I love the tagline that's painted on the sign of this place: "Where you rent the bikes." I thought I was in a gumball machine! What ad-wizard came up with this slogan?
I had this great idea the day before that we should rent bikes and ride over to Race Point Beach. Great idea until I realized that my exercise routine mostly consists of Wii Sports [but let's be honest, it's mostly Wii games where I don't have to stand up].
So we rented some bikes for $16 a piece for four hours. I hadn't been on a bike since I went to pick up my car at Maaco's over two years ago to fix this huge dent, but most of that ride consisted of me talking on the phone and walking my bike on the sidewalk.
I had a little trouble adjusting to the 21 gears on my bike because each handlebar had one "shift up" and one "shift down" tab but they were opposite. For example, the gears on the left side had a shift down on the top part and shift up on the bottom, whereas the gears on the right side had a shift down on the BOTTOM part and shift up on the TOP. Follow? And I'm too stupid to remember all of this and kept going up hills in high gear.
While my BF was busy showing off his wheelies, endos and ability to ride a bike without using his hands, I grabbed, white-knuckled onto the handlebars envying his stupid freedom. Curse his ne'er-do-well attitude!
The bike experience on the trail was a pleasant one, although I had to walk my bike up a few hills when no one was around and triumphantly pedaled when there were people around. My BF's gears popped once and mine did too when we were returning the bikes but it's probably because we hadn't ridden bikes in a long time, but the bikes were in pretty good shape. Now I have black and blue reminders of the ride on the back of my legs :(
This experience makes me want to take my probably rusted and spider-egg infested bike off of the flower hanger on my porch and possibly take it out for a spin. Or maybe if Nintendo invents a Wii bike simulation game, I'd be more likely to buy it now. -

A bike rental place right on Commercial, which is probably good for its business but not necessarily for the bikers. (I find it tough to bike on Commercial, myself. You have to beat out pedestrians and cars!)
We were told that we could pay for 2 hours and could pay for 4 hours if we ended up keeping it later than two. That flexibility was great!
We were basically handed a bike without much choice. I think if we had wanted something specific, we could have gotten it. I was a bit disappointed that my seat was really squeaky and moved up and down a lot; it made biking on the dunes somewhat more challenging. -

We rented a tandem to get around the island, and it was a great decision. We got to see everything at our own pace and not get exhausted from moving between the town, beach, and our place in the east end.
On the downside, the bike we got was in pretty serious disrepair. The gears were worn out, and numerous important bearings and gears were seriously loose and out of adjustment.
On the upside, when I returned the bike, I let them know about this, and they immediately apologized and made it right, financially speaking. I've worked in shops before, so I can appreciate that it must be difficult to keep a bike, especially a tandem, in good working order, when subject to daily abuse by rental customers. Sometimes things slip through the cracks. But when it did, they took responsibility for it, and I can respect that and would be willing to give them another shot next time I'm in town. -

Seriously, stop reading this your decision has been made. Hands down one of the best bike shops around, not just in ptown. They took pride in their product and were overwhelmingly generous and friendly. When you deal with nice people it makes the experience hard to beat.

Hokey name -- extremely painless rental and return experience, and better availability during peak season than other rental places I tried. Located very close to the pier. Mountain bike and lock worked well, and having wheels in P-town was great. It's not exactly a steal; I'd say this place was 10% more costly than others, but I think the overall theme of P-town during peak travel time is that they have your wallet a bit by the balls. They did charge my credit card 100% in advance, but that wasn't a big issue.
