Take that multiplex!
I've been hitting the Art Theater for about 10 years now. I'm glad to see it become what it is today. The general 4th street scene it rockin' these days.
Art has great rotation of indie and cult films. I've been going on Friday's for midnight showings in conjunction with Mondo Celluloid. They've been showing some awesome flicks lately. Prices are decent and supporting local business is always great.
As a bonus, there are some cool bars in walking distance. -

I come to this theatre on a regular basis. I live right around the corner from the Art so I appreciate the convenience. I like the selection of first run and indie cinema. They often have special fri or sat nite 11 pm or midnite showings of cult classics or special sunday 11am screenings or Q & A's. It's cozy and intimate. The showtimes are fine with me. Not a ton but this isn't your regular metroplex style theatre.
It's a restored "art deco" theatre, only showing one film at a time. There used to be a ton of theatres like this in Long Beach--this is the remaining one in this town. I think the seats are fine, I don't know what the other reviewer is complaining about. No, doesn't have stadium seating, so don't come expecting that, it's old fashioned. A real theatre as far as I'm concerned.
Those of us who've lived in this area a long time remember what the Art USED to look like: A dump. I think they did a fabulous job in restoring the 1920's style glamour and I'm thrilled.
I like that coffee (from Portfolios Annex) or wine at the wine bar is sold right next door and I can bring both in to watch the film. Stunning both inside and out, it appears occasionally on commericals. Nothing but great times at this place. -

Such a civilized theatre. I've had nothing but great experiences at the Art. And, you can buy a bottle of wine next door and bring it in.
Movie and wine, are you kidding me? Always a great experience... -

Best place in Long Beach to see a show, you can bring in a bottle of wine and a cheese plate from the wine bar next door! Love the great Indie films they mix in with the new release films. I have also been to an event there and it was great fun, great staff always willing to help. Way better than the Multiplex!

We have been here twice for different events. The first was a friends wedding and the second was for a Buddhist New Years prayer meeting. They were both amazing and this venue helped to 'set the scene' at both events. The people that work there are so helpful and always have a smile. The coffee shop and wine bar next door are perfect additions to the place. The stadium like seating makes or very easy to see everything. Not a bad seat in the house. Now we just have to get there one night to watch a movie! Date night with the sweet husband, perhaps?

First of all, if you like huge megaplexes and the huge blockbuster hits, this isn't the place for you. The Art is a quaint, beautiful small art theatre that specializes in art house, foreign, indie, documentary and cult classic films. There is only one actual theatre, but it is fantastic. The prices are quite good and they do have discounts and a card you can buy in which you pay for the price of 4 movies but get two extra. It's a pretty good deal if you're somewhat of a regular movie goer and live in the area. Oh did I mention, they have a small WINE bar also! The great thing about this place is the crowd that attends. I have NEVER had people trying to talk through the film next to me here or answering/texting on their phones like they always do at the megaplex type places. The audience is usually made up of the type of people that really enjoy film and respect the moviegoing experience. The Midnight/Cult film crowd is a bit more rowdy but it only serves to make the experience more fun. When I saw the documentary Lemmy there, it was possibly the most fun movie experience of my life! Forget the megaplex and head out to the Art soon!

The Art theatre is a staple of Long beach. Its so amazing how they have restored this place. Its like the Lil' Theatre that Could.
Overall, im used to 21st century seating and sound systems, and this place falls WAY short in performance factor. You can hear any little sound in the theatre... people gabbing...crunching... giggling.. even a lil cockroach scurrying by your feet. Kidding, never seen any critters but it feels a little dingy, grimy, and the seats are old and springy.
The movie selection is sparse with limited show times, so for those reasons, I give it a 3.5. BUT they do have good titles, you can also drink wine from the wine bar and good service from the attendants, so 4.
The crowd is annoying here though, so watch out! Lots of amateurs who have no idea what theatre etiquette is. I like watching independent movies at the Leammle Sunset5, where half the audience doesnt say a word, they are outcasts, who most likely drove there alone.... so i guess that makes me a theatre snob. -

