Oh, Around the Clock. When nothing else is open, you are always there...
I wouldn't go out of my way for the food, but it is solid and cheap. The brunch special is reasonably priced and includes an entree, a caffeine boost, and something boozy to start your day off right. I always get the eggs florentine because they are a weakness of mine. They are always good, not the best, but the hollandaise is always passable.
The BLTs are also good. Sandwiches come with veggies instead of fries, which I love and my boyfriend hates.
I hope it isn't closed forever!
This was actually the first place I ate at after coming to NYU. It was my orientation, and like a typical asshole freshman with no concept of what a budget was, I bought a steak. You know what, it was actually pretty good too! Everything here was pretty cheap (including pitchers) and the food was pretty good too, and I used it as a solid go-to place when I had no better ideas or it was very late. I remember I went to it a few months earlier for just this reason, and it was all boarded up. This may not have been some great fine dining establishment or a cheap, hidden gem place, but it was like old reliable. I'm gonna miss it all the same.
When I'm in the East Village, this is my Diner.
When I walk in, you see the Tin Men sitting on the last booth on the left. They call me over, wonder how I'm still making bets when I'm absolutely broke, working at a hair salon.
Our booth is always the last one on the right. Last time I came in, my friends were having a serious debate about a serious subject: who's better - Sinatra or Mathis?
When I eat, i always get a cheeseburger with french fries, with a side of gravy. Come on, you can't NOT go to a diner and get fries with gravy? Not getting it should be almost against the law.
More to come later. Right now we have a bet as to whether Carol Heathrow can go for my, ahem, while on our first date. She is "Death", which is a very good thing. Details to follow!
I figure I should get this review in, as Around The Clock is on the verge of closing. Sad times my friends. But it really was in the cards. Around The Clock has a great location, but it was just too cheap for where it was.
Of course, this means that I took great advantage of it on several occasions. I've had a lot of black bean nachos there. And Collonades. I'll miss being able to get dinner on the cheap.
But it's a new East Village that will charge new higher prices and drive out all the old-school places. I wish that ATC were relocating to a neighborhood that could use a decent late-night dining establishment, but perhaps another will rise in its ashes.
The very first time I came here I was barely 18 and had just left Avalon at 6am. My friends and I stumbled into a cab and asked the driver to take us somewhere, anywhere with food. Maybe he was taking advantage of the stupid, drunk Jersey girls when he decided to drive from 21st st and 6th ave to 9th st and 3rd ave just for a 24 hour diner. Or maybe he knew: There was something special about this place.
Gone are the days of willingly going clubbing in Flatiron and getting excited about it.
Gone are the days of meeting my friend from Cooper Union here for lunch.
Gone are the days of paying an exorbitant amount of rent to live in the East Village and coming here three nights in a row because I couldn't afford anything else.
If nothing else, you were reliable and familiar.
You will be missed.
The East Village lost a good diner with the closing of Around the Clock. I feel sorry for future broke, drunk, college students that they will no longer have ATC to stumble into late at night when they have to sober up before getting past the dorm security guards. I've had a range of service there, from great to completely miserable, and being yelled at by the little ray of sunshine late-night manager for refilling our own water; when our waiter's water refill game was terribly sub-par.
The food wasn't anything to write home about, but the wings, nachos, and french toast were great deals that I shuffled between. Somebody below mentioned Cozy's on Broadway , but it's way more expensive and would never play A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight Marauder's," after midnight.
I'm gonna go pour out a 40 of O.E., another relic of freshman year, for Around the Clock.
AROUND THE CLOCK WE LAMENT YOUR DEPARTURE....but wait...
According to Reuters, aka a barkeep at ATC, Around the Clock is just closed temporarily. Some renovations are taking place, which actually are sorely needed, and then this treasure will return.
Along a great and very visible spot along 3rd Ave this place manages to never be overcrowded..I hesitate to Yelp here..
Going in the evening can net you a chicken sando or a BLT for around 5-6 bucks...yes you read correct. Not the finest of delicacies but certainly can break a hunger strike. They also have some cheaper drinks and surprisingly pretty decent sangria.
It not never seemed like the cleanest place in the world, we'll see after the renovations, but they're open late and unlike many places their kitchen actually stays open too.
I'm kind of surprised this place closed. It always seemed full and while I never actually had the food (I had only drank here), the fried rice looked awesome. Oh well, hopefully another 24 hour place will open up.
I'm pretty sure some jerk-off that works here stole my friend's phone. When he went in looking for it, the staff looked at him like he'd never been in there.
Booooooooooooo. Lamers.
