"Omg! Those things are blinding me!"
"Well, don't blame me, blame The Art of Modern Dentistry...oh, and Groupon for bringing me here)."
At first, I didn't realize this was an actual dentist office, but after finding it out, it definitely helped ease any fears I had about the teeth whitening.
A waterfall background when you walk in helps calm you and the free water in the lobby is definitely something you'll need after the process..
Where they do the teeth whitening has two walls, but it's not enclosed. Don't worry, no one can see you, but everyone can hear your conversations with the practitioner and vice versa. This means that as I was getting my teeth whitened, I overheard that I couldn't eat anything red for 48 hrs. Yes, my lady told me that, but what I overheard was specifically no cranberry sauce. What?! It's Thanksgiving, no!!!! Ok, actually, now that I think about it, in this case, it was good that I could hear the other conversations.
This was my first teeth whitening experience and although my teeth were already white according to the practitioner (I tended to disagree, but that's a different story), I did see a difference especially with my bottom teeth.
I would definitely recommend this place for their whitening (especially with a Groupon). I mean who doesn't want to smile and blind all the drivers in the road :) -

The WORST dental office experience I've ever had -- the front desk/administrative staff are the most INCOMPETENT set of people I've ever had the misfortune of encountering. While the dentist and hygienist were great -- stay far, far away.
-lack of understanding or mishandling of insurance codes leading to being overcharged and months of trying to reconcile with the insurance company
-inconsistent knowledge across staff
...I'm not going to bother typing out the many ways this office has FAILED. Get it together AMD. -

Here is an update to my Art of Modern Dentistry Experience.
Again, I'd like to say that I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the work I had done here. The hygenists and Dr. Daftary are all very nice, kind, and professional. The facility is extremely clean and beautiful to look at, a calming atmosphere.
So, the reason for my previous bad review was because of billing issues. I am more than happy to report that my billing issues have been completely resolved. Dr. Daftary called me personally to explain what had happened. There was confusion with my insurance, it had previously been verified but later insurance denied my claim. Dr. Daftary then set aside time in her busy schedule to meet with me in person. I really appreciate the time she took to explain step by step how everything had happened, as the person in the billing department whom I had been with speaking never did. Dr. Daftary really went above and beyond to make sure that I was a satisified customer, and customer service like that is so rare these days.
So, overall, I have definitely changed my opinion of the service at Art of Modern Dentistry. I will be going back, because it is obvious that customer satsifaction is of utmost importance to Dr. Daftary and the staff at Art of Modern Dentistry.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I haven't written a review in a while, but I felt it was time to start up again and let everyone know and experience what I have gone through in the time I've been coming to Art of Modern Dentistry.
I had been a client with them for quite a while now. Initially, everything was fantastic - the place looked luxurious, the smiling people were refreshing to see (especially in the dentist's office), and everyone was super-helpful with explaining everything that they were doing and why they were doing it. I have had some cleanings and fillings done (by the way, I didn't even know I had a cavity ...). Everything was peachy keen.
And then everything went downhill from there. My filling was not as strong as it probably should have been, so it broke off while I was eating soft foods. I got Invisalign done, which in and of itself wasn't a terrible experience, but the follow-up afterward was so poor. I, as the patient, had to keep calling for updates about whether my retainer had arrived. Every time, it was the same answer: "We'll call you when it comes in." And with each time, I sounded like a broken record and they sounded more exasperated with me. I work in the healthcare field - I know how busy it gets with the number of patients you have to see everyday. It is not a reason to completely forget about or disregard your patients' needs.
I know everyone's experience is different, and I'm just expressing my own. I don't think I'll be coming back. -

First, let me state this is for the new office on South Michigan.
Stepping into the office I was first impressed with the friendly receptionist, great office decor, and what seemed to be state of the art facilities. Little did I know that I was about to become their prey.
I went into this office for an annual cleaning and x-rays. Being that I've had extreme luck in the dental area with little to no cavities in the last 15 years, no orthodontics, and excellent alignment...I never anticipated to have anything but an "all clear!"
About half way through my cleaning the "nurse" she informed me I had a cavity. What? But you're not a dentist? The dentist came in and did nothing but look in my mouth (no poking, no prodding) and said "Yep! I see it too!"
Naively, I booked a follow up appointment for the filling and was on my way. Later, an eerie feeling snuck up on me and for some random reason I decided to Yelp! this place. After reading the reviews, I was skeptical about the so called "cavity" I had. I booked a 2nd opinion appointment with another highly reviewed dentist recommended here, took my x-rays and LOW AND BEHOLD....no cavity! Imagine that?! The 2nd dentist also mentioned that he could not tell my teeth had been cleaned, even though it was one week prior. He showed me photos taken of the inside of my mouth while I was in his office and compared them to those taken at the Art of Modern Dentistry prior to the cleaning. It was almost as if there was no difference before or after the cleaning.
To add insult to injury, a few weeks later I received a "Predetermination Letter" from my insurance company stating that they filed for additional work that was NOT discussed with me during my consultation. I am wondering if they thought they could get away with telling my insurance that they wanted to get paid for 3 cavities when they only replaced 1??
Someone needs to turn these frauds into the Insurance Commissioner!
I would give this place 0 stars if it was possible! -