Support your local independent theatre!
My first experience with the art theatre was riding my fixed gear down 4th street and seeing their billboard; Casablanca will be showing in it's orginal form Sunday at 11am.
I was thinking to myself as I was trying to avoid on coming traffic, "oh my goosh, my favorite movie in theatre? How is that possible? I've always wasted my movie experiences at the AMC or Edwards. I have to stop and ask what this Art Theatre is all about."
This is a great place to experience classic movies, current movies and movies you were too young to catch in the theatre. I remember watching a midnight showing of Stanley Kubrick's the Shining, with a friend and real movie lovers like myself, who's interested in the art of cinema.
The Good:
1. Beautiful theatre
2. Intimate setting and decor
3. Real movie lovers come here, not silly little teens looking for a make out session
4. Random showings of great movie titles, check their website and join their emailing list
5. Wine bar and coffee shop next door
The Bad:
1. One theatre with limited showings
2. No parking
The Ugly:
1. Kind of expensive :(Listed in: The best and douches spots in…

The Art Theatre is one of Long Beach's historic jewels. Completely renovated, the theater is a work of art deco to behold. I recommend going there to at least see the detailing that has been lovingly considered during their renovations.
A few things to consider before committing to seeing a movie there, however:
1) The seats are elementary-school auditorium style (updated with some nicer upholstery), and get really uncomfortable after about 20 minutes. You can't scooch down to even prop the back of your head on the backrest. Nothing works, except to sit in a "Church Lady" rigid posture for the entirety of your entertainment experience.
2) The snack bar is really pitiful! They have a few candies and some popcorn over which they can dispense "icky-oil" --or at least that's what it seems to be. It could be clarified butter, but I didn't smell anything like butter in the lobby. Do yourself a favor and smuggle in what you want for snacks.
They don't seem to know what they've got on their hands. This little gem could be a hip, trendy spot with cappuccino, scones/fresh baked goods, designer waters and other hip things to snack on. They could fore go insisting on the cruel-after-school-detention seating and install seats that can keep patrons comfortable through a 2 hour film. They could have preferential/assigned seating like Arclight. And most of all, they could predominantly show art/indie/foreign films there. The list could go on. So I'm not sure who is in charge of the theater, but they're not really maximizing its potential.
I go to the Art Theater when there is an indie film passing through. And even then I have to prep myself for the seating situation. Sometimes, I just can't take it and I'll drive out to Hollywood or Santa Monica, rather than torture myself in those cramped 1920's seats.
Why guys? Why does it have to be like this? -
Review from Matt E.
I've been here for both a movie showing ("Lemmy") and a live musical performance (RX Bandits). As a place to see a movie, it's a very cool independent movie house. While showing some of the more mainstream hits (currently showing "Cowboys and Aliens"), they also feature a ton of cool indie flicks as well as cult classics via Mondo Celluloid productions / promotion company.
As a music venue, this place truly sucks. For one thing, it's really too small for anything other than sit down performances. Rock shows (at least the one I attended last night), with people standing / dancing in front of the stage, just don't work in this venue. There needs to be more room in front of the stage for people to stand. The Rio Theater in Santa Cruz would be a good example for the Art to look at if they truly want to turn this theater into a music venue...take 4-8 more rows of seats out in front. Granted it's not nearly as big as the Rio, but taking some seats out (or maybe looking into detachable seats?) would help make the concert experience better.
Along with taking out seats, a decent sound and lighting system is sorely needed, along with some ventilation.
They do serve beer here, which is a plus...not to mention the history of this place. It took on a renovation a few years ago and has some really cool art deco features.
See a movie here, skip the live music... -

