My boyfriend and I love sushi. We must eat it three times a week, but lately we've both been consumed with working late and our schedules don't always mesh, so we've been coming home and trying to rustle something up. I got a hot tip from my bff Kathy about Asa Sushi, and looked them up on eat24hours. Their menu is awesome, with a full slate of appetizers noodles and dinners. But of course, we go for the sushi, and right away the Booty Roll caught my eye. Funny name, seriously great roll, with crab, spicy tuna and shrimp tempura, I feel like I'm getting a full meal in a sushi roll! The boy got a spicy tuna tempura roll and a spicy scallop roll and we couldn't have been happier. We've already made up our minds to use eat24hours at least twice a week to satisfy our sushi cravings.

I love this place for their super fast delivery ( via grub hub and good service ) - and the sushi is pretty decent.

They are not the Zushi Puzzles, but I can always count on them to have a table, my favorite hand roles, and some good old miso.

Upon entering Asa sushi, you are immediately greeted....with a funky smell. I thought it was old Asian household, but my friend thought it smelled like old urine.

It was a cold night. So, being the ramen lover I am, we decided on the beef ramen. We also split a spicy tuna tempura roll.

I saw all the reviews about the fish not being fresh and wondered, what does "not fresh" fish taste like? I'm pretty sure it was how the spicy tempura roll tasted.

The ramen came a little later. When I saw her bring the bowls we BOTH immediately thought  something was wrong. We looked at the noodles. We looked at each other and both said "instant!"

You can't fool a girl who survived off $0.45 ramen in college. The noodles had that curly look you find in instant noodles. The taste brought me straight back to college!

You can try the ramen, but I promise you that you will be steaming mad as you eat your instant ramen that cost $8.50. In addition, the beef was tough as cardboard.  To be fair, they do add some onions, cucumber skin, and carrots. That's something I never added in college.

I'll end on a good note. The server was very nice.

I hate to trash a local business, but Asa Sushi doesn't taste good, the atmosphere is dead, and they don't seem to try hard. Really the best I can say is that they are not unpleasant. On Chestnut, I would always go to Enoshima (sold and remade as Sushi In) or even Naked Fish, but had tried Asa Sushi before - maybe a year ago - cause it's a shorter walk. I gave them a second chance last night, and that's what caused me to write this negative review. The Ton Katsu dinner was overcooked and served on a bed of some sort of styrofoam packaging material, rather than the normal bed of cabbage or rice. The California sushi, ordered separate, was fine. Price for two people, no appetizers, no alcohol, no dessert was close to $40. Ok, not horrible for a sushi place, but my point is they don't even win on price.

Basic summary: There are other sushi places on Chestnut, further east. Try those.

As much as I wanted to like this place, it was really hard for me to. I ordered the Katsudon and the Yakisoba. The Yakisoba under first impression, looked amazing. But one bite into it and I noticed that my eyes tell me nothing more than lies, and that my taste buds want nothing but the best for me. The Yakisoba looked amazing but it was extremely dry and far from delightful. I thought this was just a fluke and maybe my Katsudon would be better and make me feel a little better. This time, my eyes didn't lie to me.

The Katsudon didn't even really look that edible, but I still gave it a try. It actually wasn't that bad, but would have been a lot better if the sauce you get with katsu/tonkatsu was include.. which it wasn't. Katsu sauce would have added some much needed flavor.

The main reason I even really gave this place the 3 stars even though the food wasn't so great, was because of the amazing delivery. When I ordered I was told it wouldn't be here for 45 minutes... it was at my place within 15 minutes of ordering.. although now.. in the middle of writing this review.. I'm starting to think that maybe the food didn't taste that good because the food was cooked so fast and was delivered so quickly. That can be a big possibility actually... Well 3 stars regardless, one day I'll try the food here with the hopes that I picked the wrong things off the menu and that this place is actually a diamond in the rough.

You can almost always get a table, which is the main reason I've been here a few times. Most recently I had the sashimi combo and a few additional rolls. The tuna was an almost unnatural light pink... in general I can't say the fish or rice quality here is super high (probably slightly below average). If you need a sushi fix and can't get in elsewhere, I suppose it'll do.

My best friend's girlfriend dragged me here the night the Cards miraculously came back and won Game 6 because we just couldn't bear to watch the Rangers celebrating.

