My coworkers had been going there for years, claiming it was the best sushi in Baltimore. So I checked it out and I really liked it. It's a small, clean restaurant, kind of a hole in the wall place. The sushi was fresh and I liked that combination choices were diverse. One of my favorite places to eat in Fell's Point. Very affordable, with good service.
I strolled in with time to kill, sat down and chatted with the chef. it looks like it's a family place, his daughter seated me and his wife set my plates/chopsticks. We chatted a bit, I asked him to recommend something ,he made it and it was ok, not great, just ok.
I can't say it wasn't fresh but he's just not a sushi genius like the guys at Hana or San, that's all.
I love Asahi for what it is. If you're looking to impress a date with a fancy pretentious sushi experience than this is not it. In fact its pretty much the exact opposite. The decor is very simple, the environment is relaxed and casual. The food is simple, good and inexpensive.
The place is owned by the chef who is very friendly, he and his wife do all the cooking and have a wait staff comprised of family members.
The prices are relatively cheap and I would say over all the food is better than what you pay for. I've personally never had any complaints about the quality of the food, in fact as far as sushi rice goes I haven't found better. Yes its mostly the standard rolls with some variations, nothing crazy or ground breaking but its consistently well prepared and fresh. A nice bonus is that they also have some Korean dishes on the menu as well, and the Chap Chae Bop is sooo good! They also have moochi ice cream (which if you've never tried is small balls of ice cream wrapped in a slightly sticky dough made from rice flour) in green tea, red bean, and strawberry flavors...a great treat!
I wish they would put seaweed in the miso and the take out service is pretty slow, expect to wait even if you place the order ahead of time. Other than that I enjoy Asahi, I've tried pretty much all of the sushi in Baltimore and there are a few "better" places such as Chiu's but overall this is my spot.
Fairly mediocre sushi that wasn't too fresh. I thought that mine was a litle dried out, and the rice seemed pretty old too. I got 9 pieces + tuna roll for 12.95, which seemed fairly inexpensive, but there are probably better places to go.
Avoid the Miso Soup. After that this is a decent enough hole-in-the-wall type of place to get cheap Sushi in Baltimore.
It seems that Baltimore lacks a really good sushi restaurant, which is strange it being a port town and all. Still, Asahi fills the cheap but not fantastic niche which is a much appreciated function.
The atmosphere is best described as cramped and somewhat shabby, this is after all a rowhouse come restaurant.