Went here over the long weekend to see the Conan O'Brien movie/documentary. (not disappointing, btw)
This theater has everything I enjoy. Its only one screen, so its fairly cozy. Intimate. Clean. Friendly Staff.
Only kicker is that finding parking is a b****. But where in Long Beach is it easy to find parking? :P Anywho, I can't justify taking away a whole star for that. I'd recommend this theater to anyone.
They take the 3 major cc's btw. Not Discover. -

I've been a fan of the Art for a couple of decades, especially when they show indies or documentaries, so I would put up with mess just to see the film. Now, however, the theater itself is so magical and delightful, it greatly enchances the experience. Staff are funny and helpful. Still wish they stuck with only indies, but understand paying the bills, too. My only complaint is the lack of sufficient slope in the seating so you aren't stuck behind someone's head. But still worth your ongoing support.

I had the pleasure of attending a great Jazz Venue at this Icon of LB on the 17th of March and, this was the first time I'd been since the renovation
Just to clue you in on how long it was since the last time I was here, to watch Michael Moore's movie about GWB!
The renovation of this icon is amazing from the outside to the inside keeping with the genre of Art Deco and 1930's-1940's decorum.
The seats are comfy, cup holders (not on the arm rests but in front attached to the back of the seats) is a plus. Also, the lighting and acoustics are perfect.
The Movie Screen is not huge but for the types of films (especially the foreign or overlooked by the Oscars' Films') I'm sure do quite nicely here.
The movies (for the most part) shown here are of Cannes Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival Genre and, they even show some current utilitarian mainstream movies too.
The snack bar and ticket booth staff are very courteous and informative (they know just about all you need to know about upcoming films). And, the two owners' are very welcoming, pleasant and very handsome too!
A perfect location as there are many eateries around to go to before or after a movie or venue, a nice little wine bar and coffee house mix next store too.
Maybe it was because there were only around 20 people here for the venue I attended but, then again there were people coming out from a movie prior to [that] venue but, the AC was chilly and I'm glad I wore a long sleeved thermal under my T-Shirt (yes the Michael P's signature look) to remain comfortable.

I went here back in August for an RX Bandits concert. I thought the place was really cool; it was weird going to a concert in a theatre but I liked the row seats. And you're able to go up front where there's an open area and dance or do whatever real close to the band. This place sells beer and snacks, and was very well orgranized. I felt safe while also having a good time listening to the band. Great prices too!

The 83rd Academy Awards at The Art Theater Long Beach.
An amazing night! Watching the Oscars at a theater at first might sound a bit odd - but this charity event was incredible! Wine and appetizers greeted us as we walked into the lobby where everyone was dressed red carpet ready! The hostess for the evening was the Incredible Tammie Brown ( channeling her inner Judy Garland to perfection) with smiles and flash bulbs popping she wrangled and wrestled everyone into a festive mood with wit and one or two catty comments to keep us on our toes! There were raffles, a touch of karaoke and cheers and jeers as camps quickly picked sides on who should have won, who was robbed out right and most importantly WHO DRESSED HER IN THAT HORRIBLE OUTFIT!! A great night of fun for a good cause and in the end we all ended up winners! -

This place is adorable in the way old people Googling themselves on the computers at the public library can be.
Even though this place is a single hall theater, the movie selections they chose are always spot-on. Sure, you could go down to Downtown Long Beach and go to one of those souless pantheons of cinematography and catch the latest paint-by-numbers box office smash...or you could visit a real deal neighborhood theater and watch a carefully selected movie.
Extra points are awarded for carrying Toblerone bars in the concession stand, for having that cute little wine bar next door and for always been clean. Y'all know I'm a bathroom Nazi and nothing pisses me off than a piss-soaked bathroom but this place excels where most theaters are sorely lacking. Kudos for cleanliness. -

