Hey, you don't have to be young and stupid to like these wines. You don't have to be acting like fools to visit this tasting room. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and had a most pleasant lunch in their picnic area. Nice and quiet place.
Got to meet the winemaker, Brandon. Young guy with a lot imagination with varietals, clearly influenced by his time in Paso Robles.
The host for the tasting was a great personality from the Coachella area (well known for its lack of wine industry). He had us laughing for a good 30 minutes as we made our way through the list that day. He was attentive and actually listened to our feedback.
We left with a bottle of IL Campo Field Blend (Zin and Petite Sirah). Maybe next time we visit, we will pay for the bottle. :-)Listed in: Put a Cork in It - Wine…, Wine Tasting Sonoma, Dry…

If you are going here for good, high quality wine, this is NOT the place for you. I came here with a group of 5 (including myself) during the annual Barrel tasting that was going on from March 9th-11th, 2012 and thought to myself, am I at an underage frat party or a winery?
Considering that this weekend had a substantially higher than normal rate of people (due to the barrel tasting), it was hard to tell how this place would fare on an 'average' weekend day. We arrive here around 3pm and notice there are a LOT of people; the majority of them being under 30. However, we snake our way to the front as we try a variety of their wines (which are all reds) including the "Poizon". I have to be honest here, I was not at all impressed with the flavor and feel that this wine was just plain mediocre. In fact, I truly think that Armida Winery is nothing more than just a marketing scheme to entice young whippersnappers to purchase it. Especially with the skulls on the bottles and merchandise.
The only reason I am giving this place 2 stars (instead of 1) is because the view is definitely worth checking out. Not to mention, they have a rather interesting theme which involves going through "heaven" (where you will find an angel dressed in white) and "hell" (think of it as a torture chamber with undead zombies and black lights). Either way, it is quite an experience that I have never witnessed at a winery before. I was almost thinking to myself if someone is playing a Halloween prank on me in early-springtime
Overall, I guess you would like this place if you're buzzed from drinking a the previous wineries. But if I were to go here sober, I sure as hell would not want to buy anything from this place! -

Armida serves up some "different" vibes when it comes to the wine selection. The flavors are bold and sometimes shocking, but none-the-less pack a decent punch. Poizin might be a harsh name to some marketing experts but it seems to work for Armida. This laid-back winery takes you from Heaven to Hell during barrel tasting and brings you back to a delightful ease when sitting on their patio catching some rays of sunshine and enjoying your glass of choice.
I would recommend this winery to the beginning wine-goer or to most people who just don't care for the ritz and regal that the Napa Valley name comes with. Sit back, relax, and taste some good wine at Armida. -

This year their white was excellent too much pinot noir and only one red was decent.
It was like the animal house of barrel tasting wineries and some of the girls trying to taste where ghetto fabulous. One was screaming insults to some of the other folks and the parking guy needed a job somewhere else. I can't complain about the service because it is barrel tasting but if I want to be a less educated wine drinker but want to see lots of reasonably pretty girls act stupid I would go. Otherwise there are much better places to be that offer significantly better quality. Sorry Armida but it is not just about the hype. -

Definitely a Winery with personality, Armida really tries to cater to the younger crowd. Sort of a frat party of a winery, if you go here for any of their events like the barrel tasting, be ready for a party.
Great wines, Unique themes (such as Poi-zin reserve zinfandel you buy in a coffin shaped box.), They have food, a nice outdoor patio, and a bocce strip.
When we went during the barrel tasting they had two tents set up, One was Heaven, with all white decor and catholic music playing and wine servers in angel outfits serving their white wines, and the next was hell, with strobe lights and smoke and rock music playing around a mausoleum-esque theme while servers in devil costumes served their red wines.
Quite an experience, and the wine is just as good as the theatrics. They are very popular and sometimes have trouble keeping up with large crowds, so just know if you go on a busy day you might have a bit of a wait to buy something and a crowd to wiggle through. -

Bad service, wine isn't very good. Too bad because the property is pretty nice, but they didn't care one bit that we were there, basically ignored us, and the wine wasn't much to our liking. Sorry Armida!

