For my 100th review I decided to give a shout-out to someone who really deserves it. Her name is Isobel, she works at Art+Science, and she is a dream come true.
Since moving to Chicago 6 years ago I've tried 4 different salons. I started at Trilogy, which was awful, moved onto Fringe, which was great until my stylist left to become a pharmacist/pro skateboarder (seriously), then went to Big Hair, where I got awesome pink color but less awesome haircuts. (Actually, I thought they were okay until it was pointed out to me that I had a giant hole in the right side of my hair.)
I realized that saving money at a cheaper salon wasn't worth the damage I was doing to my hair. I went to the A+S website and found that a discount was offered for first time clients with 2 of the stylists. And that's how I found Isobel. Or really, how we found each other.
Besides being absolutely adorable, Isobel is pretty much a genius stylist. She actually listens to what you're saying, and helps to realize your dream haircut. She is responsible for the wicked asymmetrical bob I'm currently sporting.
Granted, I can only afford to go about 4 times a year, but in those times, it's totally worth it. Isobel is now at the $60 point, but it's so, so worth it.

5 stars for Mikael. She provides a fantastic haircut and witty commentary during your visit. Also she listens to what you want and makes it happen on your head like some sort of magician with scissors and a blow dryer.

At the time I visited Art and Science my hairstylist of ten years was living in California so I had no choice but to venture out and go to a new stylist. I dont remember her name right now, but the girl who cut my hair had just moved here from Wisconsin. She was really nice. I was glad to go to someone with curly hair since sometimes hair stylist have a difficult time with curly hair. At the end of my haircut she didn't feel like blowing it dry so she told me she's set it curly to see the hair cut. I was cool with that until she sat me under a dryer instead of diffusing it herself. My hair was still wet when I left. I gave her another chance and the second time I went it was bad. She decided she would blow dry my hair straight which really isn't difficult at all. My hair is curly but manageable. She started blow drying my hair when I saw her through the mirror mouthing to an assistant HELP! At this point I wanted to run out. I've never had anyone not know what to do with my hair. My hair is not even long, and this girl couldn't blow dry it straight. Eventually she did it, but she had a guy waiting while she finished me. The same thing happened to my friend, and she doesn't have curly hair. This girl never booked out enough time for our haircuts and was always in a rush to get us out.
My former stylist at Mario Tricoci just abruptly left with no information as to where she was going. I nearly cried, because it took me forever to find her.
I was looking in all the wrong places, apparently, because my first cut from Charlie at Art & Science rules. His service is really great. I didn't give him much direction--just that I wanted to keep my bangs but change my layers--and he totally rocked it. Before he shampooed me, he talked to me about my face shape, and how the cut would complement it. It felt like he knew what he was doing, so I wasn't nervous to let him have at it.
It looks great, and it really does everything he promised it would!
(And as an aside, I always feel horribly awkward trying to talk to my stylist but Charlie was professional and fun to talk to.)

Art + Science is laid-back and cool. Micheal does a GREAT job listening to what you want, making suggestions based on your hair and trends, and then executing on what you decide together. She asks questions as she cuts, so there's never a "OMG that is too short" moment.
Also, I think the cuts are very reasonably priced....I recently paid $55 for my cut. Bang trims are FREE.
I've gotten so many compliments on my "classic but modern" cuts. Thanks Micheal and Art + Science!
Nicole will fix you right up! I moved away from Chicago 6 years ago, and I still go back to Nicole when stylists in Ann Arbor and Seattle screw up my hair. She did lots of hair for my friend's wedding this weekend and that visit reminded me I should post a review. Save yourself and your hair. Go to art + science. If you can't get in to see Nicole, try Betty or Isobel. The place is laid back, parking's pretty easy, you'll look great when you leave, and you'll be able to reproduce the look on your own.
At an open house, I was admiring this girl's haircut. Lucky for me, my sister knew her and I asked who did her hair as we both had really curly hair. She gave me Paul's name at Art + Science and I made an appointment the next day. Paul took my super long curly hair and turned it into one of the most amazing short haircuts I've ever had. He is a genius with curly hair and he is also very friendly. I highly recommend him ($75.00 for a cut).

