Warren, MI
The staff is always friendly, the sushi is always beautiful and always delicious. My wife and I usually get 3 rolls and an appetizer, which is always entirely too much because they serve you a delicious soup and salad before your sushi comes out.
It's a bit of a drive from Warren but it's always worth it! -

After reading some of the reviews for Asahi I was bummed.... I thought this place was really good. The sushi tasted fresh, and the miso and ginger salad were excellent. I'm not a huge fan of ginger but this salad was really tasty. The service was undeniably fantastic, we were asked by several of the workers if everything was up to par, which it was....and one of the gals even jumped in front of us as we were walking out to get the door.... I totally enjoyed my experience, and would definitely go back. Oh, and they now have their liquor license..

This sushi compares to store bought pre packaged stuff. These reviews are horrible, I live in California and even the worst sushi there is better than this. I really don't reviewing a place negative but after this I will never eat sushi in Michigan. Thank you Asahi for the experience

If I reviewed this 4 months ago I would give this 4 stars. Unfortunately, I came here a little while ago and was disappointed. Ive visited a few times before and really liked it. But as of the past year or so I've really fallen into the sushi eating world, and I've found Andre
Really good spots. Asahi isnt one of them anymore. The last time I came here the service was still upbeat and attentive, which is why I gave them 3 stars, but the sushi just was not what I've been eating lately. I mean, not on the same level. It's still good, I guess, but just doesnt compare to umi or noble fish at all. They're seafood was not that fresh, and I had shrimp! I cannot eat raw sushi at the moment because I'm pregnant but even the smoked salmon just tasted like
It had been out for a while. And I LOVE smoked salmon. It's a shame because it's the closest place to me. -

Yes! I found my Detroit area sushi home! I did rely on my fellow Yelpers to lead me to Asahi Sushi, and I am so glad that I took the advice.
First off, the atmosphere is spot on. It is simple, yet elegant. You could come to Asahi for a quick lunch or a dinner date.
Next, the service is outstanding. The staff serves as a team, so you receive the most timely service. They anticipated our needs, kept our table pre-bussed, and kept our glasses full. The waitress we ordered from also made some excellent recommendations. The chef and manger (or likely owner) even stopped by to say hello on multiple occasions.
Now on to the food...it's great! Asahi Sushi is not the "cheapest" sushi restaurant around, but it is the perfect example of "you get what you pay for." We started out with the edamame, which were delicious. Next, the complimentary salad and miso soup. The ginger dressing on the salad is amazing! We then ordered an array of rolls that came on a large platter. Each roll was skillfully and artistically places on the platter other "props" such as in a martini glass (Crazy Girl roll...try it!). The Tiger Roll, Pink Lady Roll, and TNT roll were among our other favorites.
Overall, one of the best sushi experiences I have ever had. I highly recommend Asahi Sushi! -

It pains me to write this update and take away a star. Truthfully, I thought about taking away 2 stars. My biggest complaint about any restaurant is lack of consistency and I'm to the point now that I never know what I'm going to get at Asahi, I never know if I'm going to be wowed or disappointed.
The service is still great and the people that work here are just so nice, they all seem to genuinely care about the customers. But the sushi is inconsistent. Every time I ask them for a regular roll with the seaweed on the outside I get just the opposite and it's not a language barrier because there is a girl there that speaks perfect English that they hand the phone to to take carry-outs. Also, the rolls are often very messy and coming apart. The last 2 times I ate in the restaurant the rolls were unbelievably bland as if the sushi rice had not been properly seasoned.
Tonight I went in for a carry-out and it was packed! I'm very happy for them and I suspect the yelp! sticker on the door is helping a bit as well as their new liquor license. My tempura was great but my 2 rolls were inside-out (opposite of what I asked for) and the rice was so sticky that it was unpleasant, it was like mush in my mouth. I ordered a yellowtail and scallion roll and the yellowtail was extremely dark - it smelled fine but was unappetizing and unusual.
I hope they get back on track - I'll be eating their cooked food for a while since that always seems to be good.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Tasty, tasty. The salad and miso soup were a great start. The spring rolls were fresh and crispy. The sushi was outstanding. Great presentation and taste.
The decor was stylish, but simple. The chef came out and was quite friendly. However our waitress seemed a little off. -