I walked by recently and realized that this place was closed! I come here when everything closes at St. Mark's when it's really late, but now where will I go? There's nothing better than having diner food in the wee hours of the morning. Also it's pretty cheap food too...can't believed that it closed...
I'm struggling to give this place one star. I wish Yelp had the option of giving half stars. This place is pure hell. The staff took our friend's birthday cake, making it seem as though they would let us actually eat it there later on. No dice. Instead this angry manager comes out after our meal and tells us we can't have the cake there. Thanks.
Food was bland. The calamari was some of the worst I have ever had. They didn't know how to make a bahama mama. The list goes on and on. Never going back here, ever.
I stumbled into Around the Clock late one afternoon, in need of a stiff drink (or drinks) after a rough day.
Lucky for me, they have great happy hour specials... $3 pints and well drinks, with Stella on tap.
My friend got some quesadillas, which were pretty basic and good, but who makes a bad quesadilla anyway?
Bar service was great, quick and friendly without being too pushy.
I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.. but you need food/drinks/a place to hang out and you're in the neighborhood at any hour of the day, it's a pretty safe bet.
This place really takes 'good cheap eats' to the max. I came here last night with two friends and our entire bill was 22 bucks!
I ordered the Turkey Club which was alright. There was an overall component missing which I just can't put my finger on..hm.
Boyfriend ordered the Country Combo (Waffle, 2 eggs over easy and canadian bacon). Me, being into really odd concotions, put an egg ontop of one of the waffle slices and gorged. Took the meaning of delicious to new heights.
The menu is pretty edgy for a diner. You can get everything from sandwiches to breakfast to pasta to mexican. Oh, how I love variety.
Our waitress was super cool. She gave me a huge plate of pickles when I only asked for one extra and she was hilarious.
Why in the world would this be a default place on Saturday nights at 3:00am? Hmm.. maybe because you just want to have a neutral place to sit down and order some early breakfast with a party of 10.. no hassle...
Maybe because you simply want a chicken piccata to detox, maybe because you want to CONTINUE to tox with a beer of a glass of cheap wine.... maybe coffee for two on a 4:00am Tuesday night, maybe you want burger and fries? or maybe because you were too tired (or drunk) to think about some place else. Whatever the reason, around the clock is indeed one of those New York bleh default places, that rain or shine, will always be there for you. Even if you are not always there for them.
I will never eat at this place again. Possibly the worst service I have ever experienced and the food is nothing to write home about either. Me and my buddy both sent two dishes back before telling them we wanted our check, which took forever!
If you seek a 24 hour diner in the area there are plenty of others to choose from. I recommend Cozy's Soup and Burger just a couple blocks over on Broadway and Waverly. It's the place Adam Sandler references in the movie "Big Daddy" as he use to frequent this place when he attended NYU.
I went there last nite with about 6 friends. It was my friends 21st b'day, and we went here to get some greasy food b4 we drank ourselves silly. We called ahead to make sure we could bring a b'day, it was fine so we bought a big one!
This place a the slowest service, didn't no how to make a Bahama mama The Food: chicken fingers and calamari. Both were fried to destruction, it was discussing and came with a mystery sauce.
OK NOW HERE COMES THE DRAMA : the cake that we brought and handed to the waiter, was dropped of by a bus boy, still in the box. Confusion sets in, as we start to open up the cake box, this Asian woman(the owner?) runs over and screams that we cant eat that here.
Even thought we called to confirm the cake, she still said no, that the person told us the wrong thing and we would have to take our cake elsewhere.
I'm not in the restaurant biz but i'm pretty sure, if someone just dropped over $100 bucks in my place i would let them eat cake.
Ok yes this place is cheap, yes, but that is were the goodness ends. I WILL NEVER BE BACK!
Who wants breakfast at like 4am in the morning???
duhhhh MEEE and like 323292492840284 other fellow New Yorkers!! This is how we roll! It's all about late night partying and then capping the night off with real Diner food, laughs, and experiences!
the Wait staff there are super nice, it was my friends birthday and they made her a birthday shot: kalua, whipped cream, chocolate on the house to say Happy birthday to her, they are attentive and super nice esp if your friend is about to puke on eveyrthing in sight, they take the time to get your friend a plastc bag and a cool bounty!!!
Usually, when it's late and I'm drunk, I want FOOD. I don't really care if it's gourmet stuffs (as long as it doesn't taste like ass) or if it's healthy (as long as I don't get sick the next day) or if it's Zagat rated. I just want quantity and a reasonable price.