When I finally got dental insurance I was excited to see this local dentist was in my plan. Initiallly I was really impressed with their fancy decor and their big screen tv's. Everyone seeemed very nice and professional during my first visit there.. unfortunately my relationship with them was short lived. When I got home I saw that my cleaning wasn't done very well. Then 1 month later I went for an appointment to get a cavity filled and found out that they had dropped my insurance coverage. When I found another dentist in the city to continue my care, they wouldn't release my records or the xrays I had even though I called them, went to their office, and had my new dentist call them. Their sudden disregard for any of my stuff left a bitter taste in my mouth, and I found out from my new dentist that a lot of the stuff they were trying to get me to do were not evidence-based, just good money makers. Shady....

This is for the South Loop office on Michigan Ave
DO NOT GO HERE! THEY ARE SCAM ARTISTS!
First of all, they didn't properly clean my teeth. Even after I complained, they still did not do a good job the second time.
Then they took extra x-rays without even asking me and had to the nerve to charge me!
Then they said I had a cavity and I would need to get a crown done at $1,000. I went to my dentist in Detroit for a second opinion and found out that there was not even a cavity there. Second, my dentist said there was no reason to get a crown if it was a cavity.
It was the biggest amount of BS that I experienced. I have never had such a horrible experience with a dentist. The dentist was nice but clearly it was all an act. -

So I came back for my second appointment for the actual cleaning and was treated again with great service. This time no wait. My appointment was at 4:30 and promptly at 4:30 I was seated in my dental chair.
Dentist and her assistant came in and confirmed what we were doing for the day, asked if I had any questions, and then started the work. I needed deep cleaning done so had the right side of my mouth numb. First they put a numbing topical ointment on my gums (cherry flavored so it wasnt disgusting) and then the shots (couldn't really feel it in the back gums but the ones in the front stung).
I had explained to the dentist that I cannot stand the sound of dental cleaning (I can do pain but its the sound that I cringe to) and she agreed that i could listen to my ipod during the whole treatment. The sound still resonates in the ear but it was a lot better because I had my ipod.
I had fillings and deep cleaning done on the right side in the same appointment and it was all done in about 45-50 minutes. Dentist then directed me back to the receptionist and I paid my share of the bill (its an estimate of what I would owe after insurance) and it matched the original estimate I got on my first trip (so the quote didnt change mysteriously after the work was done). Lets hope insurance goes through! I'll update later.
Dentist explained I might experience some pain or discomfort after the anesthetic wore off... I was numb for about 3-4 hours but felt no pain after. Right side of my mouth feels a lot cleaner. I'll be going back to get the left side done and allover polish next week - so hope it goes just as well!Listed in: South Looping

I'm not sure what all the grief is about. My experience at this place has been nothing but professional and considerate.
The lady who calls to confirm appointments has some issues but the actual staff that you see and deal with is great. Especially one of the hygienists, I feel like her name is Jenna but I could be wrong. Anyway she is great and really friendly and personable. That makes a difference when some has their hands in your mouth.
I have always found them to be upfront with their pricing. Clear about what my insurance covers and what they don't and never pushy or suggesting treatment I don't need. -

I couldn't love Art of Modern Dentistry any more than I already do. After experiencing lots of pain on a tooth I had a root canal done on a year prior, I found AoMD- who took me the next day. Their endodonist, Dr. Davenport, retreated the tooth with NO PAIN at all. An hour later I could eat and talk again. The receptionist is super friendly, and works with your schedule to get you in. During a routine check-up they discovered two more- which were treated within a week.
The best part about them, is they don't try to convince you to do unnecessary work. They didn't replace my old crown because it wasn't necessary saving me 300 bucks! I am so happy I have a dentist close to my house, that has Saturday and early morning, late evening hours, with professional dentists. The atmosphere is modern and they use the most up to date technology. Your teeth are important and I trust mine to AoMD. -

Easily the best dentist office I've ever been to. Amazing office. Very well designed and decorated. I love being able to watch Blue Planet or Planet Earth on any of the giant flat screens in every room. They are very thorough with the care of your teeth. They make sure you know everything going on and feel comfortable with it. Great customer service. Been here for a deep cleaning, root canal and cavity fillings ... All were painless except for the shots.
ONLY DOWNSIDE ... The price. Make sure you have great insurance or get price quotes but they are good about working with you on payments. Bottom line is you will pay a lot but it is more than worth it for the service and care they provide. -

