Not bad. Got the chicken curry, and while they used white meat, it was mostly not dry and just the right amount of spiciness. I think I could have had it a little spicier, but oh well. The curry was delicious and not too oily either!!

Though the serving of rice was good, although I hate how it was separate from the meat.. The naan was okay. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't special. I have to say, I am disappointed how expensive the food is here for the sizes. In terms of size, it's fine for me. But it's just way too expensive. I could have easily gotten a meal this size (maybe with a bigger naan) at home for half the price of the naan, rice and curry.

Also had the gulab jamun. I wasn't too impressed, but it was still warm by the time I finished the rest of the meal. It was too sweet for me.

Ordered takeout from here from Foodler: http://www.foodler.com...

The delivery guy arrived promptly and was very polite. I tried the Shabnam Curry, which was excellent. Tangy and spicy with fresh mushrooms. I hate when I order a mushroom dish from an Indian restaurant and it's obvious the mushrooms are the soggy ones that come out of a can. I also tried the Vegetable Jalfrezy, which was so tasty. Fresh cauliflower, broccoli, bell peppers, and onions in a red chili sauce.

I also love that when you order from here, they let you pick your level of spiciness (mild, medium, or spicy). I picked medium for both dishes. I enjoy spicy food, but I do have a threshold. I think I'm gonna be brave next time and opt for "spicy".

Very happy with my meal from Aroma!

Wanted to give this place a chance, but can't say i'd recommend it. We had a deal we used here and everything was fairly bland, sauces a little watery, I seem to recall we also had to order the rice separately.  It wasn't bad, but certainly wasn't somewhere I'd revisit when we've got other great Indian food in the area. The whole place felt like it could use a good scrub and update on decor, which I would have totally overlooked if the food had impressed me at all!

The service and ambiance at Aroma are just okay but the food is very good.  I recommend the Vegetable Samosas, Chicken Tikka Masala and Murgh Makhani.  Prices are also very reasonable and on par with other Indian restaurants in DC.

Went here with a livingsocial coupon. 10 dollars for a $20 meal -- and I took my girlfriend. Wouldn't mind overshooting the budget -- ordered two dishes.

But then they charged separately for rice for both of us -- seriously $3.75 for a little tiny thing of rice each. I'm Asian. This is wrong. $1.50/bowl would be okay. Close to four dollars each is pushing it.

And they charge you gratuity rather than letting you tip yourself -- and their service wasn't all that great. In the end it was $40 for a meal (we paid $30 with the coupon) that wasn't worth all that much -- the vindaloo was good, but I've tasted richer. My girlfriend ordered a vegetarian dish but I was not mega-impressed either.

I've been here twice on dates with my girlfriend and each time was very pleased with both the food and the service. The staff is friendly and pays close attention to your needs, from clearing used plates to ensuring a full glass of water to checking in to see if there's just anything else they can do.

The space is on the small side, so depending on the time of day and the size of your group you might face some difficulties. But I've always found the dishes to be very delicious and there's a wide variety of options. I suggest trying something new and pushing the envelope on what you're comfortable with.

The "salad" was pathetic.  Pallid iceberg lettuce with flavorless dressing.
    The pakoras were fine.
The lamb Rogan Josh was lacking robust flavor.
It's hard to get a bad Indian food meal in my experience but these folks managed to pull it off.

I'm going to keep this one simple: over-priced, over-cooked, poor service.

I ordered my usual Indian fare: samosa and chicken saag. The samosa were just okay and not at all memorable. As for the saag, the chicken was overcooked and the proportion was VERY small. I would not complain if it had included a side of rice or naan.

I really don't understand why the place was so packed and why there are raving reviews on here. Take it from someone who has traveled (and eaten her way) around India AND grew up eating homecooked Indian food (thanks to my Indian BFF): you would be better off spending your money elsewhere.

My brother is in town visiting and I thought we'd use my Groupon to go out for a nice dinner. The Groupon included one appetizer, two soups, one tidbit, two entrees, and one dessert.

We ordered the meat samosas, which had minced lamb, for appetizers. It's not exactly something to write home about. Really it was lacking in any big flavor. It was savory and comforting. Which is good, don't get me wrong, but it didn't have the oomph I was hoping for.