The Theater Itself: So often now we go to large, crowded theaters that we forget the smaller more welcoming ones. It's all about bigger, louder, better. Well Art isn't so big, but it's definitely a great theater for any movie, and it also takes you back as if you were in the same room decades ago without forfeiting sound, vision, and comfortable seating.
Pros:
-Are you a student? They do student tickets here! Plus, sometimes they have promotions going on for free popcorn!
-Do you like wine? They let you buy a bottle/glass of wine next door and bring it in!!! Friendly towards the community and its visitors.
What more do you need to know before a visit to this venue? Did I mention the wine bar next door? Go now!!! -

I'm a Long Beach local and have grown up with the Art Theatre.
The art shows fantastic movies, throws wonderful events, and is in the middle of the most fun section of Long Beach.
The Art used to be run by different folks who kept the place dirty and uncomfortable. Now it looks great and the seats are cozy.
Best popcorn, best movie picks, right across the street from Number 9 and Lola's (my two favorite places to eat) and Logan is the best!
You won't find a more familial and personable staff.
If you ever need something to do in Long Beach, go here. -

I recently saw Social Network at The Art Theater. I really enjoyed the venue.
There are some things to consider, like limited parking and a somewhat rough neighborhood after dark (both a mix of cool, artsy and seedy all wrapped up together) I was asked twice for a cigarette or a dollar by kids who looked 15 if they were a day, but the theater itself is quite nice.
The older marquee and ticket booth make it very nostalgic while the interior of the cinema's have been remodeled and are comfortable and well laid out.. although it is not true stadium seating, it is graduated so that unless you are behind an amazon or a person with a hat you can see fine, the sound and picture quality were satisfactory as well. No issues there.
The great thing about this theater is that they play special engagements and cool classic films that you might never seen on the big screen. They also have a very cool little coffee shop and wine bar attached that make Date Night easy for those of you who want to mix that in.
I will be back!
Horror movie buffs will love it, lots of cool classic Horror Flicks play here as well!Listed in: THE LBC

This is a swell little one-screen theater. The seats are pretty comfy, the fare distinctly art house mixed with some non-movie events, and the staff all really friendly.
There's some not-bad vintage and vintage-inspired shopping along 4th Street perfect for pre-cinema browsing, as well as a couple of restuarants.
Street parking, so arrive with plenty of time to find a spot. -

I am so appreciative to Michelle Kernan and the owners of the Art Theatre. On May 28, 2011, my new husband and I got married at the theater. It was AWESOME! Not only was Michelle so helpful leading up to the wedding, making sure every detail was perfect; but the guests were soooooo impressed. It was such a different venue for a wedding. We had "A Love Story: Frank and Kimberly" on the marquee, unlimited popcorn, Chaplin's movie "City Lights" playing on the screen when the guests arrived for the cocktail hour. Then we had giant tents set up out back where the guests ate tacos, drink and danced the night away. A perfect day I must say and I will forever be indebted to the staff at the Art for such an amazing memory at a VERY LOW cost. :)

I just saw a free viewing of BIUTIFUL here last night. I enjoyed this theatre! It's clean and quaint. Sadly, their movie selections are limited.
2 downfalls though:
1) Parking is limited to street parking and you may find yourself driving around the block several times.
2) I was spoiled with stadium seating therefore I found myself leaning to one side to be able to see past the person sitting in front of me -

This is one of the last of that dying breed, the indie/arthouse movie theatre. They get a great rotation of movies in there and have some really fun events. They only have one screen, so don't wait long to see something you're interested in if it's playing there - odds are it'll be gone within a week, two at the most. Nice interior. Parking's a bear, but that's the neighrborhood for ya.

