This place was recommended by my son's preschool teacher.  We decided to take him for his 4th birthday.  He had a wonderful time.  It's a great place to take kids who are between 4-7 years of age.  They really let you use all your senses.  There's a station for doing arts and crafts, play house in a room, play dress up and have stage performances, play music, play with water and pots and pans in the backyard.  The 2 hours we stayed there went by really fast.  The staff was really nice.  One thing that's good about this place, in addition to your child's learning experience, is that they also donate money to kids in need in the Sacramento area.

The one thing I don't really like is that in downtown Sacramento, you have to pay for parking and it's limited time.  We were able to find a 2 hour parking and it was more than enough time for us.  The studio also has stairs and doesn't have much room if you bring a stroller with you (which we had).  If you have an infant or a small child that doesn't walk yet, bring a carrier if you can. Other than that, we will definitely come back here another time.

Our family friends told us about this place and it was awesome! My daughter is 3 years old and my friends girls our 2 and 3.  They had so much fun dancing, dressing up, painting, making crafts and playing outside!  It's very clean and the staff is super friendly.

    The kids love ArtBeast.

My seven year-old goes for the unlimited art supplies, while my three year-old prefers the rocket ship, magnetic Tinker Toys, the play stage, and outdoor musical instrument set-up. ArtBeast also features an indoor play house and kid-sized kitchen (no power), as well as a soft play area for the under one year-old set.

The staff is kind, helpful, and has the unenviable job of cleaning up after each project. While parents do their best to help out, the staff does the heavy lifting, using non-toxic cleaners to wipe down painting tables, the art wall, etc.

The cost is $8 per person; adults are charged for the first adult and allowed one helper/spouse. The cost is akin to going to the movies for two to three hours.

I think that my seven year-old will max out at ArtBeast around age nine or ten, but for now she still loves going to ArtBeast on lazy Saturday mornings and on rainy days.

Note: Art Beast is also a location where you can host a birthday party or special event. They also sell memberships and bulk tickets at a reduced cost.

As a mom of a toddler, I am always looking for fun, family friendly activities that are inexpensive (or better yet, free). We LOVE Art Beast. The classes are engaging with just enough structure to provide guidance, yet are not so structured that my 2 year-old is going to be frowned at for doing his own thing. We can spend an entire afternoon there going from floor to floor, back and forth between arts, crafts, games and music.

$8 a person is a little pricey when you consider that you have to pay for both your kid AND you, but an additional adult is free and admission is tax-deductible. A great way to support a local business, educate your child, and promote a non-profit charity organization all at the same time.

GREAT for rainy days!! My 22 month old and I have lot's of fun here, the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because it is pricey and the staff could be a little more energetic. Overall it is a fun little spot to do arts and crafts, imagine, run around, make music and have fun. Can't wait to go again and wish I could afford to go more.

If you have a kid under 7 or you yourself feel like a kid under 7 you need to go here. This place has everything a kid wants and needs to be creative and then some. Kids and adults can get lost in their imagination and spend the entire day here just being creative. I think I brought home a ton of stuff my son painted or made while we were here. He wore himself out and still talks about when we went. I plan on taking him more often as he loves it here and so do I.

On top of this they give proceeds to a charity call the tubman house. The charity helps kids with kids facing homelessness.  GO HERE. enjoy it. Support the local art scene and a local charity.

The parents' answer to question: How can I keep my kid busy for the rest of the afternoon?

    Top reasons to go here:

    1. Admission fee pays for needy children.
    2. Can make a mess and someone will clean-up - instantaneously (I'm not kidding, we move from station to station and there is literally someone following us cleaning up the mess we immediately made)
    3. Parachute on the top floor - kids love to burn all their screaming energy flapping away with the rainbow parachute or running around underneath it.

Updating the review -- ArtBeast called and seemed very concerned that I wasn't 100% thrilled.  Unfortunately the woman called right before I had a work meeting so I was trying to tell her all my frustrations in about 30 seconds, but she did at least ask if there was anything she could do to make it better.  At this point, i just hope the late-delivered invitations don't result in a low attendance, bit there's not much I can do about that now.