I ordered the lentil soup. It was delicious. Hit all the right spots. I would have much rather had a large bowl of this in place of the appetizer. Didn't try my brother's soup, the chicken and spinach soup, but he gulped it down and said it was good.

We were dismayed, like many of the other reviewers that rice was extra. They gave us a relatively small plate of rice that we decided to split between the two of us. It would have been ridiculous to have ordered another plate; that would have meant we spent darn near $7.00 on rice! I wish the servings had at least been more bountiful. There wasn't enough rice for the two of us, but we made due.

My brother ordered the chicken tikka. The chicken was tender, but it was overpowered by an almost sickeningly sweet sauce. The sweetness was too much for him. He ate the chicken, but wasn't exactly scooping the sauce onto his plate. I ordered the matter paneer and found it to be delicious. The paneer was firm, yet yielding. The sauce was very mild with the tiniest bit of spiciness in the aftertaste.

We both tried our tidbit (raita) with our entrees. It wasn't that it was disgusting, but we just didn't use it a whole lot. I felt bad wasting the raita; it just sat in the little container they gave us. It didn't add anything to our meals, nor were our meals particularly spicy. They did bring some raita to the diners at the table next to us for their child and it seemed to ease the spiciness of her food. Guess it's just something to keep in mind.

Never before had I ordered dessert at an Indian restaurant, so I have nothing to compare my experience to. We did not enjoy our dessert. Perhaps it was quite delicious in comparison to other restaurants and I merely do not like the type of dessert. It's possible. We ordered the rasmalai, which is paneer in sweetened milk, garnished with pistachios. For me it was hard to get past the texture and sweet sauce. For some reason I'm okay with the texture in a savory sauce, but not a sweet sauce. I ate one chunk of paneer--more than one bite. Just to make sure it was something I really didn't like. No. Didn't like it.

Regarding the general atmosphere, the restaurant wasn't spectacularly busy. We ate at a leisurely pace and the wait staff was *very* attentive. Our water was continuously refilled and the waiter was very helpful in his suggestions. It was chilly in the restaurant. I had to leave my jacket on.

Let's get down to business: the entrees do not come with rice. [Insert head shake here.]

The good: the chicken tikka masala was very tasty, with a sweet kick that wasn't gulp-your-water hot. Vegetarian appetizer was also good, but pretty unremarkable and basically deep-fried standards (samosa, pakoras, and aloo tikka). The pakora was the only standout. Garlic kulcha ($3.95) was really really good. Almost made up for the fact that we had to order rice.

The bad: Kedai lamb was dry and tough, and the vegetables (mixed bell peppers and onions) were huge chunks of undercooked produce. Not sure how you manage to overcook the meat and undercook the veggies, but far be it for me to question the way of the kitchen. Two plates of rice (one basmati, one muttar pulao) were overpriced ($3.25 ea.) and underwhelming.

The ugly: Our appetizer order only went in a half hour after ordering, when we asked our server if it was coming out soon. Whoops. Thusly, apps came out about 30 seconds before the entree, which defeats the entire point of appetizers, which is to a) not eat your own arm in the waiting period; and, b) make you forget how long your entrees are taking.

Thank god for the Groupon - if I had paid full price for this meal, I would have major regrets. There is much better Indian to be had in this city.

We are very confused by some of the reviews here, and even that some with low ratings aren't actually bad reviews, and somewhat based on reviewer quirks. We had two Groupons and went here twice in the last week. Both the food and service were fine. We had no bad experience, unlike what we were expecting by some of these reviews. Yeah, they charge for rice, but its a pretty good size plate, and its about $3. It's not the end of the world. In fact, I don't think we've been to a place that made you feel more comfortable coming in with a Groupon yet. Give 'em a chance, they deserve it.

I'm so glad that there is an Aroma in the District. My boyfriend and I ate here not too long ago and really enjoyed our food. I got what I tend to get -- the fish masala. It was really rich and delicious. We enjoyed a free mango lassi thanks to yelp, and it was tasty.

The one thing I don't love about Aroma is the atmosphere... it is a tad too quiet. Our service was friendly, I just didn't feel like I could even speak up without creating a scene! I'll certainly come back sometime though.

