I have been going to Travis for over a year for haircuts. He is excellent. He listens and does exactly what I want, but will also offer good advice or suggestions of style when asked. He also is a great conversationalist. The salon has a nice atmosphere -- I enjoy looking at all the art on the walls.

Nice staff but they did not know that Aveda products contain "cones," or silicone ingredients.
"Aveda doesn't use silicone!" said the guy helping me.
Actually, son, yes they do.
I pointed out the word DIMETHICONE on the label of a styling product.
Okay I ended up buying it, but still, if you are a hardcore no-cones person, you should know that Aveda uses them. -

I had a great partial highlight with Amy this past weekend. She picked great colors to give me just what I was looking for. I love Artbeat and usually make last min appointments, but I would try to reschedule color with Amy again! She has an art back ground so I am guessing that's part of what makes her a great colorist...Thanks - Jamie

I saw Aubrey last week for a haircut. I have nothing but absolutely positive impressions about her, and the salon.
Aubrey was thorough, intelligent, talented, and over all an enjoyable person to be around. She is passionate and knowledgeable about her field. She listened to what I was looking for - and I left with a great cut.
The salon itself is beautiful - exposed brick and stylish finshings paired with excellent music....a perfect mix of trendy & relaxing.
The ONLY thing I didn't care for too much was the full length mirror you are seated in front of - they are beautiful mirrors - but seeing yourself - full frontal and seated (if you're anything like me) is sort of like "woah baby! get yourself to the gym!"-- I guess it took from my own personal confidence from the get-go ---- but hey this could be totally personal. -

I was a Newbie client today and I will be a long time client forever!
I have been searching and searching for the perfect hair salon, and I have finally find it!
Who knew you could feel like you were in a salon in Rodeo Drive on Solano Avenue.
This place was beyond my expectations. For the minute you walk-in. It was so clean and so state-of the art. Not to mention the great art-work they have displayed in the studio which gave this salon such a unique ambiance. The lighting, the brick walls, the dark hard-wood floors, the sounds of urban melody, the smells of fresh products in the air and the taste of licorice tea. And if that wasn't enough, they had those new backwash hair bowls, which are so cool and the spinning over-hang head dryer.
Tabatha from Salon Take-Over, will not find 'one' thing wrong with place and the Owner should be proud.
To start, I read the great views on Yelp and decided to treat my hair to pure indulgence. I was able to make the appointment online which I thought was pretty advanced.
I had Whitney, a rare raw talent as oppose to their saying of new talent. She was super sweet, friendly and did an incredible job on my hair.
All woman love to get their "hair did"; that amazing feeling of feeling so great for a few hours is such sweet bliss.
We all wish we could get our hair done everyday like celebrities/wealthy or at least have good hair days ever day. We all wish we could splurge on getting our hair done more often and we wish we had more time in the morning to do our hair.
But Whitney actually gave me a tutorial on how to use the products and do my hair on my own so when I leave the salon, I can re-create it. I have never purchased salon products after receiving a service, but when I saw how affordable the line was, I couldn't resist.
My hair looks fabulous. It's the best I have ever seen it.
Whitney did everything I asked and more.
I cant wait to go back and I cant wait to get a Brazilian Blow Out, which they of course have on the menu! -

After growing my hair out for three years (I had shaved it when I was a Buddhist nun in Burma!) you can imagine how nervous I was to do anything to it. I wanted some highlights, but really minimal. My hair was so healthy with nothing having been done to it ever! I was really quite nervous that I would get a bad cut or highlights and ruin three years of patience!
I was SO HAPPY with Whitney's work. I brought in a picture of what I wanted the highlights to look like and she did it PERFECTLY! She also gave me a great cut and didn't take off hardly any length (all you ladies know what I'm talking about-when you say "just a little trim" and walk out with half your hair!)
Plus, the place is chill, bright, clean and reasonably priced. I went on a sunday so parking was free.
I've been getting compliments consistently since I walked out of Artbeat.
Thanks Whitney! I will see you again soon! -