Best haircut of my life!
I came to Mikael after reading reviews here about how great she is with curly hair. I have been flat-ironing my curls for as long as I can remember and finally I decided that enough was enough. I think that my problem was that no one ever really showed me how to care for my hair.
Mikael had me tell her what I was trying to achieve, then let me flip through a book and point to hairstyles that interested me then chopped away. She even numbed me a little with wine since I was pretty freaked out about chopping my long hair.
The result was phenomenal. I've never had my hair above my shoulder, but it looks amazing. Little did I know that less is more when it comes to putting product in my curls. Also, I can still wear my 'do long and past my shoulder if I flat-iron it although Mikael lectured me on learning to embrace my curls :)
Honestly, I never knew my curly hair could look this way. I just about cried and kissed her when she was done.
I ended up buying 3 products along with my cut & style and paid only a little over $100. This was my first time at Art & Science and I can now say that I adore this place!
I'm not someone who likes to sit in a salon chair and talk uncomfortable shit for an hour and a half, or however long it takes the stylist to do their job. Lucky for me, Art & Science is never like that.
I used to see Charlie (the best stylist in the universe), but when he left, I started going to Kim (somehow, ALSO the best stylist in the universe). What makes these people so good is not only their skill, but their inability and unwillingness to bullshit you if you want something that's just not going to work for your hair type.
I tell them what I want, they check it out, tell me what will work and what definitely will not work, and go over step-by-step how I can make it look like that on the daily. I end up with a cut that is completely manageable and cute, and still has all of the components of what I wanted when I walked in.
I've never paid more than $50 for an awesome cut & style there, so I don't know what these people are talking about. The place is pretty hip, but full of all kinds and types of people, so you never feel like you're some indie rock chick hanging out alone at Le Passage. The staff is friendly and approachable, and as aforesaid, nobody expects you to sit around and make weird small-talk while they work around your head. I hate that.

"A Dream's a Wish Your Heart Makes"-Cinderella
Let me tell you a little story about a burning scalp and art and science in wicker park.
They called for models. Sounded like a good time. My stylist told me I should come. It would be peace and drugs and all that shit. So I went. I hoped that I'd walk out with a renewed look and sense of self. Re-invent me art and science.
It didn't go down the way they tell it in the storybooks. It never does.
#1 They told me I would be blond. My stylist had previously told me I could choose my color. I am NOT a blond. #2 They gave me alcohol to numb the shock and pain. #3 THEY BURNED THE LIVING *bleeeeeeeeeeeeep* out of my head. #4 When I told them that my scalp burned and I was crying she told me it was normal and that she would not take it off of my scalp.
The following day I looked like an albino and I had scabs on my scalp.
Dreams do come true....in the form of nightmares.

Nicole isn't just good at cutting hair, she's good at cutting individual clients' hair. She always strikes the right balance between what I say I want and what my stick-straight hair will actually do. She's really creative and always listens to my desires, however unrealistic. Every haircut she's given me has been exceptional -- not just cute or fun or servicable, but wonderful.
It is expensive. If you told me 5 years ago that I would someday pay more than $50 for a haircut, I would have thought you were crazy. But honestly, getting a cheaper haircut anywhere else is just $20 or $30 wasted, whereas getting a haircut from Nicole is $50 well invested.
Mikael was a cool chickael...and she 'gets' curly hair.
I was shocked to learn that A&S offers complimentary bang trims at any location if you're a client. Complimentary means free...free means yay.

Art & Science gets 5 stars from me because Kim is amazing. Every single haircut Kim has given me has elicited unending compliments from friends, coworkers and literally strangers--one recently at MDW. Kim has been cutting my hair since spring 2007, and I love her: always professional, just the right amount of chat, responsive/creative/encouraging about cut choices, excellent eye for style and a great cut.
I recently decided to move to Boston in the fall of '08--I hope that I'm able to find a stylist as talented as Kim at Art & Science in Chicago!
I see Mikahel (spelling?) here at the Wicker Park location. Never before have I had someone so great that I can trust. I'm not one of those people who knows what do do with my hair, but I want it to be hip and fun, and she has taken me from long princess hair to having the short sassy hair I have now, that totally suits me.
I trust her completely, she's the best. She'll figure out who you are and help you have that hair...so don't be intimidated by the hipsterville world of Art + Science. They are great.

I want to start by saying I am a man, not a miser but not lavish by any means either. That being said; I am writing this review for men and men only (or women planning on sending a man to Art & Science for his next cut).
I have no opinion good or bad about A&S as a establishment for women. Women generally have longer hair which I am guessing requires more detail than my average Joe haircut and maybe the good folks at A&S are the Cats Pajamas at dye jobs...
I'm used to paying $10 to $20 for a hair cut. I kind of freak out inside my head when the price is twenty dollars and quietly write the place off as a "never going there again". I generally get the same cut every three weeks or so. Not hard. I sit down I say "make it shorter" They giggle and say "okay, how short?" I say "I don't know about this much" and then hold up my hand with my thumb and index finger extended making a gesture of maybe a half inch or so. And that is that.
I don't know what I was thinking going to A&S. I am so NOT the type of guy that would go here.
$52 + tip......... ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS?
Never again