Sad to say that as much as I love Indian food, Aroma does not do the trick for my Indian cravings.  I had the chicken curry and it was not very good.  The sauce that accompanied the chicken itself was watered down and the flavors were not very concentrated. Also, you have to purchase rice separately and that is just weird.  Who wants that?  Most places charge for the item and include the rice.  It is just a red flag that you should choose another restaurant in the area and avoid the disappointment.  Even though the service was prompt and pleasant, it cannot make up for the lackluster food.

This place is mediocre. The lacha paratha is not a paratha at all, it's a naan with butter. The mattar palau has more peas than rice. The tandoori chicken was good, but dry. The boti kabob masala with tender lamb is not tender what so ever! good luck cutting the meat. The only thing that came out right was the naan.

I went here with my boyfriend with a Groupon. They took it with no problems and we enjoyed a fabulous meal. We enjoyed a three course meal with dessert and enjoyed the distinct flavor of each one. I love Tandoori chicken and this by far was the best I've had. Absolutely juicy, full of flavor, needless to say I tore it up. The service was extremely attentive, filling up my water glass at least a dozen times. My boyfriend enjoyed the vegetarian dish he had, although it had a bit too much sauce that drowned the contents of the rest of the dish. I'll agree with the other reviewers that the charge for rice would be more acceptable if it came with more rice, or was less of a charge. Overall though, I really enjoyed Aroma and will be back.

The food at Aroma is definitely deserving of 4 stars, but I'm just not sold on the rest.

My boss brought me here for my going away lunch (awww!) and we arrived exactly at noon. It wasn't crowded then, but by the time we left the place was pretty packed. They have a coat closet up front which was appreciated and our waiter came up to us to ask us what we wanted to eat within about 30 seconds of sitting down. Strike one.

We split an order of samosas and I got the chicken tikka masala. The wait time for food was a bit longer than I expect at lunch, but definitely was not exorbitant. I was probably just more attuned to it because of the super awkward conversation my boss and i were attempting to have. When the food did arrive, like Andrew and Jeff, I wasn't impressed with the size of things. I only got 4 or 5 cubes of chicken and if I hadn't asked for rice I would have been very hungry leaving Aroma!

The taste of the food made up for it. The samosas had the right amount of spice and I loved my main dish. Unfortunately, the servers all but disappeared when it was time to bring the check, which was really obnoxious because my boss and I had already covered, in great detail, the 3 subjects that we can talk about.

I LOVED this place when I went there with a friend. I had a groupon and the food was delicious. This was my friend's first time trying Indian, and she loved it as well.

I had the Murgh Makhani and it was the best I have had in the city so far.
My friend had the Tikka Masala and it was just as good. The Naan was good. The rice pudding was good, and the meat samosas were delicious as well.

Also, the Tamarind chutney (dipping sauce in for the samosas) was yummy!

    I will definitely return!!

I ordered Aroma through http://Alacart.com, (similar to Takeout taxi) and the results were a dry bland seeemingly leftover mess.

Since my friend had a hankering for it, I said 'cool'. When the food arrived, the rice was clumpy and had the texture/appearance of something huriedly warmed up rather than freshly prepared. My shrimp Tandoor was straight garbage. I received a container that consisted of lettuce, 2 cucumbers and 4 shrimp.

Save your money folks, this screw up is definitely not worthy of a repeat try...

I really enjoyed the lunch I had here, and would recommend it to anyone who was staying in the area for a business trip & who has a demonstrated weakness for Indian food.

The decor is fine, but this place is trying to give a sense of fine dining when it should really just embrace a more spartan atmosphere.  The linen covered tables jar with the worn and tired paint job and budget flatware.

The service is fine, but our waiter did get confused when I ordered dessert at the same time as lunch, and then later forgot that I had ordered a dessert at all.  The mistake was fixed quickly & politely.

The atmosphere is "enhanced" by music that is best described as smooth jazz.

I had the stuffed peppers, an item I have never seen on an Indian food menu before.  I was really impressed; it was delicious!  I also had the Gulab Jamun, which was sweeter than I'm used to (I liked this, but you should know in case you don't like things that are too sweet).

I think I would like this place a lot more if I lived nearby and could get take out frequently.  They could also become a favorite if they dropped the pretense of fine dining and dropped the price on all the dishes by a dollar or so.  Compliments to the chef for producing a delicious, unusual dish.

