Review from Angie C.
Not only does this place have great reviews, it was recommended both by the ER vet that saved my cat's life earlier this month, and a good friend of mine who takes her small dog to this vet. When my friend said this vet once said "you don't have to bring your dog in for every little thing", I knew it was a winner. They sincerely want your pet to be well, and don't want to overcharge.
I don't have much in the way of records for my cat, but the vet was willing to work with me on managing his condition at home. I email his daily test results to her at the office and get feedback/suggestions. And I was able to get a refill of his medication right at the office before I left. A check-up and 4 months' worth of medication for less than $200? I'm a fan. I think we found our regular vet. -

If you love your pet and you are looking for a trustworthy vet who will not try to convince you to get any unnecessary tests done then THIS IS YOUR PLACE!
My shiba is 7 years old and trust me I have been through many vets and I would do anything for my dog if necessary and rather save money on other things than on my dog. But if I get the feeling a vet is trying to do things on my dog by using scare tactics I am out (see my review on Calaveras Veterinary).
Today my dog got a teeth cleaning. Dr. Paul called me before the procedure and right after the procedure to let me know how she did. WOW what a great customer service!!!! He explained to me everything in detail and in a way anybody can understand. He used analogies that made it very easy to understand the whole procedure.
And trust me they didn't even recommend a teeth cleaning as out of their perspective she is okay but I just wanted it to get it done before he teeth might start chipping.
We are moving to East Bay soon but I am willing to drive the distance and keep our vet. That's for sure!!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Absolutely fantastic. My cat was not feeling well at all, so I called them up- very late, very last minute, and without ever having been a patient before. They stayed open late to take in my cat, who ended up having a very very high fever and other issues, and were upfront about the pricing the whole time. My own doctor doesn't explain the tests or their meaning as well as they did here.
They weren't just super friendly, they were amazingly competent. I'd be happy to deal with a complete jerk if he was the best person to treat my pets, but it's refreshing having a better option. -

Dr. Michelle is the best! She really truly cares about the health of your pet and does everything in her power to make sure of it. Finding a good pet clinic is like choosing the right dentist or hair stylist... You have to keep trying them all out until you find one that you can say, "Ya, this is definitely worthy of my money." It cost $65 to get your pet checked out, which some may say is a little pricy, which I do agree. However, you get what you pay for, so that $65 I'm willing to cough up for great service!

Thanks Yelpers for helping me find this vet. Was able to snag a last minute appointment (which I didn't think would be possible with all these great reviews) and took my Aussie Cattle Dog in to get her annual exam/vaccinations.
Everyone from the receptionist, vet, and vet techs were super patient, calm, and helpful and you could just tell they really love animals. My dog was completely at ease which I've never ever seen before when taking her to the vet!!
Dr. Nakagawa was super informative and thorough. The icing on the cake was that the prices were super reasonable (especially for everything being as great as it was). A years supply of her heartworm medicine was even cheaper than the cheapest I've found it for online. -
Review from Annie D.
Last minute call and they were able to squeeze my dog in to get him checked out.
They were helpful with his needs and able to answer most questions. Turns out nothing was wrong with my dog and just to keep an eye out in case it happens again. Got some ear cleaning tips since his ears are way over sized.
Came out with the vet bill under $100 bucks... the ear cleaner cost more then the visit, so I was happy I wasn't over charged just to bring him in to ask a few questions and get him checked out. Makes me and everyone else feel like they can get their dog checked without worrying about getting robbed. Nice. -

Yes, you get good service, but comes with a stiff bill (expensive).
Went there with my golden, had a lump almost as big as half of a ping pong ball on the leg, vet didn't even touch or look at it closely. He spent 10 minutes explaining what it was, basically a big zit, and nothing needed to be done. Damage: close to $80.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Dr Paul and his staff have helped us with our pets during good times and bad for 25 years. Whatever the challenge he has always had experience with it and can offer options and good service. He has an amazing way of checking out a pets condition while not letting them know he is looking.
You will not have any regrets about using this vet. -

Thank you Dr. Michelle. I took my 2 yr old Atopic Cavalier King Charles there yesterday and she was so understanding and informative. I just recently moved to the area and finding a vet that I can trust is a MUST!! She made that possible with her kind personality. The staff is great too!! Thank you all of you.