I found something today that I didn't think existed. I found a Sushi restaurant in Michigan that doesn't suck. This holy grail of food-y goodness is called Asahi Sushi.
As we were walking into the restaurant, the owner was coming inside from his car. He opened the door for us with a smile and said "Welcome to my place!" Walk through a curtain, and you're in a very minimally, well-decorated small sushi restaurant.
We were the only people in the place, but by the time we were leaving, there were quite a few tables full of customers. We ordered a ridiculous amount of sushi for a ridiculously low price. I'm used to sushi prices in Chicago... Asahi was on the lower side of moderately-priced.
The food was excellent. The fish was very fresh-tasting. Nothing had that overpowering fish taste I've grown to hate from Michigan sushi restaurants. Their yum-yum roll was fantastic. The Clinton roll was awesome. I don't remember which roll it was, but the one with three different colors of tobiko on top and four different fishes inside was incredible.
All of their tempura rolls were delicious. I want to go back and try them all. I was also pleasantly surprised to see high-quality fishes in my chef's choice nigiri.
The spicy tuna rolls are amazing.
If you're even thinking of eating Sushi in southeastern Michigan, this is the place you should go. -

I can sum up Asahi in three words: pricey, but delish. However, if I were to expand my review, I would say that this is definitely a place we have to come back to--because pretty much every single thing on the menu was something I wanted to try. We were there for sushi, though, so that's what we were focusing on. Every single specialty roll sounded heavenly (okay, maybe heavenly is too strong a word, but it's damn close) and it was extremely tough deciding which ones to get. We picked three rolls and I wanted more! more! more! - but at $10-$14 per roll, it got expensive--quick. We also decided on a Tempura Combo to help take the edge off.
Our order was taken from someone different than who seated us and brought us drinks. And was different than who brought us our soups and salads. I only mention it because I think it led to the confusion of why our Tempura Combo was forgotten until we mentioned it, then we didn't get it until after we had finished our sushi. Not a big deal, but just a point of interest. That said, I was surprised that we got soup and salad when we didn't order a dinner, so that was a bonus!
The sushi was delicious. I think we snarfed the three rolls (8 pieces each) in about five minutes flat. We both REALLY wanted to order more...but managed to refrain. The tempura finally came out and was pretty good (and definitely tongue-burning hot and fresh!) but I probably wouldn't order it again (saving room for more sushi, you know!). Our waters were kept filled fairly well and our bill was brought quickly.
Overall, not much to complain about - the little tempura mistake notwithstanding. I just know we want to go back. Now. And spend about $150 on sushi rolls.Listed in: Troy Area A to Z Eating…, Shining 5-Star Specimens

This was our first time here. Upon entering we walked through a beautiful curtain where right away we are greeted by a waitress from the middle of the restaurant. Then the hostess comes up smiling and also says hello as if we are old friends! After we sit down even the Sushi Chef from behind the sushi bar asks us how we are doing. Needless to say we felt very welcomed. It was a pleasure.
The miso soup and salad came right after were ordered, which was nice. The soup was very tasty, though there was not a lot in it. This was the first time I can remember trying miso so I have nothing to compare it to.
We ordered a lot of sushi this night, my husband usually wants a burger after eating sushi because he's still hungry, so we loaded up. I ordered the basics, California roll, spicy tuna, etc. He was a bit more daring with the squid and salmon. It was amazing. Everything was so fresh! I haven't had sushi like this since I lived in Alabama (go figure) and was more than pleased.
Everyone said goodbye as we were leaving and the hostess even came and held the door open for us and welcomed us back! A restaurant that treats their customers this well deserves the business. We will definitely be back soon. -

Great rolls, but alright sushi and sashimi. In other words, the quality of what they do with the decent-but-not-great seafood is superb. Up the quality of the fish a little bit and you may even have a 5-star!

I tried this place out for the first time, and I have to say I was very impressed. It didn't look like much from driving by it, but since it came highly recommended, I decided to give it a try. I loved their sushi. I tried their Cool Breeze roll, and the Salmon Pizza roll.... both were pretty good.
It was also pretty fairly priced, so you won't have to worry about spending a lot of money there. The staff there is also very nice, which, for me, goes a long ways especially when it's your first time going there.
I would definitely recommend this place, and I look forward to going back and trying out more stuff from their menu. -