Artbeat Salon was a little bit on the higher end of what I wanted to pay for my bridal updo, but you get what you pay for!
Emily came very highly recommended so I saw her for the trial run and day of updo. She was amazing. She listened to what I wanted, and kept it real as to whether it would work with my hair type and dress. I ended up with a great look for the big day. I also had my bridesmaids come in for a wash & blowout/style and they all looked super pretty.
And a huge shout out to the girls at the front desk. They heard me worrying about how super puffy my eyes were that morning and brought me some chilled sliced cucumbers to press on there. It was so unexpected and sweet of them!
On another note:
I also come here regularly for my hair cuts, and highly recommend trying out their stylists. They start out with a mini head and shoulder massage, and their products are great! I leave feeling pampered and the cut is always what I have asked for. -

I went to this salon today for my first time, it was wonderful!! I saw Whitney for my color (only color as I have a current stylist that I adore for my cuts) she was wonderful!! The salon is beautiful inside and out. The staff is friendly and warm. I highly recommend this cute little Aveda salon!

I went here based on reviews from yelp and I was soo happy I did. Not only did I love Amy my stylist but I'm also converted to use aveda products.
Since my haircut I have seen my hair in a whole new way! Not only has she cut my hair but she even brought me in for a consultation where she literally just played with my hair and showed me different ways I could wear it!
Plus she is just awesome in general! And she is a junior stylist! -

These 5 stars are for Star Violet's spa services... I haven't had anything else done here.
I've been putting off writing this review for a long time... mostly b/c I don't want the rest of you finding out about how amazing Star Violet is. But I guess it's not fair to avoid giving her the praise she so deserves, just to keep her to myself.
A 90 min facial with her will, literally, change your life. She has magic hands, a soothing presence, and awesome suggestions about other fun East Bay hangouts she'll share with you if you ask. :) -

I am very particular about my hair. I only go to Aveda salons and have been going to Artbeat for many years now. I highly recommend Emily, she is a talented colorist and gives great hair cuts. The gem of the salon is Starr Violet. She will give you the most relaxing facial of your life. The overall atmosphere and personalities in the salon make it an enjoyable and relaxing experience.
The one thing that could improve: the price. It is a high end salon, but with today's economy I wish there was a customer loyalty program or something. I can't get my hair done as often as i'd like. -

I just got a haircut from Judie and I absolutely LOVE it. As in, I love it so much I nearly sat through a green light looking at my awesome hair.
I have recently moved to the East Bay area and have been looking for a regular salon. I get a lot of anxiety about finding a good hairstylist because I have very thick hair and have been burned in the past.
I went in with an open hairstyle mind after reading the great reviews. Usually I go into a hair appointment with a picture and say "I want that!" but decided to let the professional decide this time. I told her how I usually style my hair and let her know that I don't always spend a lot of time styling my hair, so I needed it cut in a way that could be low maintenance.
I am beyond happy with my hair. Judie explained what she was doing the entire time and even told me a few alternate ways of styling my hair that would work with my thick, difficult texture. I was a little frightened when she pulled out the straightener because I had told her I don't usually flat iron my hair. She must have seen some fear in my eyes because she explained she was straighting it so she could really see the perimeter of the cut. *insert sigh of relief* Also, she straightened it in a way where it did not end up pancake-flat. Just sleek, but with that cool swishy thing when the layers are cut correctly. (FYI, with the texture of my hair, if it isn't blown out correctly it can end up looking like matted Wookiee fur.)
Long story short, (yes, I'm aware it's already long. Oopsy doodles) I walked in a bit of a hot mess and walked out with rock star hair and cannot wait to go back.
Also, extra points for being open on Sundays. Now I will have rock star hair at work tomorrow! :D
Extra points have also been awarded for online booking! I have a hard time remembering to call and make appointments and love that I can pop online and book my appointment in less than 60 seconds. I love instant gratification. -

I LOVE Hilary! She has done my hair a few times now and I am always very happy with the results.
I also got my eyebrows waxed by Starr, and she is really good at what she does. I loved the essential oils and all the little extras she gives :)
I will be going back there for sure -

