1.) There is no substitute for the coddling/awkward public displays of affection one is subjected to at the hands of a Jewish mother/grandmother.
2.) No, seriously. If you've ever had something wiped off your face in front of all your friends with a spit-covered tissue - when you're 17 - you'll understand.
3.) In the absence of the first two, the next best thing you can do is eat a great pastrami sandwich. After all, look at you. You're so thin! You're gonna fly away if the wind blows. You need to eat! And it wouldn't hurt to call every once in a while either, you know.
So where does one find said pastrami, tongue, corned beef or brisket this good, and in such "oh please God no" portions?
This place. That's where.
ps: frequently, and tucked away on a hand written "specials" board, there will appear something called "Death By Fries". Unless you have a cholesterol test within the next 72 hours, do yourself a favor and order this. -
Review from Ryan B.
Definitely not my favorite place on the UWS. They've got the whole deli menu thing going on here, and that's fine and all, but compared to other similar restaurants in the neighborhood, this place isn't very good.
Not to say the food was bad, but I felt like everything was way overpriced and had little value. They have a good pastrami/cornbeef sandwich here, but it's twice the price and half the size of the one at Lansky's. I think with so many deli's around, you'll get a lot more bang for your buck at other places. Nothing here to bring me back.
On the plus, our waitress was very friendly, and so was the manager who seated us. -
Review from Steve M.
I really wrestled with the quandary of whether I should award Artie's 3, 3.5 or 4 stars. I was VERY conflicted! On the one hand, yes, they are owned by a restaurant group rather than a nice, East European, Jewish family. On the other hand, they're on the UWS near me and when you want fish, of course you go to Barney Greengrass, but if you want deli in this 'hood, where els're you gonna go (other than Lansky's, maybe)?
So, I went with 3.5 rounded down (Lansky's I'll award a 3.5 rounded up to 4 to in a future review).
Also, one time some out of town friends were staying at a hotel a few blocks down from Artie's and when I said, "we can have Chinese, Indian, sushi or deli", they jumped on "DELI!!!".
I wanted to hate Artie's with all my soul, but I must admit - they WERE pretty darned good! The first touch at winning me over was as soon as we were seated they brought out a giant bowl of tasty cole slaw and another filled with pickles (both sour and half-sour), a pickled red pepper and a small pickled green tomato. This stuff was all fantastic.
When the main food arrived, it did not disappoint. As for sandwiches, about a pound of warm, razor-thin sliced pastrami on mine that was as scrumptious and melt-in-your-mouth tender as could be came alongside an extra order of a couple of pretty darned good latkes. The latkes were not the heavy, grated kind that I like and am used to, but a cross between the fluffy flour kind and the more crispy, fritatta type Jewish variety. Both sour cream and applesauce came with. These were different, but yum.
My friend's "Specialty Sandwich, Letter: I" was about a half pound of said pastrami, another half pound of (kinda bland, to tell you the truth, but tender) corned beef, Swiss cheese, slaw and Russian dressing and was a very welcome and hearty heart attack just waiting to happen (see picture). Both sandwiches were served on very fresh, generic rye.
The ambiance was typical UWS diner and the waitress seemed a bit unhappy with her work until we started cracking jokes at her and she let her guard down and loosened up some.
Prices were way better and quality (though maybe not quantity, but that's probably a GOOD thing!) was similar to gyp joints like Carnegie and we definitely left stuffed, doggie bags in hand. Even though this place is corporate, it's close to me and I'd return and will (and that's saying A LOT for them if you know me!). -
Review from John P.
This place is definitely one of the better delis in the city. I love the huge bowls of pickles and cole slaw you get right when you sit down, and the cole slaw is very good. We started with the chicken matzo ball soup, which came with a huge matzo ball and tasted great. For entrees split the corned beef and pastrami reuben, and the corned beef, pastrami, swiss, cole slaw, and russian sandwich. Based on some of the other reviews here we went with the death by fries as a side. By far one of the best things i've ever ate. We only got through half of them and i'm really excited to go get drunk and finish the other half off tonight. The sandwiches were excellent, the meats almost melt in your mouth, and they serve it on some great rye.