The sushi was comforting, and they even turned the small flat-screen tv near the sushi bar (showing sports center) toward us so we could watch top plays. but it was too far away to read the WS updates.

the sushi was amazing. the baked mussels were really good (but I still think the ones at Sushi Zone are a little better. although I haven't gone back in a while cuz I kinda only liked to go with one special person). The spicy tataki was also insanely good.

We walked out just in time to see the line of people crowded outside the bar a few doors down who quickly informed us of the looming comeback.

Stayed for the next two innings.

    Epic night.

    Equally epic sushi.

Didn't start well.  Delivery was over an hour late.  I am usually easy to please but was compelled to write this review because the sushi was SO disappointing.  I ended up not eating half of the order, despite being starving, because the quality was so gross.  There are plenty of other sushi restaurants to choose from....avoid Asa Sushi.

I just realized that this place is way overpriced. For a normal california roll anywhere else in the city, it would cost on average $3 and it would be a nice healthy-looking roll. However, here at Asa, the california roll looks like it went on a diet and has a coke problem. It was skimpy.

The good thing about this place is that they are nice and they give you free green tea ice cream at the end. But the prices have gone up and the portions are small.

Let me preface this by saying that I don't give 1-star reviews very often.  But how this place has 3.5 stars overall is beyond me!  I came here for a weekday lunch with a coworker, and we both were sick for two days afterward.  I very much wish we'd walked a couple blocks down and went somewhere the food was fresh.  I do not know how any sushi chef could serve the old fish we received.

The waitress was very friendly but spoke almost no English.  The sushi chef (from across the restaurant) answered the questions we asked her.  And these were basic questions, such as, "Does the Hamachi Kama come with rice?"

Do not go here, unless you want your stomach to be upset with you for a few days.

I was craving sushi today and I decided to give this place a try. I walked in around 5pm and I was the only person in the restaurant. I ordered two different rolls for my to-go order. Once I got all the way home, I opened my box to discover that they only gave me one of the two hand rolls I ordered and paid for. I was pretty bummed, and the half of my order that I did get was flavorless. The pre-packaged sushi from Trader Joe's is better.

The two people working there were nice, which is why I don't want to give them less than two stars.

Their happy hour specials for beer and sake looked like a good deal. Maybe I would stop in again at some point...ehh, probably not any time soon though.

This is the closest Japanese restaurant from where I live currently and I finally went there few days ago.

I'm Japanese, so I'm definitely picky about where I go for Japanese. The good indicator of a good Japanese restaurant is to test the miso soup. I have to admit that the miso soup there was not good... and another indicator, green tea was not so great. I could not really taste green tea.

However, the waiter was very friendly and provided good service. My friend and I had American sushi ( he is American ) and they were very colorful and tasty. I enjoyed the meal.

It's not so authentic, but I enjoyed the meal there. Though, I know better places to go, so not sure if I would go back there.

Thank God this place finally delivers!!!  I have been obsessed with Asa since I moved out here 4 years ago.  This is really really great sushi -- my favorite in the city.  And...it's extremely reasonably priced for what you get.... not overpriced marina sushi restaurant that's more of a scene.

If you're looking for a scene -- don't go here.  But if you're looking for really great sushi, mellow place where you don't have to wait for a table, and very friendly staff -- go here!  And even better -- just get really good sushi for delivery (I tend to think most delivered sushi is not good).

Always fresh, and I'm in love withe the types of special rolls they offer.  Everything is great and you can get way beyond just the basic, simple, rolls, if you like a lot of flavor.  I don't see them on the Grub Hub menu for delivery, but if you go in, some of my favorite rolls are: Golden Gate, Ciao, Honey, Alaska, A's and Fancy Salmon.

I could go on and on -- but as you've read I really do love this place and am never disappointed.

The spicy tuna here is REALLY spicy.

Well...I mean it's not enough to make you die and throw your food away, but it's enough to start panting and drink all your water. Twice.

I ordered the OMG roll and it was really goood!!! I didn't know it was deep fried though :(. I don't like deep fried sushi, but it was so cool how they sprinkle little cubes of spicy tuna and crab over it. :)

Save your money.  I am new to the neighborhood and thought I would try my closet sushi place for dinner last night.

The verdict- the sushi is no way fresh.  My friend who joined me also noticed an unpleasant smell when we just walked in.  Nothing tasted in anyway special, (having ordered great sounding rolls and sushi pieces) and in the end it made my stomach hurt.  They don't even offer you miso soup to start with, so we ordered veggie tempura which was the best part of the meal.  For the price, NO WAY ever coming back.

