The food was pretty good, very big portions. When we went there was a lunch special where you got salad, soup, an entree, and dessert. So for the price it definitely was worth it. The dessert was a pineapple ice cream with strawberries and it was DELICIOUS!
However, the service was not half as good as the food. Our server barely spoke english and then gave me the wrong drink. Made me feel like it was my fault because of the way I worded it, even though I pointed it out on the menu. Acted like it was a big deal to fix so I just kept what she gave me. She gave me a whole speech about "next time when you order that" and that there was no way the drink could be served cold. It was the biggest crock of bull I've heard.
Anyways, there is 15% gratuity added already so make sure you note that. -

Food is great, baked goods are great. It's true what everybody says about the service, there's a sort of attitude about the servers but my friends and I just take it as a funny sort of schtick.
BE AWARE: There is a 15% gratuity added automatically to every bill regardless of party size or total price. It took my friends and I about 7 or so visits before we realized this, up until then we'd been tipping 20% on top of this 15%. Those lucky bastards.
IMO that's pretty scummy of this establishment and that's why i give them only 2 stars.
The "people watching" is great on a friday or saturday night!
*update* i was just informed that the 15% is simply a "service charge" that goes to the owner. Double scummy!! I think I will probably just not patronize this establishment anymore. Between this and tipping you'll be paying 35% of the bill. -

A couple of friends and I went here for a late snack on my birthday. Let's start with the menu. The format of the menu is incredibly stimulating. It must be a forty page menu, but every dish is photographed and displayed. A blessing and a curse. Everything looks delicious! It was difficult to make a choice. I was pleasantly surprised by all of the vegan-friendly options.
My friends ordered mojitos. They claimed these were the freshest, tastiest mojitos they have ever tasted. Our waiter brought a basket of bread to our table. We asked if the bread was vegan and he just laughed and walked away...which was bizarre. I ordered "the combination platter", which was a plate of chopped salad, hummus with a pita, and fries. Their pita bread is killer. The salad was good, but not anything special. The fries were thick and not too salty...just the way I like 'em ;). One of my friends ordered the avocado rolls. If deep-fried guacamole sounds like something you'd be interested in, this is your place. YUM! I would definitely recommend sharing that dish with someone though, because you only need a couple to satisfy.
The reason my rating isn't higher is the terrible service. Our waiter leaned against a post, refused to look at us, and mumbled specials to us in a voice that was less than audible to a human ear. Even when asked to repeat it, he didn't speak up. We would ask him questions and he would either not answer them or shrug. At the end of the night, I asked for a box to wrap up my food and he seemed to understand what I needed. We payed the bill and the guys were finishing up their drinks. Our waiter was refilling sugars and salt shakers. It seemed like he was avoiding eye contact with us. About thirty minutes and several tries to flag our waiter down later, we got his attention and he retrieved a box. At least he was pretty. -

Be prepared to pay a 15% "Service Charge" - not a tip - a "Service Charge" according to the manager. I asked what the Service Charge was for and she said they give it to the workers. The manager went on to say that they were having difficulties with European tourists not leaving tips (duh, it's not customary in some places in Europe) which is why they instituted the infamous "Service Charge". Really?! Not only are they insulting our visitors but they are passing on the costs to the locals and American tourists.
The atmosphere is lifeless, the food is mediocre, and the staff could care less of you were there or not. Why should they? They have that 15% guarantee!
Do yourself a favor - skip Aroma Bakery Cafe and buy yourself a nice glass of wine with that 15% "Service Charge"! -

In spite of all bad reviews this place has I like it alot.
It's not a place to go out for a date or romantic dinner but for breakfast or lunch or desert simple lovely desert this place is perfect.
All deserts are great (I tried couple of those and was happy every time)
I recommend the lentil soup (I hate onion thus this soup inside of the bread was good or I was too hungry)
Tofu sandwich is good too.
I bet everything there is good cos everything i tried was tasty. -

