I just got the best haircut I've ever gotten in this town. I have been literally driving to St. Louis to a my stylist there because nobody in this town knows how to cut straight hair!!! Every once in a while I venture out and try someone knew in hopes of finding my next stylist. I'm done looking. This friendly full service salon doesn't try to be fancy schmancy. They do what you ask without trying to sell you or schmooze you. The price is reasonable and you get what you want. No more spending a bunch of money and getting weird hair. They spend the time and give you the attention to detail as needed. Bona cut my hair and is exactly what I'm looking for in a stylist, her quality was superb. While there, I watched happy customers (men and women, some from out of town) come to the other stylists to get their hair done here. School was out for the day and a couple of the stylist kids were there and were well behaved and they helped out with things. I hope this place stays this way for a long time to come. I hate to share but there have to be others out there just like me. Give them a try.

Came here on a Monday at 10.45am so cannot comment on how things are on a weekend/during a really busy time but... the two ladies in the Salon were very friendly and spent a good deal of time cutting my hair, made adjustments when requested and the cut was $20 (without wash, think a wash is an extra $5). The haircut I left with was great and turned out way better than some of the other cuts I have had in the area. I have finally found my hairdresser in Lincoln Park/Old Town :)

Is it possible to give 6 stars?? Lina and Bona are great! I've never met two people who are so consistently in a good mood - especially when their job requires them to stand on their feet most of the day and work long hours!
I live 2 blocks away and stop in about every 2 weeks on my way home from work. I rarely need to wait...and if I do, it's only 5 or 10 minutes.
They both have a great sense of humor and Bona will laugh at just about anything you say, which is great for me because my jokes aren't very funny.
I'm very picky about my haircuts because I have very straight hair and it can't really be "styled." It just sticks out on the sides, so I need a nice tight cut on the sides so my head doesn't look like a giant Q-Tip. It's hard to find someone who gets this. They get it. They listen. They put the mirror up and ask what you think, and then cut it some more if it's needed. However, that's just a formality now, as they got it down. I go in looking like Kevin Bacon and come out looking like Tom Cruise (Top Gun Tom Cruise, not crazy Tom Cruise).
A few tips - Bona likes chocolate, so if you happen to come in on a Tuesday when she's off (and she finds out)...this is a good way to get out of the doghouse. Lina doesn't let herself eat chocolate...but I gave her some for the holidays anyway last year. She gave it to Bona, but I'm sure she snuck a piece or two when no one was looking. I've never met a woman that can resist chocolate, so I don't believe her when she says she doesn't eat it.
I even got a date there once...well almost. I got a phone number from the girl in the chair next to me. She seemed interested at first, but pretty much blew me off after a series of calls and text messages. Her loss! ;) I hadn't been completely blown off in a while, so it was a little embarrassing, but well worth it because Lina and Bona got a kick out of it. I have to say it was the first time I ever asked anyone out in a barber shop, but that's the type of environment you're in - very friendly and comfortable...to the point where you don't mind asking out some random next to you.
Don't worry ladies, I've learned my lesson. Go visit Lina and Bona without the fear of some random guy hitting on you! ;) -

I live in the neighborhood and usually find somewhere in River North to go get wax/threadings.
I walk by this place everyday on my way to the gym and one day decided to stop by for eyebrow threading.
The two ladies that work in there are SO nice! I can not recall her name, but the one who took care of me was super good. She did a fantastic job and was very professional and friendly.
$12.00 for great eyebrow threading less than a block away from you house... what else would you ask for.
I've found a hair salon I love up in Lakeview so don't think I'm going to change anytime soon, but will definitely go back to Art of Hair Design for any waxing or threading need. -

In my last post, I said that I hadn't had a cut or color there yet. Well, I recently had both a cut and color (single process and highlights) both by Bona, and she did a fabulous job. Much better than my cut and color experience at the Marianne Strokirk (sp?) in the past (and at a fraction of the cost). I can't say enough about this little salon! So pleased.