Her name is Jessica. She is the BEST. Call her for your next appointment.
THE END.
Since moving to Chicago 3 years ago I haven't had a regular go-to place for my hair. For the first 2.9 years that was fine - I had long hair and resolved not to cut it, so I didn't unless I was out of town. All that changed after a trip to San Francisco, a sudden desire to get rid of the hair, and a fairly bad 'do that needed some serious fixing.
Through Yelp I found a salon in Chicago that did a good job and was fun. I made three appointments there over a 4 month period (short hair grows fast!). The first two times that I went I was there for at least 2 hours in the chair. But I was patient. Grouchy after 2 hours, but patient. This last time though...first my appointment was pushed back by 30 minutes. Then I was summarily dismissed when the next appointment walked in, a friend of my stylist. My hair was not finished to my satisfaction and I left very displeased. Angry, in fact.
For 1-1/2 days I fumed about my haircut. It wasn't right. I was explicit in my instructions but my stylist didn't listen because she ran out of time. And that was it. I was done with her. But I still had to get my hair fixed. In desperation I searched Yelp again for a new salon, a new stylist, focusing on Art + Science after I saw a woman with great hair who told me she went there.
I made one phone call to Art + Science and explained how my hair needed to be fixed. I needed a stylist with short hair experience, the ability to fix my 'do, and availability the next day. I was desperate. The receptionist slotted me in with Isobel, a cool cat with 3 years of experience at the salon. Only in her early 20s, Isobel has been cutting her own hair for years and possesses the confidence and skill of someone much, much older and experienced.
Isobel was punctual and friendly and very accommodating. Because she didn't wash or dry my hair, she charged me only $30 to fix what I had originally paid full price for at the other salon. She listened closely to what I told her I wanted and was surprisingly conservative with some of her recommendations ("let your hair grow out and we can fix it as we go"). She was fast. And fun to talk to. Or maybe I was just super amped on caffeine. Oh dear. I hope she wasn't bored by my chatter.
Isobel, I'll be back.

First off - i found this salon via Souk next door - sadly another victim of the gentrification of WP, but i digress. Began getting my short short hair cut by Charlie, a cool very young dude who struck off to India in 2006, so he recommended me to Isobel. Very young but she has all the qualities i seek in a hairstylist: polite, as punctual as can be, easy to schedule, inspired, individualistic in approach, friendly, and willing to give gratis trims in between cuts.
The less-than-five stars are for the physical space and impossible parking situ: they cannot help the lack of parking, but the place is appealing to the eye, not too loud, and they display guest artists' work. But that bling bling piece of orange ... umm, OK, this is a public forum - furniture, that chaise for those of us who are waiting ... it is the most uncomfortable thing i've ever encountered! i also think it is grotesquely ugly, but hey that's just my opinion. surely the owners can find a suitable replacement in a likewise orange hue.

I love these two girls and I love this salon. I've been going here for a little over a year and a half now and after all the places i've tried in the city, im sticking with this one for good.
Not only is this place NOT pretentious at all, but you can have a glass of wine if you had a stressful day.
Yvette and Nicole are two of the sweetest girls i've ever met and they are now two very good friends!! I trust them so much that I just sit down and tell them to do whatever they want if im bored with my look and they do a great job every time. The girls at the front desk are super sweet too!

One of my friends went here and came back with the cutest haircut ever. So I decided to give it a try. Michael (sp?) did my hair - she was aweome. Very friendly, but not overly chatty, didn't push any products, gave me lots of good advice, and most importantly gave me a haircut I was very happy with.
I'm taking away one star for the price, though. I mean, I'm very satisfied with the result and I'll definitely go again, but the price does make me wince a little inside.

I moved to chicago 3 months ago from LA and needed a my hair done desperately and couldn't get back home. My two new co-workers referred me to Tara, so I broke down and gave her a shot. Now I know I won't be needing to go back to LA just to get my hair cut. She was just as good as my guy back home. It's not easy to find someone you click with and who's got the talent. What a relieve! I'll be back

I originally went here through a referral by one of my friends after getting sick of having to get a new stylist every time I got a haircut at my old salon.
A few things about Art & Science:
It is hipster-ish, and I am not. I still feel comfortable there.
It is expensive. Most of my friends flip when I tell them what I pay...
Paul is the best damned stylist I have ever ever ever ever had.
It is worth the expense to go in to a salon trusting thatyour hair will look great when you leave. Paul never pushes products, he always listens to what I want, and will make suggestions on what can work for my hair if I am feeling daring.
Once you try Art & Science you will never stray to another salon again.
I have been going to Art and Science for 2 years now and I am very pleased with my stylist Tara. She knows exactly how to style my hair without me having to say anything. Recently she suggested and then gave me a dramatic cut ( went from very long hair to a bob) and I've gotten so many compliments on it. I like her so much I recommended her to a guy I was only dating at the time since he had never been to a salon, only supercuts. He was very pleased. I highly recommend her or any other stylist in that salon. I have never seen anyone walk out dis-satisfied.