Food : fresh and delicious !!!
Desserts: yummy !!!
Atmosphere: Pleasant !!!
Service: Depends on a waiter :)
Overall i love this place. It is nice to hang out with friends there since they close very late and no one is pushing you to leave. I would have given the place 5 stars, but they really need to work on their service. :) -

I've been here many times and the food is kick a@#. Enormous menu, great espresso bar, amazing desserts and killer mojitos. Plus they are open late.
They lose a star for some B.S. 15% service charge added to all bills. Wow, missed that one! You guys owe me $13! The staff also isn't that friendly but most of the servers look like models. -

As you will note I never do reviews when it is not at least 3 star as I don't like to waste my time spreading the negative, but I will make an exception. I am forced to go to this place a bunch since it is two feet from where I work and it drives me crazy. The prices are far too high for what it is, the service is so so and the food is very inconsistent. I will say I like their fresh mint tea and the fact that the menu is so so big, but even that gets annoying!

The 15% service charge IS a tip shared in a general pool by all staff. I verified this with manager. Telling you it's not a tip is a scam by waiters to get more money!
The food is good, but don't go here if you expect any type of service. -

Very Israeli! They have hot waiters and gorgeous delicious desserts :)
The tea is so yummy, I highly suggest you try it. Make sure tho that if you change your order they are paying attention. I've been here a couple of times, and each time have noticed that when I want more tea I have to ask more than once. EH, and the other thing that was not so great was we orderd a couple of things that never came and we were still chaged... so just pay attention to your bill. Other than that, the food is great and the salads are HUGE. And delicious ;-) -

I went to have a quick bite with my girlfriend and since she lives nearby, she suggested we go to Aroma, despite me having had a bad experience once before. I had a weird taste in my mouth and really wanted to have a water asap.
This is what happened... we were seated by the hostess without menus.. we sat there for about 8 minutes waiting for menus and water or to be acknowledged at all... finally I flagged one down and asked for menus and water, she brought menus, but no water... okay..
a few minutes later she comes back and we ordered... no water.
Then 20 minutes later our appetizer comes, I ask again, can I please have some water... and can I get some napkins as our appetizer was messy... she comes right back with the napkins. at this point I say "I'm sorry, but I think I've asked like 3 or 4 times, I am really thirsty, so can we please get some water like right now" and she cuts me off, "yeah i know, i'm going to get it right now" um okay, well if you know, then where is it lady??
finally we got some water.
Then shortly after we got our food. 1 question... How is it possible to mess up a panini? the bread was soggy and dry at the same time... I waited for the server to return so I could let her know, but after 15 minutes I just decided, we were never getting out of there if I tried to get a new meal.... I finished my water, hopping for a new one, but just then we saw our server walk out of the restaurant....I guess she was off, but we didn't get a new server... i went inside and asked the guy behind the counter and he said he'd send someone over... I said to just have whoever comes please bring the check...
Shortly after, a new server came with the check and apologized and brought a complimentary fruit tart from the bakery.
15% service charge added to the check for the slowest and worst service I've ever had, on top of poor quality food...... I happen to work in the nightclub industry, so i know that many clubs take all or part of the service commission and it's not a gratuity. Because its called the "service charge" or "commission" it's legal while it's illegal to touch anyones gratuity...In New York this law was overruled and it's illegal to misrepresent any fee as a gratuity. I wish they would do that here... so I still tipped because that's how they pay their bills, and I get it... I tipped 20% as usual ... which turned into basically paying 35% on top of their inflated prices and that's also an hour and a half I won't get back of my life...
two sandwiches and one artichoke dip (yummy, but i've had better) should never come to $56
One star. I can't believe this place is still in business.
I don't like cooked fruit so the Tart was a waste.. but it was a nice gesture. -