    ----
Not too impressed at the moment.  Dropping $275 for a birthday party - no phone call to confirm receipt of payment or which date was reserved (you have to submit two choices).  Had to call them twice to get the information.  No birthday invitations sent to me, and when I called, got told to "drop by" - well, Midtown's not exactly convenient for me, so I asked that they be mailed.  Guy said he'd have so and so call me back for my address.  Yeah, didn't get that callback either.  SERIOUSLY considering forfeiting the $120 deposit and having the party elsewhere.  Not very professional or organized.  I wouldn't mind so much if the fee was more reasonable, but for close to $300, I expect more.

One of the mysteries of the world is how this place has 4.5 stars on Yelp!

First, I'll be blatantly clear. I am NOT, I repeat,  NOT, a germaphobe.  Actually, if I think its dirty that means that it should be either thrown away or thoroughly disinfected before use.

That said, I found ArtBeast to be so dirty and disgusting that I spent the entire 2 hours I was there trying to figure out why my friend and I spent $24 for her kids to play in an environment dirtier and messier than anything she'd EVER find at her own house.

Look, I agree, the idea is nice. Somewhere your kids can go play and dress up and do art and you don't have to worry about anything.  BUT, Here's where they get you--The place is flat out messy and the parent does all the work.  The clothes for the "dress up" are tattered, dirty and are put on and taken off by dirty kids all day.  You don't need an "A" in health class to know that's gross.  The amount of filth on the walls and floors was unbearable, even for a small amount of time. Then, YOU (the parent) do all the cleaning up after your kid.  For that much money I kind of thought there would be a few employees in a room constantly wiping or cleaning or picking up, but, no, not even close.  You set your kid up to do the art. You wait around to drag your kid to the ONE bathroom and try to rinse them of the paint and chalk they've gotten everywhere. You clean up the tables after. Its all YOU. I think its fine to pick up after yourself but can't you just do that at home? Why pay to do it somewhere else that is dirtier and germy-er than your own place?

Since they expect parents to take care of everything I think it would be nice if they considered that parents require space and offered a  little more room for them to stand and/or sit.  In any given area you have tons of children doing their thing and several parents trying to help their kids and at the same time stay out of the way and stand along the walls like prison guards.

Here's my alternative: It is a nonprofit so just, avoid the germs and stress and donate money to the ArtBeast then go take your kids to play in a park, let them roll around in some dirt, go buy some 99cent art supplies from BigLots and a shirt you can throw away, wash them up, put them to bed and sleep easy not  worrying about what they were exposed to while playing at this place.

I had heard about ArtBeast from friends and co-workers so I suggested it to my wife as a place to take our 6 (nearly 7) and 4-year old boys. They liked it so much, we came back again the very next day. With 3 floors of fun, plus an outdoor patio, my boys have a great time without getting bored. Within two days, my children have spent nearly 6-hours at ArtBeast and they're already talking about going back.

ArtBeast combines art activities with play areas and allows children a save environment to express their creativity and get their hands dirty.

As others have stated, the individual visit price is $8 per child and the same amount for parents. However, a monthly pass is only $75 and a summer pass was just under $200. While its not cheap, the money is going to a good cause and the full summer is comparable to what you would pay elsewhere for one week of summer camp.

ArtBeast is definitely geared to the younger child and I have a feeling that my oldest won't be as interested next summer when he is 7 going on 8. However, I'd say that while the kids are young, this is a great addition to the Sacramento area and a fun place to take your kids.

I also noticed that they do birthday parties and this would be a nice alternative to the standard pizza parlor party.

What a fantastic little place to take your budding artist to!

I found out about ArtBeast from a meetup group I belong to and also from a former co-worker of mine who brought her daughter here for some creative play.  My husband & I decided to bring our rambunctious 2 year old here to get his energy out and for him to explore his creative & artistic side with other kids.  The target age group is 0-6.  I would say that is accurate.

Admission is $8 per child/adult, which is not cheap, but you can stay as long as you want.  Two adults & one child costs only $16 (the extra adult gets in free).  They are a non-profit group and proceeds go to the Tubman House (see ArtBeast's website for more details). They are open daily from 9am-6pm.  We went on a Sunday and it wasn't too busy. I heard that it can get a bit crowded on Saturday, so you might want to consider going during the week or on a Sunday so your kid won't have to wait for an easel to use.

