i usually come here once or twice a month. it's nice and quiet, laid back and the food (taste and quality) is consistent. i always get the oxtail soup which is pretty good. i also usually get the "famous" fried rice, which tastes ok, but a little skimpy on the ingredients.

service is decent, but never nice or friendly.

fair price, consistent food, good oxtail soup and they usually have parking.

After seeing the sign out front say "Oxtail Soup" I was already sold. Then I yelped it - and I was excited to read that their Oxtail Soup was the old coffee house recipe from Kam Bowl! It wasn't as good as I had remembered but maybe it was my expectations. It was definitely close. One thing I do remember from 6+ years ago is adding the chopped ginger from the cup on the table. Mmmm....

The Loco Moco and the "famous" fried rice was really good too. I know we were hungry but still...filled the tummy.

The only draw back - it was freakin' freezing in there! Swear it was like 60 degrees in there. I know its hot outside but come on! It was not comfortable sitting there after being in the water all day and in our bathing suits. We actually put the heater on for a few minutes after getting in the car! crazy!

Definitely worth a try!

Asahi Grill is like eating a plate lunch on an actual plate (rather than from a paper plate).  Local favorites with two scoops rice, one scoop mac salad plus some Japanese dishes make up the menu of this unpretentious eatery.

Food:  Solid and what you would expect from a good plate lunch place.  The loco moco is yummy with a char-grilled hamburger patty and good brown gravy.  The same gravy is used for the chicken cutlet.  My mom liked the miso butterfish because the flavorings were light and did not overwhelm the fish.  Tempura dishes are light and crisp.  Fried rice and oxtail soup are other favorites here.  I like the sandwiches with french fries.
The Japanese dishes come with tsukemono and some kind of soup.  Once I went and it was miso soup, another time it was a clear broth with seaweed and rice noodles.

Service:  Standard.  Friendly yet perfunctuary (not motherly like Eagle Cafe).  They'll refill your water.  Sometimes they will take your money to the register, most times people take their own bill and pay.  Sodas are cups with ice and a 20 oz. bottle (not a fountain drink).

Atmosphere:  Like a diner without booths.  All tables and chairs.  Gotta love a place that has tobasco on the table.  Parking lot is pretty miniscule, but not as horrible as the one for Sabrinas/Fat Greek/Cafe TajMahal.

Overall:  A good place to go for local comfort food in your boro boro t-shirt and shorts or on your way home from a hard day's work/shopping.

Best advice on where to eat is either the valet homey, or your local buddies.  Props to Mikey for his recommendation for Asahi Grill.  Though i didnt try everything....anything commin outta the kitchen looked EFFin mouthwatering.  Breakfast is good, but not satisfying.  I mean its hard to fu*k up eggs, portuguese sausage, and rice.  Kimchi fried rice is good.  Loco Mocos and chicken katsu are very good.

But the star of this place is OXTAIL SOUP.  Not as good as KAM BOWL, but its the better than any other joint around town.  Piping hot soup, oxtail braised til the meat's about to fall off.  Peanuts, star anise, and nice heaping spoonful of fresh sliced/diced green scallions.   Throw in a bowl of rice, and fresh ginger.

Shit...too bad they dont freeze and overnight food....  :o(

I actually come here pretty often because the prices are somewhat reasonable and the food tastes good. I had the loco moco this morning and I like the tan tan mein (though it's ususlly not enough for a meal on its own). My family likes the oxtail soup - it's supposed to be the old Kapiolani Coffee Shop recipe - and their fried rice.

I give it only four stars because the wait staff is never even remotely friendly.

This place is like a minuet from where i work so its fast food at a good price...and tastes good too.

i really like the Loco Moco...it has to be my favorite thing there so far. the hamburger patty isn't dry or burnt like some places.
The Miso ramen is really good on a cold day...noodles are not soggy and the broth actually is miso broth...haha
They Oyako Don was ok...there was too much skin and fat on the chicken...but the seasoning was really good...
i tried the kim chee fried rice...and i have had better...for some reason it tasted sour to me?!?!

The menu is pretty good and they give large portions...
great place for after movies or a late dinner

Great comfort food for a good price! The recipes for the top two favorites at this local restaurant are taken from the Kapiolani Coffe Shop -- oxtail soup and fried rice.  I have tried both, of course! I have had the oxtail soup at the Kapiolani Coffee shop and Pearl City and am happy to have found a much closer location to enjoy the tasty meal.  The oxtails are cooked perfectly and fall off the bone.  Served with scoops of rice and the ginger on the table, it is truly island comfort food.  The fried rice is also good, served with two eggs any style on top.  I added a litlle Srichacha to my rice to add a little kick -- I really should have just gotten the kimchee fried rice instead.  Definitely come to check this little place out and order the oxtail soup.  I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Asahi Grill is the Japanese restaurant for Kapiolani Coffee Shop and is it ever good!  You will find excellent Japanese food along with the local favorites and the signature Kapiolani Coffee Shop Oxtail Soup...Moderately priced, it's a great place for families, breakfast, lunch, dinner and post movie meals.  Affordable for everyone and the staff is so incredibly nice and helpful....You will love this place.  The only drawback is the limited parking...but it is worth it!  Enjoy!