This is actually one of my favorite theaters in So.Cal. It usually carries indie movies, films that are hard to find at AMC or an Edwards, which is perfectly fine for me. Every once and a while it'll have an old movie playing at midnight or Saturdays.
Being an older theater, there's only one dedicated screening theater. Popcorn, snacks, drinks are cheaper than mainstream theaters and conveniently, there's a wine bar next door! Can I get an Amen!
Probably my favorite thing about this place is that the owners frequently visit and everyone who works here is always up to par w/ the customer service! No lazy or bored looking employees. Everyone who walks through the front doors are treated like a guest. My husband and I spent about 15 mins before our movie started having a full on conversation with the ticket taker. She was great!
Park on the street, but be aware of time limits. Right across the street is a little spot to pay and park. And while you're there, take a stroll to all the local shops on 4th St! Every store's different and a wonder when you walk in. Movie going just time-traveled back to when it was a fun experience at the Art Theatre.Listed in: Make the most out of Long…

Please support this local theatre! I love the location - it's in the trendy, artsy part of Long Beach. The theatre plays new, old, blockbuster and indie films. It's clean and comfortable inside. I love the small theatre feel where you buy the tickets from the concession stand. There's a wine bar and coffee bar with gelato next door to the theatre. WOW!! This would be 5 Stars, but I'm afraid I may be a victim of false marketing.
This is a old-timey theater with a friendly staff and current/classic movies. The news of special events, like midnight movies, spreads quickly word-of-mouth and through the interwebs.
Unfortunately, I think I was tricked. Back in November, the movie poster for Black Swan was displayed in its front case. I emailed the theater to find out when showtimes would be, since nothing was listed online. I received a prompt reply (big plus!), "We don't have a date yet for BLACK SWAN, but stay tuned and look for our newsletter to announce a date for it." This was back in November. The movie has since opened up at limited locations over a week ago, and I have yet to see movietimes. This is an amazing movie (as I drove to L.A. to see it), and know many people would drive here to see it. Hmmm... maybe it will happen in 2011? In the meantime, I will just have to keep checking.
So, overall, this is a great experience of a theater, but be wary of any movie posters on display.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, there's a wine bar next door!!! Wine! Next! Door! -

I love this art house theater!
They have shown a lot of big hit movies, small independent movies, and classics everyone will want to see. For example, They have shown Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Mad Max, Sex and the City 2, Kick-Ass, the Joan Rivers documentary, and great foreign films that you sometimes have to drive to LA to see!
All of the above, and the fact that it's walking distance from my house, makes me try to see as many movies as possible at this place. That doesn't include Sex and the City, but hey, everybody wants the place to survive since it's been renovated, so I'll survive and watch something else instead. Best local movie theater by far.
My only complaints (and I can't believe I have any) are the show times, and the lack of hot dogs. I work during the day Mon-Fri so I rarely make it to the screenings of the classic films shown during the day. Plus, I love eating hot dogs at the movies. I hate popcorn, but I make an exception at the Art Theatre.Listed in: LB Favs

Good old time theatre. Apparently it's restored, but it is one of the oldest theaters in California or the U.S.... I don't know, it's got some sort of history.
I had an opportunity to screen my own documentary film here during a film festival and I was impressed how good the atmosphere and screen made my film look. For a minute, you'd think I was a "filmmaker".
(plug: http://mwhbb.com)
Decent amount of seating. Clean set-up. Popcorn and other goodies available. Usually you can find films that aren't playing anywhere else and if it's a "normal" flick, it's usually a good one.
Check it out if you're local and don't want to hassle the Pike or Marina. -

I'm a total failure to any LBC cred that I may have led you to believe I had. It's true. I hadn't been to The Art since the remodel until today. Yep. This is me hanging my head in shame, being a complete and utter failure to my city.
But, I'll walk a little more proudly now that I can consider myself a patron of The Art. First thing's first: it's an art theatre. Head elsewhere for your Imax and your stadium seating. The screen here is...well, it's not big. Tiger Woods probably has one just as big in his living room. But, this is one nice art theatre since the remodel.
The place is super clean, they get a rad selection of flicks, even though the screen is small, it's quite clear, the seats are comfy, the service is fabulous, the fellow theatre-goers are generally a notch above those at say...Cinemark, and, most importantly - they have a wine bar attached!
This is my kinda theatre.Listed in: 4th Street Long Beach, Movie Theaters Long Beach

Beautiful restored Art Deco theatre...on 4th Street which is lined with great restaurants and shops.

