Ahhh I remember the good ole days when Armadillo's used to be Little Hipps a decade ago.

However the only things that's changed has been the name and the decor.  The burgers are still big but good.  The fries, eh they're ok.

We drove by one day thinking there was a small wooden playground outside. By the time we parked and started walking in we learn it was just outside seating. Bummer.

The place that was once Little Hips has the same sort of nostalgia. There are little juke boxes on some booths, they have awesome Texas decorations in every corner and is pretty divey. As long as their food was good you could count me in. That's where the deductions come in. We ordered Armadillo eggs since it appeared to be the only vegetarian friendly item. With crispy corn tortillas topped with Kraft cheddar singles and American singles barely melted with a jalapeno in the center left me feeling pretty underwhelmed. Then the burger came out in plastic baskets and I was pretty much over Armadillos.

The one coolest part of our trip was the Domo toy machine near the bathroom. For fifty cents a toy, I think I blew $8 on that machine by the time we left.

Used go go here when it was Little Hips. Great burgers, solid chalupas. Worth the stop and better than Chris Madrids IMO

Frozen patties and disgusting beans on nachos.

Orders chicken nachos. Brought out just cheese nachos. Said would like chicken nachos, then went in the back and instead of making them correctly they just put a piece of chicken on top.

To make matters worse after I told them we would like the nachos correctly, they still refused and brought is out the same nachos with the chicken cut up on top and by this time the beans were burnt to a crisp.

The tater tots had no seasoning on them at all. Very bland.

    I miss Little Hipps.

Woohoo! I'm so glad I had dinner here!

After putting my dad to work fixing the plumbing in my bathroom, cutting shelves and being the handyman he is, I decided the least I could do in return is buy him dinner. So we drove around town and stumbled on Armadillo's. Many moons ago when I was taking classes at SAC, I had a burger or two here but hadn't been back since. We figured it was worth a shot, mainly because Dad was starving after physical labor all day and well, I didn't do much but give directions, but if he was happy, I was happy.

So, in we go and outside we sat. The inside is cool, but we both love a breezy patio. He's in town from Kentucky, where the sky has been pouring buckets for weeks and is trying to soak up the sun every chance he gets. It was really nice out there last night. Perfect weather, fun music, friendly people, and ice cold beer. I inherited my taste for craft beer from him and sort of regretted not taking him to a place with a cooler drink menu, but we found a few good choices and it was all-around a super fantastic evening with the old man. (We'll see whether he reads my Yelp reviews or not if he comments back on that line... ;-)

Food was yummy, sort of home-cookin' kinda stuff. Burgers, salads with Ranch, nachos, fried catfish, and grilled chicken. I ordered the grilled chicken thinking I was making a healthy choice, but it turns out they make everything extra tasty by way of butter , so while it was delicious, it was likely not easy on my waist line. Oh well. A great night with great company is worth an extra mile or two on the treadmill.

I was looking for a burger place that was not Mcdonalds near downtown, so I gave Armadillo's a try. It took me a while to find parking, because the parking lot was so small and packed. Once I was able to park I thought Armadillos was really dark inside, lit by neon beer and sports signs. I ordered the 1/3 lb bacon cheese burger and tots. I noticed that Armadillos serves 1 1/2 lb and 3 lb burger, but I was not hungry enough for them today maybe next time.

When my burger arrived I noticed that was really greasy, so greasy that it look like a big ball of grease with meat, and cheese. (see pic) I thought the taste was alright, but nothing special. The tater tots were good, and complimented the burger well. The price was good, but I had better better burgers at The Cove and Tycoon Flats. Overall I was not too impressed by Armadillo's. If your looking for a top notch burger you won't find it here 2 Stars.

This is a funky little building that reminds me of a shipping container tower, except it is adorned with decor for a business.

[It was a crisp cool morning during a March summer. We checked out of Hotel Orly ungodly early (for a vacation). I don't even think we grabbed a bite to eat, so I was hungry cranky. We made our way to the train station. I could barely read any signs. There were families and lone travelers, but not many. There was even a man with a crated chicken. I was glad when the train finally arrived for the cabin was comfortably heated. It would be around noon when we arrived at our destination. It was not long before I saw houses unlike anything I've ever seen before. They were small, simple buildings with metal slab roofs. Neighborhood after neighborhood, countryside after another countryside, I kept seeing clapboard houses with slab tin roofs. Life as I understood, was wretched out of my mind, and painstakingly reassembled into something beyond what I can imagine.]

Armadillos certainly does not blend into this sparse San Antonio College neighborhood. It is unabashedly bright blue and orange metal. This 'shipping container' does not have any windows.