Review from Cindy F.
I have been bringing my dog and cat here for the past few years and also recently started bringing my new puppy as well. I just know they are in good hands with Dr. Paul. He is always kind and gentle with my animals and always takes care to thoroughly answer all my questions and concerns. I never feel rushed. I also like his conservative approach to vaccinations, giving my tiny chihuahua half the dosage for rabies, and offered good advice on options for heart worm and flea control. I ended up switching from Frontline Plus to Revolution that covers both.
The vet techs are also very gentle with the vaccinations, much better than the techs at the VIP clinics at random pet stores. Although pricier, Dr. Paul doesn't push for vaccinations every single year like VIP does. Keeping in mind, VIP's main way of making money is selling you vaccinations your baby might not necessarily need every single year. If you think about it, even humans don't require shots every single year right?
Dr. Paul really is a great veterinarian, and his schedule is usually pretty booked up in advance. So be sure to call ahead (think 1 1/2 - 2 weeks), but absolutely worth the wait. -

I adopted a puppy from a shelter and I was determined to find the best vet in my area for him. I found Arroyo Animal Clinic by using Yelp. They had so many excellent reviews that I felt I needed to give them a try.
Boy, was I impressed. From beginning to end, the staff and doctors were the best I've ever seen. I am so glad I found this place. I have had nothing but excellent service and care for my pup.
I can recommend these people without hesitation. Superior in every way. -

Took my cats here for a check up, when I called for an appt...it wasn't too easy to schedule, they are pretty busy because they are pretty popular (probably in part from yelp) anyway when i asked about if i could bring them in if there was an emergency( one time my cat somehow ate tool off a dress and was puking so i figured that would be a good example) but they told me "only if you are a regular customer" so...that's kinda like, wth. If its an emergency its kinda like, you would think they would take any animal if they want to help animals because they are a clinic.
I did take them there eventually after I had an appt weeks in advance, so i would not recommend wasting time calling if you never have been with them before and need immediate assistance. The tech did not have any more plastic coverings for the thermometer so he couldn't take their temperature. I thought that was odd, like why not just go find one rather than skip it...isn't that part of the whole exam?
Dr. Paul is nice though, very thorough and even called me back to answer some other concerns I had and gave me some good advice, so I appreciated that. Dr. Paul is really good though and I would give 5 stars but the other things that happened I can only give 4 for now. -

Dr. Paul and his staff are very caring. He takes as much time as you need to understand what is going on with your pet. He has treated my exotic cat and helped save him when other Vets said there was no way to help him.

I started going to Dr. Paul because I have a very old mastiff with special needs. He has an auto immune disease and needs special eye care etc. I have a friend who had used Dr. Paul for his older large breed dog and originally referred me.
The team at Arroyo has always been very gentle and caring with my pets.
Their fees are pretty standard for this area and most importantly I trust them with my pets.
I would refer them to any friends or family. And PS I love the pic here- know both of these vet techs and they are super cool. -

We've been taking our old lady cat for a few years now and each experience has been wonderful! Dr. Michelle and all the vet techs are so great with Tilly. She's a very large & fluffy Maine Coon, and we come here for yearly check-ups, nail trims & rear window shaving. At her last check up, Dr. Michelle suggested Tilly have her canines extracted (oh noes!) since they weren't looking too great...She explained the procedures to us very clearly, laid out all the pricing before hand and handed us a sheet of instructions. Tilly's appointment is coming up soon and I know she'll be in good hands!

I called this clinic (previously been here) to fill a prescription for my dog, because he could not walk. The receptionist said she would call back once it was ready. She never called back. I called to see why she did not, she said, "well I assumed the pharmacy would call you (they did not; filled somewhere else)." An argument followed, and this receptionist said dumb statement after dumb statement, instead of admitting her huge mistake. At least it wasn't anything serious, like.... oh..... my dog wasn't able to walk. Oh, and I forgot to mention they have a great location immediately in front of a motel and trailer park.