Three words.
Death. By. Fries.
Good lord! I never knew i could eat so many fries! Golden crisp fries covered in ranch, cheese, fried pastrami and onion.
After my deadly order of fries, I had the open faced brisket sandwich. By this time i was already kind of full and decided to just eat the brisket. It was tender and so flavorful! Can i have just a bowl of brisket next time?
The service is great here too!
For dessert (i know, what the hell was i thinking?!?) i had a GIANT black and white cookie stuffed with vanilla ice cream.
Too bad i live in Queens. The only thing i needed after my meal was a blankie and a nap.Listed in: Brunchalicious, ...And Sandwiches too!, Burgers, BIG Plates!

I.) Pastrami, Corned Beef, Swiss, Coleslaw, Russian Dressing equates to a gigantic and one of the most delicious sandwich I ever consumed. Now, I'm not just saying it because I think the chef and hostess is wonderful but because the food itself IS wonderful.
Michael and I were trekking from the 9/11 Memorial. We were both hungry. At least I wasn't complaining that I was hungry (=P) but either ways, we got here a little after 1:30pm, the place wasn't deserted nor was it crazy packed but if the joint is still bustling w/ people after lunch and way before dinner then that is a pretty good indication that the place is damn good.
My guy ordered a beer, although I forget which one.
The service and its selections are to die for. We both were pleased w/ our sandwich.
Thank you, Artie's!Listed in: From Dating to…, NYC!!!!

0 stars for service. 4 stars for food.
We ordered 5 sandwiches, a salad, a scoop of tuna fish for take out as my friend's family lives just around the corner in the UWS. We get to the counter, and we ask the girl if there are enough pickles, coleslaw etc for a group of 6 people. She looks at us and says with attitude, "there should be" as if her nails were more important than customer service (I hope she realizes at some point that she gets paid to make sure I am satisfied with my dining experience).
We take our bag and return to our apartment with our sandwiches. We lay everything out and realize there isn't enough coleslaw for 6 people nor are there any pickles, and a whole order of tuna is missing. I hate it when you go to pick something up, have a feeling that the vapid person behind the counter is actually a moron but you give him/her the benefit of the doubt, then get home to realize you shouldn't ever trust people and go with your gut instinct. So we call them to bring what is missing to us (we aren't far away, but they should deliver) and they give us a stink about it. But they say okay okay 5 minutes. 5 minutes go by, no delivery. So one of says, "I'll go get it". Thinking that the delivery guy would get here before our friend gets to Arties, I tell my friend to look out for the delivery guy.
15 minutes later, my friend is back with the order. She got there 15 minutes after our promised 5 minutes, and our missing orders were still sitting on the counter in the restauarant. By the time we ate, everything was cold. The food is good, best Chopped Liver I've had in NYC, but it was difficult to enjoy it considering the poor service and lack of foresight. And who gives 2 half sour pickles for an order for 6 people? Get a clue, Arties... -

Great food, great service, great atmosphere.
I had the sandwich special with pastrami, corned beef and coleslaw with a heaping portion of brown mustard and I must say I was impressed. I even ate the pickles it was served with; and I usually hate pickles!
As for the pastrami, it is deli sliced which isn't my favorite style, I prefer the chunkier version, however do not make the mistake of thinking they cut on the portions! The sandwich was HUGE! I am a big guy and I couldn't even fit it in my mouth (pause for the laughter to stop.)
I'll be back. -