I had a haircut here awhile ago... just getting around to Yelping it now. I was excited- I had read the reviews on Yelp and this would be my first time at an Aveda salon, plus it had been over six months since my last haircut and I was ready to get my hair looking healthy again. I left feeling slightly disappointed.
I'm a marine biologist, which means that usually my hair is up in a ponytail for a good portion of the day. No, I don't bother styling it before I go to work- anyone who's spent a windy day on the coast knows why. So, I explained this to the stylist, but then said that for other other half of the day when I get to take my hair out of the ponytail, I'd just like it to look good- that's it. I wasn't asking for a crazy new hairdo or anything- I even mentioned that I was open to advice. And I immediately got a "well, if you're not going to style it then there's really not much I can do."
Really? It's not like my hair is particularly unruly or anything. The main reason I decided to go with a more expensive salon was precisely because I thought they WOULD have the expertise to give me a good haircut that could look nice on its own.
I got a cut that looked good with the styling that came after it, but of course never looked anything like that again. But hey, everyone seemed friendly and I even ended up having a nice conversation with the stylist while she was cutting my hair. I just wish nice salons like Artbeat could also appreciate the low maintenance, non-product-using girls too (here's where I admit that I don't even own a hairdryer!)... not make us feel slightly freakish. -

Let's just skip straight to the awesome awkwardness: we're talkin' WAX. No, I don't get my upper lip waxed, my armpits, my legs, or my eyebrows.
Unless you count the - ahem - "LOWER" brows. Now we're talkin'.
But wince not, I come bearing a tale of clean-lined, smooth skinned hope starring a heroine named Rachelle, a container of hard wax and a find that as a general whole, is East Bay solid gold.
As a woman nearing my 30s, I have been getting waxes of all types - soft wax, hard wax, modified bikini, Playboy, full Brazilian - for well over a decade. That is not only a lot of wax, but a lot of experiences, painful, hilarious in hindsight, good, bad and well, even downright ugly. Once you have had a great wax, all others pale in comparison. For a while, I will admit the best wax I had received was in Colorado; it was actually so good that it made me consider scheming a way to continue traveling monthly out of state solely so I could achieve that wax.
See? That good. My pocketbook was aching with the very idea of an essentially $200+ monthly wax. Yikes, was it worth it? Yes... No! Maybe?
Found via Yelp love, I stumbled upon Artbeat Salon on Solano Ave in Berkeley - California, not Colorado - which scores bonus points for many things, including it's proximity to Nature's Express (yup, I'm veegz) and Payne's Stationary (home of the nicest paper man ever.) There she was, a beacon of smiling groomtastic hope and easy conversation from between my... knees? Rachelle of Artbeat: all it took was one session and I knew that this California girl wasn't flying anywhere. At least not for waxing.
Here's what you really want to know:
- I see her for a hard wax modified Brazilian (what most folks would call a landing strip and while her handiwork is amazing if you see me on the street, no, I won't show you.) HARD WAX = LOVE. Seriously. If you have never tried it because you think it will me more painful that "standard" wax, think again! Pop that Advil anyways before if it makes you feel better, but really, it'll only be for your nerves, not your bits.
- Rachelle is super easy to talk to, always smiling and friendly sans any awkwardness that might come from the situation and of course, it doesn't hurt that she's cute as a huihine button (huihine: local island girl) Her work is consistently clean, fast and exactly what I'm after.
- The pricing gives plenty of bang for your buck and I love the ease of booking my appointments online.
- Her space is always clean, warm, soothing and private; the staff is always very welcoming and warm.
Bottom line: if you are heading into a grooming battle of any sorts, Rachelle is your wax-wielding warrior princess. -

Pretty much the best place for everything. Melissa has given me the haircut that keeps on giving. Seriously, my hair is fantastic even when I do nothing with it two months later. This is ridiculous.
Plus, I've been a client of Rachelle's for a while. As far as waxing goes, she's solid gold. No one does it better!
The front desk girls are always so sweet, too. They definitely add to the experience. -

