The Art of Beer Festival at the Mendel Center in Benton Harbor had some good points and bad points.

The selection of Michigan craft beers was outstanding.  There were over 24 different breweries from around the state and one from Illinois represented.  Most of the breweries featured an IPA selection which I appreciated and many had fruit flavored varieties which my wife appreciated.  The only downside of the beer side of the event was the many of the breweries did not have a representative on hand to answer questions.  Instead they utilized local volunteers (hats off to the volunteers though) to pour the beers.  They were generally unable to answer specific questions regarding their offerings.

The festival featured a showing of the Michigan beer movie "Locally Buzzed" which I found to be very entertaining and hilarious at points.

Now for the downsides of the festivals - music and food.  The music was awful...typical headbanger, kegger music that you may remember from high school.  At one point during the performance the lead singer of one of the bands stopped singing and said "uhhhh...I lost the lyrics."  Very amateur performers.  The very small attendance at the music venue leads me to believe that  the majority of the attendees of this event probably would have appreciated some acoustic music or jazz - but that is just a guess.

Now to the food - brats, hot dogs and jalapeno chips.  How about some cheese or fruit to complement the different beers we are trying?

This is the 1st of, I hope many, Art of Beer Festivals here in Michigan.