Quick Summary:
Dr. Paul and Dr. Michelle: 5 stars each
Level of care and patience: 5 stars
Willingness to answer questions/provide information: 5 stars
Follow-through: 5 stars
Knowledgeableness: 5 stars
Everything else: doesn't matter to me.
--- The Long Version ---
Dr. Paul and Dr. Michelle are kind to my pets. They genuinely care about how my animals are doing and ask about the others left at home when I only bring in one. They, and all the techs and people who run this clinic, are gentle, patient, and friendly to my pets. Even the pets who don't return the kindness :)
When one of my cats was diagnosed with diabetes, both doctors were supportive and responsive. I had a lot of questions, wanted a run down of all options and what to do when my cat summarily rejected each (a favored pastime). When I leave a message, I don't worry if they'll respond. It's been over 2 years since diagnosis and my cat is on insulin but still chasing toys down the hall.
If they don't have an answer, they say so. I appreciate an 'I don't know, I haven't seen this before. Let me speak with a few specialists, do some digging, and call you back.' That is far better than 'We haven't seen this, but we're fairly sure...,' without ever giving a solid supporting reason for the certainty.
Some doctors, human and pet, hold an annoying double-standard of 'patients always think they know something because they read it online' and 'hasn't my patient researched this at all? If it's so important you'd think the patient would have bothered.' The doctors at Arroyo are consistently helpful - they'll caution against less reputable info, act as the resource for fact finding, and will explain why something I read does or does not make sense - while completing the cat's physical exam.
My cats have offered more than their share of medical problems, and I have never felt they didn't receive adequate care or attention. The only reason I didn't rate this vet sooner is that I thought I had. While looking for reviews on emergency vets yesterday, I realized my mistake.
As I type this one of my cats may be bleeding internally (from his kidney) and I'm awaiting another barrage of tests tomorrow before possible surgery. This problem arose over the weekend, and I have been visiting the emergency hospital since vets are closed. The doctors at Arroyo actually responded to the frazzled messages I left on Saturday and guided me in getting the right emergency care given the limited info I left them. My cat may not survive the next few days; it may be helpful for readers to know that this review isn't written in the happy glow of good news as some reviews can be. -

Wow! I'm BEYOND impressed. I took my 7 year old Pit-mix, Mason here for a standard check-up for his teeth b/c they looked inflamed. I called & made an appt.(even the receptionists are friendly!) and they scheduled me for the next day. I was greeted and admitted right away. The nurse Johnathan was very friendly and Mason loved him. He gave him many treats! He took his temp. and Dr. Megan Nakagawa was in shortly after. She was so sweet and took time to answer all my questions. She was extremely patient and knowledgable. She was not trying to sell me products or services which I really appreciated. Even though I initially went in for a cleaning service, she suggested I just brush his teeth as often as possible. Such honest and sincere tips that are hard to come by these days! I got a full printed report card on Mason's health and that was very helpful. Overall, I highly recommend this clinic for it's cleanliness, affordability and accommodations!!!

Had to switch to this vet because I moved and this one got the best rating around the 10 mile radius of where I now live.
They are nice and all but...
1) While I was waiting for the vet in the room, I couldn't find any paper towel.
2) The vet came in without stethoscope.
3) I asked the vet a questions and her response was: "That's interesting. I have no clue!!"
But to their credit, my dog did diarrhea in front of their office and the guy cleaning the area was SUPER nice. Got me some things to clean the dog off and he was all "no worries!!" "it happens." when I apologized about it. -

Dr. Paul is really wonderful.
After the death of our last cat, we adopted two kittens and didn't know who to use as a vet (bad luck to go to the last vet who didn't catch our cat's heart problem).
I was impressed by how many people recommended Dr. Paul (and what good reviews he got on yelp), so we tried him out. Wow! He has a great way of explaining things to you in plain English, he's great with the cats/very patient, and he spends a lot of time with you.
I had the opposite experience of the reviewer who said they couldn't fit them in. When our guy had to go to the emergency vet (it was 6am) and then suggested we see our regular vet afterward, he made lots of time for us on a moment's notice. And he was very calming and helped us not to worry (Everything was OK!). -

