, and eel on top.  It was pretty good but the spicy tuna was way toooo spicy for me.  I've tried spicy tuna at most places and they've all been consistent with the taste.  But here, it was just overwhelming to me.

But here comes the bad part, my two other girlfriends' food came before mine did.  We're all in the same party, shouldn't all of our food come out at the same time?!  No!  I had to wait at least 20 minutes for mine!  I felt bad for my girlfriends because they waited for my sushi to come out but it was taking too long.  Not good at all.  My girlfriend even asked the sushi chef in front of her who took our orders if my roll was coming out soon, and he just non challantly said, "yeah, it's coming.  I'm busy."  WTF!?!?  You're busy??  Well, I'm hungry!!!  How come you made their orders and you didn't make mine with theirs?!?!  Get your sh*t together!  I didn't get his name, although I should have.

But that's not the icing to the cake, folks.  We just about finished eating and was just waiting for the check and what do I see in the window where they keep the fish???  A fly!!!  A fly where the fish is.  The fish they use to make your sushi!!!  I say that is soooo disgusting!!!!  (I've posted a picture for proof)

I wouldn't come here ever again.  Super slow service with a side of fly with my sushi....no thanks.

Well I hate to do this but when you and your buddy get violently ill from their "sushi" something is really wrong here. I have NEVER gotten sick from a sushi meal before, not even the buffet style, conveyor belt or ayce joints.

They offer a sushi "happy hour" from 8:30 to 10 M-Th, but trust me there is nothing happy about it, I think they are just using up old fish. Not sure if any of the other patrons suffered the same fate yesterday but ouch!  Enough said:(

The rolls here are just ok and the sashimi is average at best. It's a little too pricey for the quality if you ask me. Their fried ice cream is pretty large, but not always crunchy like other ones I've had.

I really dislike the service. I've eaten here at least 5 times. Each time I visit food takes forever to come out yet I feel like they rush me and whoever I'm with to order eat and get out. I realize you're busy, but geez, let me enjoy my food first...

There are plenty of other places to get better sushi and better service in the valley so take your business elsewhere.

Not sure if I caught them on a bad day, but their service was SOOO SLOW! It took us forever to get our drinks and food. There was only one waitress working the entire resturant. But she could have at least made up for it by being nice... and she was NOT nice.

Sushi was pretty run of the mill. Nothing outstanding or that I would reccomend. Probably won't be returning here.

This restaurant was very crowded, but I'm not really sure why (probably the only game in town).  Ordered various combination plates; the beef teriyaki was on the tough side.  But aside from the food, the poor service really irked me.  Even if it's busy, the wait staff shouldn't take away your tea cup and plate while you're still drinking and eating!  I had to put my orange rind on an empty condiment dish.  Felt like I was being pushed out the door!

Sushi & lots of other non-seafood items (bento box, noodles, etc) which is perfect for those who like sushi & those who don't! Service here was really good, don't know what every1 else's deal is but when I went, it was fantastic.  Their peach iced tea is also really good! They also had mango but I didn't wanna try that.  Sushi was decent, bento looked big (enough for leftovers w. the 3 combo).  I'd come back here again for the sushi-haters in the world.  They offer more than teriyaki, so yay!

"What would you like?" the waitress asks me.

"I would like the A1 -" I begin to say.

"Stop, just stop it. I don't even know the numbers. Read me the item," the waitress says.

    What. The. Hell.

I have this unspoken Yelp code that you shouldn't mention waitresses' names in reviews unless you got exceptional service from them. This is because in the past I've been threatened with law suits towards such actions. Ergo, I will desist from divulging the name of the waitress, but just know that I was seriously taken aback by her behavior. I know this is difficult to do, but she could have merely waited for me to finish talking, and then look discretely at the menu to see what I was talking about. Instead she took a stance of anger and oblivious ignorance.

I got my cocktail sashimi ($9.92) to go. In about ten minutes I got my food and took off. Now let me say that I've had sushi meals that consisted for 20 pieces (AYCE) and I've had sushi meals consist of 4 pieces (high end or even sometimes super market), and I've not only been satisfied but satiated.