I came in on a whim as I desperately needed a cut before heading to LA for my brother's wedding. I haven't had a regular stylist for about a year and the guy I was kind of seeing was out of town.
Several of the reviews I had read mentioned it was pricey so I was a little nervous but figured, oh well, gotta do it. It was $55+tip which I thought was reasonable for a salon. Of course it's more expensive than Supercuts, but that's apples and oranges.
Mikael cut my hair and did a great job. I got sooo many compliments! She gave me lots of tips on styling, what do for my next cut, and mentioned they have complimentary bang trims. It was my first time there, but the conversation was so easy and relaxed that I felt like Mikael had been styling my hair for years.

I haven't had a steady hairstylist for three years. I'm cursed. I swear, the moment I settle in with a stylist, they end up moving to another state. It's happened four times! So I gave up.
I've been a hair model for Art & Science numerous times, and I have never been disappointed with the cut or color. The stylists are friendly and always have very creative ideas. Since the stylists I see are in training, the cut takes a bit longer but there are educators to oversee everything. I got an amazing hair cut last night, and my stylist Ashley was able to fix the BAD trim I got at Supercuts. Being a hair model helps me save some money on a cut or color that would cost me a lot more anywhere else. They don't push product on you, which is good because it's one of my pet peeves about getting a haircut at other salons. (No thank you, I'll buy the same thing at Sally's for a lot less.)

A month ago i won a gift certificate from a silent auction from a benifit i attended. I had never been to art and science before but i have heard many good things about it. My styilist and colorist were not only talented but you could tell they are up to date on their skills. It was a very chill atmosphere and everyone was down to earth. The shampo girl was even super! Let me just start off by saying that I love the stylist I've been seeing, Paul. He's super. He's great at listening to my direction, but also suggesting options and also helping me better understand what I want.
So, that said, I'm growing my hair out for the first time, and Paul's been super.
The desk staff is a bit snotty. Trying to get an appointment is kinda an ordeal - they just say "no" without offering alternatives. You have to keep asking for different days/times. When I was in there last time, the receptionist asked me if I wanted something to drink, I asked for green tea and sat down to wait. She got up and went to the tea cart I hadnt noticed just behind me - and annoyed, poured me a tea. She could have just said, there's tea and coffee behind you, help yourself - I didn't want her to wait on me, necessarily.
Recently, I've read a bit about Twisted Scissors and I think I'm going to try them out. Not because I don't love you Paul. You're like my hair-boyfriend. But because $90 for a men's cut is just a bit excessive for my taste.
If it doesn't go well at TS, I'll be back. And I swear I'll never stray again.
**********************
Update:
After two cuts at other salons (inc. Twisted Scissors) I am back to A&S. Paul is just too amazing. It's pricey, but I've come to realize that you're paying for skill, vision and comfort. Comfort is key. I know I'm gonna go drop some cash, but I also know I'm going to love my hair when I leave. Little risk.
I'm sorry I ever doubted you, A&S!

I HATE HATE HATE salons...I hate getting my hair cut. I hate paying out the wazz to have some cooler-than-thou, snotty-assed stylist condescend to me 'cause I speak up for myself, then walk out an hour and a half later with an overly-blown and product-heavy crappy cut, a lighter wallet, and a feeling like I was violated.
This is why I LOVE Art + Science. From its outer appearance, it truly looks like one of those above-described salons: modern, minimalist design, hipster-looking stylists that look like they're in a cool rock-band at night. But not ONE of the people I've ever encountered there are the least big snooty or condescending. I've only experienced 2 stylists there (more about that later), but both were patient, both not only listened to my input but HEARD me, both involved me in the process, and both gave me a great cut.
I went there to see Patrick by recommendation. He was great. But when I tried to get him again I found that had become increasingly hard: apparently many others thought he was pretty great too. So, having only a couple of small windows I could schedule a cut, I decided to take a chance on whoever they offered - I got Nicole. Nicole rawks the locks!!! She has been the ONLY stylist to give me the cut I somehow knew could be but no one else has ever been able to figure out. And it's SO simple! She even had a name for it - though I can't remember it now. And while everyone else under the sun wanted to razor-layer my hair, she heard me and gave me the thick blunt layers I asked for.
Product: I have NEVER felt as though product has been pushed on me there. Conversely, I have often been talked out of buying stuff based on my actual needs. Plus, if I bought it but didn't like it, they have a policy where you can return it for a full-price refund.
Does it get any better than this?