I have lived in Chicago for 4 years and haven't stayed loyal to 1 salon! This is crazy because I get my hair done every 3 months!
I have struggled (until now) to find: people who "get it," give me exactly what I ask for and have reasonable pricing in a relaxed environment. Is that too much to ask for?! :)
I live a street over- on Dearborn but had never noticed the little space, probably because there's always a lot going on at that Clark & North intersection. It's right next to that old theater on Clark that has been shut down for a while.
The place was more of a barber shop until the new owners moved in about a year ago. They do hair, waxing, treading, etc.
The sweetest ladies run this salon. I really enjoyed chatting with genuinely nice, down to Earth women who are the furthest thing from snobby. At other salons you are left waiting while the stylist goes to another client, I've even been asked to blow dry my own hair if I didn't want to pay ($60) for a blow out! These ladies made me feel well taken care of and attended to.
I felt like she really understood my hair and made well thought out suggestions based on how I explained my goals for my color.
I got exactly what I wanted for a GREAT price. I felt so comfortable, like I was hanging out with friends. Art of Hair Design is a true hidden gem. I can't wait to go back! -

I had purple hair (yes, I tried to dye it myself) and it was a Monday (the day when most salons aren't even open). I frantically searched for any salon that was open and would take me on a Monday evening to fix the hot mess I had on my head. Thankfully I found Art of Hair!
The ladies took me in and didn't judge me and my purple hair. Lina and Bona were so sweet, they both talked to me and kept me company while I had my color in. And Lina got my hair the exact color I was originally hoping for - and two weeks later, it still looks awesome, no fading (especially impressive since it's a red color).
Couldn't have asked for better service or better results. And I only paid $60 for the color - I was sure I'd pay an arm and a leg to fix what I had done to my hair. They even hooked me up with a deep conditioner session since I was dying my hair twice within a couple days.
Definitely recommend this very down to earth, friendly and professional salon! -

I must admit, I never really yelp, mostly out of laziness...However this place was so amazing I feel the need to share it with the Yelp community!
Thank goodness for FINALLY finding that place I've been looking for!
I have been looking for a great go to place where the stylists actually listen to you...and somewhere that is nice and relaxing...doesn't charge you an arm and a leg...and the stylists are nice and relaxed. Check, check and CHECK!
I went in to have them thread my eyebrows because the salon is literally a block from my apartment. They were so nice and honest and gave me some great tips about what I can do to make my eyebrows better...I figured if they were that considerate and helpful with eyebrows then they would have to be great with hair! Impulsively I decided to go back a half an hour later and get my hair hi-lighted.
The women that run the salon took the time to listen to exactly what I wanted...they were genuinely a pleasure to talk to...my time there flew and I can't wait to go back. As an added bonus, I have been wanting side-swept bangs for quite some time...every time I attempt them the stylist has cut them way to short and I end up spending the next few months doing everything in my power to hide them! My stylist happened to have the bangs I've been DYING for and I asked if she would mind trimming my bangs to look like hers, even though I wasn't getting a cut. She was so great about it...and they also blow dried my hair even though I didn't get a cut. I've had many a hi-light experiences where they send me out with wet hair...not so fun.
My hi-lights look AMAZING...and somehow even without a cut they managed to make my hair look amazing too. Now I just can't wait for my boyfriend to get home...somehow I have a feeling he is going to like the new do, too! :)
P.S...Did I mention that for the hi-lights, good company and bang trim cost a mere $75!?!?!? I have officially found my go-to place...and can't wait to go back. -

i LOVE this place! i have been hopping around to different hair places and never quite get what i want for the price i'm paying. here, they listened, Lina made a few suggestions and explained why i had probably not been pleased with past results, and offered an idea. the results were excellent, a cut that still looks great a few months later and highlights that blend well. the price is also a plus.