I was excited about their open play policy (as was my munchkin).  My son had free reign to paint, sculpt, bang on drums, bang on a piano, splash around with water, dig his hands in dirt, wear funny hats, and just run around.  It was great for me, because I didn't have to clean up.  (Of course, I was keeping close tabs on him, just to make sure that he didn't get hurt or accidentally hurt others.)  They have a mock NASA space capsule, which he had fun playing in, too.  This place is basically an artsy playhouse with different floors (including the outside patio area), for your child to have creative fun, be it with arts & crafts, music, or drama (pretend-play).  I was really pleased with the set-up of this place.  The staff was really polite and helpful, too. Our son made a couple of paintings, which we were able to take home.

We'll definitely be back for our little Picasso to make more masterpieces.

We had so much fun here! We went on a cool day in March, and it was extremely hot and stuffy inside. Hard to play upstairs with the heat. It is also a bit pricey for the memberships. The concept for this business is great. So many different art projects to do! Also, my two year old loved the kitchen/bedroom area, as well as the downstairs music and imaginative play area. I loved how the used recycled goods to make the castle and spaceship! A definite must visit!

Since my last review and first visit, we've been back so many times... We did it. Annual members, right here. Check out the pricing on the website above- well worth it. We've been three times this week, and that's without the classes (next week we're gonna brave the ballet/tap class, even if I have to wear a leotard myself- read: no.)
It's cool to come in, grab a cup of coffee or tea, and start crafting/painting/sculpting. They've done well, and have even given ME ideas for home. They're very creative, and the teachers I've spoken to (I did a craft with one while my kid painted the wall) are chill. Outside is fun no matter weather, and there is soooo much to do, it helps when you're not feeling like a Social Sally  that day (sometimes I just want to relax with a book or lose my mind with the scented play dough) it's a great place for then kid in your life to build social skills, plus, they're open everyday. Also, you can donate items to the wish list  for Tubman House its tax deductible, or just good karma. Check it out.

This was great.  It's a 3 1/2 story space full of love and art.  All of the money you might spend here goes to Tubman House, a home for young homeless parents, and what you get is so much more.  And yeah, we went on a crowded Friday afternoon on a rainy day, and it was still awesomeness.  It reminded me of Art From Scrap in Santa Barbara, as well as the Stockton Children's Museum, but it felt more "owned and loved", more "community" than those other two places.

The basement: every corner something exciting is happening, from the Dress Up clothes, to the Puppet Theater, to the Tin Can Castle, to the Nasa Pod, to the Stage with instruments, to the quiet dollhouse.  Your kid could come here with no friends, and still have a good time dressing up and trying to climb the padded trees.

The welcome room: cubbies, coffee for the moms and dads, friendly desk staff, tee shirts and other goodies to buy.

The Art Space: little tables full of frills, craft supplies, letters, glue, etc. Sit down and make something.  Or head over to the Moon Sand table and get lost in your own thoughts (like my kid did for about an hour, until I dragged her away.)  Or paint on the wall.  Or paint at an easel.  Or get some clay under your fingernails. You could opt, on a nice day, to head out to the garden where there appears to be interactive sculptures and lots of seating.  Or head into the room adjacent...where there is a:

Loft: climb away.  Pretend you have a little house.  Pretend you are king/queen/kid of the castle.  Jingle jangle the wall sculpture.  My kid did not like the smell in here, but it smelled to me like beeswax wood treatment.  Knowing Bridget from a past life, it probably was.

Upstairs: a wacky room we did not explore, and a dance floor/mirrored space that looks welcoming.  They were doing a class in there that Beanie was not keen on (I wanted to head in, I saw people making Pirate Ships with masking tape and toilet paper rolls.)  But we headed down to Moon Sand.

And then we made it down to the drama/puppet room, where we stayed.

Mommy read old Bon Appetit magazine editions and drank organic coffee, Beanie ran around in a red tutu and tried to talk other kids out of wearing the dress up shoes so she could wear them, jumped around on the stage, sang, played with puppets, did a little shimmy in the castle, changed clothes 4X, and I finally got her out of there by telling her I was going to get a parking ticket, and I was going to pay it by raiding her piggy bank.

She passed out in the car.

    Great rainy day.