(If you want to schedule with her, just message me and I'll give you her email...you can't schedule with the salon directly to be a "model.") Thanks for the heads up Jamie K! :)

This was a nice place for a haircut, really hip and cool and no pretense. I came out cleaned up and ready for my job interviews. The plus side too is location. After your cut you can meet up with your buddies for drinks across the street at the Irish pub. Not sure if I would go back since it was close to $65 for the cut with tip. But if you can spend the cash check it out.
i have been in chicago for five years, but was unable to find a stylist that didnt make me cry. then i found mikael! thank god. she is awesome. she took the time to talk about what i wanted and did her very best to deliver. i would recommend her to anyone. especially someone with curly hair.

If you want to pay way too much for a haircut you could easily get at Supercuts, then march right in to Art+Science!
I went twice in 2006 for a haircut here and neither time did they do what I asked. The second time I went I'd barely call it a haircut. It seemed the woman (Jessica) was afraid to cut my hair, and all I had asked for were some layers and a bit of a shorter crown. I kept having to direct her. I basically paid $50 for her to play with my hair for an hour.
I think it's a common misperception that if a place charges a lot, takes a long time, does a lot of texturizing, and serves booze, they are super hip and cutting edge. In reality, salons like this make money off their "cool factor." The trainees here make minimum wage for upwards of two years just to train in the Art+Science "methods," and customers are raped by the prices.
So. over. it.

I went on a Monday (for those of you who don't know, they offer free services in their Advanced Training Program - check out simplysalons.com) and had my hair colored a few times for free. The color jobs were always great, and my stylists were friendly, but I'd have to say that the desk staff was sort of rude both times I went. I felt as if I was at the DMV instead of at a salon - (i.e. "Next? That'll be $15" with no personality), which maybe is the result of the free day. Anyway, worth it to get your hair done affordably, but don't look for fantastic service on these nights.

I just needed to comment on how great the customer service is here. Christin is my stylist and I would recommend her to anyone! After my first visit a few months back, she sent me a handwritten card in the mail thanking me for coming to Art & Science and referenced something we talked about when I was in (so I know the message was not generic!).
She also sent me a coupon for 20% off my next hair appt. Their organic products are awesome and they last a long time, so the price is worth it (not to mention I think everything is buy 2 get 1 free)! All this and they give a fabulous haircut! Went their today for the first time with a friend - who has been a happy customer for quite some time. We both went for style cuts from GIL, who is a sweetheart - and an expert stylist! He's the first stylist to really give me good advice on how to cut my sideburns, blowdry my hair for some height, what kind and how much product to use, etc.
I am super pleased with my cut, and am confident I got good info grom Gil on how to maintain a good look for my hair type (fine and limp, I must say!).
And they give free touch-ups between cuts, so it makes the price a great value!
Oh, I'll be back - you can count on it!

I scheduled an appointment with Jessica, who I hadn't heard anything about. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my hair either, so I got there early, prepared to look through the style books. But there were none! They just have magazines, such as Paper, Details, and Nylon. That kind of sucked, because I didn't want to scour through magazines for interesting haircuts. Oh well, they gave me wine while I waited, so that helped! Almost everyone who works there has curly/wavy asymmetrical hair that looks like a fan blew it to one side and they hair sprayed it in place. It's definitely not what people on the street are doing, but it also looks dumb when like, 5 girls are doing the same thing in the same room. Oh well, I appreciate that they're trying to be avant garde!
I thought the girl at the desk was very nice, and so was Jessica. I explained kinda what I wanted and that I've had pretty much the same kind of hipster shaggy mullet type thing for years, and that I've been going to the same hairdresser since high school. She cut me out a new 'do that was pretty much exactly what I wanted. She also didn't try to push any products on me, and was overall a cool girl.
The only problem was when I got home and shook my head around, some stray pieces stick out of my bangs. And I got this extremely blunt bang cut going on, so any unevenness looks pretty obvious. So I have to trim the little pieces myself. I mean they are tiny stray hairs, and I'm sure we've all had this problem at some point, but I just don't want it to happen after I spend $60...