Review from Tiffany L.
San Francisco, CA
It's good that the owner corrected me on a couple of key details. My apologies. I have been so busy with wedding planning that I misstated 2 things. The trial was $65 (rather than $85 that I stated) and I left a $5 tip, and her name was Melissa (rather than Michelle).
My eye doctor (Eyeworks San Mateo) prescribed me Dicloxacillin 250MG Capsule for 7 days. Me getting eye infection doesn't mean others will, but it's important I share my experience. It could very well be the fact that I don't put on makeup usually therefore eye makeup simply doesn't agree with me. Considering that I am the one getting married in 4 days and just finished my 7 dose of Dicloxacillin today, I am in fairly good spirit and have no ill feeling towards Artbeat.
I very much appreciate the corrections the owner made but the accusatory tone ("If it was truly an eye infection ...") makes me never want to come back here.
ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM ARTBEAT SALON'S OWNER:
Dear Tiffany L.
My name is Charlene and I am the owner of Artbeat Salon. I am sorry to hear your make-up trial was not what you were looking for. Thankfully, you did the trial and were not disappointed on your big day. That is the the greatest value of, and the reason for, the trial appointment.
There are a couple of items listed in your review that are worrisome to me as a local small business owner. Any negative Yelp review can have huge effects on my business. I try to address any complaints or issues in the best way I can and always talk to my staff about the huge importance of fabulous customer service. In your review, I don't see anything I can remedy. I can only ask you to reconsider posting this negative review due to your Trial make-up services not being what you were looking for.
We do not have a Michelle working at Artbeat. Your appointment was with Melissa. Your make-up trial was $65(+$5tip) and not $85. Our make-up is cleaned and liners sharpened after every use so an infection is highly unlikely. Aveda eyeliner, as all Aveda products, has many plant oils and plant fragrances listed in the ingredients. The eyeliner or mascara can be irritating to people who may have sensitivities to any of these plant based ingredients. I know from my own experience that I cannot wear the eyeliners or mascara from Aveda for just this reason. The other products do not bother me or my eyes.
If it was truly an eye infection, you must have gone to see a doctor. I would be very interested in getting a confirmation of an eye infection as Aveda Corporate does ask salons to report any such reactions. If you would be able to get the diagnosis of an eye infection in writing from your doctor to me, that would be great.
I am sorry it has taken me a few days to respond to your review. I have been on a camping trip with my two toddlers for a much needed vacation.
I thank you for your consideration,
Sincerely,
Charlene Stratton1 Previous Review: Show all »