Delicious matzoh ball soup - the matzoh ball is so light and fluffy! And the stuffed cabbage is amazing. If you get the entree (also available as an appetizer) it comes with two sides - I got the egg barley (farfel) with mushrooms and the homemade veggies - all delicious! The pastrami sandwich is great too.
Everything we had was A+ and the waitress couldn't have been nicer.
We love Arties, and will be back! -
Review from Will P.
In a word, this place was a joke.
We went as a gaggle after an alumni event at The Calhoun School, our alma mater, and boy was it sad. For starters, we bore the brunt of truly awful service, where our gal basically ignored us for most of the meal - which took forever to come out.
My omlette was meh, to be charitable, and I saw and tasted my co-diner's tuna melt, which was just sad. It had a partially melted piece of American cheese (who the hell puts that in a tuna melt? yuk.) and soggy bread.
Overall, I'd say avoid this place and try another greasy spoon that will certainly be more reliable. -

There was a time many years ago that the UWS had many good Jewish Delicatessens. You walk in and you had that feeling that something good was happening here. The smells, the sounds I though I was in Foodie Heaven. Sandwich's were plentiful. Regulars were in 3 or 4 times a week. As a kid it was exciting growing up with food that I found to be a great blend of flavors that I could only get in a Jewish Delicatessen. I guess this was the beginning of my love affair with Sandwich's, going to the Delicatessen.
Artie's tried to capture that place of exciting food, Pastrami, Corn Beef, Tongue, etc. All the meats that were probably not good for you, but it was tasty, very tasty. Artie's had the delicious smells and sounds of my memory of a kid ordering a Corn Beef lean on rye with mustard. Yummy..........
I remember Artie's advertising itself as an Old Style Delicatessen. After a couple of years they lost that feel. It became more of a diner that had cured meats. Artie's just became a regular place. I don't know if it began when they added the new front, but the "Delicatessen Feel" they had vanish.
I come here from time to time when I have a fix for Pastrami or Corn Beef and I don't want to go downtown. That Pastrami on rye now is just OK. The Corn Beef OK too. Not the end of the world, but just OK.
I miss the old place. The old feel. That Delicatessen Feel. That waitress who would tell me "order the chicken soup it's good for you".

I stopped by tonight for a quick bite and waited at the counter while three employees ignored me. One of them actually looked right at me but did not acknowledge me. Hey, I've got it!
Maybe I turned invisible, like Patrick Swayze in "Ghost." The man at the end of the counter wasn't "looking right through me." He was actually looking right through me!
Anyway, I left. And while my family has had several pretty good meals here (we live blocks away) we will not be coming back.
Sure way to lose a customer, Arties. -
Review from Tony U.
Goes from 3 to 4 stars because their pastrami is very good. Saved me from subwaying down to Katz it was that good.
Problem was that they ran out the 2nd day I came there.. That sucked.
Loved their Israeli salad, but didn't think their Chicken Matso Ball Soup was hot enough.
Still, a good emergency place to go to when in the mood for a Kosher experience. -
Review from Carol B.
Sssh, this is a secret between me and you. Keep my nephrologist, rheumatologist, boyfriend, mother and kidneys out of this.
So I'm supposed to be on a strict low sodium diet, but the inner-Brooklyn raised Jew in me could not pass up lunch at Artie's today.
After getting lost in Central Park following my unelightening rheumy appt, I caved and decided to take a cab back to the West Side. Once there, I was starving and decided to give Artie's a try.
I arrived in the middle of the busy lunch hour, but I was quickly seated. A bowl of delicious coleslaw and two pickles were soon plopped onto my table. Yum! Coleslaw was yum! Not too watery or creamy, just the right amount of dressing.
One bite of the pickles and I knew that my renal function was about to go out of the window. I took one bite and I knew that I hadn't had salt in months because my tongue nearly fell off. They were delicious, crisp, fresh tasting...probably the best morsels of pickles that I've ever had.
My waitress came over when I was munching on these snacks...and I settled on the Turkey Reuben for my entree. Screw "being good" and getting a soup or salad. I mean, I had already had my weekly sodium allowance by nibbling on those pickles, so could a turkey Reuben be too much worse?
It took a while for my food to come out, but like I said, they were really busy, and I also had a magazine to read, so I didn't care too much.
The sandwich was HUGE. Thick yummy moist slices of turkey rested atop thousand island dressing and sauerkraut...this was all on a bed of nice soft rye bread!
I could barely eat half of this thing. Now I see the appeal in the soup and half sandwich lunch. That's probably what I'll get next time...or soup and one of their delicious looking potato knishes!
Oh and just to clear up other comments about their graded inspection, as of Sept. 14, they have an A!
Again, kidneys forgive me...but I'll probably be back for pastrami soon! -