When I got home, my roomie asked where I went and after I told him he said "oh yeah, I forgot to warn you.... I have a feeling their fish is frozen."

    No thanks!

Awesome neighborhood restaurant!!! No crowd, no wait, no fuss. Just fresh sushi, creative rolls and satisfying and tasty ramen and udon bowls. Very reasonably priced and very sweet people who work there. The place has straight forward sushi as opposed to what my boyfriend calls "fashion sushi" (not a term of endearment) at places like Naked Fish or Ace Wasabi.

Better than most Japanese restaurants around the City and definately comparable to ZushiPuzzle (which is always over crowded!)

Great stop before heading to Presido Movie Theatre across the street.

Sushi rolls quite good and this is about the same quality as Ace Wasabi's - it does not attract the social crowd that Ace's does but the food quality, rolls, etc.. is pretty much in the same ball park.

This place is usually low on people. I'm not sure if its fact that it is not as hip and cool inside compared to most other spots in the Marina.
Perhaps they need to offer more in the way of a bar or cocktail place - the inside could use a face lift but it is still good and on par with other sushi places nearby.

We were looking for a place to eat dinner with really no options in mind. We walked down Chestnut just browsing places while looking up their reviews on Yelp. A lot of the restaurants were super busy and we didn't really want to deal with that. We came upon Asa and decided to give it a shot!

All in all it was good. We ordered Sake, Beer, Sunny roll, and the teriyaki chicken and spicy tuna roll combo. Service was really fast and friendly, food was good. Roll was kinda small for the price. Total came to be about $60 with tip.

This little gem of an eatery has THE BEST LUNCH DEAL IN TOWN if you are into Bento Boxes.  The service in always great, and for under $10 bucks, you get a great mix of items.

If you choose to go roll by roll, count on throwin down some extra duckets...

Remeber, I recommend Asa for LUNCH (they stop serving lunch at 2:30)...  I have a similar recommendation for dinner - check out my reviews to find it...

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiy! Ugh. I hate hearing that screaching greeting when I walk into a sushi restaurant.

We went here on a Tuesday, basically because our first choice of Ace Wasabi's had a long wait and we were too hungry to bear it. Maybe it put this place at an immediate disadvantage since we were starving...

After asking a few questions we go to place our order, and the waitress seemed to not really speak English- we were asking to eliminate avocado from a roll and somehow she wrote down that we wanted a salmon cucumber roll...huh?!  Wha???  Ugh, whatever.

So when she finally brought the rest of the food, she then had to take extra time to get that last roll out for us without the avocado, so while 3 of us ate, one was still sitting with nothing (sorry, chica, we were about to gnaw our own arms off...couldn't wait for your food from the slow waittress).

My spicy salmon was too spicy for my taste...but the serving of salmon on top of it was good. The quality of the food was fine, it was mainly the service here that stunk. The sushi also took so long that they brought us some free tempura (though I wish they had offered us a free app and not taken the liberty to serve us up the fried stuff...)- then, with my too-spicy-for-me spicy salmon, I was waiting forever to get water from the waitress

Bascially, I wouldn't go back here...I will wait for my first choice next time.

    ASSASUSHA~!!

Before the Annual Yelp Holiday bash, my gf & I decided that we better grab some food before we headed over and started imbibing on the open bar..(WOOT!), so we decided on somewhere close by enough to walk to the Exploratorium, we came across Asa Sushi.  Little unpretentious looking cute shop, with a couple patrons already sitting inside.

We walked in and were immediately greeted with a cheery hello! Seated promptly by a nice little booth by the window, and we perused the menu selection. Not too shabby for such a little place..the prices were a little high, but again, this is the Marina.

We settled on edamame, The Red Dragon Roll & the Spicy Tempura Tuna Roll, a coke & a green tea.  The drinks came out promptly, the edamame was nice and hot.  The rolls came out shortly afterwards, the red dragon roll was really good! I loved that it was piled high with eel & tabiko, the fish tasted fresh & the plate quickly cleaned off. The tempura tuna roll was deep fried and the breading came out too thick, i couldn't taste much of the tempura unfortunately =( boo.

All in all, service was quick, the food came out quickly and was good, though not spectacular.  I've had sushi/rolls at other places that were definitely more memorable.

This place is just okay, I wouldn't go out of my way to stop in again.

We split two rolls, which were a bit pricey even by SF standards. They were fine - not spectacular, not disappointing. There orders were a bit on the small side. We came from happy hour elsewhere with appetizers. If this was it for the night, I would have left hungry. The people working here were super nice though, the atmosphere was friendly and warm.