I have been going to Artbeat for 3 years. My husband has been an Artbeat regular for 4. The short review: we absolutely love this place and highly recommend it. Overall, this place deserves a 5-star review. Keep reading for more details about individual staff/services.
When I first started going to Artbeat, Hilary was my stylist. I don't have any complaints about her work, but when she was no longer available at the new talent price, I decided to switch. Travis was assigned to cut my hair, and from then on, he was my go to guy. I love Travis Bell. I don't even have to tell him what to do with my hair anymore. He just knows. My hair is thin, fine and generally not the easiest to work with, but I always leave the salon lookin' real good. I prefer to not sitting there in silence for 40 minutes, so I appreciate Travis' stories. That's not for everyone though. Travis has done some fun color work (yay, purple) on my hair. Color is always tricky, and generally, it's really subtle when I leave the salon. You have to give it a few weeks to brighten up. But seriously, go to Travis for your cuts and colors. Hair with Travis = 5 stars.
For the past year, my husband has had his hair cut by Judie. She does a good job, but I cannot believe how long her haircuts take. John and I like to book our haircuts for the same day. John's haircuts were always scheduled to start 15 minutes before mine, but Travis would be done with my hair at least 15 minutes before Judie was done with John's. Judie does good (not amazing) work, but she could really speed it up a bit. It is ridiculous. My husband once had to have his hair cut by someone else because Judie was taking forever with a previous client. Haircuts with Julie = 3 stars.
I once had a facial with Rachelle. Pretty standard stuff, nothing amazing. After having a facial with Meagan Brown, I was hooked. She is so good at what she does and such a sweetheart. My skin has become so much healthier even since I started going in for quarterly facials with Meagan. It's not just a relaxing, pampering treatment - it's effective and long term. My skin was glowing by the time my wedding rolled around. As soon as Meagan left Artbeat, I followed her to her new salon. Spa with Meagan = 5 stars.
All of the girls at the front desk are very friendly, but Marel definitely deserves special mention. Marel is so helpful and attentive. The moment John and I step foot in this place, she knows exactly what appointment we're scheduled for. Whenever I have to call Artbeat for something, I secretly hope that Marel is the one who answers the phone. Front desk experience = 5 stars.
I turned to Artbeat for my wedding hair and makeup needs. Travis, unfortunately, does not do updos. Emily did a wonderful job on my hair. I gave her a few photos, and she put together exactly what I had in mind. The trial run went very well. The updo lasted 8+ hours with no major issues. We decided to fix a couple minor things for the big day. Emily did an extremely thorough job at making sure everything was in place and would last. The process, unfortunately, ran 15 minutes later than expected which messed with our scheduling a little. No issues with the day of updo though. My hair still looked great after midnight! Wedding updo with Emily = 4.5 stars.
I'd have to say that my wedding makeup has been the most disappointing thing about Artbeat. Melissa was assigned to do my makeup. She did a great job at picking colors, blending colors, applying makeup, etc. I wanted it to look natural and not clown-like or overly made up, but the makeup did not last all. I had told Melissa, during the initial consultation, that my skin tends to get shiny pretty quickly. She said we would work around that and offered some tips. The trial run makeup didn't last very long. On the big day, I mentioned that the trial run didn't last and reminded her that my skin tends to get shiny pretty quickly. I'm not a professional makeup artist, but I feel like it might be a good idea to use an oil blotting sheet before you slap on foundation and powder. Nope, she just put the makeup right on. One of my bridesmaids had to touch up my makeup BEFORE the evening ceremony. Melissa's makeup work looked great, but it doesn't last! Makeup with Melissa = 3 stars.
One of the things my husband and I love about Artbeat is how we're treated like VIP. They recognize us the moment we walk in there. One time, John came to Artbeat to buy a giftcard as a birthday present for me. They knew exactly who the giftcard was for. Also, when I came in to Artbeat for my wedding updo/makeup, my bridesmaids were so amazed at how so many people at Artbeat knew me and John. Lots of hugs, congrats and good stuff all around. John and I just moved to NYC, and so far, I'm a little nervous about finding a new salon. If you're in the SF/Berkeley area, give Artbeat a try! -
Review from Lara W.
I had an overwhelmingly positive experience at Artbeat Salon.
At the end of my rope, and sick of looking "just ok", I decided to see if I could turn my afternoon around at Artbeat's spa. I had been to the spa only once before for a facial with a woman whose name I cannot remember (it was a while ago...a few years maybe) and she overused the blackhead popper tool which left me less than excited about returning.
Nevertheless, I love the way this salon looks and since it is close to my house, I gave them another shot.
1. Great phone attitude/presence/voice/tone etc. I felt invited, almost cuddled and that my needs were being listened to right from the start.
2. The facial with Starr was only a mini facial, but it was a fully relaxing time. She is a dear person, with magic hands and my skin truly felt fantastic for days after the treatment. No scary extraction tools used! Great aromatherapy and massage, though.
3. I was then escorted to Judie's chair where I got my first blow-out/style. Judie is personable and skilled: I trusted her from the moment I sat down and she made my hair look way fuller and shinier than it normally is. I was very satisfied---and the price was really great for all of the work she put into it.
As soon as I land a regular job, I want to come here more frequently. I can't stress enough how good I felt by the end of my visit. -

Go to Amy W. or Travis! Awesome salon!
I have REALLY long, thick hair & only get a couple haircuts a year, so I have to live with what I get for a long time and I've always been really happy with this salon.
I always go to a different stylist to get the "new talent" discount ($45 instead of $60). Great experiences with the people, fabulous haircuts, the last two I've had were Travis (altho his are full-price now) and I just went to Amy today and she did a GREAT job, I felt like she really understood my hair and what I was going for and she did this glamorous curled style at the end, I'm really happy! Get her while she's still a new talent stylist :) -