Small portions...stingy drinks...edible...expensive...and now a "C" rating.
Portions smaller then other deli's in the area
Small glasses with a stingy refill policy on drinks
OK food (not spectacular)
As expensive or more then other deli's in the area = less value
Today, I saw that they posted their inspection rating as they started with a "B" rating then went to an ungraded. Now they show a "C" rating, which they received on 5/4 but did not post it until today 9/2.
Take a pass and go somewhere else. -

Ate at Artie's for the first time in about ten years and thought my pastrami sandwich was quite good and not quite as astronomically expensive as places as Katz's downtown.
My waitress was friendly, but the food was slow to come out and it took FOREVER to get the check. Unfortunately, waiting over 20 minutes after you take the last bite of food to exit the restaurant is a big negative. Also, with no refills on the stingy drinks it adds up very fast.
But it's a hell of a lot better than Big Daddy's. -

Don't come here unless you are starving.
Portions are big.
Food is delish (and it rhymes with Jewish!).
Healthy is not an option.
Must have: the large black&white cookie with vanilla & chocolate ice cream layered between them, a mound of whipped cream with chocolate sauce drizzled all over.
The chef must be a genius. -

Management must be insane because they allow their employees to talk total crap about their patrons within earshot. Antisemetic remarks in a Jewish-style deli? Really? In addition, the amount of wasted food is crazy. Maybe if you hired good employees instead of a bunch of teenagers/drunks who only want to text their boyfriends/are incompetent and barely awake you wouldn't be throwing so much food away.
Foodwise, who pays $13 for a sandwich? Maybe calling something "New York Style" automatically means you must bend over and take it where the sun don't shine. And why do some sandwiches have more meat in them than others? And how do pickles get sand in them? I mean, I know it's free but that doesn't mean the enamel on my teeth isn't important to me.
The one good thing I can say is that their french fries are made fresh. (Always end on a positive note.) -

Ate here for lunch on my first day during a trip to New York... and then the second day... and then the third day...
Killer HUGE sandwiches. Free bowl of whole pickles and a bowl of Cole Slaw with every order. Prices might seem a little high but not really for everything you get.
Tried all three versions of their Reuben and love each one of them.
Service was a little hit and miss. Great the first two days and horrible the third. -

Went here for Passover with a friend and it was so charming. The potato pancakes and matzah ball soup were just what we needed. It was packed and clearly a neighborhood favorite. Our waiter kept messing up our order, but honestly, it made it a more entertaining and memorable experience. He was so apologetic and sweet about it that there was no way it could hamper the experience. Great Jewish food.
p.s. Ask for extra apple sauce on your latkes. They didn't bring enough. -
Review from Phil H.
I love a good Jewish deli and this one fits the bill. Been to Katz, Carnegie, 2nd Ave Deli, among others and this rates right up there with them.
Our waiter Leonard was terrific. Great service and enjoyed chatting with him about his acting career and the food here. When he brought over two large metal bowls full of pickles and coleslaw I was in Heaven! That coleslaw is amazing! We finished it quickly and when I joked that I could eat another bowl he brought over another one even more filled up. Oink-oink!
Had a few appetizers that were super. Grilled seasoned shrimp and mustard based coleslaw. Delish! And another called Death By French Fries. Seriously, I think I gained three pounds just eating this, but it was something you just can't resist. French fries covered in sour cream, cheese and bits of pastrami. OMG! If you are out bar hopping and drunk late at night this is a perfect choice to soak up the booze!
We followed up by ordering the pastrami sandwich on rye - a must in a Jewish deli. Pastrami was super lean, moist, and tasty with the edges having that slight char that makes your mouth water. I did not even have to put that much mustard on it as it was so good no extra flavoring was really needed. Just great!
Being the pigs that we are missing dessert was a not an option. Had this amazing tasting ice cream sandwich that was set in between black and white cookies and drizzled with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Yum-o!
I guess that workout I did in the morning was wasted!
Bright, lots of seating, large menu of options to choose from. Clean bathrooms. Take out and delivery too. Saw many people coming and going as we were there - always busy which is a good sign of a quality place to eat. Bonus for being uptown and easy to get to from where I live unlike the other delis downtown. Got to go back and try the soups next time. Great deli food!Listed in: Places that I love, Deli Style!