Around the Clock exceeded my expecatations on those fronts and more, when my friends and I stumbled in one night for some grub. I ordered a spinach omelet and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a huge plate covered with a plump steaming omelet. It was also nice to be able to order a Stella to wash it down and provide a nightcap.
I believe we also ordered some appetizers, though my memory is a bit fuzzy on this point. I think it was the calimari, and I think it was really good.
I do have one memory of that night, however, that sears itself forever in my mind, a burning scar that triggers a clarity of experience that stands out amongst a landscape of memories blurred by alcohol.
It was towards the end of the meal. My friends seemed to enjoy their food as well that night. Arthur O. gulped down his spicy plate with relish, and then started picking at the peppers. Or was it the peppers on Gretchen B.'s plate?
Whoever's plate it was, Arthur issued an enthusiastic recommendation for the peppers and offered it to Michael S. and I. Still a bit hungry, I eagerly took on his offer and used my fork and knife to slice off a nice chunk, then quickly stuffed it in my mouth and chewed like a starving dog. Michael S. followed suit.
It was good, at first. Only after swallowing did the spiciness of the pepper finally reach my brain. My mouth was on fire. I realized that I needed water. Immediately. Unfortunately, none was around. I started drinking my beer. The carbonation only served to compound the burning sting.
Eventually the burn spread down my esophagus and into my stomach, and I responded by going into a half-comatose shock, sitting there dazed and looking ill, yet unable to do anything about it. I was worried about the ramifications of the pepper when I visited the toilet the next morning. Surprisingly, nothing painful happened the next day, to my relief.
The pepper hit Michael S. in the same way and we were both angered at Arthur for having played a cruel joke on us. He of course looked at us innocently and denied having done anything of the sort. It was hard to tell at that point of the night.
I have never been so anxious to get home and write a bad review of a place before. I'm not even sure why i'm being so generous and giving it a 2nd star.
maybe its for the fact its so cheap, i dunno.. but i would be tempted to say you get what you pay for, but i didn't even get that. ok maybe the onion rings were passable.
i got a pint of flat beer, and my medium rare burger came extremely well done and cold. how do you do that? not sure. i sent both back, only to find they were out out of bass, and that was the only barely passable beer they had. then the burger came back. hot and medium , if not medium rare.. so i felt a little better - until i tasted it. bleech. not yummy.
ordered a cup of tea. i wouldn't take a bath that cold.
finally the check came, and it was incorrect.
if i didn't go next door to angel's share after, which improved my mood, this would have gotten one star.
i can assure you - i'm not going back
Imagine a stereotypical Jersey diner, and this place is pretty much that.
The food is just "eh" (the wings were entirely too greasy), the staff seems to be mute, and the atmosphere of the place just screams "quiet but bitter desperation," but I suppose you can't go wrong with cheap diner-esque food so close to the overpriced bars and "unique" restaurants of the East Village.
Bathroom Grade: 5/10. Like most of the rest of this place, it was just whatever.
If i could give lower than a one i would. On the one and only occasion I have been here i walked a huge swarm of flies but for some reason i stayed and decided to eat. I had a lovely veggie sandwich and some sangria and then spent the next day in the bathroom. DONT EVER GO HERE EVER EVER EVER EVER
Three nights ago, I was hanging in the e. village with a group of friends and at 1 am, we needed food. No brainer -- Around the Clock. So we walk four blocks north, turn on the corner on 9th street and WHAT THE FUCK??!!, what was once the beacon of our late-nite munchies is now just a hollow, boarded-up storefront. We were all in a kind of quiet dazed shock. I mean, I've been going to this place for...wahhh, I don't wanna think about it! It was too much. I am definitely gonna miss this place. How did this happen?! It was always packed when I was there. We had to shuffle on down to Moonstruck diner, where I ate a soggy veggy burger. It was. just. not. the. same. RIP Around the Clock.

After many, many too many years of eating here, it's time for me to finally review this staple of… Read more »
I had almost forgotten what a drunk night-out staple this place was. Definitely used to eat here at least 3-4 times a week in college (no it's not that great) and hit this place up twice this week within 10 hours. 6am and 2pm. Glamorous.
I was never a huge fan of this place, the food was always a bit mediocre and kinda hit or miss. They do have a bit of everything as well as some not too bad healthy and vegetarian options. Last time...well, second to last time I ordered their mozzarella sticks which were disastorous. Tasted like stale Am. Cheese in the middle. Yuck! I also try to avoid their water which always tastes horrid to me (FYI, I'm also a known water-snob) and/or add 2-3 lemons to it. I am a fan of their black bean burritos, onion rings, and they can make pretty good omelettes and my friends LUH-OVE their steamed veggies and the side of carrot-ginger dressing that comes on the side. My absolute all-time favorite dish however, would be their Nachos for 1. Which is definitely sizeable for 2 or 3 or 4. ATC is a place of convenience and serious affordablility.