Dr. Paul is tops on my list. It's been difficult to find a good vet in the area. In fact, I have been vet "shopping" since my glorious return to the Bay Area and Arroyo just might be the final stop (4 stars for now as I've only been there a handful of times...but I feel a five star upgrade coming on).
Although I've heard good things about him and his practice for several years, I only ever visited for the first time a few months ago as my darling dog, Neil Diamond was having some "lady problems." During our initial visit, he commented on what a good looking dog Diamond was, which although obvious, in addition to being true, ;) is always nice to hear. He handled her with care and consideration and never once rushed us.
Now, I am admittedly a bit of a nervous owner (note that I've been to 7 different vet offices in the last 3 years - for different pets/reasons, mind you) but he listened to all my questions and gave accessible answers. After a slew of tests to rule out other possibilities, Diamond was sent home with tiny and inexpensive pills that have cleared everything up. Ah, better living through chemistry!
Although before I never imagined starting my year + old dog on hormone replacement therapy, it has been going swimmingly and I have Doctor Paul to thank. -

I am extremely pleased with Arroyo Animal Clinic and its staff. My cats absolutely hate going to the vet (as most cats do), but they seemed more at ease here than they've been at other vets. Dr. Paul and the vet techs did a great job of handling the cats during the exam. They were also very thorough. One of my little furbabies tends to be extremely squirmy especially regarding his teeth but Dr. Paul was able to show me exactly what was going on. He was extremely patient and took the time to answer all of our questions.
They also send a report card with details on what he found and what we discussed. -

I recently took my cat chilli to get his first shots and today to also get him neutered. The staff are all very nice. They gave him some food to calm him down while they gave him his shots. He is normally a really relaxed kitten so he did not put much of a fight especially with food in front of his face. I am a little nervous about his neutering but I am confident that they will do a great job. I am so glad I found a great vet, even though I am moving to south San Jose I will still be coming here for their great friendly service!

After going to several other veterinary/animal clinics and hospitals (including a horrible experience with Dr. Campbell at Silicon Valley Pet Clinic), I am so thankful to have found Arroyo Animal Clinic. My pup has seen both Dr. Paul and Dr. Michelle and they have both been fantastic. At the appointments they always make sure to address any concerns I may have and are so informative about anything and everything regarding your pet. On top of that, they are two of the kindest and friendliest people you'll ever meet! This friendliness extends to their staff as well, especially the vet tech, John.
The first time I took my pup here, they took a photo of her, and with each subsequent visit, the photo appears on these "report cards" they give you at the end of the appointment with a summary of what your pet came in for and the results, if any. Everything is done right here. The facilities are clean, the staff friendly, and my dog leaves happy, even after being poked and prodded!
Your pet is in good hands at Arroyo Animal Clinic. Highly highly recommended! -

I wasn't going to write a review for this place because after too many years and way, WAY too many bad vets, I finally found one that I can't find a da*n thing wrong with - and I kinda wanted to keep them all to myself.
But I can't.
Dr. Michelle is about as close to the bestest perfectest vet I have found -
I am the first to admit I can be an, ahem, "difficult" client when it comes to my animals, but that is because I am educated and they are THE most important thing in my life. And I'm not one to just accept without question "whatever the doctor says" while handing over piles of money. And i kinda don't have a filter sometimes . . .
Dr. Michelle answers all my questions without making me feel like I am "bothering" her, doesn't make me feel like I am being rushed out of there, follows up on all issues, and treats both me and my animals with care, dignity, and respect.
Another great thing about this place is their techs. One of my dogs is about as hard to handle as I am, only worse because he can't talk to verbally express himself, and is a little on the, shall we say, 'excitable' side. Two other vets who saw him flat out refused to xray him without sedation - the techs at Arroyo were not only able to get the xray WITHOUT the sedation, but they returned with all their limbs and digits intact, and my dog's tail a waggin like he'd just had the best experience ever.
The place is clean, the office staff is helpful, the techs rock, and as long as Dr. Michelle will put up with me, I will never need to even deal with finding another doctor to care for my animals like they deserve to be cared for.
To steal from another poster, J.B.:
Dr. Paul and Dr. Michelle: 5 stars each
Level of care and patience: 5 stars
Willingness to answer questions/provide information: 5 stars