Delightful breakfast experience.
The egg omelette with mixed Delicatessen lit up my mood on a snowy/rainy morning. The omelette was very delicious and came with potato pancake or fries. I ordered the pancake cuz fries was too oily for breakfast.
I usually ate little but this time finished the whole thing like a good girl.1 Previous Review: Show all »

The food was tolerable, but nothing special. And prices are too high for a basic sandwich, especially when they're so slow.
The service was bad and I think the staff is racist. I was seated near the kitchen and I heard one of the chefs complaining to another about an order and then made a really unacceptable comments when someone else returned a meal. -

I came here on my last day working at Park Ave and I got to taste a good pastrami which was juicy and very tender. I was a bite surprise by the texture and the taste. I am not much of a meat eater but in this case. I enjoy it alot. I try a few other dishes like the chili dog which was very tasty. The fries was ok in my book but the cookie ice cream was great but it was way too big for 2 or 3 people to eat. The best part of the night was finally got a chance to meet Executive Chef Ben and he was hang out http://w.us at the table which we were having dinner. I am sure we willo hang out more whenever we both have free time. Thank you for a great night!! The food was fabulous!! Next time we will take u to a good noodle place!!!

Review from Jeff S.
Ordered via Seamless Web. Delivery was fast.
I got the corned beef and matzoh ball soup. When I opened the bag, my first reaction was that it basically looked like a sandwich you'd make at home rather than a traditional New York deli sandwich. You know the kind; overflowing with juicy meat and served on massive slabs of fresh rye. Not that I was looking for something ridiculously sized, but for $13 bucks a sandwich, I was a bit disappointed to get what amounted to 2 or 3 slices of corned beef on two minuscule pieces of rye. End of the loaf I guess, right guys? And there was the matzoh ball soup which was OK but super salty. Plus we only got 2 tiny matzoh balls. At $10 a quart I was left with the feeling that it was not a very good value.
I give this place somewhere between 2-3 stars. It's definitely not bad, but I probably wouldn't order from Arties again though, it's just not that special. Barney Greengrass is a much much better option in the area. Hell, it would even be better to wait the 60 mins for Sarges on the east side to deliver. -

Oy. Not the kind of experience you want on your first visit to a restaurant. We came using a mass coupon deal and were thrilled that all we had to pay was $10 for this experience. Management at Artie's could use some serious help.
Anyone who has worked in a restaurant will tell you that the golden rule of waiting tables is "greet the table within the first 2 minutes of them sitting down", especially if there are only 2 tables dining and you are clearly not busy. We waited at least 8 minutes without any offer of water, drink orders or specials.
The food was..well, edible. It was not terrible. It tasted like the food you would get a chain diner (ie. Denny's, IHOP...anyplace that just reheats frozen food and calls it dinner). I have had much worse but I have also tasted much better. The price, however, resembled some of the top-end Kosher Delis I have frequented in the same neighborhood. Other places have the same price for main entrees but manage to taste fresh and well-designed. Artie's just tasted like average cooks reheated staple elements of deli dining and charged a top-notch price.
Also, if you are labeling yourself as a NY delicatessen and you serve foods like potato pancakes, chicken in a pot, and kasha varnishkas (all very classic Jewish fare), I hardly think the Latino satellite radio station is the proper choice of dining music. Atmosphere is half of the experience.
When we finished dining, the busser asked if he could take our plates. My boyfriend said, "you can take mine but could I get the stuffed cabbage wrapped to go? I don't want the other fried stuff..just the the cabbage". He even pointed to the cabbage as a visual reference. When the busser returned with the to-go wrapping, we discovered that he had put all of the fried stuff in the to-go and left the cabbage out. My boyfriend said this was completely opposite from what he asked for; the busser took the to-go container and returned 2 minutes later with a new to-go container with the half-eaten stuffed cabbage. Now, I ask you..when a person takes a plate to the kitchen in order to wrap part of a meal to go, what do you think happens with the rest of the meal NOT leaving the store? Trash, right? We seriously considered where the busser got this half-eaten stuffed cabbage that he initially thought we did not want.
To finish it all off, the waitress brought us the bill and we reminded her that we had a coupon from a major website. Rather than writing down our coupon number, the waitress walked off with my smart phone (as another waitress had done with a neighboring table's iPad) to an unknown destination to show it to the manager. When the bill was returned to our table, the bill was completely wrong. Neither the waitstaff nor the management seemed to know what the coupon was for or how it should be reflected on the bill. It wasn't until we called the manager over that they realized the bill was completely wrong.
There should be a serious re-evaluation of how this place is run. I will not be returning to this poorly run establishment. -