(sigh). well, i received a critique of my review, mainly because it called out a certain stylist. to wit: "I feel as though having issues with a business is one thing (so, comments about Artbeat itself for example...), but commenting about a particular stylist is a completely different story. Don't forget, this person makes their living this way!"
true, so true, but i find it meaningless to review a salon without reviewing the stylist. i have nothing of interest to mention about artbeat as a salon. every other review of artbeat includes a specific mention of the stylist. most comments are gushingly positive, and this is allowed, but my comments were a bit catty, and this is not considered polite, no matter how relevant and true those comments may be. however, in an effort to play nice and ensure good karma, i have revised my review and replaced the actual name of my stylist with a pseudonym. anyone who wants more information about my experience with said stylist is welcome to send me a message. the altered version of my original review follows:
********************************************
boooo. i was not feeling the love from *star* yesterday. but let me start at the beginning. years ago i had very short, kinda butch hair, i mean really cropped. the look was fine while it lasted, but i have been growing it out for the past 2 or 3 years. i am lucky if my hair grows 3 millimeters a month, so getting a haircut is an exciting semiannual event for me and i was really looking forward to the experience at this highly recommended salon.
*star* frustrated me because *star* did everything by the book. there is nothing i can actually bitch about technically, but we had no chemistry. *star* started with a nice scalp and shoulder massage, the shampoo felt good of course, but *star*looked bored the whole time. kinda sullen. we each made feeble attempts at small talk, but like a bad date, we really had nothing to say to each other. long story short, i left with a decent haircut but not the STYLE i longed for. should i blame that on *star*? is my lack of style my own fault, really? probably, but i am still not going back. -

The two stars are for the customer service and friendliness of the staff. Otherwise my experience at this salon was far from acceptable.
I had a maintenance cut here on a short length style that I've had for more than a year. It has been several days since my haircut and little 'tufts' of hair are sticking out in random directions and for some reason my stylist cut portions of hair on the top of my head so short that it sticks straight up.
This is not what I requested and I suggest that you go to another salon where they have higher standards in their hiring practices so you won't have to worry if the stylist that you get will do the same to you. -

Awesome salon on Solano Ave.
Aveda salon and art gallery all in one. Even so, it's an incredibly down-to-earth space minus that hoity toity feeling that pervades other salons.
My stylist was Noel. He was a pleasure to work with, a good listener, was warm and welcoming, and was a complete natural at knowing what to do with my hair. Didn't feel nervous in the least and am very happy with the results!Listed in: Solano Ave., Spas and Salons

I was a gray-haired 50-something-year-old who felt old and worn out every time I looked in the mirror. I had been going to a friend for 20 years for haircuts, but just wasn't happy anymore with my look.
Genevieve at ARTBEAT SALON in Berkeley was recommended to me and I went with moderate expectations.
She blew me away.
Genevieve is so artistic and creative. My hair cut changes a little bit every time, which I like, because I get tired of the same old look.
Also, did I mention she made me a BLONDE. Gorgeous highlights that aren't so much lighter than the gray was, so I wasn't shocked every time I looked in the mirror -- just happy to feel a little bit younger and more vibrant.
And last but not least, she is super calm, cool and collected. I feel comfortable knowing I'm in the hands of a pro.
I'm a regular customer now. Many thanks to Genevieve and Artbeat Salon! -

We came in and were satisfied that they had an opening for a simple haircut. We were offered drinks but they never came.
The people here are friendly and the interior is very nice. It was clean and well stocked, though a little cold. The seemed to keep the customers moving quickly. The parking is kind of a pain, its a little hard to find and if you need serious work, over 2 hours, you better bring someone to run out and take care of your 2 hour limit parking...
The haircut went smoothly and for $65 you'd expect something pretty nice, yet it was just ordinary. Included in the price was styling, but she pretty much just blow dried and brushed it a little. For the service, I would've expected $40 or so not $65, it just wasn't above average at all.
I have also been here for a consultation to dye my hair, which has been heavily damaged. The woman consulting me was not nice like the other people who are at least pretending to be nice. She wasn't mean either, she was just condescending and treated me like my concerns were ridiculous. The price for the dye job without haircut was nearing $200 which is steep. I wouldn't mind paying that much if she had seemed to actually care about my hair at all. After all, if she didn't do a good job or just average like the hair cut, it'd be at least a year before it'd grow out. I do not like considering wearing hats for a year because someone regarded me as $$$...
Maybe, that's why I got this kind of consult from her of all people though, to scare away business from people that weren't awesome enough to have the privilege of getting their hair done by her. -

I have Been going to see Rachelle for waxing services for over 5 years. I adore her and her services. She is calm, patient and most of all KNOWLEDGEABLE! Anytime I have an issue or question she is there! She has not only helped me with my waxing, but has become a dear friend. When you go to Rachelle, you get the best!

