This place is a little easy to miss. Judging from the exterior of the building, it was not impressive. The parking place was on the side of the road. Once you got inside, they have a lot of interesting car photography as well as the art cars themselves. The cars were very impressive. Unique and very elaborated!
The staffs were friendly. Admission was free. So don't miss this place. Check out the link below to my flickr page for the art car photos.

Yet another review I should've written years ago.
Whether you're looking to explore the city's hidden gems, looking for a fun activity for the family or entertaining some out-of-towners, the Art Car Museum is a must. I catch the parade every year, but the museum features changing exhibits that go beyond "art car." I remember the last one I checked out was "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," which, you can imagine covered a whole gamut of transportation in the form of art: video installations, paintings, photographs and real life models.
It's free, but for some good karma - and to keep this museum up and running - make a donation, please. :) -

Pretty cool place to check out some multimedia art. It's more than art cars! Of course, there are art cars there, but there are also art installations. When I went this week, there was an art exhibit by 14 different women artists appropriately named "Fourteen". The exhibit included paintings, art cars, installation pieces, and even TV media pieces.
My only gripe is that the place is way too warm inside. The very nice lady at the front desk was wearing a long sleeve shirt and a sweater and had the place at close to 80 degrees (no joke). My cousin and I spent a little less time in there than we would have because of the heat. I mentioned it to the nice lady and she said "Oh, I'll go turn off the heat". She had the heat on!
Definitely stop by this place, check out the art cars and any exhibits they have going, as they change regularly. There is enough room for 2 cars to fit in the small parking space in front of the garage like opening on the building. It's totally fine to park there.
And of course, this museum is FREE.Listed in: Houston Art, The Out of Towners

I randomly stopped in on a Saturday afternoon when I noticed it as I drove by. I am a huge museum junkie and can't pass up the chance to check one out (even if I do have to make a few dangerous u-turns...). I naturally assumed that the art car museum would just be full of art cars, but this museum is so much more than that! The current exhibit is themed around the gulf coast and is a compilation of pieces from local artists.
Pieces found here range from paintings to sculptures; to (you guessed it!) art cars. The cars are exquisitely breathtaking. I was in awe of the amount of time and detail used to transform these unassuming modes of transportation into gorgeous works of art. I also love that the building is made to look like the front of a car. This just adds to the originality of the entire place.
I love museums so finding such a unique one so close to where I live is very exciting for me! I talked to the lady at the front desk (curator?) and was informed that they change their themes out every few months. I am looking forward to see what they have in store for the public next :) -

Visited today with my husband and the in-laws. We were a little confused about parking since there's only a very small amount of room, but as we were the only people there at the time it was fine.
Before we entered we were greeted by a friendly museum staffer who told us about the art car outside. After entering we were informed of the exhibit showcasing Barbara Jones, her pieces were throughout the museum.
I think it was pretty clear that the best part of the museum for my family was the art cars, and the movies being played. I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibit and spent about 45 minutes learning about the life of a woman who recently passed to cancer.
We'll be back soon to check out the new exhibits. -

Really cool but I expected to see cars. There were maybe 3 total. Bummer. But free always rocks. Worth checking out.

I drive a Volvo station wagon, and am probably more concerned with having a good stereo in the car than what's under the hood, but the permanent exhibits in this museum are things of beauty.
Whether it's actual art cars, paintings, a set of tires, a stretch go-cart or a Harley, each piece reflects our society's fascination and dependence on the open road. We're all trying to get some place, aren't we? Think about all the songs that are about driving -- "Drive" by The Cars, "Greased Lightnin'" of course, Prince's "Little Red Corvette," Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" -- well they all get conjured up here.
Admission is free (they accept donations), which makes it even more imperative to get your own auto and floor it on over!Listed in: Nish Visits Houston

This place is surprisingly huge on the inside! When we parked on the street (there is not visible parking lot available that I could see), the outside looks tiny. I was curious how more than one car could fit into such a tiny building, but I was already excited by the cool stuff in the front yard area.
The thing about the Art Car Museum is that it isn't just about the cars! They have plenty of other art to look at and that was actually the highlight for me. I enjoyed seeing the different rooms that allowed us to meander while getting different tastes of the work.
As far as the cars readily available in the museum, it was a nice mix, and especially if you haven't been to the parade, this will be a blast. If you've seen the parade, you may be a bit disappointed with how few cars are on display, but it is still very entertaining.
There are a few tvs with some of the exhibits giving some background info, but in general it has that library quiet to it which is a bit strange for an unconventional museum. The people at the front were friendly, but decidedly comfortable in their chairs. When you have guests in town, I definitely recommend this place.Listed in: Being a Tour Guide in Houston

I'm so thankful Houston has such an awesome place to call it's own. best of all, FREE of charge. there are so many talented people in this city and the staff at the Art Car Museum can talk to you about the the work being displayed. it's not all cars either. there are sculptures, paintings, and flyers for upcoming concerts. A great establishment that any native houstonian should visit.

I seem to always miss the parade so when I did a little search I found out there was an actual museum that hosts shows throughout the year.
I was able to catch their latest exhibit, the 5th annual open call.
It was cool because it was good a mix of everything. They had wall art, bikes, cars, and contraptions.
I really do like this type of art. It's like Contemporary Craft but full of AWESOMENESS! (Sorry, too much How I met your mother)
My favorite piece was the Tractor Bike by Jim Robertson.
This place is Also FREE and you are allowed to take pictures at will.Listed in: Houston: Museums

If you haven't made it down to the Art Car Parade in May, you should check out the Art Car Museum for a glimpse of what you're missing out on!
With free admission, you can browse the current exhibits at the Art Car Museum and find out how people are making the most of their wheels. It is amazing to see the variety of ways people can express themselves through artistically altering their automobiles. There are some great exhibits and this is an art form that accepts anything with tires. If you can get it rolling, you can be part of the Art Car movement.
Each time I encounter an Art Car or visit the museum, I am inspired to buy an older car and fix it up in new and unusual ways. So far, I haven't done it but my ideas are always sparked by this unusual and fun museum.
The Art Car Museum will give you a taste of what you can expect to see on the roads at the parade but it is nice to get to see a few of the works up close and stationary. The Art Car Museum is an unusual and fun approach to art that takes all kinds. -

The gallery consists of about four rooms with a mix of art pieces of all kinds. I was expecting a bunch of cars but they only keep a handful in the museum itself.
It's not the biggest collection in the world but it's a way to spend about 45 minutes through some local art. -

I came here for this event. It was pretty cool. Unfortunately, they didn't have this exact car, but they had other art cars. The museum was smaller than I expected, but the cars were cool. A little on the creepy side, but that's to be expected from Scrapdaddy. I would go back and check out other exhibits.

My favorite event in Houston is the art car parade that they put on in May. You absolutely must see it. And R.I.P. to the last curator who was killed by a drunk driver at the end of this past parade.

If you think Houston is full of conservative Nazis, think again. Houston's art car museum proves that there are weirdoes with transport methods beyond Burning Man. Just call ahead to make sure it's open.

Love this place! I went with a girlfriend and her siblings and we had a great afternoon looking at pictures of various art cars and checking out retired art cars in the back. I hate that I'm never in town for the actual parade!