Another review of this place won't hurt, right? :D
I don't need to bore everyone (but I will anyway) with what they already, obviously, know:
This. Place. Is. Amaaaaaazing!
Right from the beginning you get greeted with a warm, welcoming "Hello!," from the sushi chef, to the attentative wait staff, to the clean, yummy food and the restaurant as a whole, it's just... well,.. no one word can describe it's overall amazing-ness. (See, I can't even find one word to compare it to, it's so good!)
The only reason I'm giving it a 4/5 is, because sushi & sashimi-wise, Noble Fish is at the top of my list, but!!! If you want a big meal such as a bento or more variety such as Korean, this is your place. It is mine. :) -

What's up fellow sushi loving Yelpers? Missed me? LoL.
Anywho, this review is long overdo. I've been coming here regularly for the past couple of years and at one point, I was there 3 times a week. My wife even more so during her pregnancy (don't worry, she stuck to cooked stuff). I will first start out by saying that when their sushi is good, IT'S GOOD. However, when it's bad, it's "OMG MY ROLL FELL APART BEFORE I COULD DIP IT IN MY EXTRA WASABI SOY SAUCE" bad. Well, being the sushi freak that I am and the fact that I worked in sushi restaurants for a number of years, I know the deal. Sushi chefs hop around from restaurant to restaurant and sometimes even state to state. If you see a new face behind the sushi bar, expect something to be different than the norm. The owner used to regularly chef there, but lately I have been seeing him less and less. And that folks, is the reason why many of you are experiencing a lack of consistency.
Now let's get down to sushi business. I've said it before and I will say it again... I am a complete and utter sucker for sweet and spicy sauces. The pool of awesome that that they drench their Salmon Pizza and Diablo rolls in is sooooo good. I find them so tasty that I forgive Asahi for the times the rolls fall apart. See? A sucker right? As for their raw assortment, very fresh and I have yet to be disappointed in the quality of the fish. My favorite is Uni and it has been good each time I've been there. I do always make sure to ask about when they got their Uni and if it is fresh. Thus far, answers have been honest.
Service-wise, I have 0 complaints. Everyone is friendly and prompt. The owners happen to be Korean so they have apparently taken a liking to me (I'm Korean) especially ever since we started bringing in our baby boy. The owners can't get enough of Dylan lol. They even hold him when he starts getting fussy so we can eat.
So why am I only rating this place a three stars when I'm giving it a 4-5 star review? The answer is simple: I understand that people hate inconsistency and I cannot deny such is the case here. I for one can live with it since I am very familiar with the inner workings of sushi bars.
Oh, I almost forgot! The amount of rice on the rolls... I ask for less rice and they happily oblige. All is good in the rice neighborhood after that.
To end, I would like to address some of the fellow Yelpers here. First of all, let's not talk about California rolls in sushi restaurant reviews. That's the equivalent of me walking into a bakery and talking about a plain loaf of white bread. Secondly, don't be so concerned about the crab being imitation. I've been to sushi bars that charge in upwards of $18 for a specialty roll and it still has imitation crab. Many places offer a King Crab/Snow Crab roll. If it's real crab you want, order those rolls or ask them to substitute the imitation one for the real deal. Just be prepared to pay a premium for that. I'm talking around $9.00 for a King Crab California roll. Lastly, bigger isn't always better. You want less rice and more middle on the rolls. Buffet places load the rice on their rolls to purposely fill you up. Sushi bars shouldn't be following this philosophy since they are generally fairly expensive.
By the way, don't shy away from their Korean entrees. If you like rice dishes, I highly suggest the "Bibim Bap". It's a stone bowl of rice with meat, vegetables, and an egg on top. Spicy sauce is served on the side so you control the hotness levels. It's healthy and piping hot so chow down, but with caution :) -

Having had Sushi in San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C., Ann Arbor, among others, I figured that I had had sushi as good as it could get.
And then this little place called Asahi opened by my house and my life was changed forever.
The presentation is divine and can range anywhere from sushi in martini glasses, sushi on wooden boats, sushi on glass fish, and beyond. The miso soup is perfect, the ginger dressing on the salad is heavenly, and that's just the beginning.
Everything I've had was wonderful, although my personal favorite is their specialty Garfield Roll-- to die for. The chefs also frequently throw in freebie rolls to try, or desserts on the house (most often breathtakingly beautiful fruit platters). The service is also excellent. If you like sushi, this is a MUST. -

Hmmm, the plating is beautiful but the sushi itself is okay but nothing fabulous. They do not serve alcohol which is disappointing because I like a white wine with my sushi. The wait staff is very friendly but the place is small and can get stuffy. Okay for lunch I suppose.....but not a romantic evening kind of place.