0 stars if possible!
Our Winter Wineland group made a huge mistake and visited Armida Winery. Let me get right to the meat of what went wrong on their end:
Our group had 24 people. After parking our bus, we all hopped out into the parking lot. Since it was Winter Wineland, we all had our empty glasses in hand ready for wine. In my other hand was a Heineken. (Obviously we were all drinking on the way to each winery)
Armida Parking Lot Guy: You can't take that in here!
Me: Okay, I'll put it back on the bus. (I turn around to go back to the bus)
Armida Parking Lot Guy: YOU CANNOT POUR THAT BEER INTO YOUR WINE GLASS!
Me: Ummm, I wasn't pouring anything. Heading back to the bus. (I put my beer back on the bus and hop off again)
Armida Parking Lot Guy: Thanks! (Sarcastically)
Me: (Gives thumbs up sign with cheesy smile)
Armida Parking Lot Guy: NICE ATTITUDE! (Very Sarcastically)
Then! and here is the kicker, under his breath, Armida Parking Lot Guy says something along the lines of "something, something......F*cker!!!...."
As he stormed off toward the front door of the tasting room, I yelled, "Really, dude?!"
So... Just to be clear, I was not overly intoxicated. I was not confrontational with this guy. This Armida Winery employee was just an a-hole plain and simple.
In reviewing the photos of Armida on Yelp, I almost believe that the Parking Lot Guy was one of the owners Steve or Bruce Cousins. If that's the case, how sad that you would be rude to a large group of guests. If it wasn't one of the owners, there is still no excuse. I will be calling to voice my complaints about the tall white guy in his 60's wearing a 49'ers baseball hat Saturday January 15th, 2011.
In case you are wondering, even after all the BS, I purchased two bottles of Poizon wine. If it tastes as bad as the crappy service, I will be sure to leave an update. -

I had shelled out $2K to take a group of people wine tasting on what turned out to be an EXTREMELY busy day. The tasting room was crowded and people were trying to shuffle around so everybody could get a pour. The staff, in general was rude, but the icing on the cake was when one staff member threatened to call the sheriffs department because I was standing in the "staff only" walkway and I was trespassing by doing that.
While I wish it was an isolated incident, but every time I have been in there the service was terrible!!!
The grounds are cool and bocce ball courts are always fun, but frankly I can find better wine, a better atmosphere and most importantly better service at dozens of other wines in the area. -

It really sucks how much service can downgrade an experience. To start, our sommelier got a little confused with our large group paying and forgot to give someone change. When she looked at us like we were trying to cheat them, my friend actually said "we're good and honest people" - now why would that ever be necessary to say? But alright, so we proceed.. and did she think she was making up for the $10 we jipped her? Because she gave us some stingy pours!! Seriously, it was like HALF an ounce, it was hardly two sips.. There were 6-7 wines in the flight and I don't think those pours equaled one glass. Looking around, we noticed other parties were getting significantly larger pours, like a more standard 2 oz.. And the wine was just okay. The grounds are very nice. The lunch was good. That second star is a little bit of a stretch.

This place is the opposite of pretentious wine tasting stereotypes.
Armida is a small winery with a big reputation and it doesn't disappoint. The vibe here is great. CJ has been my pourer each time I visit and you can tell he really enjoys his job.
They are known for their Zin's and their Poizin especially. They are cute bottles with every color possible. The package is great and the wine is good too, which I'm sure half the people that buy the wine care about.
Heaven and hell parties are great too! -

Great place with smashing wine and cool logo. Just a little too warm in the tasting room. Beautiful deck with view for picnicking. I think their Bacigalupi Pinot Noir is better than Matrix's Bacigalupi Pinot Noir.

So, you know in the movie Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle (a truly excellent movie that you must rent and you can borrow from me if I like you) how they have those group of white guys who torment H & K and are all "EXTREME" and always listening to Limp Bizkit and talking about snowboarding and other "EXTREME" activities but it turns out they're just a bunch of poseurs who like Wilson Philips?
They're what I was reminded of when I was in Armida with their "rock and roll" image and casket box for the Poizon wine and rhinestone thongs and all of this other fake "EXTREME" stuff. You're a winery, dudes. Let's be real here. The only problem is that Poizon is actually a super wonderful wine that I would completely drink again. So, I don't know. I'm conflicted. 4 stars it is. -