They had a few tables on a Friday night, but they weren't packed. I think this place might be better for lunch - their lunch specials looked way better (and better priced) than the rest of the menu. If I were to go again, I'd stop in around noon....

Very attentive service.  Decent sushi.  Good value.

The only real problem with this place, like many of the sushi joints in the Marina neighborhood, was that there was nothing extraordinarily memorable.  To be frank, we were intrigued by the "Tom and Jerry" rolls advertised on a chalk board along the side walk... by the time we found out what that was, it was too late to pretend that we did not make eye contact with the nice waitress.  At least this place has creative names for ordinary sushi rolls -- "OMG", "Tom & Jerry"...etc.

I have in previous reviews presented my bone fides when it comes to Japanese food.  This place is definitely not for me.

I actually left most of each plate due to a complete lack of taste.

The sunomono was an absolute joke.  Asa served irregularly sliced kyuri (cucumbers) atop daikon and then splashed soy sauce over the top.

The Katsudon was dry as a bone, lacked a proper tare (sauce) and the tonkatsu was prepared sometime in 2009.

Don't waste your time.  Don't waste your money.  Don't waste the opportunity to have real food at almost any other restaurant.

So glad I discovered this little neighborhood gem.  A friend and I were running late to the movies but wanted a decent dinner (i.e. no Pluto's or Blue Moon Pizza) before the show started so we popped in to Asa -- what a find.  Fresh fish, good selection, reasonable prices, phenomenal service.  It wasn't crowded which worked to our advantage since we didn't have to wait for a table or long for our sushi to come out,.
If you are looking for a "scene" this is probably not the place to come, at least on a Wed. night; however, if you are looking for good sushi in the Marina and to become a "regular" somewhere and walk in and have the chef know your name, Asa is definitely for you.

    Service was fast and great.

    Fish was fresh and tiny.

Rice was . . . from yesterday(?) today (?) not so great if I can make it better at home, people.  Ya, I'm asian, but so?  I shouldn't be able to make it better at home . . .

Miso soup - bland.  Kinda like warmed seaweed water.

Salad - oh, they forgot the salad that comes with your lunch special.  Not so special, now!

Meh.  I left hungry. . . .it's better that ordering more from here.

2 New Year Eve Dinners now. And, last year I did not write a review because I was very sick, and wasn't able to enjoy the meal like I usually do. So....round 2 - this NYE: made reservations and got the best table in the place (at least that is what me and my husband think). They have some amazing options in rolls. I like creativity. We ordered several rolls, including a chef's choice platter.

EVERYTHING WAS AWESOME!!! The fish is so very fresh, the sauces as delightful. The spicy rolls were of perfect spiciness. Lg sake $6 - can't go wrong there.

I definitely recommend this place. And, the area is cute too.

I feel bad writing such a bad review because I think this is a family owned place and the staff is very nice.

But goddamn, if I can taste MAYO in your rolls, that is nasty. If the hamachi, maguro, hotate and uni is mushy and warm and overly fishy (i.e., not fresh), that is nasty. If your guest  orders chicken teriyaki and it looks like the recalled pet food in gravy sauce and is served with those white crunchy styrofoam-y rice noodles and NOTHING ELSE, that is nasty.

Did I mention it was nasty?

I cannot believe all the 4 and 5 star ratings. I see a few who "loved" the avocado rolls (there is no fish in those!)...maybe that is why. The Marina, alas...

    Food/Quality:
The sushi here tastes fresh. The beef gyoza was thin and slightly crispy on the outside and warm and juicy on the inside. The yellow tail and salmon sashimi were both fresh and tasty. The spicy tuna had a lot of spice to it, and was complemented well with the sake I tried.

    Atmosphere:
The restaurant is small and cozy. The tables along one of the walls in the restaurant had benches with comfy pillows to lean against while dining. There were very few people inside, but it was late afternoon on Labor Day when I ate here. It looks like they were placing candles on each table to prepare for dinner time.

    Service:
The service staff were polite and attentive.

    Value:
The sushi was a little expensive for what was offered. However, I will return in the future as it is only one of two sushi places I have liked in the Marina area. I looked over their lunch specials, which look like a good value, and plan on trying one of their specials in the future.

And my skirting usually takes me right up the street to Asa (with iPod in ears to drown out the residual "Sake....BOMB").

