Monterey Park, CA
This place was fantastic for a beginner like me to run. I really dig not having to dodge cars like I do in East LA, and have to worry about how much I'm running like I do when I'm on a track. The trail is unpaved and "rustic" for lack of a less stupid word, and the funny thing about it is it makes running a bit more fun. A bit more like an adventure.
Class Notes:
- I was easily able to find parking (mind you that I go during the weekday)
- Beautiful Scenery as everyone else on Yelp has mentioned
- You get to run past horses
- AND... there are plenty of trees and shrubbery to keep you cool on the warmer days.
Thank you Arroyo Seco Park. -

Four stars for:
a) lots of tennis courts.
b) lots of lit tennis courts.
c) lots of lit tennis courts that stay lit till 10:30~ish (a little earlier, but sometimes you can turn the lights back on for a few minutes)
d) lots of parking
Minus one star for:
a) plenty of homeless people that sometimes go onto the court, and like last night, ask you to call 911, then say that everything is okay when the paramedics are there. or the homeless people that just hang around and circle the spot
b) that pedophile/stalker we chased off once
c) the avenue that probably wanted to throw down once, and scared us enough that we hadn't been back for about a year.
Side notes: There is also a jungle gym (kinda new) for the kids, a bridge that leads over to the doggie park & it's conveniently located right off the 110 (?) freeway. -

Love this place! And my dogs love it too... and I'm very careful to always have them on leashes, because I've heard cops give tickets to those who let their dogs go off leashes. I decided to make a quick video of our last walk, here it is: http://www.youtube.com...

I love it here=] great place to walk/run with your pup.
WARNING : sometimes cops wait around on the trail to give out tickets to people who have their dogs off leash. I've seen them a few times so be careful! The tickets are pricey. -

Came to the area and could not for the life of me find the jogging/walking trail. I saw the park, golf course, baseball batting cages, but did not see any people walking. So I rate this place lower for bad signage.
I did pass by a sign for the roving archers, I'll check them out next time.
The area is nice though, if you find the walking area I would suggest hanging around here and walking a short distance to the main street where there are a few restaurants, cafes, and bakeries you'll enjoy the serenity of this area. -

Review for the Lower Arroyo (trail that goes under the Colorado Bridge):
My dog and I took a walk along the water trail, free from any rogue archers or large canines. It is quiet, modest and beautiful--lost in paradise. Since the place seemed private enough, I let my dog wander off leash.
Here's how he enjoyed his walk:
- smelling the damp and acrid grass beside the trail
- rolling in the leafy riches beneath the trees
- walking on the cobbled wall to an upper trail
- getting lost in a massive attack of tall and dense shrubbery
... because his walking partner thought it was a trail... (my bad)
- needing to climb up what appeared to be his first V0 to get back on track
- "enjoying" the view beneath the bridges -

Entrance is located at S. Arroyo blvd and Norwood dr.
After the steep drive down, there is an archery range straight ahead. If you turn left you will see the bridge. If you head in this direction (rose bowl) it will lead you to the rose bowl.
Not sure where the stream comes from, but it is a bit dirty with trash bags floating around.
Overall, nice, quiet place for a walk. Lots of dogs walkers.Listed in: The Places I Go Out

This place just driving through the streets in pasedena going to the Rose Bowl, had my jaw dropping on just the majestic height of the Colorado Bridge, as well as the beautiful trails and archery available here. It was just as amazing when walking underneath it with the strategic archtecture, and grandeure.
I walked down to lower Arroyo and just started to walk and explore the beauty in such serene atmosphere. There were some very friendly archers, and fitness fanatics (I would not walk alone here at dusk or any time after dark it would be dangerous) .
There were horse back riding and lots of dogs around and the foot bridges that let you cross over the wash, with the permeating smell of the sewer- you cando the easy walk along the fence of the wash or through the wooded areas, there are fallen trees, as well as ducks, and a few surprising bungalows hidden in the trees that overlook the place. It was a very nice day or ending to a good day.
I will be back -

This is a cool, off the beaten path park to take pictures at.
I hadn't known about this place until I accidentally stumbled across it on a training run.
It's relatively secluded, mostly verdant (I say mostly, because it has hiking and archery areas which don't have much foliage) and just a great way to spend a quiet morning, evening or afternoon. -

Why trot around in mindless paved circles with the masses going round and round the Rose Bowl when you've got this? Hands down, one of my favorite places in the city to run.
The trails extend south (from near the Aquatic Center) towards South Pasadena and Highland Park along the Arroyo passing through some woodsy areas, along a creek, by the beautiful old homes on San Rafael above, past the stables and the golf course all the way to the second set of stables in HP, making for a perfect 8 mile round trip run on soft dirt (e.g. old knee friendly) trail. Take a camera if you want to catch some amazing views of the Colorado (suicide) bridge from the unique vantage point of being underneath it.
Alternately, you can head north for a more challenging trek past the golf course up towards the old baseball diamond and JPL and further still up into Angeles Crest for a run (my favorite) that will give you enough elevation not only for a good workout but some amazing views. If you have a few hours for a leisurely jog it doesn't get much better than this. A couple of miles in and Toto, you'll know you're not in Kansas anymore. There's the old Elmer's bridge (recently, finally, getting a little facelift after being washed out in last year's rains) and plenty of lush greenery and wildlife to spy. Iif you're lucky enough to come up here after a few weeks of rain there are gorgeous spots to enjoy the swollen creeks running and the run off below turns some of the areas into dog friendly ponds.
So what are you waiting for? Get off your ass, step away from the computer, and go! -