While I agree with most of what people have said about how wonderful ArtBeast is, there is one thing that most reviews seem to skip: the place is expensive!

Yes, the money is going to a good cause (the Tubman House), but  to charge $8 a child and then charge an additional $8 for the parent is a bit steep. The $60 monthly pass is better, but still not exactly a bargain.

Other than that it's a fun place to play. We might even go back.

A GREAT place for young kids!  My 2 year old son loves it there, and I find the atmosphere relaxing as long as you go early - like when they open - before it gets too crowded.

Good customer service by a young group of workers.  Yes, the price is a little high, but I like where the money goes and the cost of all those art supplies alone isn't cheap!!  Fun place!

2 thumbs up from my 5 yr old daughter! took her here today jut for some Art filled sunday. we were literally there from 11-4. She painted on the easel, the big plastic board, made paper ornaments for the christmas tree, played dress up and astronaut with her new friends in the basement, played on the mats and "tunnel" on the 3rd floor, went back to the 2nd floor to spray paint.....
wow! were very busy! what a great way to spend on a rainy sunday.

the staff was exceptional. very nice and constantly checking to clean up any paper confetti on the floor or wiping down the plastic board or drying the painted pictures and replacing the easel with clean new sheet of paper.

Another reason I really like the place is because it's a non-profit organization that helps women and small children. 100% of the proceeds go to the charity.....(i'm sorry i forgot the name but im sure i can look it up later) what a wonderful way to give back to the community. it's a win-win situation! our kids have a lot of fun while we encourage their artistic side and at the same time we are helping other moms and kids.

last but not the least, you get to take home any artwork you and your child made!

LOVE THIS PLACE! we are definitely going to be regulars!

Thank you Art Beast, for taking a otherwise hectic experience and turning it into a relaxing, fun event. I had my 5 year old daughters birthday part at Art Beast and loved it! I am not a fan of the waste that come with birthday parties, the paper cups, plates, streamers, plastic table covers. Pointless and disgusting to me. Art Beast, used real table and silver ware, flower vases filled with daisies and such, linen and  even a fabric happy birthday sign. They set everything up, allowing me to relax before all the kids arrived. When the children did show up, they ate, did a craft project then had free range of the place. I loved it there and visit often. What a better place to do all those crafty art projects that are just too messy for home! And it is a non profit..  Win Win! Stick around Art Beast, stick around.

Great place for kids to explore and create.  Only downside for me is the bi-level play areas.  One child enjoys painting while the other enjoys the dramatic play downstairs.  I just don't like them being separated - kind of wish there were two of me!  The front door is in between the two also, so I worry so much about that.  Only thing holding me back from going again is that I need another adult to go with me so we can divide and conquer :)

We dig ArtBeast!  My wife and 2-yo daughter have been there many times (I've been once), painting on the easy-to-wipe-off plexiglass walls, sponge-painting on one of the myraid art tables, painting on butcher paper on easels and hanging the artwork up to dry and take home, pretending to cook in the miniature kitchen, climbing on the (smallish) indoor play structure, dressing up in the costumes and dancing on the "stage" downstairs.. "washing" doll-babies in their tubs on the nice patio out back, banging on the various metal plates, pans, out back... Lots of fun things to do (including activities that I haven't mentioned), and the one kid yoga class we did was great (the instructor was tremendous).  The staff is very friendly.

I am curious how they will handle increasing popularity -- we were there over this Christmas break and the place was a zoo -- which detracted somewhat from the experience (is there a capacity limit?). We've been there when it's been empty on a regular weekday morning, which was anomalous but awesome...  and at utilization levels in-between..

Awesome place and we will support them as much as we can.  They may need to think about an expansion at some point -- it's that good.

I agree with the previous yelper who said they almost didn't want to share - this place is amazing and we love it.  We make a 35+ minute drive as often as we can.   I love love love this place!

My son is almost 3 and we can spend 4-5 hours here on any given day.  We typically bring snacks or a lunch and take a break to eat outside on nice days.

The art studio is amazing - everything you can imagine to create something and then some.  There is something for everyone - we've made paintings, pictures, puppets, robots from recycled materials, nameplates, and all kinds of other cool stuff.