I had an appointment last Sunday and was supposedly "checked in" and was asked to wait.
I was reading a book and lost track of time, when I finally went to see what was going on. Apparently, the receptionist forgot to check me in. (How this happened is puzzling, given she looked my name up in the computer)
They decided to book another appointment with a client since I was invisible, yet sitting right in their line of sight. The receptionist asked me if I could wait until the other client had received her service. I will have to say this was a complete outrage. This might be the worst customer service I have ever received. Please keep in mind this review had no reflection on my hair stylist, I do like her.
I will not return, it was quite troubling to be treated in this manner.
The owner contacted me and apologized...I appreciate her response and have adjusted my rating. -

OMAR is the man!!! He's new to the salon and moved here from Florida in July. I was a first time Artbeat customer, but now I'm an Omar follower for life. He did my updo when I was a bridesmaid during labor day weekend in 35 minutes flat after I showed him a picture of what i wanted on my iPhone. My hair looked amazing that day! He did my cut and full highlights the day before the wedding and I got so many compliments on the color! I'm not going to any other hair stylist as long as I live and as long as Omar is in the bay area!!! LOVE him!!

I found artbeat on yelp and I am happy i did. I used to be one of those people who went to supercuts because I was too cheap to spend money on a good haircut. That is before I realized how good a "good haircut" can be.
I love the Aveda salons. All the products are natural, they don't pressure you to constantly dye your hair, and get this: they listen to what kind of haircut you want!!! My favorite part is that they don't use razors unless you request it (which made my hair frizzy and left me looking like Tarzan's wife!).
The people here have experience and know how to cut hair. It is worth the $60. To give you an idea about the experience the stylists have my friends commented on my haircut that it looked so natural and fitted me so well they didn't even notice I had a hair cut....so yeah.
For a personal suggestion, take an hour off of lunch from work and get your hair cut. If only it was everyday I could get a head massage, and walk out looking amazing!! Talk about stress reliever! -

Went to Yelp when I needed a new stylist and I'm so glad I did. Tracy at Artbeat gave me the best cut I've had in ages. I sort of knew what I wanted, and she was willing to listen, but she also added in some of her own suggestions. She ran everything by me and only did what I was comfortable with. The result was what I wanted, taken to the next level. The salon was clean and every cut I saw finished was awesome. I am going back in October for a cut and highlight with Tracy.
UPDATE:
I got braver this time and asked Tracy to give me a much more drastic, short cut than I've had in probably a decade. It turned out so well. I have never gotten more compliments on my hair than I'm getting now. I also decided to do some highlights and they weren't at all "stripey" as so many highlight jobs are. They look perfectly natural. In fact, my husband can't even tell I got highlights, he just thinks my hair looks "shinier" than ever before.
I'm hooked. I"m definitely seeing Tracy from now on.
UPDATE: 4/16/2008: I love Artbeat, but Tracy has now moved on to a new salon and I have to follow her bc no one does my hair and highlights like Tracy. She's now at Vine Street Salon: http://www.vinestreets.... -

So, I can put together outfits, apply some makeup any day, but I am simply useless when it comes to creating that 'coiffed' look with my hair.
I found myself in dire need of a last minute haircut and style, in a desperate attempt to look presentable for my husbands friend's house warming party, so I made an appointment at Artbeat Salon. I had walked by several times and noted the unique space, wanting to give it a try.
While I was pleased with my experience, it seemed incongrous. I got a great haircut and style, yet she was pleasant and professional.
I found quality people and quality products at this salon, and may return for more services.
As for the art-- I was not particularly impressed, but I must admit I have more traditional taste- I find the naked ladies of Botticelli more memorable than the contemporary political cartoon art, but the salon clearly strives to give emerging artists much needed exposure, and I respect that.
It is worth a visit to see for your self. Actually, I will give it another try next time I am in town, just to see if the improved, or was it a bad day? -

Artbeat's new location is excellent. Big, open, airy, calming.
I have had personal experiences with Charlene, Leilana, and Noel all of whom were great.
I've gotten my hair cut twice here and both times I was very pleased. Down to earth, friendly service with attention to detail.
I took my sister here to get her hair done for her wedding and everything went smoothly. We came in for a test run a few days prior to make sure we were all on the same page.
The staff is all laid back and fun.
Love this place. -