Review from Mike Q.
Walking down the aisle of the long narrow auditorium, seeing the stage set in front of the screen, and noticing little Art Deco touches... spending time in the renovated Art Theatre was like setting foot onto a diorama come to life. It ended up being the perfect venue in which to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox. The quaint, handcrafted feel of Wes Anderson's latest pop movie magic matched the quaint, nostalgic feel of the theater perfectly.
Thankfully the recent upgrades to the independent Art Theatre didn't rob it of its prodigious charm. No, the screen isn't very big by megaplex standards, but the picture quality is vastly improved, and the sound was just as good as any Long Beach theater (to my untrained ears anyway). But the most important improvement I noticed wasn't in the tech specs, but in the overall comfort of the theater. The fresh paint, clean carpet, and above all the new seats made for a really pleasant movie-going experience. Add to that the still-exemplary service, the rotating selection of arthouse flicks, as well as one-off events including special screenings and concerts, and what we get is a neighborhood theater we can proudly call ours. -

Quick & Dirty:
This little movie house is cute and clean and has one screen. Chairs are a little uncomfortable but love the fact that this place is still here. Now there's coffee. Woo Hoo! (yes, woo hoo!).
Long & Renovated:
So they really cleaned this place up and it looks really cool now. Love the architecture and color scheme they have going here. The Portfolio Annex is an added bonus. The bathrooms are really clean and modern and the new theater is bright and still has that new-theater smell to it!
So what's the catch? Why not that big 5th star? Well, the seats. Ouch. The are a little uncomfortable and there is absolutely no way to slouch in them. That's rough, especially when you are watching a 2 1/2 hr Angelina Jolie flick.
Other than that I like this place. Concessions is small but there is only one screen so who cares. They know how to mix the butter to popcorn ratio perfectly here also so that there is butter all the way through the bucket!
Would I go back here again? You bet, given that their one screen is showing something I want to watch.
Here! Here!... to a Long Beach Landmark! -

Great job on the restore folks. The people working there are friendly and the place looks fantastic. It's nice to be able to go there and not have to bring a pillow to sit on (I always did and convinced my friends they should too for which they were grateful). Now the seats are comfy, cozy, and have cup holders. The also added a wine bar and a coffee joint on either side of the front entrance. I haven't patronized either but they look cute.
Be sure to go there and support a small, independent theater in a town of multiplexes showing only blockbusters. -

Lots has changed here since the sticky floor warehouse days of Rocky Horror midnight madness. I ventured here to the Art Theater to check out a Mondo Celluloid veiwing of The Forbidden Zone and I was so impressed by the new look and feel of this great local theater.
The Good
- comfy seating and lots of it
- a lovely stage in front of the screen for fun events
- clean and tidy bathrooms
- friendly staff
- a wine bar one one side and a coffee shop on the other!
The Bad
- sound quality was kinda goofy (but it might have just been the movie)
- cash only? What the deuce?!!
Overall I really dug it here.
I will be keeping this place in mind the next time I feel the need to waste 2 hours or so of my life. (and i mean that in the best way!) -

Wellll this is a Rocky Horror review and apparently it's at the Queen May now but whatever. This is where I saw it. This is where I review it.
Love love LOVED IT.
The preshow was amazing. I don't think the actual movie started until like 1:30 or 2am because the preshow was so great. Especially the rocky virgin traditions. :). Which I won't spoil.....I went through those traditions and lived to tell the tale....
One of the guys that used to play Dr. Frank (the best might I add) was named Steve and he used to be a piercer at Condom Revolution. Great guy. Totally awesome. He had piercings in his wrists!!
Anyway...totally do the experience but don't come in costume from the movie. You'll be the only one. Wear something whorish, goth, or lingerie and you'll fit right in. That goes for the girls too.
Great high school memories.
Long live Midnight insanity!!!