This place is a staple of my monthly restaurant routine. A solid diner with healthy choices and a delicious, cheap brunch that includes a beer.
Normally I order bacon, eggs, french toast, side of fries, and an english muffin along with beer and coffee in the morning. And while the French Toast can be a bit bready at time (not warm enough in the middle, doesn't have that almost custard feel) everything else, though simple, is spot on. When my fiancee and I want a quick place to get a bite, she can get her hummus and I can get my burger.
Stopped in here while in the area and looking to grab a late night bite with Mr. S. We couldn't decide what we wanted, but were willing to try our hands at this 24/7 diner.
Okay, so I walk in, and BAM, I hit a bar. This is weird to me. Since when do diners have bars? Fine. I understand, the place is trying to milk the fact that people are always in need of that "last drink" of the night, and Around the Clock is willing to give it to them.
We were seated, and at this point, I'm thinking grilled cheese with tomato, ohhh yesss. BUT to my surprise, there is no grilled cheese on the menu. WTF mate? Is this for real, a diner with no grilled cheese? I asked the waiter, and he confirmed this preposterous fact, but pointed to something on the menu called the "Cooper." I read it, and it was tomato, mozzarella cheese, and pesto toasted on challah bread. Still in a grilled cheese state of mind, I thought, how can I alter this to my liking? So I said, "Can I have wheat bread instead of the challah, American cheese instead of the mozzarella, and no pesto?" (Muahaha, I thought to myself, I have beaten the system.) But the man turned me down, and said he could hold the pesto and change the bread, but the mozzarella was here to stay. Fine. I'll try it.
So he comes out with what I was expecting to be somewhat grilled cheesy, but NO. They had still kept the challah toast, accidentally. The man apologized, and since I am not one for confrontation, I just accepted the meal as it was. And I'm glad I did. The challah toast was delicious! And the melted mozzarella and tomato was perfect. Ohhh, soo good! I am ashamed I doubted it. But that's what will happen when you have a closed mind, people. Let that be a lesson to all of you.
Anyways, I finished it, and was so satisfied. The boyf had gotten some type of omelet he was content with, and the fries were good, too. Reminiscent of McDonald's, but that's not exactly a bad thing, especially at 1 in the morning.
Very decently priced, everything came out to $12 or so, and I must recommend the Cooper to the next visitor. Will I be back? Maybe. The service was alright - took forever for our water to be refilled, and I didn't much care for the atmosphere. Props for being open Around the Clock. Perhaps, If I'm in a similar situation, in the same area, and on a hunt for the Cooper, I'll revisit.
One of those places that I only go to when my group for some reason decides to post-drunk eat there by some mysterious consensus.
The service is good but the food is so miserably average and forgettable while occasionally tipping into bad territory that I basically have to be brow beaten into eating here by a bunch of drunks.
You couldn't pay me to eat here again. You couldn't even offer to take me out to eat here. I could be offered free meals for the rest of my life and I still would never go again...absolutely no way whatsoever.
Around the Clock has the absolute worst service--rude and unfriendly and unprofessional--I've ever experienced. The food is decent but it certainly doesn't warrant the effort, or facilitate any desire, to subject myself to the lackluster service that it provides.
It's crap, and I cringe every time I walk past the joint.
I can't believe this place closed! I can't say I've been here a lot, but I've been here a few times to really appreciate this place. It's a 24-hour diner in an area where there are many bars and drunk kids stumbling around. How could this close? Where the hell am I going to get food at 3AM when I'm in the East Village? *Sigh* The few times I've been here have been fun. I played the drinking game Kings for the first time in this place. I've come in here at crazy hours of the day just because my friends needed to relax and get a quick bite. Wow... Around The Clock- you will be surely missed. Hope to see you again.
This is the quinessential place for broke students. I came here when I was 19, that was 19 years ago. I still think about this place. First time I had the carrot ginger salad dressing, and I still love it. It's a good oldie but goodie, very reliable diner type food. I've also gotten here piss drunk until 4 AM and I miss those days. I raise my glass to you, ATC.
Not bad diner food and won't hurt the wallet.
I like that after a night of throwing back the drinks I can get something to eat that will soak up all the booze I've consumed.
Bonus: Hands down best veggie burger I've ever had.
Bonus:The orange ginger salad dressing is amazing as well.