I am new to Yelp and this is my first review, so here goes...
I started at Art of Modern Dentistry a little over a year ago. I hadn't been to a dentist in over 4 years and I knew I was due. After all, I was paying for insurance all this time, so I may as well use it, right? I visited the Lakeview office for a consultation and a cleaning. The cleaning was very professional, thorough and educational as they clearly explained every step. Yes the X- Rays were not pleasant with the big hunk of plastic you have to use, but you find this at every dentist, so I didn't think anything of it. Though my cleaning did NOT turn up any new cavities, they did however explain it was my choice to replace 3 old fillings that I have had since I was 10-12 years old due to "deterioration". This didn't surprise me as I had some temperature discomfort on one of these old fillings.
Fillings: Again, the process was very professional and I didn't ever wait long on any of my appointments. In fact at my most recent cleaning, they were waiting on me! My only drawback about the fillings process which I didn't think much of until I read other reviews here on Yelp was I had a bit of consistent discomfort for almost 5 days after the old fillings were replaced. At that point it went away and I haven't thought about it since.
Facilities: I have visited both facilities and by far the south loop facility is the bread and butter and quite larger. TVs on the wall to distract while they clean. Both facilities were very clean and very tidy restrooms. I noticed my hygienist was wiping down the X-Ray machine with Clorox wipes after each use to disinfect.
Invisilign: I have always wanted straight teeth and though they weren't horrible, I wanted them fixed without braces. The process of making the molds wasn't fun, but something about it brought me back to being a kid eating Play Dough. The process is interesting, you put in a new tray every 2 weeks slowly moving the teeth. They install "buttons" on four of your teeth to lock in the trays. Th buttons feel odd in your mouth, but they are removed when you are down with your trays. I am down to the last trays, and my tops look great, but I am not happy with the bottoms. I was told at my last cleaning visit that new molds would be made for the additional corrections at no additional cost. Also a free whitening is owed to me at the completion of the trays.
Personnel: Dr. Derakhshan is my dentist and she couldn't be better. Thorough, detailed, and professional. My least cleaning was performed at the South Loop office by a young lady fresh out of school named Courtney, but I was very impressed with her work and liked how they always explain what they are doing. The receptionist and I speak frequently as I am going to either office to get my trays and she couldn't be more facilitating and helpful.
I would give this 5 stars if it wasn't for the pain I experienced after my fillings were updated. I am surprised by the negative reviews, but I also understand a lot comes from the interaction with the actual dentist. You can have the nicest facilities, but it is the service that brings you back. I personally will be back, but if I do ever experience any of what has been reported, I will provide an update.
Hope this helps! -

South Loop Office
I have been going to AoMD for about 5 months now, since the first time I entered "anxiety", "dentist" and "south loop" in the same google search. After ignoring my teeth for so many years, I had created a psychological fear about dentists. I ignored my teeth for so long, that the prospect of going to the dentist sounded painful and expensive. Finally, my girlfriend and I decided to book appointments together for a cleaning and an assessment.
Over the past 5 months, I have gone from anxious and scared of the dentist to regular, getting everything done from composite fillings, zoom teeth whitening, root canals, crowns, onlays, and soon invisalign. Now, the biggest thing to remember about dentistry is it will never be cheap, but at least I was prepared by maxing out my dental insurance for 1 year to cover as much as possible, along with using an FSA account for tax free money to pay for it. Prepare, and it won't hurt as bad. These guys do excellent work! Any other reviewers that felt they left with a laundry list of things to be done, probably had a laundry list of things to be done. They actually underquoted what I needed done and waited until I couldn't stand the discomfort before they finally made a final call on upgrading a deep filling to a root canal. For this I was thankful, and understanding.
No need to spend much time discussing the trendy interior design and the calm music, but its there. The real kudos go to the people that work here.
Dr. Tosiou - She is a great dentist. She is anal about protecting the teeth and removing decay, and thats what you want from a dentist. She also never recommended that I remove my old metallic fillings to replace with composite ones. She only focused on the work that needed to be done.
(Soon to be USA Dr.) Andres - He has been my assistant through the whole procedure. He was a dentist in his home country and is only a short time from finalizing his certification to American dentistry. He is very kind and quick to explain everything that is happening, including giving me a tutorial on the tools and procedures for every new event. I felt more confident with the work being done with him by my side.
Sherri and Tracy - The receptionists weren't just smiling faces to greet you walking in from the cold. They both rigorously work with my insurance and then Careington Plan to find me what would save me the most money. They were quick to accomodate any schedule changes, and always gave me the information straight, even if the news was painful to hear.
Dr. Daftary - The owner, is also a fantastic person to be around, and I look forward to the Invisalign experience with either her or Dr. Tosiou in charge.
Anyone in need of a new dentist with an honest approach, look up Daftary and Tosiou. Both will keep you as comfortable as possible, and will turn your anxious moments into confidence in coming back every 6 months.
One negative point - The TV's are positioned TERRIBLY! I don't want to focus on something else when I'm upright and able to see the wall. I want to watch movies or Planet Earth or whatever when the drilling is going on. The TVs need to be ceiling mounted.
Other than that, thank you AoMD for taking care of me. -