i love love LOVE Dr.G!
Don't let the small building fool you this place is awesome! The prices are VERY reasonable and they also give discounts to new clients as well as if you refer someone else to the clinic you get a discount on your next visit.
The techs did a good job just getting the basics on my dog. She wasn't exactly the easiest to handle for a rectal temp, but apparently they do also have the ear thermometer which had just happened to be out of commission.
Dr.G was great, looking over my dog nose to tail she was very thorough. My dog was only there for an annual exam so nothing too big since she's still young (5yrs) and had no health issues prior.
The print outs with the invoice and "report cards" were great. It was nice to see item by item how things looked on my dog, nose, ears, teeth, etc. I also like that they take a photo of your pet which is on your invoices and report cards.
Working at a clinic in Mountain View it was nice to see the difference in another clinic. Not only in prices but also the mannerisms of the employees. Everyone was very helpful and cheerful throughout the whole duration of my time spent there. The prices were also much much better. Comparing just one vaccine at my own clinic I was paying about half the price. Not too shabby in my book.
Very happy and fun visit for both me AND my dog. -

A year and half ago, we decided to get a french bulldog puppy. Because of the inherent issues associated with bulldogs, my husband wants to find a vet who are experienced with flat faced dogs. Through yelping, he found Arroyo.
Arroyo is a very far drive from where we live, usually takes 30 minutes on El Camino during traffic hours. But the drive is so worth it, because the staff and Dr. Michelle and Dr. Paul at Arroyo are truly great!
Dr. Paul and Dr. Michelle always go into great length to address any of our concerns and to give very clear instructions. Before the puppy were sprayed, we were so concerned about the medical risk involved with the procedure, Dr. Paul actually called us and answered our questions, and emailed us articles to address our concern.
This place, even at its busiest time, still looks very calm, which is a big bonus for us!
Come here, you won't regreat it! Your pet is in great hands at Arroyo. -

I went here for the first time about a month ago to get my cat's annual exam. She is normally terrified of vets. We had taken her to the same clinic in Houston since she was a kitten. They weren't exactly the most gentle, but we had a good relationship with the doctor.
So, after we moved, I was recommended this vet by our pet sitter. Dr. Paul and the staff (I don't remember any of their names) were amazing! They totally understood how scared she was and allowed her to stay in the scale for the entire exam. Dr. Paul was so comforting. He also took the time to explain a lot of recent research being done on animal care. I can't say that she'll ever enjoy going, but I think it was a lot less stressful on her. She didn't even complain (or have to be held down) when she got her shot, which is a first! We'll be bringing our other cat when it's time for her annual.
As a side note, we have chinchillas, and when I asked Dr. Paul if he saw them, he gave me a recommendation for a vet in Palo Alto that is more specialized in small animals. I really appreciated this! -

Dr. Umeda is fantastic! He treated my rats well, knew so much about them, and took great care of them during a surgery. He did such a fantastic job, there were no infections, and no problems afterwards (something I've dealt with from other vets).
The price was reasonably too-most vets jack up costs for "exotics."
I can't say enough good thigns about the clinic in general, and Dr. Umeda especially.
I just wish I lived close enough to use him as a regular vet! -

Arroyo Animal Clinic is terrific!
Unlike other pet places where the people can be rough with animals or have a disdain for them, you know that everyone at Arroyo truly loves animals and it really comes through. Everyone from the nurses to the front desk to Dr. Paul are absolutely lovely. They are really patience with your pet (mine is a bit nervous so the gentle coarsening is really appreciated) and Dr Paul always try to address all of your concerns. I have also boarded my dog here for years and its always been a pleasant experience :)
With such a loving and pet friendly staff, what makes it even better is that their prices are totally reasonable!! I highly recommend this place for everyone!! -

I highly recommend this clinic. Both doctors, Dr. Paul and Dr. Michelle, get an A+ for service, expertise and compassion. The techs and office staff are just terrific (Michelle, Jenny, John and the other ladies whose names I failed to get -- we love you guys!).
My cat needed an FHO after breaking his hip, and Arroyo took wonderful care of him. I took him to Arroyo first to get him checked out, then took him to another clinic to get a second opinion. The low end of the estimate given by the 2nd clinic was a solid $1000 over what Arroyo quoted me. -

