Review from Katie L.

I don't use yelp a lot but this week it hasn't steered me wrong. So glad to find a good Indian restaurant with take out menu. (traveling alone on business, just like to curl up in hotel room rather than dine alone in restaurant.) ordered the chicken saag (medium spicy). It's tasty, but much milder and creamier looking than what I'm used to. Not disappointed at all. Even got a beer yo go with. :)

Yummy South Indian food on the menu! Dosa, idli, vada...I'm definitely planning to visit many times again!
One point off for loud-ish music from a weird flat screen TV, but the service was good, the manager friendly, and (as I said) GOOD FOOD! -

Pros: southern Indian, clean taste, great weekend buffet
cons: uneven food-been there 5 times and it ranged from delicious on a Saturday to mediocre on a Tuesday. -

Probably the worst Indian food I've had.
PROS:
I don't usually care for papadums, but the ones we were served at the start of the meal were perfectly crispy, salty, and nicely seasoned with whole cumin seeds. I would happily eat a bucket of them with a cold beer. The samosas were also pretty good, and the only item we received all night that was anywhere near adequately spicy. (More on that later.)
They get points in my book for serving goat. There aren't a ton of places that do, which is a pity. (Try it. It's delicious and seriously not weird at all.) My dining companions and I tried the goat curry. The goat was cooked perfectly, but...
CONS:
...The curry itself was blah. We tried three different dishes (goat curry, mutter paneer, and butter chicken), and they all tasted pretty much exactly the same. Not strongly seasoned, and almost cloyingly sweet. We ordered everything with 'medium' spiciness, and all three of us agreed that the level of (non-)heat we received was less than we would have expected for a 'mild' order. It wasn't just 'not spicy enough,' it was not spicy at ALL.
Also, the rice was overcooked pretty much to the point of inedibleness. You know how rice grains explode when they're super overcooked? That's what we got. I'd be unhappy to be served rice like this in any establishment, but in a restaurant that serves rice with EVERY entree, it's completely unacceptable.
OVERALL:
Maybe we were just there on an off night, but with so many really decent Indian options in Portland, I doubt I'll be going back. However, if you're Indian- or spicy-food-phobic, or you know someone who is, this might be a good place to go for a gentle introduction to new flavors. -

We've had multiple great experiences at Aroma - the staff is super friendly and accommodating, and the food is varied and fresh. We particularly like the buffet, which has a great selection of vegetarian and meat options. Everytime we've been there the buffet has been different (there is always chicken tikka masala) so it's been great to be able to try some different foods and know we'll don't have to worry about picking something off the menu. Definitely recommended!

Gone twice now and everything that I've tried has been delicious and very authentic, plus it's the only place I know of for a masala dosa (indian crepe) and other southern indian specialties.
As others have mentioned, the owners and staff are friendly and helpful.
Definitely would recommend this restaurant. -

I love this place! I am from South India and I find the food here at Aroma to be very authentic. The taste is excellent and the quality is actually quite consistent. I haven't tried their buffet yet, but that's next on my list of to-dos. The owners are very friendly and helpful. They usually come by and check to make sure each dish was prepared to your satisfaction. I fully recommend this place for their vast variety of both south and north Indian dishes.

Word of advice, the weekend buffet is better and has more variety. When we first started going, they had goat curry, coconut chutney, and just some more exotic/authentic Indian stuff. Over the past couple of weeks, when I've gone during the weekday, they basically only have chicken and vegetarian dishes. I really hope they aren't just catering to the Maine palette. But, I do love this place. As far as Indian buffets go, this has the most interesting, and the most variety. The staff is very friendly, and kid friendly. I'm guessing that the Indian restaurant across the street won't be in business much longer if it has to compete with Aroma.

DELICIOUS! Consistently delicious Indian food. I've been there three times (so far) for the lunch buffet only -- the latest time TODAY. EVERYTHING was good! (It is near the Maine Mall and in a shopping center with a movie theater (and Home Depot and all that), and so, convenient if you have other things to do).

A must try Indian restaurant.
Distinctive and strongly flavored dishes.
Have done dinner once and lunch buffet multiple times - always humming and rocking food. -

I had tried a number of other Indian restaurants in the area before I finally made it to Aroma, and I will be looking no further. I have had both pleasant interactions with the staff (in store and on the phone), and completely enjoyed their food! My favorite dishes are their Mutter Paneer, and Butter Chicken, and also really like their Veg. Samosas. Be sure to check them out next time you have Indian on the brain!

At last, an Indian restaurant that doesn't taste like all the others! We ordered all dishes from southern India tonight, and experienced a nice range of new flavors and spices. Its also a nice, warm environment, and the family members who served us were friendly and helpful.
