Review from li l.
San Francisco, CA
aroma's hamati bakery's pita bread is the best i found in san francisco. it's meaty, tender and tasty.
i put a pile of hummus and well-cooked ground beef into the pita pocket, and i'm the happiest man in san francisco.
alternatively, a pile of cottage cheese will also do.
i like the white pita more than the whole wheat pita, but i guess the latter is healthier (anyhow i'm gonna stick to the white pita.)
get it fresh, because (luckily) it doesn't contain all the preservatives your common bread brand contains.
the white pita bread contains only: flour, yeast, thyme, oregano, olive oil, salt, sugar and filtered water.
while my local bread brand contains this long concerning list: Enriched Wheat Flour [Flour, Barley Malt, Ferrous Sulfate (Iron), "B" Vitamins (Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid)], Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Yeast, Wheat Bran, Wheat Gluten, Whole Wheat Flour, Molasses, Butter, Contains 2% Or Less Of: Salt, Soybean Oil, Whey, Monocalcium Phosphate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Ammonium Phosphate, Honey, Yeast Nutrient (Ammonium Sulfate), Calcium Sulfate, Dough Conditioners (Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Calcium Dioxide, Calcium Iodate, Datem), Cellulose Gum, Guar Gum, Soy Fiber, Ethoxylated Mono-And Diglycerides, Mono- And Diglycerides, Polysorbate 60, Soy Flour, Vinegar, Calcium Propionate (To Retain Freshness).
so i stick to the hamati bakery's pita bread, buying it fresh daily. -

First discovered on the bread shelf of Dean's Produce in Millbrae, CA
and then found at the Milk Pail market in Mountain View
were bags of this large circular donut shaped bread with a hollow center encrusted with roasted sesame seeds on the surface with a very tempting and electrifying nutty fragrance that beamed out of the bag, that sent screaming messages of "BUY ME AND EAT ME NOW" to the brain. (Note: sounds dirty but it's not ;-) )
Turns out this wonderous creation is known as Hamati Bread.
It is baked by Aroma's, which interestingly in google maps directory the address and listing correspond to a Aroma's Pizza and Grill, but the slip of paper in the bag says
Aroma's Hamati Bread - Sesame Seed with a caption "Home of the Homemade bread". The address and phone # matches with Aroma's Pizza N Grill. Not sure if the pizza place is still there or if it turned into a bakery.
Ingredients: Flour, Yeast, Thyme, Oregano, Olive Oil, Salt, Sugar, Water, Sesame Seed
HIGHLY recommended if you are a huge lover of any of the following (as well as the flavors of sesame seeds):
-bread of any kind
-naan
-Chinese style green onion pancake
-Pita
-Halal type wraps
-Tortilla
-Northern Chinese style zi ma buobing (baked sesame flatcakes) also common in Halal Chinese Muslim restaurants. (Honestly Hamati Bread from Aroma's comes close but a different version without having to trek down to the South Bay to enjoy an in house made version)
This hamati bread is great by itself and can go with virtually anything.
Reheat in the oven if need be, or just enjoy it right out of the bag at room temperature. Consume within days of buying to get the most out of the nutty flavor.
If Aroma's is indeed a bakery, they should have more than just the hamati offering.
This is definitely a huge standout in the line of Middle Eastern & Russian style bread offerings (the Russian style rye is excellent smelling in its own right) on the shelves of Dean's Produce and Milk Pail market. -

Yup, still good. You can also get it at Valencia Farmers Market at 24th and Valencia, but do Samir a favor and shop his goods too. He's got the top-quality hummus to go with it, anyway.