I am extremely happy with our choice of veterinary care for Tuco. Dr. Michelle and her staff were really nice and took great care to answer our questions during Tuco's first appointment.
Since then we called the clinic with some questions and they responded right away. Our baby also got hurt a little bit over the weekend, and we followed Dr. Michelle's suggestion and emailed the clinic before taking him to emergency care. Dr. Paul Umeda responded to us very quickly with what to do and what to watch out for to take care of Tuco over the weekend without needed to go to ER.
I am so grateful to this clinic, and to other Yelpers for helping me find truly excellent care for our "first child." -

I am paying it forward as I found this Vet Office Via Yelp Reviews back in May 09.
Honestly I can't express how nice it is to find a affordable friendly Vet Practice that sincerly cares about the animals. I first sought out a vet for two kittens I was fostering. We got an appointment with Dr. Michelle she was so kind and even recommended we get the medicine we needed for the kittens from a human pharmacy to help cut costs. After that we started bringing our family cat to see Dr. Michelle. The whole staff is great!
Our Cat "Gilbert" suddenly became very ill and went blind. Dr Michelle was very understanding and gave us recommendations eventhough we weren't able to determine what was wrong. While waiting to see the Cat Eye Dr our cat suddenly took turn for the worse with Seizures and he passed away on labor day. We didn't end up going back to Dr. Michelle but our Neighbor had a HORRIBLE experience with VCA santa clara so we recommended Dr. Michelle to her when she was asked how she heard about the clinic our family was mentioned Dr Michelle asked about our cat. A week or so later we received a touching card about how special our cat was and how sorry she was to hear he had passed.
We have since recently adopted another rescue cat whom we have been taking to Dr. Michelle. We were surprised to find out the first pet visit for animals adopted are free. For the service I receive each and every time I go and the care my animals get I will pay whatever they want !

Dr. Paul Umeda is an excellent vet. My mom started seeing him almost 10 years ago, because no one could figure out what was wrong with her cat, Dr. Paul took the time to figure out what Pickle's condition was and to treat it.
I have been seeing Dr. Paul for three years for my two dogs, he is great with my dog who doesn't like tall men, and when my new puppy accidentally ate some gum he called me back and talked me through the mechanics.
If you need an excellent, caring vet, Dr. Paul is the one and only to go to. -

Sunnyvale, CA
Dr Paul and all the front office people are amazing. George is a very friendly dog, but he gets skittish around people trying to touch him. The vet at the roaming shot clinics for low cost vaccinations traumatized him a bit (I guess it traumatized me as well seeing my dog in pain, and will never go to those again!). Dr Paul comes in and almost gives the dog more attention to the humans, as it SHOULD be, because the dog is his patient. George knows he can give Dr. Paul a big hug and lots of wet kisses, and Dr. Paul will take that opportunity to analyze George's health with slow careful gentle touches and plenty of tasty treats. He also spends plenty of time talking to us about our worries and concerns giving us advice about taking care of our no-longer a puppy pup. At the end of the visit they give you a written report of what is going on with your pet, and an overall health report. It's very useful and helpful to keep track. It is expensive, but it's worth it. Why would I skimp on my dog's health and well being especially after seeing first hand the lack of treatment with the lost cost vaccination drop in clinic?
Oh, and I almost forgot the best bit. Dr. Paul responds to email so for times when you aren't sure whether you need to bring your dog in he will give you the advice about emergencies.
ETA:
I still give Dr. Paul a 5 star rating. We recently took George to the vet and he saw someone else (I'm not sure of her name). This lady vet was not very comfortable with George and pushed him away (which just makes George more eager to please). We were taking George in because he's had a problem with his ears and we definitely got educated about what could be happening and good treatment plan. It was just sad because I don't think George appreciated the experience as much. With Dr. Paul he definitely gets super friendly and feels like he's had a treat in spending time with him. Dr. Paul does a great body checkup normally while getting slobbered on, and also provides a report card about George.