15% service charge is NOT A TIP. We talked to the staff and it is not a tip given to the waiters as in other restaurants that add the 15%. It is just snuck onto your check to go back to the owners.
(The times we had been there before we thought it meant the tip was included so unintentionally we had stiffed the waiters. This time we happen to ask to make sure it was going to the waiter and had quite a shock to find out NO.)
I find this to be a horrid, unfair, deceitful practice not only to the patron but to the waitstaff.
Never going there again. -

We ended up at Aroma Bakery randomly, while just driving around. If I'd read these reviews, I'd definitely have avoided the place. Our experience was quite good. Good food at a reasonable price, at a pleasant sidewalk table with our dog.
As for the service, there was no hostess to be seen when we arrived on a busy Saturday afternoon, but as all the sidewalk tables were empty, we just grabbed a couple of menus and sat ourselves. When the hostess returned, she didn't seem pleased we'd sat ourselves, so she ignored us for a while. In a couple of minutes, a server came by and asked us if we'd been helped, then took our orders.
We had only one of the rectangular pizzas and the "-nana" drinks. The "limo-nana" is really tasty. The pizza (Siciliana) was decent enough, nothing to write home about. To take with us when we left, we got a couple of "Almond Moon" pastries. These are excellent.
And they do add 15% to every bill for "service". I really dislike this practice for several reasons: it's easy to miss it and accidentally add a double tip; it doesn't give the server much incentive to provide good service; and I always suspect the restaurant just keeps the extra instead of giving it to the server. -

A smoker's paradise. I didn't know there were any restaurants left in LA that have a smoking section. Aroma has a large outdoor patio, perfect for eating, drinking, and they allow smoking on one side.
Why only 2 stars? I'm not a smoker and no matter how yummy-- an iced tea and small guacamole dip should not cost $16! -

I had high hopes for this evening. You see, I've been craving the touch of a certain wonderful man. However, this man comes with too many complications, so my plans of seduction and great sex went down the drain.
I know I'm supposed to act stoic and say that Valentine's Day is just another day, but I really did feel bummed out to end up with no plans for tonight. It is also my day off from work, so I needed to do something.
Texting a dear man friend of mine my disappointed state, he invited me out. It was the most absurd situation being that he lives about 100 miles away, but happened to be in the vicinity. He's a goofball like mua & we connect. We drove the streets of Hollywood and Aroma caught our eye.
He is slender like yours truly, so a light meal was our objective.
The waitstaff was attractive. Gals with big rumps all over the place. I certainly belonged. Even the Asians had an ass. It was a strange night.
We both ordered their salad with salmon and shared a bruchetta appetizer. The salmon was lightly seared with a slight crunch. Very flavorful and delicious. We also got the recommended champagne drink containing berries. Quite refreshing.
It was festive and bright. A happy table full of merry Jewish people were creating an entertaining ruckus.
Warning! It is pricey! Come with a wad of cash.
A totally unexpected night for me. I had dismissed this dear man, but something brought us together again. -

So-so breakfast food. Not worth the $10-$12 per plate. I was already set against going back, and then learned there's a 15% "service charge" added to each check. Not a mandatory gratuity, a "service charge." Our server explained the owner does it to help pay staff costs. Isn't that supposed to be included in your food prices?
It wasn't worth the menu price, let alone the 15% on top for the privilege of eating on a crappy section of Sunset.

I have NO idea how this place has such a low rating!! I had the BEST time there!
I walked in with two friends and a dog. The sweet hostess sat us outside and even moved the giant umbrella to give us shade.
Our server, Yana, was one of the best I have ever had. She walked up before even greeting us with a bowl of water for the dog. So sweet!
She knew a lot about the menu, and that thing is INSANE. It's like a phone book. I am always weary of that, but we decided to give it a try.
I had the Ahi BBQ Salad. The piece of ahi was enormous, cooked and seasoned to absolute perfection. The salad was fresh and flavorful, really mouthwatering!
My friends had the salmon herb crusted salad and the panini sampler. They both raved, and I snuck a piece of salmon. Holy deliciousness Batman.
Yana was very attentive with our drinks and plates, but didn't bother us when we were chatting. She was really wonderful.
It seems pricey at first, but when you see what you get, it is more than fair. I will be back and very soon. :)Listed in: Foodgasim