These assholes continue to send me emails and mail to remind me to book appointments. Remember how you totally fucked up my mouth? And then called to say "Ahh, you left me a bad review....How can I get you to not do that?" Hey, here's an idea: DON'T BE NEGLIGENT WHEN YOU ARE DEALING WITH MY HEALTH. Yeah. I'll never stop talking about what complete and utter garbage this place is. Is my statute of limitations up yet? I'll look into that tomorrow.

Wow...I am so surprised to read some of the negative reviews here. I have been a client of the Art of Modern Dentistry for about 5 years and have never had a complaint.
The place is simply beautiful and the atmosphere is very comfortable, which I appreciate. Yes, the prices can make you dizzy, but you have the option to decline and go to a cheaper dentist - you get what you pay for!
The staff is very friendly; my dentist (Dr. Tosiou) is the BEST! I have never had a problem with the service or the billing, and if you ask questions - you get answers.
If you read my previous Yelp's, you'll know that I have a "tell it like it is" policy. -

My fiancee and I selected this dentist for the close proximity to our residence in the South Loop. My fiancee had two insurance policies. The office presented her with a treatment plan totaling $1600. Half was to be covered by her primary insurance plan. The office then refused to bill her secondary plan leaving it to our responsibility. It turned out that the office did not verify coverage properly. The found out that Michelle's initial policy was not covered at their office. The office then refused to place her permanent on-lay until she paid another $3200 in cash. The office reneged on their the total cost of the treatment plan and more than DOUBLED it to a total cost of nearly $4000!!! They refused to bill our secondary policy which is even recommended by the ADA.
Then, my fiancee's on-lay fell out and cracked twice. The dentist stated that the would replace the onlay with a crown. They stated there would be no extra out of pocket cost. Shortly after the procedure, a bill came for $262! It was their fault that the onlay fell out twice and they said we wouldn't be charged again.
If this office can't hire staff to properly bill dental insurance companies, why should I trust the dentist who hired the staff to do competent work?
The answer is that I just can not. I am in the process of filing a complaint for consumer fraud with the Illinois Attorney General and the Board of Dentistry. If there was a way to give ZERO stars, I would. -

So I sadly had to update this. I've been waiting for a retainer they said would take two weeks for three, and when I got a filling the other day they had to give me an extra shot because the novacaine wasn't working (which has never happened to me before) and the injection site is very sore (which also has never happened to me before). On top of that the filling wasn't done properly so it's shredding my floss. When I go back to get my retainer (whenever that may be) I'll have to get this filled.

I required extensive work on my teeth in the past 6 months (fillings, cleanings, root canal, etc). The service at Art of Modern Dentistry has always been professional and courteous every time. I have never waited longer then 5 minutes in the waiting room, which shows their respect for patients' time. Since I had a lot of work done, the dentists always took the time to explain why I needed a procedure. I was even showed a video once to explain a root canal in layman's terms, which I found kind of neat. Each patient area is equipped with a massive flat panel TV to watch TV during a procedure. The TV is also used for them to blow up a problem area a 100X bigger so you can see for yourself why a procedure is needed. The technology used in the office is very modern, yet the office still maintains a family dentist feel. All of this in addition to their absolutely GORGEOUS South Loop location. It's like walking into a spa instead of a dentist office. I would definitely recommend Art of Modern Dentistry South Loop for any and all dental procedures.

i've been a client for over 4 years now...and was thinking of changing dentist after my last appointment 6 months ago because of very poor service, sloppy dental checkup and fairly high dental fee... but i got busy and kept my 6 months checkup after all. -to my amazement, the service i got today was perfect...i can't ask for more! I love my hygienist Kourtney! She took the time to explain to me the common occurrence of gingivitis (due to my pregnancy), the reason behind built in tartar, and other common dental terminology. Dr. Sirrinn then came to check the work after Kourtney was done...and i like Dr. Sirrin as well...he did a throughout dental check. I think as long as Kourtney and Dr. Sirrin work there, i will be a client.