This is quite possibly the worst Indian restaurant I've ever been to.  Went to lunch yesterday with 5 of my co workers.  The portions were pretty small.  And while ordering they nonchalantly asked us if we wanted rice, so we all said yes, and they brought out rice for each of us, charging us $3.  The service was terrible.  The appetizer platter is only really good for one person, it basically has 1 piece of each appetizer.  Not good for sharing.  The mango lassi was ok, but small.  We told them we would not be coming in again, and they said fine.

    AVOID THIS PLACE.

I love the word "VINDALOO." Vindaloo for me and you. We wandered into here last night... freezing and on a vain search for Asia Cafe. I'm glad this is where we landed. The service was prompt, friendly (water never got below half-full). I say the glasses are half full because I'm positive.

Anyway, I enjoyed every single morsel that hit our table (vindaloo, tandoori, other things I can't pronounce). Once we thawed out, the cold delicious Kingfisher beer was a fine heat quencher. Don't know about the  prices because my good bud, Ricky, picked up the tab, but I'm definitely going back.

I ordered from Aroma through Takeout Taxi one night, and was very impressed with the quality of the food.  I agree with Andrew K that the portion sizes could have been larger, but all of the vegetarian items that I ordered were under $10.

The food was well seasoned and not oily like some Indian food can get (especially takeout), plus I didn't have to worry about service ;)

I definitely plan on stopping in to the restaurant sometime to get the full experience, but for now I'm pretty sold on this place.

This place was very nice! I have a http://restaurant.com coupon which really helped steer me me here - that, and it was far enough away from other Restore Reason rally goers. I stood in line with you guys for 6.5 hours, go away! My companion and I were pretty happy to walk from C Street to I Street, to have the place to ourselves generally.

The food was tasty, tangy, filling, and delicious. We had a slightly inattentive server, but since it was becoming the dinner hour on a Saturday night, I could forgive them. I had a chicken curry with almonds and raisins,  and a chicken spinach soup. Amazing. I love my curry, and I was fascinated by the rice. My partner-in-food-crimes had a lamb kabob and she'd ordered the lentil soup. She raved about it, and though I tried it, I didn't see the appeal.

The place is a little small, and parts of it feel a little grimy and disorganized, but on the whole, I thought it was an excellent experience.

I absolutely love this restaurant.  I've been here several times for lunch and thought the food was amazing.  The naan and rice were made just the way I like it.  I've tried their vegetarian combination and a spicy seafood dish.  The vegetarian dish was similar to other dishes I've had but the seafood dish was nothing I've ever had in this area.

I would have given this place 5 stars but I thought the food was a bit pricey for lunch and my dish did not include rice or naan, so I didn't know they charged me extra for that.  The waiter should have said something.  The service could be a bit better because sometimes there was a confusion of what was ordered.  The food also takes a bit longer than most places for lunch.

Our original plan was to eat sushi at Kaz Sushi Bistro before a show at Constitution Hall, but with a 45 minute wait for a table we went next door to Aroma.  The restaurant wasn't crowded and there was one person waiting in foyer... after a while he told us he was waiting for carry out.  We poked our head in and someone found us.   As other reviewers have mentioned, the service was apathetic at best.  For being uncrowded, it took an inordinate amount of time for our meals to be served... and when they were brought out our meal, they served us dishes we did not order and a discussion ensued as to what we ordered vs. what was on the table.

All of the dishes looked relatively the same, with heavy brown sauces relatively devoid of meat.  The flavors were average, the portions relatively small.... probably why the Washingtonian Magazine awards in the lobby were from the 90's... this place has seen better days.

We went there with Indian friends invited over from Atlanta, they were pure veggies. The place was croweded and in order to accomodate us they had tried to mash tables together. And my mistake I knocked a bottle of beer over a lady on the next table trying to wriggle into the seat. Couldnt be aplogetic and embarrased enough but still the space could have been more.