attention: my friend works here and there is a 15% service charge on every bill, that is not i repeat not gratuity(tip)..the 15% service charge goes straight to the owner and he pockets every penny while the servers get stiffed. only hoping to get tipped on top. the owner is a theif. the servers are lucky to make 40$ a night. while the owner who sells you overpriced food in the first place makes you pay him an extra 15%. when i heard this i was sick to my stomach. please stop giving this guy your hard earned money. ask to speak with him not the managers cause they lie for him. ask to speak with, haguy and have him explain to you the 15% service charge and ask him how he can sleep at night taking all your money and not caring if his servers have enough money to pay their rent. im so upset about this. this place needs to be shut down. slave labor ended years ago!!!!! heartless bastard.

Great atmosphere, awesome selection and staff. My complaints the ridiculously intimidating menu, and the sadly bland pizza. There was way too much to choose from, and I wanted it all, but it looks like they haven't perfected everything! They could definitely go down a little in price too!

Not sure why the price level is indicated so high on yelp. While the deserts are slightly overpriced for this type of establishment, you won't regret paying for your delicious desert (let's put it that way). Wide variety of coffee at 1/2 the price of Starbucks, et al. Ambience is a 8.8 out of 10. Server Eli is a dream-come-true (a smile to die for; I need his number). Downside: the bartender/barkeep does not have a clue about how to make a real dirty martini. My sister ordered a dirty martini w/Grey Goose and I ordered one with Tanqueray. Both came back very clean. Fortunately, Eli rushed to correct the matter and my sister and I were both happily buzzed within minutes. Given that my sister lives around the corner these days, yes - I/we will return. And yes, I will be getting Eli's phone number (his smile is that good).Sorry for the rambling... I'm still buzzed from my dirty martini's.

OMG!!! JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH MY CREDIT CARD REP and he said YOU CAN write in a NEGATIVE TIP!
So i explained the situation with the 15% gratuity included and he said when you're at the restaurant you CAN actually write in a - tip. LMAO. This should solve everyone's little problem of that pesky 15% IF YOU NOTICE IT.
Power to the ppl! yeah! :D
Well, here's the main idea.
The ONLY 2 reasons I used to go here was because the food was good and it was open late. However, on my last trip the food was really terrible. The avacado rolls were soggy and seemed old, and the "pizza" we ordered had absolutely NO flavor. The only thing I really love eating here is this salad they have with corn and tomatoes and a creamy balsamic dressing. However, one time we went there the waitress had the gull to tell me "We don't serve that salad by itself." "What? I've ordered it MANY times," "No, we don't. I could get the manager for you." I just got up and left.
Low and behold, this time around I ordered THE SAME THING and they brought it. What an idiot. There's no doubt about it the servers here have an attitude problem.
The servers are terrible, dont smile, dont ask how you're doing or how your order is coming along. This last time I went, I stopped her and asked "isn't there supposed to be sauce in this pizza?" and she just looked at me stupidly and said no. Maybe we didn't look at the order description but it sure LOOKED like a pizza. She could have at least asked us if we'd like something else. But just a 'no' and off she went.
Interestingly enough whenever we go with a friend who LOOKS like the nationality of the people at this place, the service is wonderful and friendly. WTF? They've got a lot to learn about having a business in the U.S.
Now that the food has gone down the drain as well, won't be coming back here ever again. The only people I like here are the valets.
Luckily, a late-night cafe type thing opened up on hollywood near McCadden Place. When I find out the name I will post it up. Its yummy, open late, AND HAS AWESOME PEOPLE!
HOLY SMOKES!!!! I just NOTICED THE 15% "service charge" WOW THIEVES!!!!!