This place has always been in my neighborhood and I never realized what a convenient gem I had so close by.
I admit that when it comes to authentic delicatessen food that I will make the trip to Katz's and Carnegie Deli, when this place probably should rank 3rd behind the aforementioned in my book (and I will make a note to frequent them more often).
We had guests from out of town for the Christmas holidays, and after an abundant family feast the day before they wanted authentic deli food (without the trek).
The place was extremely busy and yet the service was attentive. The portions were plentiful and tasty. It was stated by my guests that the navy bean soup was "The best ever!"
I had the "Brisket Reuben". Tender beef brisket, muenster cheese, horseradish sauce and sauerkraut. I took home enough for two more delicious snacks.Listed in: My Manhattan

We were not impressed - server had a real attitude and what we ordered was not what we expected; atypical corned beef hash and a fatty pastrami & corned beef sandwich.
Maybe there are better food choices but from our perspective there are far better Jewish style delicatessens in this city.

cheesesteaks came, eaten right away
gone insane...BUT THE MEMORY REMAINS
(sorry Metallica, song parodies are covered under fair use)
after having only had a breakfast sandwich and coffee at Dunkin Donuts at 10:30 AM, and then a full day guiding Danielle through the American Museum of Natural History, my stomach was a-rumbling.
we started off with 2 ginormous latkes - crispy on the outside and didn't fall apart. I think Danielle had about half of one, and I had the other 1.5. both sour cream and apple sauce were offered.
some cole slaw and pickles were put out to nosh on, but I wanted to save room for the main course, so I had a little slaw.
main course - a Philly cheesesteak. in a Jewish deli? yes, let's be intrepid. a hefty roll packed to the gills (do rolls have gills?) with beef, cheese, and onions. I demolished the whole thing. note that I didn't have to add salt, pepper, or any sort of sauce to it, as it was delectable on its own.
Danielle had a turkey reuben. I sampled some of it, and it was excellent. I am the person your parents warned you about (no, not a drug dealer, but rather the kid who will eat your food when you're not looking).
finally, out came dessert. this thing was a monstrosity that could only have been produced by exposure to gamma rays - two large black&white cookies with vanilla and chocolate ice cream stuffed between them, a fist-sized heap of whipped cream, and a liberal amount of chocolate syrup drizzled on top. there was nothing left at the end of it all and the chef seemed to be in shock.
what an incredible meal. quality of the food and service were great, and the atmosphere was fun.
after this, I walked all the way to Rattle n Hum - yes, WALKED - to work off the food coma. I am very thankful that Manhattan gently slopes downward.
Artie's, I shall return and continue the conquest of your epic meals... -

I don't understand why this place has been here for years. Ordered the beef brisket sandwich and it was extremely dry. There are much better jewish delis in the area to go to.