3 stars for the view and outdoor patio. But lost 2 stars due to the owner and tacky marketing.
The plan was to celebrate a friend's birthday on a wine tour with good company and a glass of pinot. Everything was going great: beautiful weather, happy buzz, and ready to eat. Our group stopped at Armida for lunch since our tour was almost over and it had the best view. The patio overlooks the pond and there was a bocce ball..uh..area? (My first time playing. quite fun actually)
We pulled out a bottle of wine to drink with our meal; a bottle that wasn't from Armida. Problem was, we didn't know its a big no-no to have alcohol from one winery on the premises of another. A young woman informed of this and so we placed our bottle back in the bag on the floor next to us and proceeded to scarf down our sandwiches. A good 10 minutes pass until a fake-n-baked man in a polo and shorts came stomping over and reached in our bag for the wine. WTF?! "That's ours buddy!" yelled my friend. He whipped around to yell in response, "No way am I loosing my license over you!" A bit of pushing and shoving went on. He threatened to pour out the full bottle of merlot and went around the back of the building. What just happened?!
Turns out he was the owner of the winery and was extremely unhappy to hear we had a bottle of non-Poizin wine on his property. Within a matter of minutes he reappeared with a bat in hand!!
EXTREMELY UNCALLED FOR.
For what we've done, he should not have been carrying a weapon and threatening us.
After we cleared up some facts and misunderstandings he was an ok guy I guess. But talk about overreacting! He could have done a little more to show his apologies rather than just a handshake.
My second vice about this place is the marketing. "Poizin"?! Coffin boxes?! Pink gliterry labeling?! PIrates?!?!
Oh lordy. Yeah that's classy. -

Go for the view, not the wine.
Amazing views of the valley with an expansive deck to sit out on. Bring lunch and a cold bottle of white on a nice warm day sit back and relax while starring out across the gorgeous valley.
When I was told to go here I was warned that there was a strong likelihood of running into a bachelorette party or some frat guys. Luckily we didn't find either, but we did find some sub par wine.
There was a free tasting and a $10 tasting. Would never head back -

I came here this past weekend to celebrate my 25th birthday with friends. I had been in the past and remembered the benches and great views. After my experience here, I will not be coming back due to the RUDE SERVICE. It was absolute bullshit, esp. considering that their wine is sub-par and the bottles/packaging looks like the same geniuses who created Ed Hardy are behind their marketing/design team.
We had a group of 12 and we were willing to pay the $10 fee for 6 tastings each. After handing him $120, we were ignored after the first pour. Instead, our dude and the other woman (miserable and whispery) chose to completely ignore us and do things like clean out glasses instead. We decided to leave after the third pour and skip out on the last three. The only time we were able to get the lady's attention was when my friend had to practically scream I WANT TO BUY THIS BOTTLE (holding up money and pointing at register). Once she saw the dollars come out, she was less bitchy.
The only thing this place has going for it is the view. We went to Hop Kiln next and they were AMAZING. Unlike Armida, they weren't snobs and they knew how to treat people. They had a prettier winery and far better wine.

Armida is hands-down our favorite winery/tasting room on the Russian River trail. I am a huge fan of their Zinfandels - especially their reserve PoiZin, which comes in beautifully etched bottle inside a little coffin (see pictures). Truth be known, I would have bought the PoiZin for the bottle/coffin alone, but the wine is actually as fantastic as the packaging.
Adjacent to the tasting room is a large patio with tables and chair, and a gorgeous view (great for enjoying a picnic-style lunch and a bottle of wine on a sunny day) and a bocce ball court. -

Worst wine we have ever drank. This place is nothing but marketing and it seems to work on the midwesterners who couldn't tell wine from a glass full of turpentine. We had a few friends in town from LA for a weekend up at the river in a VRBO and we stopped here...we literally had to dare each other to try the next varietal.

Terrible.
Maybe they stored their wine incorrectly or something; but everything had a nasy aftertaste to it. There were four of us and we didn't even bother finishing the tasting because it was so awful.
And I really, really wanted to like it here too because the marketing is awesome (Skull & Crossbones, coffins, loud music...). Maybe they should put more effort into, I don't know..MAKING WINE!!Listed in: Wine Tasting

That one star is for the view.
We did the reserve tastings, I shudder to think of what the regular tasting must have been like. These wines were all pretty bad, and completely overpriced for what they were.
Unpretentious? If you want unpretentious try Roshambo in Sonoma, or Bonny Doon in Santa Cruz. This place was just tacky. Wine called poison in boxes shaped like coffins? Hot pink baby doll t-shirts? Jesus. I completely agree with the review that said it was like a place that sold Harley Merchandise.