Review from Amy A.
Los Angeles, CA
I've been here a couple times before and while it's super overpriced ($9.95 for a kids meal of chicken strips and fries?! $9.95 for desserts, etc) I've returned because the food is good and it's a convenient in that area - not a lot of late night options in that hood.
SO...this time, the expensive, decent food wasn't enough to outweigh the rest of the crap. Not surprisingly, I'm not the first one to point out the blatant shortcomings of this place:
- Food way over priced for what it is
- Lots of smokers right outside the doors to the inside.
- Manager is a royal bitch
- Sneaky 15% gratuity added to ALL checks, no matter what the bill is or the size of your party. I'm glad we caught it
Our server was very nice and did an ok (not great) but ok job. My 3 friends and I went for dessert and coffee after dinner on Hollywood Blvd. We chose to sit inside to keep warm. All was find until about half way through our desserts, we noticed cigarette smoke indoors. I looked up and the front door was wide open and many people were smoking on the patio which wraps all the way around the front and side of the restaurant.
I politely asked if the door could be closed because the smoke was bothering us and our 1 friend is pregnant. The server said sure and it got closed for about 10 minutes.
Then the door was opened again as well as the side door and it was VERY smoky inside. Our eyes and sinuses were irritated. We asked our server, Joe, and he said he'd ask the manager. The manager told him to tell us the doors have to stay open. Um... I'm pretty sure that's against some health code, eps if people are smoking outside.
We asked to speak to the manager. She came over and gave us some BS story about the doors having to stay open because the it's too hard for the servers to go in and out with the heavy trays. The only thing she offered was to move us to a seat further away from where people were smoking, but unfortunately, we were leaving soon anyway... BECAUSE THE SMOKE WAS BOTHERING US SO MUCH.
She gave a limp "sorry" and then walked away. Like many people have mentioned here, she's an unpleasant manager who could give a crap about her customers.
The last time I was there, I had a horrible server. Basically, the only redeeming point of this place is the food. But it ain't that good. Never going back. Rip off. Rude. Smokey. Bitchy manager. -

!!!!!!!!!!!BEWARE OF RIP-OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although the food is not bad, the service completely sucks and ultimately ends-up ruining it for me.
Last time they sneaked-in a charge a 15% service charge out-of-nowhere (for a group of only 4 people total), then the waiter interrupted my conversation twice to rush me to pay the bill, so I didn't notice the added charge, and ended-up tipping another 18% on top of that.
When walking to the car I noticed it and went back asking for a refund of either my gratuity or their service charge and the manager was rude and said she couldn't do anything... what a liar! No "I'm sorry" or anything... just more rude attitude.
My friends and I are NEVER going back here!!!!! I'd rather eat a frozen burrito while its still frozen than to give these people another $1.
Be very careful about the bill, otherwise you'll be ripped off too. -

I like to come here for breakfast. Hollywood is just waking up and it is peaceful and quiet. It's in the middle of everything, which makes it a very good meeting place. Food-wise it's OK. The salmon plate is pretty good, and the coffee is decent. But I think this place is either kosher or trying to be - you won't find a ham and cheese omelet or cheese-burger on the menu.
And of course, it's over-priced, but if you would be located on the Sunset Strip, wouldn't you be to?! -