We seated ourselves in a booth that was not quite screwed in tightly. There were beers on draft, and lots of bottled ones to choose from. A box TV hangs from a corner while a plasma sits on a wall. A jukebox sits under the TV, but there are also little diner booth jukebox selections at the booth tables.

I hear this is the home of the 3 lb. burger. The award is a t-shirt after a challenger stuffs him/herself fuller than a turkey can hold. Yes, I hear they have bathrooms in case you need to hurl it all out. And no, you will probably never see me in a food challenge, so I ordered the 1/3 lb. Mushroom Burger with tater tots.

[I was trying to sleep one night when I smelled watermelon. Who smells watermelon??? Apparently I do. My nose tends to be freakishly bionic. Weird, I know. So I go downstairs to ask mom and dad if there was watermelon in the house. "Did you have watermelon?" "No, it's in the fridge." And no, my nose is not always this keen.]

Ohhhhhh, Lord! Did I detect rotting trash? Yes. Ugh. Yes, that was the aroma of rotting trash in my tater tots. Apparently, I was the only that can sense that the tot's had been stored within the vicinity of rotting trash. Geez, how would anyone mess up tater tots asides from under-cooking or burning it. Well...

Oh yes, the burger! Yes, it was tasty. Definitely one of the better burgers I've ever paid for. If anyone goes to Armadillos, definitely have something they are known for, and that is a **burger**.

You can get the burgers here as big as 3 pounds, and if you do, you'll feel dirty, cheap, easy and as if covered in cold sweat......smelling like fear........old man fear.......old man fear of dieing. I managed to finish the one and a half pounder and got a free t-shirt out of it, but for the life of me, I will never do anything like that again unless it's to impress my boss or a bet when the prize is a puppy.  A cute puppy, not one of those ugly hairless dogs.  The T-shirt didn't say anything cool like "I ate the one half pounder and survived", but a regular Armadillos shirt. Other than that, not doing it.

Aside from the sin that was the gorging on that burger, they really are good burgers here. they certainly don't taste as if they where just made from ground beef, flour and eggs, but taste as if they added their own special flavor to it. Their special love.....juice or sauce if you will. They are really good and worth it. You will not be disappointed in any of the burgers (just order anything three-quarters pound or below). However.......the sides aren't to appealing and I could probably make better fries out of the fridge. Most of the people I have gone here with all agree, the sides are not tasty. It's not they they're tasteless, or make you want to puke (the one half & 3 pound burgers will have an easy time doing that to you) it's just that they're flavorless and very over shadowed by the burgers. Drinks are big enough and OK.

The ambiance is very Texas and lots of Armadillo references which make it nice. But I would advise anyone who has a phobia to being in closed off places with no windows and no visible outside light coming through to schedule therapy time with your therapist for immediately afterwards, because you will be in a semi-large room with no windows and pretty dark (besides the fluorescent lights which do not show anyone in a favorable light, no pun intended).

So all in all, great burgers, but that's about it. So far the best burgers in town based off the places I've been to. The ambiance is great, except for the fact there is no outside light shining in, so be on the lookout for any runaways from the Twilight cast. The prices are pretty good and not out of this world. So I give it 5 stars for the burgers, but everything else was a let down. If you're in the mood for great burgers, go here, but expect to be disappointed with any side and no view of the street.

Really consistent hamburgers and service.  They have a nice outdoor space and serve beer.  Its a small menu and not high end, but if you're looking for a quick lunch and good hamburger, come.

This has been another one of my favorite lunch spots, and should be held amongst the best burgers in San Antonio.

As seems to be the theme with many of the restaurants in SA and in Texas, bigger is better.  The portions weigh in on the heavy side and the prices are pretty good.   On a hungry day, I would shoot for the 1/2 pound cheeseburger with added avocado and a small side of tater tots (which can be shared by two people), though the 1/4 pound would do just fine.  And if you are feeling really daring, or just have the need to share, you can shoot for the full pound.  I was never that insane.

Other items such as the salads, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches match the goodness found in their burgers and fries. The drinks also match the size of the meal.  Also, definitely try out the armadillo eggs as an appetizer...these are tortilla chips with jalapenos covered with two cheeses on top.

Beyond the food, this place has a genuine Texas country feel.  When you walk in, you feel like you are definitely hitting a country dive, but this is a location frequented by all sorts and is one place that you shouldn't miss!

Armadillo's is a San Antonio favorite of mine. It's everything a burger should be: giant, greasy, and delicious. I always get the 1/3lb bacon cheeseburger. The bacon is always crispy which is key! The staff has always been friendly and quick. They recently added a patio which will be great for summer evenings.

Very cute, TX themed hamburger joint.  They make them old fashioned style and the prices are very reasonable.  I'm craving another one now...