Bonus:Not too expensive either in a city of over priced food
Bonus: open 24 hours
Negative: we had a hard time finding it the 2nd time after stumbling upon it the first
Around the Clock has always been my default "not sure what I'm in the mood to eat" place, and they always come through with delicious offerings like their turkey burger or the Hecht Park sandwich. I always leave with a full belly and a smile on my face because they're cheap and the service is fast and friendly.
They also have a pretty decent brunch menu too. Check it out if you're in the area and don't want to spend a lot of money (or don't have a lot to spend). Outdoor seating is awesome too, because it's a great people-watching spot.
I came here last fall and it was nothing more than a mediocre brunch experience. I guess with a name like "Around the Clock", I probably should have eaten here at 4 AM and severely under-the-influence. That might have helped the situation. My main beef with poor bar/diner food is that it usually costs too much. Around the Clock is case-in-point.
I really used to love this place. I would come here at all hours and I have had everything. And honestly, everything here is good, even the stir fry chicken...mmmmm....The prices were great, even when they raised them a little. I used to bring everyone here, because they have something on their menu for everyone. But I am so upset that they are closed. I will really miss my ATC.
Although, our waitress looked like she had plans to go home and slit her wrists (very sad looking emo girl, I apologize for the stereotyping), the service was decent and I was excited to see the place was still hopping at 3:30 am, but not so hopping that we couldn't get a table.
My nachos were excellent, but my boyfriend's calamari was what you'd expect from a diner. The menu is extensive featuring reasonably priced, ethnically diverse cuisine. I'd definitely like to go back and check out their breakfast, nothing beats midnight french toast.
----------
I went back during the day and it was a much more enjoyable experience (not having just rushed out at 3 am for an asthma inhaler had a lot to do with this). The waiter was friendly, we were seated by the window and had a nice view of the people eating outside (I love to people watch when it's easy to be descrete). My caesar salad was great and I love that they sell root beer.
DO come here at 4 in the morning when you're craving banana pancakes!!! DO come here when you want a quick delish tuna melt or a nice filling bean & cheese burrito for lunch.
Their $10.99 weekend brunch special (with a mimosa) is a steal in this city.
Their menu is cheap cheap cheap and the food is filling and hits the spot.
:[
walked past this place last week to see it completely shut down. sad. very sad. lol goodbye around the clock!

I came across this place once with a friend when we were wandering the Village late one night. We… Read more »
Post billiards, my date continued here, where we grabbed a drink and some calamari. The drinks were fine, the service was fine, the company was excellent. I guess that would tilt me to give a higher rating, but it really was a comfy type place to go hang out with a friend or a date and chat.
The calamari was..interesting. It was huge rings, which I've never really seen, and a bit rubbery as a result, but the batter and sauce were good, so kudos for an interesting culinary experience.
Everyone knows this place is open 24 hours a day. What's less known is they've got a good lunch special. I recently had a 'healthy hero' sandwich, (assumed non-healthy) fries, and a Diet Coke all for $5.95. The outdoor seating doesn't get much sun but that's a minor complaint.
It's funny how a place with a 'Open 24 Hours" policy often translates into "place I would go to drunk at 4AM but otherwise wouldn't frequent." I've got to assume these restaurants get a decent amount of people who consider themselves too good for the establishment but resign themselves to eating there on these late nights - especially b/c alcohol wears down their defenses and/or decision making skills. I wonder if I started shifting my calendar and somehow made it known that I'm open for sex every night from 2AM - 6AM if I'd attract hot drunk girls who wouldn't otherwise sample my menu...
damn, is it ugly in here!
i expected much better decor on the inside, if only because the neon clock sign outside was so cute. however, the inside looks pretty depressing, and it's quite possible that the furniture they use hasn't changed since the place first opened up. there wasn't even any paint peeling from the wood.. the WOOD was peeling itself off from... itself.
meh whatever, the prices are good, and service was fast.
heygirlhey! where'd all this food come from? giant pieces of garlic bread [tasty!], a big plate of veggies, cheese, & rice [bigger than i imagined], and this tart-y, unknown orange sauce. "what is it?", i ask. turns out that stuff i've been lavishly pouring and dipping every possible thing in is carrot&ginger.
what?! but i HATE carrot, and ginger! i must suddenly have been whisked away into a vortex of tastiness, in the rundown schlump of ugly that is Around the Clock. but wait, my garlic bread is yummy too, as is my giant veggie dish! and all this gut-busting simplicity for $5.95? it's true!
while i wouldn't ever crave the food from here..
like that average-looking "friend with benefits", it's convenient, cheap, and does the job right.