So we went to this place for the first time after hiking Runyon. It was kind of on the way home, and we usually like to go to anyplace walkable.
My first impression: The menu is OVERWHELMING! Any cuisine you could think of: They had it. And a picture of it. The menu is basically a book, so I can understand a little if the server gets annoyed that we can't make a decision so quickly. But really, I got a kind of "annoyed" vibe from her, like I was being judged for my order. Can't put my finger on it. Just the vibe I got.
I finally decided on a chicken wrap and my husband went for the cobb salad. We weren't expecting much, if I'm being honest. The whole "jack of all trades, master of none" thing. If you have EVERYTHING on your menu, there's nothing you're specializing in. Plus, I can't imagine that all the ingredients you have to stock for that kind of menu are always fresh.
That being said: I lucked out. I did enjoy my sweet and sour wrap, and my husband thought the salad was okay, although both portions were huge. Next time, we'll share, I'm sure. Because for the ultra-casual atmosphere, I was also surprised by the high prices. We spent about 60 dollars on lunch for two entrees and two glasses of wine. More than we expected for our after-hike nosh, but at least the food wasn't bad.
Would I go back? Maybe if they pared down the menu and cheered up the staff. Then I'd consider it... -

The food is good! No doubts...
The prices are very high! The food is good but not that good!!..
Why paying for a stupid can of soda 3$ every time?! Refill?!?!??
The service is horrible!! We had to teach the waiter what to do..
The host in the entrance is rude!!! Treated me like I'm in kindergarten..
If u ask me... Order home... save the hustle.. They also add cookies they bake into the order for free..

Nice location, friendly servers, and decent food... but honestly this place is very overpriced... I can't justify paying $18 for a sandwich & some fries that would cost eight bucks anywhere else... and valet parking for a bakery?!? Just oozes that good ole' Hollywood pretentiousness that we all know and love ;)

Oy vey...
The food, rather than being extraordinary, was EXTRA ordinary. Unseasoned scrambled eggs and uncrispy hash browns with sausage and fruit: $12. I'm cool paying $12 for breakfast, but it should be something other than what I'd get for $4.99 elsewhere. Seriously.
So after I paid, I saw, as other Yelpers have said, that they charged me a 15% "service charge". I asked my server "oh, so you already charged me the tip"?
He replies "Well that goes to the restaurant"...
"What do you mean it goes to the restaurant?! If I'm paying a 15% "service charge", I want it going to you. Could you please get the manager, so I can make sure the funds go to the right place?"
-He goes back to the kitchen and comes back-
"Sorry, she's busy."
"Your manager is too busy to speak with a customer"?!?! (I'm incredulous)
"Well, she's talking to the owner back there"
"Please go get the owner so I can speak with her".
-Someone else goes back and gets the owner-
"What's with the 15% service charge? Does that go to the server or to the restaurant?"
The owner answers in some absolutely cryptic way, explaining that the servers themselves take home tips daily but that for the bus boys (who were serving me at the bar) the service charge goes to the restaurant, and that they get paid out weekly. Not only does that seem quite discriminating, but is absolute hogwash, whether it's true or not. On the same receipt, there was a spot for a tip. They are double dipping, and that is bad, BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD business.
I was so flabbergasted that I forgot to tell her that it is not only uncustomary, but that it's inappropriate to charge a service charge without letting the customer know, never mind then asking for additional tips. It wasn't listed on the menu. And I was there by myself, not in a group, where it is customary to include the tip in the bill. -

My second place I go to all the time. Food is really good, love the outdoor seating. Wish the staff was a little nicer. Sometimes they are like zombies and dont know how to smile. What the hell people? Some of us come there to eat for a good time, not to be served by grouches. Yes, I have experience this on more then one occasion. So why am I giving this three stars, because I still like this place and once saw Ron Jeremy there. He sat all alone and I felt bad for him. I should have approached him and done a reading for him. That would have been interesting.
DIdn't notice the 15% gratuity added on. CRAP!!! Now I have to check my receipts and remember that next time. Turds.

The only reason I gave them 4 starts rating its because I like their foods, the servers... well you know, they all have some kind of attitude, even at the other location (tarzana). I think it's a part of the culture lol....
I really like their Ahi tuna salad, challah french toast, nana tea and their pastry its good. The valet thing is kind of shady that's why PARK ON THE STREET!! there are a lot of space. Some of the foods are overpriced, but I don't mind to once a while.