Beautiful beautiful view of Healdsburg and the sonoma wine country coast. It is off the beaten path and we got lost several times trying to find this place. The staff was superb handling the numerous cars visiting for barrel tasting.
The grounds are perfect for having picnics with your friends. They make good use of the several terraces with picnic tables and the wine tasting room. They even have bocce ball there!! So, when I arrived, I was a bit drunk from drinking at other wineries, but their Cabernet was delicious. -

Stopped by on Saturday for the first stop of our winery tour for my GFs 30th birthday. Last saturday was perfect as they were having their harvest festival with food and wine tasting. We wanted to stay longer but had apts at other wineries (group of 20 people).
The wine and staff were great. Picked up a bottle of the reserve Poison in pink for my GF.
Will need to go back here soon. -

This was our second stop on a full day of wine tasting. The view is pretty spectacular and the property itself is pretty neat too. The tasting room is in this crazy geometric dome house thing. Sorry if that isn't very descriptive, but I know wine, not architecture!
The tasting room staff is friendly and personable, and thankfully not the least bit pretentious. While we were there we were allowed to taste pretty much anything we wanted. The tasting room staff would inquire what we liked and then would reply "Okay, then you have got to try this!" In addition to the cheerful staff there is a winery cat that hangs out in the tasting room soaking up the sunlight and begging for belly rubs.
Armida is known for Zin. The Poizin is marketed to the max, but if you overlook the glittery bottles you end up with an excellent, full-bodied Zin. They have a couple other Zins that are a little less expensive and well worth the price.
Most surprising was their Antidote; a delightful Pinot Gris that comes in a small cobalt blue bottle. We brought a bottle home to enjoy later. I served the wine with a spicy stir fry and the two complimented each other very well. -

This is by far the worst wine I have ever had. The only thing cool about this place (and maybe a little weird) is the staff has been convinced they are part of a pirate ship crew and the tasting area is decorated like Pirate's of the Caribbean. Actually, I take that back...the only cool thing about this place was the cat they had wondering around. She was way cool.
I did buy a shirt...which I love so if you like thermal shirts with a skull and crossbones insignia...go for it. -

Wines - 4 stars... people 2 stars...
Had a couple decent Zins here and a nice smoky Syrah that we bought a couple bottles of, but wasn't one of my favorite experiences. We had a college kid who poured for us and he tried to be personable and informative, but had a little too much of the used car salesman slickness to him. Was also very unhelpful when asked about shipping options and such. I didn't like the wines enough to go back and put up with the salesman routine. This place just didn't have some of the warmth and love of their craft that we had experienced at many of the smaller wineries. -

went here for one of the barrel tasting weekends. Wow, I felt like I was in the Ed Hardy of wineries. Tacky marketing, all gimicks to get you to drink their terrible wines. When you are choosing a wine based on which color of bottle is cutest, you just need to go by a box of wine at safeway and chill at home. I could appreciate the view but not worth throwing away the cost of a bottle to sit there to picnic. I hope I am never drunk enough to find myself there again.

Nice, relaxed, slightly quirky winery with above average wine.
The tasting was complimentary which i LOVE. The staff was really young and didn't seem too into wine or the winery which was fine. Our pourer wasn't really paying too much attention to us or what she was pouring but she did her job and the wines got into our glasses which was key. I liked the wines but not enough to buy any.
I did buy a really cute pink T-shirt with a skull and crossbones on it though. my friend got some yoga pants with "Poizon" on the butt. -

The only wine I like from Armida is the sauvignon blanc, which is fantastic especially for the under $20.00 a bottle price tag.

Awesome, the most relaxed winery I've ever been to... they have complimentary tastings for the basics and then the optional $10 flight tasting.
Pretty grounds with small lawn that you can lounge on... 1 bocce ball area (crushed oysters)... and deck with tables/chairs for snacking.
Staff is knowledgeable and easy going... they even let us have a tiny tasting of a reserve bottle that was left over from an event they hosted the previous week! (That was amazing... so smooth and easy on the palette). My favourites from Armida were the Poizin and Maple Vineyard Zin and bought 3 of each. YUM!
There were a lot of 20 and 30 somethings here and this winery had a very festive air... if you're with a fun group of friends it's a great spot to end your day. Highly recommended to visit with your friends, can't wait to go back! -

I don't know what it is about this place, but the wines we tasted were 100% earth. It's like drinking dirt in a bottle. Throw us a little fruit Armida. Also, they shorted us on the food when we did the Winter Wineland tour, because that's where we started on day 1.
I'd say the wine there was not really that special, unless you have an aversion to fruit. Maybe French people would like it, because their Pinots tasted like Burgundy and their Syrah tasted like Rhone.
Poizin is your flagship, huh? Not really that impressed. You guys get credit for being Niners fans though. -

Was just here for barrel tasting. It's possible that on other weekends this is a great place, but the glitter skull stickers lead me to believe otherwise. It seemed like most of the people there were underage, which was a little weird, and a lot of the other people there were over 40 and preying on the young people. The wine was definitely not my thing, either. Again, it's possible this was just an off weekend for them in terms of the people and vibe, but I don't think the wine was good enough to warrant a return visit anyway.