Review from James M.

I've eaten sushi at most of the well know places in metro Detroit (Oslo, Ronin, Little Tree, etc.) and this is hands down my favorite place for sushi. Here's why:
1. The sushi is great and relatively inexpensive. (I enjoy the Clinton Township roll)
2. The service is GREAT. They are always very nice to my family and always act genuinely excited to see my 2 year old son.
3. They also have pretty good Korean food if you want to try something different. (I really like the spicy pork dish)
4. The place is surprisingly really cool inside. You wouldn't know this from the outside.
My ONLY complaint is that they don't have a liqueur license. -

During a recent trip home to Michigan, I visited Asahi based on a recommendation from a family member (and the 5-star reviews here)
Asahi was a great little place (which you wouldn't have noticed from the outside strip mall non-descriptness), nicely decorated, great service, and really good sushi!
We ordered a little of everything and everything was FANTASTIC. The eel was some of the best I've had. They even had crab (real crab) nigiri. YUM! The only not-so-great item was the salmon skin hand roll. Could've been because we let it sit for a while, but I couldn't bite thru the salmon skin.
Presentation was unique with the martini glasses, which appeal to me (bartender). And the service was VERY good. They were attentive and patient with my toddler running around.
Really enjoyed Asahi...wish I still lived at 16 & Garfield so I could go all the time :o) -

Having my primary residence in NYC and my current home in Boston, I am picky when it comes to sushi. Asahi did not let me down. The staff was super nice and very attentive. They have a great variety of really creative rolls. For me the spicier the better, and they had a lot to fill that desire. The one miss was the cheese topped roll my friends ordered. But when in MI this will definitely be my sushi place:)

I'm a newbie to sushi and really enjoy it. Wish the crab would have been authentic, not too much to expect in a sushi bar. Ordered a couple different kinds of sushi. The deep fired stuff was bland. It didn't taste like much just had a mushy texture. Perhaps some would like that, I wasn't a fan. The california rolls were alright, nothing spectacular. Our waitress seemed tired and annoyed. Perhaps she was just having a rough day which happens. Overall it was fine.

Review from Megan R.
Utica, MI
After reading some reviews of Asahi on yelp, I decided I had to go try it, and I was not disappointed.
I ordered a carry-out and got four rolls: a California roll, a lobster roll, a crab roll, and the Asahi roll. I tried some from each and split the rest with my family. All of them were very good. I didn't realize how similar the lobster and Asahi rolls were from reading the menu (same sauce, same ingredients), otherwise I might have tried a different roll in its place. I have become a fan of sushi and am slowly realizing that simple is actually better when it comes to sushi.
This is the best place I have been to for the simple rolls. They have been the freshest. I particularly enjoyed the crab roll: it's deceivingly simple, with just a single piece of crab cushioned by rice in a nori wrapper, but its simplicity really made the flavor of the crab stand out. Delicious. The other rolls were good too, but this was my favorite.
The quality was very good, but unfortunately it was a little pricey. The crab roll had only six tiny pieces and at other places, the size of the rolls are your typical medium-sized rolls. I think it might be helpful if they noted what size the sushi rolls are due to the discrepancy between the actual size and my expectations from other sushi joints around the area, but I'll know next time I order. Great sushi, but unfortunately, because of the price, will not be a regular occurrence for my taste buds. -

This korean-Japanese sushi place rivals the imagination of the rolls in california. Not for the sushi purist- but when you want a dynamite roll with flavors to overwhelm the senses, this is the place. We had one of the bento boxes and I loved the tempura. I can't remember which tuna/salmon/fancy smancy roll we got, but saucy and good. Prices are comparable to places here in SD. But my favorite of all time is the dol-sot-bi-bim-bop. This is the mixed rice with veggie/meat in a HOT stone bowl. When you leave the rice on the bottom it will create nu0rung0gi- a crunchy rice layer that is my ultimate favorite part and only benefit of eating in the stone bowl as oposed to a regular bowl. OMG, it was HOT, crunchy and delicious. It's been a while since I had it that good. I love it!

Very affordable, excellent sushi. Miso soup and salad with ginger dressing came with our meal. The sushi arrived at our table on a plate that looked like a ship! We enjoyed fried banana dessert, and our waitress even brought us complementary cubes of pineapple for after dinner. The chef came by to ask us how our meal was, and it was great. We will definitely return.