On the fare served, was pretty decent. All mildly spicy- the panner makhanwala and garlic kulcha were the best, avoid the baingan bartha and veg biriyai

overall a good mid point choide

Just OK. Three of us tried a wide array of the offerings and agreed we had enjoyed better versions elsewhere. The garlic naan was way too garlicky and spicy. The lamb saag wasn't tender and not simmered in the sauce, just topped with spinach sauce. While the veggie samosas were good, their dipping sauce was too hot and spicy. We found the rice pudding too sweet, and they were out of gulab jamun, which was what we had really wanted. Service was so-so, as well.

The food was good in the lunch thali - but COME ON - for $11 I deserve more than 3 tiny ramekins worth of food (bengan bhartha and two tiny chunks of lamb rogan josh). I get more when I go to Costco for free samples.

I actually give this place 2.5 stars. This place has average food, average service in a really cramped awkward seating area.  Nothing special about this place, but they're dependable and you can get a decent meal there.  I rather walk a couple blocks to Mehran's for Pakistani.

Nothing major, good tasting and quaint setting.  We enjoyed a going-away luncheon at Aroma.  Service is average...nothing over the top and not the friendliest, welcoming people...more like business-as-usual-in-DC kind of folks.  I enjoyed my favorite Chicken Korma.  It's kind of pricey for indian food and especially lunch portions.

**** 3.5 stars for hospitality and excellent business lunch ***

If you work in the downtown area or find yourself near the Farragut West metro, try Aroma for lunch or dinner.  For lunch it is a favorite spot, - the tandoori mixed grill for 2 is very nicely done and affordable.  It provides a good balance of lean meats, veggies (subzi) and lentils along with naan and rice.  The vegetarian thali for lunch is also delicious, - sometimes it includes roasted, spiced eggplant which is very nice.  It is a little rich but worth it for a special treat.  I have also had the non-veg thali which may include a choice of meat dishes (in sauce or curried).  You will not leave this restaurant hungry.  The portions are generous and the meal is well-balanced.

Aroma offers a small number of lunch specials as an express lunch, which means you can usually finish your nice, sit-down lunch in less than an hour.  The ambiance is elegant but cozy.  There is not a great deal of privacy at lunch but you will enjoy a nice meal.

The menu is almost exclusively North Indian; within that, the restaurant offers some of the more rich and complex dishes.    The a la carte choices are plentiful, but actually, this is one of the restaurants that offers equally nice choices on the thalis (platters), especially at lunch.

The feeling of hospitality is very good at this restaurant and the hosts welcome you in a sincere and respectful manner, especially if you are a repeat customer.  I read the other reviews about how the waiters can be a bit pushy about "telling you what you want."  This is unfortunately true on some occasions, but you should talk to a manager if this happens.  In particular, do not put up with this treatment if you are a Desi.  The management is courteous and very hospitable - especially respectful of Desis - and they care about the quality of service.  I have often been asked by the manager/owner when departing whether everything was fine and I do offer an opinion.

The only disappointing experience I have had at Aroma was once when I went there for Diwali, only to find that the restaurant was sold out of sweets.  They have good, classic North Indian sweets and I understand that their catering is very good for special events.  I've heard it is also reasonably priced.

A bit pricey for lunch but totally Delish. I love the Lamb Vindaloo and think they have awesome Samosas. I wouldn't come here for dinner because parking can be a challenge.  Space is tight and it is frequently crowded - but- sometimes I enjoy that:)

I am writing an updated review because I am shocked -- SHOCKED -- at some of the terrible reviews.  This is my favorite Indian restaurant in DC, and I can honestly say that I been to 90% of the Indian restaurants in town (some of them multiple times).

First, the service here is more than adequate: friendly greeting when you walk in, prompt service, water always refilled before it runs out, etc...  I have no complaints about the service.

Second, the food is spectacular.  Specifically, the chicken tikka masala is the best I have ever had...and I have had a ton of chicken tikka masala in my time.  Ask if the rajma (red kidney bean curry) is available -- it is amazing.  I've also had the mixed grill, chicken saag, saag paneer, chicken tikka, baigan bharta, chana masala (and others I can't recall now) and they were all delicious.

The portions are the same as you'd find in any other comparable Indian restaurant.  Fills you up but leaves a bit of room for dessert if you want it.

The saturday lunch buffet has six entree options, a good mix of meat and veggies.

The food is so amazing that I had Aroma cater my wedding.  I take everyone here when they are in the mood for Indian food and they love it.