Once I'm worn out on art (it does take parental supervision for younger kids, so enjoy it!), we head in the loft or upstairs.  If there's no class going on, we make use of the studio or I let my son have free in the other room (which has rings and mats and cones to use as an obsticle course which my son also used as a tumbling room).

Then we usually head downstairs - more amazement in pretend play and music.  My kid likes to gather other willing participants into a band and put on a performance.

I hear a lot of complaints that the grown-up pays too - I don't mind because I have just as much fun as my little guy.  Call it admission to the toddler rock show. ;)  But really, I've used the time to make a picture to hang in his room (his name out of various materials), puppets we play with later and I find that painting a picture of nothing while sitting at a tiny table is actually very relaxing.  And sitting out back or downstairs chatting with a girlfriend or just being still and quiet while my child is safely and creatively entertained and using his imagination - its totally worth it.

I'm having my son's birthday party this year and can't wait.  We have attended one party here and it was a lot of fun.  Invite is good for admission all day so guests can play for free before/after the party if they want.  They use real table-wear and cloth napkins and the party coordinators are very nice and helpful.  You get to do a special craft (led by the coordinator).  The website has lots of infomation on the birthday parties - they are very reasonable, a lot of fun, and help a great cause!

I've found that later afternoons tend to be less busy (I scheduled our party for the latest time slot for this reason), even on rainy days.

    Go to ArtBeast, its awesome!

Hands down my favorite place to while away an afternoon with my nieces!  All the way from the sunlit dance floor to the tin can castle to the endless supply of craft supplies, ArtBeast is a wonder-filled adventure for children (and adults too really).  Nothing is off limits when it comes to creating at ArtBeast and that makes for a very exciting day!  The staff are friendly and helpful without being overbearing.  They encourage fun and play and noise and never frown when a mess is created or an instrument played too loudly.  They tirelessly clean and create an amazing atmosphere without so much as batting an eye.  The fact that I can spend an entire day creating with my nieces at ArtBeast for less than the price of two hours at the movies makes it all the better.  Not to mention the best part......every single dollar goes to supporting Tubman House (a transitional living program serving Sacramento's homeless parenting youth and their children.  Amazing!

WOW, my wife and I just took our son to the camp at Art Beast, my son was the most excited he has been all summer. The teacher Sonja was just amazing, fun interesting projects that he did HIMSELF!!! he was and is so proud of what he accomplished and we have the project to take home.
All I can say that if other teachers were so involved and dedicated to their children, the world would have a much better generation to look forward to leading the charge of a better planet.

As a gma who loves to give my grandchildren experiences that are educational, fun and creative this is the most excellent place! I went with my 2 yr old gdaughter on Pres. Day. I am glad for the previous posts as they gave me insight. to open play areas. Sher was a little wary of the paint room as there was soo much going on this particular afternoon..so outside she went into the sand play area and LOVED the baby baths, and playing with the sand and going up and down the stairs. The play mat room on the third floor encourages is great for shapes, colors, jumping. Finally ready for the paint area, she did 2 paintings. They take about an hour or more to dry (depending on how much paint they pile on the paper). There are glue projects, clay (which was a little hard and didn't form well that day). bead making, ..more than we got to experience. The play house, kitchen, loft was my favorite place to watch her. She made me a pizza (with hot mitten on) and put the babies to bed upstairs. The buildout of this area is beautiful woodwork with the dimensions perfect for the little ones. Even the oven is made in beautiful wood and the doors open, etc. This was a visit of 1 1/2 hrs....We will be back, many more times. I will tell new moms/gmas at work about ArtBeast who live in the outlying areas of midtown. I wish I had her more often so I could come more too! The staff assistance are not intrusive, keep the areas prepped for the next child, and do a great job to keep the positive play energy going..that takes a watchful eye and its appreciated.
Price is reasonable ..your childs experiences are priceless when you have a first painting on your wall!

I visited ArtBeast on one of its preview days.  This is such a wonderful addition to midtown.  There is so much creativity in the activities that are offered, that it can't help but inspire creativity in the kids who come here.  There's a performing arts area, complete with a stage and a puppet theater, a music area, dance area, visual arts area, lots of hands-on displays and activities, and caring staff.  I highly recommend this to anyone with small children!