Asa is the unpretentious sushi restaurant of the Marina (and it actually is, unlike the Horseshoe Tavern that touts itself as the "non-Marina" Marina bar.  Please.)  It is just plain good.  Prices are good, the sushi is fresh,  tea is great and frequently replenished, and the wait-staff is so damn cute, you just pray that one day they actually will karaoke to the incredibly random selection of songs on loop (you know they know all the words and are merely restraining themselves).

The bathroom has a nice little hand lotion bar that really makes you feel that they are trying their best to make a quaint and genuinely good impression.  It works on me.  The 5th star fade is for the cold.  Sorry Asa, but a small heat lamp in the corner ain't doing nothing!

The fish isn't bad, the people are nice, a decent option for sushi in the Marina.  Have had mostly rolls, not so much the sashimi... The inside is pretty cute, comfortable atmosphere and since its a small restaurant to start even if there aren't many people there it doesn't feel like you're eating alone in a warehouse.

    Pretty quick with takeout.

more like 2.5 stars but I'm feeling generous today.

came here with some girlfriends for a quick lunch and had a bento.... The chicken was super oily, the rice portion was about the size of an egg (pretty small) and there was some sashimi (2 slices) that were just plain awful. I shouldn't have eaten it (it didn't smell very fresh) but sadly I did... Resulting in a bad tummyache the rest of the day.

service was pleasant and decor is nice, but I'm amazed that a place with fish like this can survive... But, it's the marina and no sushi joint there has impressed me all that much.... Not much to live up to,i suppose....

lots of other good restaurants a few blocks away.

My boyfriend and I saw this place when walking around the neighborhood and thought we should give it a try.  It was dead on a Thursday night around 6:30 pm except for one girl that was talking very loudly on her cell phone - so annoying!

Sashimi Deluxe - do not get.  nothing creative to this dish at all.  Also, I hate when I order a sashimi dish and still receive two crappy plain rolls.  I want Sashimi!  I felt like half the dish was nigiri and rolls despite paying for sashimi.  The sashimi only included salmon, tuna, and i think mackerel.

Rolls - my boyfriend got a few different rolls.  The soft shell shrimp roll was pretty good.  Again, nothing to write home about.

The food wasn't bad but I definitely wouldn't go back. Perhaps I'm spoiled from eating sushi in NYC, but I think SF should have better than this place.

Came here tonight for the first time on the street and the restaurant. Happy that I made reservations because this place got packed pretty fast. Small location and their sushi is decent.

The service was ok, but became really slow at the end. I guess they were short handed, but slow regardless. I think I've had better sushi here in the East Bay.

Hi, Jeanie! Thank you for always taking care of us during lunchtime, whether we are oncall (sorry about that last time) or got a group of 6, the service is always prompt, attentive, kind, and personable. You even recognized me elsewhere in SF and said hi! You and your husband make a cute team.

4/5 stars for service and thank you for remodelling the restroom. The fish isn't the freshest, sorry!

So I found parking in the Marina to go to the Apple store and realized that we should just eat dinner on Chestnut less lose our parking spot. We yelped the closest sushi restaurants and Asa's won. Sat at the sushi bar and was very happy with the food and service.

Really liked the Aloha roll and fresh sashimi. The chef even gave us a sampling of milk fish (ok, forgot the japanese name). Will def come back here again.

When I've had a long day and the man's got me down, I come here. It's always cozy and quiet, so you can actually hear your dining partner while you eat.

On a few occasions, I've come here after waiting a ridiculously long time to be seated at A16 next door. I usually get tired of being stared down by the old men at the bar (silver foxes? please!), so I come here to have a nice dinner in good company. The sashimi is fresh, and the service is attentive.

I have tried this place twice -- once for lunch and once for dinner.

For lunch, the bento box of salmon teriyaki was ok.  Not awful or great, but nothing to otherwise recommend it.  For dinner, I had an order of fried oysters and nebayaki udon. The oysters were fried in a doughy batter which is not typical of this dish and which masked the taste of the oysters.  The nebayaki was served in a huge bowl that was only 1/2 full.  The tempura shrimp was soggy and, apart from the egg and a thin piece of compressed fish, there were very few additional veggies in the dish.  Very disappointing on both counts.  My GF had a sushi roll of some sort which was ok.  Rolls are apparently the main form of sushi here, which is at least one reason why I haven't tried any nigiri.  Also had an order of hot "house" sake, which tasted bitter.  So, I would not recommend the food here.

There are many other Japanese restaurants in the City -- two others on Chestnut  -- and, as a result, I don't think I'll be going back to Asa again.