    Wow, this sushi was bad.

Now, it can be said that the waitress's behavior was a predominant contributor to my general discontent, but note that I had forgotten about the incident by the time I reached my car and only recalled it now as I sat down to produce this review. But holy crap that sashimi was bad. It was so fishy I almost threw up. I couldn't finish it - and I NEVER NOT FINISH FOOD. Seriously, read my reviews - is there any point where I'm like, "It was so bad I didn't finish it"? No, not until this review. Seriously - it was sashimi! What the hell goes into sashimi? Fish. Fish. Fish. It's only one ingredient. Ergo, the only way you can screw it up is if the fish isn't fresh. And I don't mean, "fresh from the sea that day" (because it's a commonly known fact that over 50% of fish served at sushi joints is flash frozen); the fish I had at Asahi was putrid.

Overall, I don't know which left a worst taste in my mouth: the service or the food...

I am a hugeeeeee and i mean hugeee sushi fan...Never have i ever let  my friends down whenever I'd take them to a sushi spot. I have many favorite sushi restaurants and asahi is definately one of them. I'd recommend trying their tempura california roll... I know it doesnt seem much but trust me, one bite and it melts in your mouth. Actually anything tempura is good on the menu. Only thing I didnt like was the fact that they charge you extra for the edemami. Most places ive been, it usually  comes with it. But other than that. good food, good vibe. Great customer service and I've never had a problem with them.

My friends invited me to join them for sushi at this place. I had never been even though I had passed it several times over the years.  We sat at a table, which was a first for me, and ordered all our food at once, also a first for me.  It showed up in a few stages.  I have no idea if that's normal because I'm used to eating at the bar and ordering as I eat.

Service was nothing too special, but the place was somewhat busy.  We had to ask for refills on drinks and flag her down when we needed something.  She never stopped by and asked status or if we wanted anything else.

The food presentation was fantastic.  Each plate was beautiful and quite fancy-schmancy. The flavor wasn't too bad either.  Portion sizes were rather large.  Rolls weren't very tight but not too loose, either.  They poured sauces over everything, which isn't exactly my style.  I even think one of the salmon rolls had Italian dressing on it.

We only ordered a handful of items and there were so many more items on the menu that I can't wait to try.  Unfortunately, for as often as I like to eat sushi, the price was a bit out of my league to go back regularly.  This will have to be a special occasion dining experience.

The food was good but the service was ngeh.

Came here w/ my daughter and boyfriend, as usual they greet you nicely when you come but that's pretty much it in terms of friendly service.

We ordered a beef yakisoba, Snow Corn roll, and Jalapeno Tempura roll and mochi ice cream for dessert.

Out of these three we ordered, I'd say the Snow Corn roll was the best. It had baked albacore, lobster, smelt egg, over a california roll (and it may have had something else on / in it too but I don't remember). I like that the yakisoba was a large portion for it's price ($9.95). Other places I know would've charged 11+ easy. The sushi prices aren't so bad either. Pretty reasonable in my opinion ranging from $6-12 depending what's in it.

I also like the layout of the menu. I'm someone who likes my sushi baked / fried and rarely raw (except spicy tuna) and the menu layout has each of these sections and descriptions w/ pictures which is nice. The sections are Fresh, Baked, and Tempura. I wish all sushi places did this. It would make it a lot easier to order instead of having to ask "what's in it".

The mochi ice cream was good however the picture it came w/ was misleading. On the menu, it showed the mochi ice cream w/ four different flavors as if the plate comes w/ the variety but you can only order one flavor. BOO.

The service, like I said, lacking. The cups of water are so big and I think they made it like that so that they didn't have to refill your water as often. They never checked on us or asked us how our food was. And, when I gave the check she just took it and didn't say thank you, come again, etc etc. Good thing I minused $1 from the tip.

Seriously, I tip based on my experience and if I ain't happy w/ the service then the tip will reflect that.