I have to say that this review is long overdue and I wish I could remember the name of my stylist because she was awesome. This was my first experience at an AVEDA salon and I don't think I'll ever go to a non-Aveda salon again.
My friend and I went here to get drastic changes to our hair. I had bangs cut and she had her hair cut into a short bob and coloured. We went with the cheaper option of just going with the regular hairdressers rather than the more experienced ones and all I have to say is that if this is supposed to be baseline, the more experienced ones must be incredible.
Both our haircuts turned out wonderful and the aromatherapy massage beforehand was truly relaxing. They play great music and are happy to let you sit and relax without incessantly talking your ear off. While it wasn't the cheapest cut (50$) it was an amazing deal considering the quality of the cut and the products that are used. Even if you go to the bottom-of-the-rug places you still end up paying 20-30$ for just a measly trim in Berkeley. This place is worth the extra expenditure.
The salon was immaculate, the people really friendly, overall a great vibe, made you want to stay and hang out afterwards. They also got a plus in my book because they were recycling the clippings from the haircuts to be used in the Bay clean up after the oil spill.
Really, if you're looking for a great cut + a great experience, this is the place to go. -

I do a lot of online research (restaurants, etc) and as most people know, it doesn't always work out. I felt I needed a new do and was looking for a place that had a reputation for quality service. I was impressed with Artbeat's rating and decided to give it a try.
When I called I wasn't sure who to ask for because all of the stylists received high ratings. They told me that Noel would be my stylist. His bio portion on the salon's website claims that he is "especially skilled at listening to each client's needs and fashioning a hairstyle that will fit their lifestyle."
So true. I highly recommend him.
I went in there needing a change but nothing too drastic (at least for now). He cut my hair exactly as we discussed and gave me confidence in returning at a later date to perhaps take the next step (a more drastic cut). He has an eye for what works and is incredibly skillful. He's also extremely nice and a great conversationalist.
If you want need a cut and style - see Noel. -

I got a hair cut this week at Artbeat that was just okay. Not the worst haircut I've gotten, but certainly not the best.
Things I liked: the space itself. it's a neat salon with open beamed ceilings, nice set up. comfy and modern.
Things I didn't like: 1. the parking sucks. It's not their fault that Solano is super busy all the time and it's hard to find parking, but it's drawback. I left my house with plenty of time to drive there and look for parking. I drove around for a while though. 2. I know that you need to make money and that you need to get people in and out, but when I'm paying you a lot of money, I expect a little more attention than the requisite 45 minute salon experience. It's an Aveda salon for pete's sake! My scalp massage was the quickest massage I've ever gotten, the stylist's scissors were moving so effing fast, I barely got to enjoy the experience.
In short, if you're looking to get a QUICK expensive cut, go here. If you'd like a pampering experience, don't. -

Nice well designed interior. Friendly competent workers. Noel did a great job on my very short hair, it' still growing out very nicely 1 month later and I didn't have that week of it looking bad while growing in.
I tend to have troubles since I have slightly curly hair, so even though I keep it short, if you don't cut it just right it gets frizzy and messy. Noel tamed the beast that is my hair.
The prices are high but on par with other local top notch salons and I felt more comfortable here then I have in other high end places, less attitude and more space overall. -

LOVE IT!
I'm still receiving compliments a full month after my haircut.
You should KNOW how important hair is to a girl, particularly to me. I have great hair, that looks good long. Is that hard for stylists to understand?
Not for Melody Jones, she whipped my hair into shape, gave it a rocking style without taking off the length.
I love getting stylized in this salon; the art work, the funky stylists, the entire vibe was spot on.

I have been to Artbeat a few times now, and I love it.
1. Haircut with Whitney: Start off with scalp massage, which is my favorite. Then the wash, cut, and blow dry. She is very attentive, is careful with how much she cuts, and does a GREAT job. I always walk out with perfect hair!
2. Eyebrow Wax with Rachelle: She was very careful to look at the natural shape of my eyebrows, and I loved the end result. Very detailed, friendly, and sweet.
3. Eyebrow Wax with Starr: Very friendly, very precise, and I love the natural look she gave my eyebrows. She uses this imported wax, and you can hardly feel a thing.
Overall friendly receptionist, good layout, always interesting things to look at. I've never had to wait too long to make an appointment.