Awesome place for awesome kids. We have purchased the monthly pass for our 4 little kids which is the best deal for us. We can go as much as we like in a month and it pays for itself on the second visit. The kids like going there to dress up and bounce around or play with clay. I like it b/c we get out of the house and play together.  We find that going late like at 5 pm is the best time to go as it was insanely crowded today (MLK day). THe staff is helpful, and it is for a great cause. I think this helps but Sacramento on the map as true city.  I will have to add them to my list of things for kids to do in Sacramento.

Opened to the general public on July 2, 2009, ArtBeast Studio is a wonderland for young children and their parents.  Described on their website as a drop-in art studio with classes in various media for children 0-6, ArtBeast is that and much more.  I have two children, 4, and 2, who were completely and totally occupied -- body, mind, and soul -- for 3 and a half hours on our first visit.   And they haven't stopped asking to go back.

My mom has always believed and encouraged me as a parent to honor that children know when a space is meant to include them or not -- and if you have any doubt of that, watch your children's faces as they explore ArtBeast.  They get it.  This isn't a place that just "includes" them -- it is FOR them; and they could not be more delighted.

It's difficult to do justice to the environment that's been created at ArtBeast.  I overheard a staffperson explaining to another, "The answer is always 'yes'" (to any project a child proposes).  And the possibilities are endless.  My own children played house in the art loft; they made music with both musical instruments and with whatever objects they could find; they put on several stage shows with other kids -- some of whom they'd never met before but uncharacteristically immediately befriended;  they put on puppet shows; they made huge incredible messes with sand and shaving cream and water in a lovely outdoor courtyard while their mother smiled indulgently at them the entire time; they spun paint; they painted walls; they danced; came home with some fun craft projects (loved the "I'm Crafty!" class); and they even curled up in my lap for a story when they needed a quiet moment....  And, with the four sets of stairs to climb between various activity rooms, they plum wore themselves out.

Sacramento's got some great playgrounds and activities for kids -- but ArtBeast is something new and it's easy for me to see that by the end of the summer, my family and I will not be able to imagine how we survived without it for so long.  ArtBeast does more to help make Sacramento a city for families than can be possibly appreciated without experiencing it.  Go!

I took my 3 yr old and 15 month old to ArtBeast today. It was great and the kids enjoyed all of the activities. I love being able to sit back and let them just play without having to say "no" every other second. If I was solely rating the experience I would have given this 5 stars. However, it costs $8 per child AND adult. My Mom and I took the 2 kids today and it cost us $32! While we had fun, it is not worth $32 for 2 hours of play. We will not be going back...there are just too many other comparable activities in Sacramento for kids that are more affordable.

Great space, light and bright and so much fun. It's like they had a focus group of little kids to help design and create the different spaces and activities within them. My 4 year old loved the baby baths outside- what a great idea. Everything was organized, yet messiness is fostered. How great is that?

Sorry - really did not like this place. For $16, my 14 month old and I sat in a tiny baby section with a few toys. She was too young for the painting and the outside - and there was no puppet show.  There are no gates on the stairs so you really have to watch them. It was crowded and messy and tons of things she wanted to put in her mouth and couldn't. I was really disappointed.

We LOVE Artbeast, but I have to agree with the last reviewer that it may be TOO good and too popular! We have been there several times now and love every single room, including the backyard. We take home messy art projects every time and hang them on the walls at home. The kids love their work and never want to leave. Most weekdays are relatively mild with a late  morning rush but Saturdays and holidays are unbearably crowded.

This is possibly the best place I have taken my kids in Sacramento! I love it. It is so much open free exploration that was set up prefectly for little ones to create. There are tons of different arts and craft things out just so that kids can come and go as they please. There is a great outside area with water play, boats, and wonderful noise makers. I haven't done any of their classes, but the free play areas are wonderful! The only complaint I have is that they do not offer group pricing. I own a daycare and they gave me a REALLY bad time about trying to take my kids in. They told me that we couldn't use the punch card that they offer for mulitple visits because we were not a "family". I think they need to take a closer look at what "family" means. I love those kids as if they were my own and I don't think it is right for someone else to tell us that we are not family when I have spent 5 days a week with some of those kids for their entire lives. Who decides what makes a family? We are a family in my eyes...