I LOVE this place. I found this place when one of my coworkers wanted to eat out for lunch. That was about 2 years ago, ever since then I have been hooked. So addicted I kept a menu at my desk to place pickup orders for lunch.

The portions are great, the price is okay, & the service can vary. They have there attentive days as well as there non existent days. All in all I will always be loyal to Asahi Sushi. If they would delivery everything will be golden.

BSCR: Baked Scallops over California Rolls my favorite there.
Baked Salmon Roll: salmon cream cheese goodness.
Seaweed Salad: always a good starter.
Fantasy Roll: Good change from the CA Roll
Stuffed Jalapenos: Good when its hot!
Gyoza: the dippin' sauce is yummy.

There are so many other great things on the menu, you should try them!

All I remember it taste delicious
Its a spicy tuna roll, topped with seared tuna drizzled with the perfect sauce and purple onion. If your expecting to kiss someone I suggest skipping the onion, LOL. It has a small side salad too.

Happy hour only applies to sake and beer, I believe order one and get the 2nd free.

The best thing about this place is the food.  We've never had a bad dish and the sushi is always fresh and tasty.

The service, on the other hand, sucks.  We've had ok service and we've had bad service.  Just earlier this evening we decided to give this place another try as it had been a while since our last visit.  We were promptly greeted and seated.  It took a little while for the waitress to take our order but she got it eventually.  The sushi was brought out as well as the miso soup.  After about 10 minutes, I asked where my beer was and she looked puzzled.  Suddenly a light went on and she realized she had forgotten it.  No worries, right.

So then my meal came and it looked delicious but my girlfriend's did not.  So, I waited patiently.  About 3-4 minutes later the waitress returned to refill my water but for some reason, did not refill my girlfriend's glass, which was more empty than my own.

So yet another few minutes later she returns with her dish and we eat.  Overall, the food was good but it took a long time to get take-home dishes and the check.

Also, they advertise a special discount for CSUN students, but there are so many restrictions on what is eligible for this discount, it hardly matters.  We got a little bit of everything from the menu and nothing was eligible for the discount even though we're both students.

So if you're looking for good food but don't mind waiting around all night for sub-par service, this is the place for you.

The only Sushi spot i like to frequent near my home. The rest are pretenders or just Horrid!!! The $$ is reasonable i guess. The service is usually great although they have gotten a few new girls that aren't completely up to par for me.

    My recommendations:
If you drink alot while you eat get the Iced Tea free refills vs 1 can of soda

The Aloha roll - my 2 favs in one roll spicy tuna roll topped with Albacore

The Yummy Crunch forget whats in it but sure is YUMMY

My Fiance is squeamish so he always gets the Beef Teriyaki and the meat is extremely tender and the sauce if you don't mind your rice to be swimming  is rather tasty.

    Go. Enjoy. Eat.

and stop at the Baskin Robins down the street (my tradition that may become yours too =D)

This is a good place to take the kids and have a decent dinner.  The food is good and the service is VERY fast!  They have a bunch of different sushi rolls on the menu - I can't think of one to recommend.  So if you're looking for choices - this place has them.  Everything we tried was very good and decently priced.  I will say that the sushi rolls seem to be the same if you look closely - they are just presented in different combinations.  But really, for the price, this place is not that bad at all.  I'm a sushi fan so I can't say it's the best place I've experienced, but it's not terribly bad either.  We like this place a lot so we go here every other month.  Our kids love it as well.

    Hope this helps!

I've been here 4-5 times and have tried multiple things on the menu. They are always consistent, never was disappointed by the sushi. One of my favorite sushi places in the valley. 15% off as a CSUN student is a great surprise on your bill! Sorry, I can't tell you which sushi is great, I'll update later because I can't recall the names.

Excellent lunch specials (available on the weekend too).

Very reasonably priced menu with extra fresh sushi.  The shrimp rolls are not great because they seem to be california rolls re-named.  I love their hot green tea because it has roasted brown rice added to give it an extra kick.  The service is awesome, very quick and precise.  I will continue visiting this place for my sushi cravings.