My wife, son, and dogs love this place.
Dog owners--we should organize ourselves and try to get the off-leash restrictions in the Arroyo amended. The stringent enforcement is driving out responsible, otherwise law-abiding people who make up a vast roving patrol that makes the Arroyo a safe place for everyone. Surely the Pasadena Police Department would want to free up its very limited resources to fight crime. But just as surely, we must propose measures--such as a special off-leash license that could only be obtained with a fee and by having the dog pass an obedience test (to ensure that the dog isn't aggressive and that the owner can control the dog)--that will be palatable to the City.
Any owners who want to fight City Hall (admittedly, not an enticing offer), please respond to this post, and i will try to assemble a group of us. -

I've been charged by growling dogs and nearly attacked 3 times. Bitten at once. I was incredulous that the owner was upset at me for taking a defensive position and getting angry. I've seen unleashed dogs attack leashed dogs and horses as well. Not to mention the bags of dog refuse tied to the fence. I've called the humane society but they haven't come by. I know a lot of people who don't go down there anymore due to the dogs.
When I confront these people about that they'll get a ticket for their off-leash dog, they reply "Oh, I thought they checked in the morning." They know they're doing wrong and are completely non-chalant about it.
Don't go there anymore... -
Review from Mitch W.
I play tennis here. There are two sets of courts. There are about 10 upper courts (all lighted) and 6 lower courts (2 lighted) at the park. I normally play on Thursday nights and weekends with friends who are regulars at the park. They have been coming here for years and years. The courts are fairly nice for being public courts, but can get dusty, dirty with lots of leaves because they are public courts. There aren't any wind screens on the courts, so it's more challenging to see the ball. However, they are free, so how much can you really complain. The courts are fairly slow, so be prepared to run a lot.
Cheers! -

gorgeous city bliss..
I am a born and bred Los Angeles Native,3rd generation and just recently stumbled across this gorgeous park. The only reason I found it was because I drove the streets from Pasadena to Lincoln Heights and just kinda cruised. When I actually had time to come back and visit the place, I was amazed by it's secret hidden treasures...all I can say is GO!...i dont wanna spoil the fun.. -

Beautiful park with a wonderful archery range and really friendly archers. Mostly traditional archers and lots of longbows. Love it. I would have given them 5 stars if they had more variety in the topography of their walk through course.

Awesome location for hiking and sightseeing. The trail is flat so there aren't many inclines. This is great if you're looking for something easy. Perfect for children and horseback riding. There's also free Archery lessons every Saturday.

Thanks to Foster K. for the first review of this place. It brought back so many memories!. This is a great little hidden park that is in between East LA, the 110, and South Pas. It's so amazing that it's right off the 110 because it is a perfectly quiet little haven... and one would never suspect it is tucked away right in the middle of a barrio and upscale So Pas.
The park is lush with trees and there are tons of soccer moms and dads back-seat coaching their adorable little kids (I don't even like kids that much...but watching little kids run the wrong way on a soccer field warms my heart every time!) as they scramble around like maniacs on the field...akin to chemotaxis if you really think about it. There are also horseback riding trails and if you follow the main trail up north, it will lead all the way up to the Rose Bowl. I will say, however, that I prefer to exit the park on the north side and just run up Arroyo Blvd...it's much more scenic with brilliant modern architectural wonders as well as more run-of-the-mill (yet beautiful) houses, shade, and cute old people who wave to you or have their easels set up and are painting the gorgeous views. The horse trail is much more dusty and there's lots of horse poop that you have to watch out for.
Either way, this park is a little treasure in the vast urban landscape known as Los Angeles.Listed in: The Obscure or the Underrated…, The Great Outdoors.

Nice, relatively quiet getaway spot....the Arroyo park stretches from the public Arroyo Seco Golf Course, some soccer fields and a horse stables (which make up the Lower Park) all the way up to the drainage area in front of JPL. The trails wind through the canyon on both sides of the drainage canal all the way to the Aquatic Center, the Rose Bowl, the Brookside Golf Course, under the 210 and into the dry lake area. This network of parks is great for all kinds of activites, including hiking, horseback riding, drinking, soccer, baseball, archery, practicing fly fishing, making out, jogging, swimming, all kinds of games, football, doing drugs of all kinds, tennis and so on. Some part of the park has the facilities to accommodate almost every kind of physical activity...there's fields, playgrounds, game courts...all kinds of fun activities of varying legality can be had here. A blast.

Calling all runners. If in nela, probably the best, most scenic running route nearby. As a former west-sider I got spoiled with long runs in Venice and Santa Monica. As a former Hollywood resident I got spoiled with Griffith Park and Runyon. Moved eastside and loved many things about it but lamented no good place for long runs. I'm embarassed it took me almost two years to find this route but it was yelp help that did it. You can easily get double digits (if looping) and it's mostly flat and dare I say it often times bucolic. Yes there is the occasional horse (and corresponding horse bidness) that you will need to contend with but it's worth it.

You can't beat the Lower Arroyo for (almost) pristine nature, right in the middle of an urban area. I've seen tons of birds here, and if it wasn't for the concrete culvert and the bridges, I'd think I was in the Angeles Forest. A great option for a quick morning walk or jog (no bikes!), or even an after-work outing.

Great place to find pick-up soccer games (with lights on) without being harrased. That, and the surroundings are great!
