This place is a dive bar. Not a bullshit dive bar thats actually a place for people to hook up. This is a place for friends to get together and drink cheaply.

$5.00 Pabst with a shot. Nuff said.

Carlos Y: "Is this a gay bar?"

Honestly, I don't know. But cheap PBRs and free bbq on holidays? Anyone can get behind that. And it's not just any free bbq. That was a GOOD, free burger! My only complaint about holiday shenanigans is that the techno they play is SO so SO loud (this may have to do with carlos' query, although he had come away from the bar on a previous day with the same question) that I could hardly hear my friends speak. I hope that the techno isn't a recurring theme because I can't see myself hanging out here and just smiling blankly at my companions as I sip on my classy blue ribbon beverage.

a dive bar's dive bar. the default place to grab a few a in the neighborhood. 4 stars because the happy special confused the hell out of me--it involved math and tokens and beer, things that should, in my opinion, never be mixed (less math! more beer!).

The bartenders are really nice. The owner/manager is really nice and wanted to play pool with us and kept offering games. Its a really cute space, with a some seating right out the doors. Around 10pm it seems to be pretty chill, a great place to sit and catch up with friends. $3 pbr, $5 with a shot. And if you're hungry, there's a papa johns across the street, that's open late!
On some nights, they let people DJ, you just have to call in or sign up early.

This place is awesome!

Friendly bartender, cheap booze (OK, honestly we were drinking PBR's at this point), artsy /divey atmosphere, cool chick DJ playing our drunk ass stupid requests, no one looking at us funny as we literally boogied away the end of the night...

Artland is an interesting bar. Sometimes it is filled with the most diverse crowd of people playing pool or performing at open-mic. Sometimes it's dead. Last night (New Years Eve), my friends and I stopped in for a few after-dinner drinks and we were the only people there. It's a cozy little place. One bathroom is all decked out with tile-mirrors and naked photos, and the other bathroom is completely ghetto. I'd opt for the bathroom on the right with all the photos. I got a healthy pour of whiskey, however, I was charged $6 for Coors Light. And honestly, any place that is going to charge six bucks for a cheap-ass domestic beer can kiss my grits. No thanks. Maybe if I was into PBR, I'd be more inclined to go back.

I'm a big fan of ArtLand. They have cheap beer, a cool atmosphere that's never crowded, a pool table, a featured artist, and usually live music! There's a great open mic night and there are folk music nights... lots of events to keep you coming back!

Some of the music and acts are a bit avant garde, but that's what makes this place fun!

The bartenders here are super friendly. I've come here with crocheting projects -- the scene is really cool and creative, so bring whatever-it-is that you make (be it poetry, knitting, music, art, etc.)!

Art Land used to be an old art store. When it was bought, the owner decided, "eh, what the heck. Let's leave the name the same." Now it's a place to come display your talent in the every-so-magical world of art.

DJ Go-Kiryu spins there some Fridays. Groovy house music will fill your ears while you sip your specialty. Lots of random chairs and couches there to make you feel comfy. A pool table in the back and what seems to be left over halloween props hanging on the coat rack next to the bar. Last time I was there, I dressed up as the Hawaiian dashboard girl. :)

Chill atmosphere and themed nights every night. What's not to love?

This bar will always have a place in my heart. I used to live across the street from it when I first lived in New York and naturally it became my second home.  Friends that I hold dear today were met at this bar.

The street has changed since then and new bars have cropped up but Artland has essentially stayed the same. And that's the way I like it.

Art Land was the place to go in it's particular area long ago... and now many other bars and restaurants are popping up near by.

It is my favorite bar in the world. It is my Cheers, but think more along the lines of dive-y, eclectic, artsy, witchy, etc...

Bartenders always friendly. Long running open mic night on Thursday is always fun. One of the nicer pool tables in the neighborhood, as well.

I've met quite a few people there that have become close friends, so that says a lot.

Even though it's a little rough (ok, maybe a LOT rough) around the edges, this place has a really artsy charm. The bartender and patrons are always friendly, and it's a good place to chill over a drink all night or to use as a starting/ending point for a mini bar crawl through the 'hood. Totally unpretentious and one of the last authentic art-dive places left in the burg. BUT I went last night and PacMan was broken... This is a serious problem. Owner of Art Land, bring back PacMan! I've probably pumped hundreds of dollars through the slots, so pleaaaase come back!

I lived in this neighborhood all my life and never felt as comfortable in any other bar in Williamsburg as I do in Art land. When I first saw this Bar I was a bit skeptical about its first appearance. Was not sure how I would be greeted. After I met the Bartender and the Owner who treated me with such warmth. I couldn't stop going there. My time in Art land gave me the opportunity to meet someone very special who would always hold a spot in my heart. It's not what I went their for but was a pleasant surprise. I have met plenty of friends here. That come from such diverse backgrounds. This is the melting pot of bars for this area. As far as the appearance of this location, the owner loves it like that. Trust me I have try to convince her. it's a no go on that subject. There is an APA League which plays on  Tue and Wed  nights.  On Thursday they have open mic. Great prices on your choice of beer or hard liquor. Just don't drive drunk because the owner won't have it. She will send you home on foot or call you a cab. Like it should be and finally. As a patriot of this bar NO JERKS ALLOWED... To bad I am Over seas now. I would really love to have a Yuengling right about now.

This is a bit of a nostalgia review for me ... I was here a few years ago. Shall I tell? Well, not much to tell, but I was in NYC on extended business and at the time, La Boheme, the Broadway show was playing. I wanted to go and see it and posted something on craigslist. A woman answered to say that she knew of a way to get into the show for a discounted price (this show was very popular) which involved standing in line in the morning at the box office for cheap seats. So I went, stood/sat in line for 2 hrs and came away with two tickets which were in the very first row (supposedly, sight line less than optimal here, but they were fantastic seats. Not quite sure why these are the ones they give away at discount). Anyway, after the show, I had lunch with her, and she invited me to her birthday party a little later in the week. She was having it at the Art Bar. So I trek out on the L into Brooklyn, somewhat late-ish and walk to the bar. Grand St at that time of night is basically deserted, with shuttered stores on the street. I'm walking a fair distance behind another dude. He decides he needs to twirl his switchblade. He didn't actually look back at me, but I guess heard my footsteps, and wanted to warn me that I shouldn't try anything with him. Here I am, more worried about the reverse situation... So the bar. Well, it's a funky place. Not really like any other bar I've been to. Good music and a diverse crowd -- her friends were friendly, and others unconnected with the birthday party aspect of it were also friendly. Drinks were great. Open way late, basically until the bartender decides to go home. And another strong memory of that trip -- taking the L back at 4am. Crammed full like it was rush hour!