They have a huge parking lot, park where the spaces say "Fish Dish."  These spots are usually free because people don't know that this was the past name of this restaurant.

    Thanks!

Favorite place for sushi in the valley, hands down! The servers here are so friendly and the rolls are HUGE! About the same price as any other sushi joint, but nicely decorated, clean, and you get a good field green salad that's included with your specialty roll order. Great place for a first date!

The sushi is good to very good, not foodie level or anything crazy, though.

I think the service is really good and the staff is friendly.

I do think the seaweed salad is a standout and have several times started thinking about it and had to change my plans to go get me some.

I like the food at Asahi. Try the crunch roll or the Oh my God. The staff are very kind and patient. The atmosphere and the design is kinda sketchy however not to mention the place its located. It tends not to get very packed. Try the green tea tempura ice cream if you have a chance. If you've never tried it before, you'll thank me for that! ; )

This place holds a special place in my heart. It's where I had my first date with my husband. It's also my son's favorite sushi place. Asahi is casual and family friendly. The staff is nice and fairly attentive. The waitress look out of each other  and are happy to help you even if you are not their table. The sushi is good, not to die for, but good.  I say this because some days it is really good and other days it's just passable. I am not sure why there is such an inconstancy.  If you are not a sauce person, ask for "light sauce" as they are pretty heavy handed. I personally like to taste the sushi not the sauce. They have a large selection of unique rolls and I really like the small salad they serve with them. Very yummy.

I came here for lunch with a coworker. He has been here before; not me. He lives in Azusa; I live in the Valley...something's wrong with this picture!

Whatever the case may be, I can now say I've been here! The place itself doesn't give me the "sushi house" feeling (used to be a McDonald's) but it's clean and the food was pretty decent.  I referred the sushi there as "McSushi".

We order a couple of cooked and uncooked rolls and they were okay but not the freshest. Nothing really stood out as being "earth shattering".  It was decent for what it's worth.

Service was a tad nonexistent for the most part and when we were there, there were hardly any customers.  I don't remember anybody checking up on us.

In summary, decent sushi in the Valley; service can be more attentive.

Asahi has medium quality sushi and tasty rolls at reasonable prices.

It gets a four star from me in my 2nd tier of sushi places:

-Tier 1 is the high-end expensive places.
-Tier 2 is the reasonably priced, medium fish quality sushi places.

I do this because it is not fair to compare Asanebo ($200 a person) to Asahi ($30 a person).

Asahi is near my house so I go there frequently during the week if I want to get my sushi fix. The interior decor is really nice and they have been doing upgrades all the time, but I think they are done now. I have been there a few times during Lakers and Dodgers games to have sushi and sake with friends while watching the game on their 42-50" HDTVs. Good times!

All the servers are really nice, and Mike makes the experience really fun.

If you have CSUN student ID they will give you 10% off your bill.

If you like hand rolls wrapped with soy paper and like salmon sushi then you NEED to try the Steve Roll (but make sure to have Jackie the sushi chef make it).

Asahi offers quality sushi for very good prices. The two of us normally order the rainbow, caterpillar, sake (salmon), tamago, and other rolls along with a 2course meal (my favorites are the tempura shrimp or chicken teriyaki).

Some pluses: CSUN students receive 10% off, refills are consistent on cold black or green tea and hot tea (soda comes in can and cup of ice), wait staff and chefs usually greet you upon arrival, decor is new and updated, music selection is fantastic (most Friday nights they play dance/techno and other pop music), tables are comfortable, you have a choice of seating either inside or in covered patio (great on warm nights but has heat lamps), consistently fresh fish, unlimited parking, close late on weekend days (around 10), and reliable and considerate service.

Now for a few misuses: very small bathroom (single stall!), and pretty crowded after 7 on weekend days.

Overall this restaurant is as good as Akasaka in Canyon Country and Castaic. It is also comparable to Sushimi in Valencia.

The food is fresh, well-prepared and service is great.