Review from William A.
Healdsburg, CA
Intrigued by postings on their Facebook fan site, I went in last Friday to taste and review.
Armida has a good following, so I purposely went in early before it got busy. So much of a winery and tasting room experience can be lost on the (important) tourist crowded weekends, and events. If you are going to have fun, party with friends peak times are fine. If you are wine tasting with intent to experience some of the artisanship and culture, go at off peak times.
(The reviews giving neg stars b/c the winery was busy, or noisy...thats outa their control, gimme a break. And yes, its tacky to drink other wine on the property and other wineries have a similar policy for legal reasons.)
Driving into the parking lot, I see brunette female whizzing around on a forklift....I smile as I think I have glimpsed 'rock star winemaker' Jessica Boone in action. Turns out I have visited Armida before, but back in my first Bay Area stint - ~2002.
Like many small wineries, it can be easy to overlook simple nuances, especially if you are tipsy from tasting, or the wine room is really busy.
Like one of Armida's pinots, layers of complexity exist here, and if you gulp, you can easily miss them. Peeling back a few layers, I feel Armida represents an amazing example of a small but successful Sonoma winery and artisan at work.
Armida is a small winery, production is 10k cases total. To my surprise, and usually against my grain, they have a lot of varietal choices. I normally am a fan of small wineries that focus, but Armida pulls this off because of the organized methods of Jessica, the wine maker, which she touts as Virgo attributes. (More on her in a minute.)
Armida also gets that they need a good marketing presence that isn't cheesy. After all Artisanship or no, if you don't generate income, winery go bye bye! They have done an excellent job with brand awareness for Poizin, their Zin, as well as attract a healthy fan club. The property and views are beautiful. The wine room is well appointed....they sell a few things, but not overly commercial, in my opinion. Sure, I love wineries where the tasting room is nothing more than barrels and a table, but I found nothing offensive here. Whats with the hate for the Poizon packaging.....hellloooo sadly guess what the #1 factor women use in deciding what to buy.....likely this subsidizes other varietals etc. This isn't a charity. It doesn't sell me, but I certainly don't hold it against them.
The gentleman working the tasting room (forgot his name!) was younger, but passionate, friendly, and knowledgeable. Armida has no tasting fee for basic wines. (becoming rare) And all good choices.
They also charge $10 for the premium wines...and worth it. (And I believe fee is refunded with purchase.) They say they are also dog friendly, if leashed and well behaved. (unlike a person who recently brought THREE in and then let them run rampant....poor form!)
The sleeper star of Armida, is Jessica. Named the 'rock star' wine maker, Jessica embodies what I consider the essential elements of Sonoma County, and Armida's wines. She is an old soul, yet young, focused, and attractive (and sorry guys, taken). Non pretentious she zooms around on the forklift, drives to the many grape sites, overseeing a myriad of activities needed to manage small, quality production of a fair # of varietals. Don't make the mistake of judging her experience by her youthful looks - Jessica is passionate, focused, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. Not just on wine, but the ins and outs of the RR Valley.....I have to confess I did a horrid job taking notes on my tasting, as I enjoyed our conversation . This is a winemaker with no airs, pretense, or b.s. She loves her work, jumps into any task, and does it well. I was fortunate to have take over my tasting and pour, share her thoughts with me. My fave...the Pinots, one Zin, and Barbera.
I am sure many other great people labor in support of their wines, but Armida owners should recognize the PR potential of Jessica, and use it to its fullest. In today's Web 2.0, social networking world, Jessica has the potential to help Armida combine old world artisanship with new world marketing. Take advantage of what you have here...
Too much review time on the winemaker instead of the winery...? Maybe, but for me the joy of small wineries are the personalities and stories that drive them. Which is why I enjoy wineries like Mounts, Preston, Talty etc so much, and want to do whatever I can to help others experience them, as well as they be successful.

This winery is up on a hill for a great view of the area. The tasting room staff were information, friendly, and personable. Penny the cat provides a warm furry welcome to anyone interested, too.
