Great food! Incredibly friendly owner. Fun place!

The Armadillo is my go-to place, hands-down. Friendly staff, reasonable prices, great margaritas (half price on Thursdays), and the best cheeseburger in the USA (order it medium rare with jalapeno mayonnaise on the side.) I'll keep going here until my credit is shot!

Food is great but they have too many "rules". Will only seat you if all of your party is present. If someone comes later then they cannot order food unless they sit at another table. No food is worth those kind of rules.

Not bad, also not impressive. The host forgot us at the bar, but comped us a round of drinks to make up for it. I liked the fresh ingredients, the chips, and the very tasty salsas. Wasn't thrilled by the prices, menu's pretty small.

I first came here about 6 years ago when I was still in high school and was visiting a friend who went to college nearby. I wound up attending the same college about two years later and remembered the incredibility of this restaurant, and henceforth have been going as much as I can. Even now that I have graduated and live in Queens, antyime I am anywhere remotely close to Kintgston, I manage to get to this restaurant . I was staying at the Hudson Valley Spa and Resort about a month ago and drove over an hour one way just to go here.
This is a dining experience that is excellent in every respect. Absolutely astounding food, great owner and staff (my favorite is the attentive bus boy known as "Chippies" for always offering people more of the fresh baked, greasy tortilla delights for which he has coined the term) , strikingly bold decor, and a crowd of returning customers, familiar with each other from coming here so frequently.
One of the more specific reasons to go here is for an appetizer they call queso fondue. This dish is not your average melted cheese, but the most fresh, smooth, pure melted cheese dip seasoned with fresh red and green peppers and served with the delcious chippies. My mouth just watered as I described it!
Really, I can go on and on about this place. But I know no one would ever finish reading all the endless amounts of good things I could say.
Hands down best Mexican food and Mexican food experience I have had! -

Good drinks, fun atmosphere, food is good but not 'slap-yo-momma' good. Popular in the area. A little expensive.

I hadn't been here in a good 15 years (I'm not that old either), so when I was in the area for some random reason, I wanted to check this place out again. Its a solid Mexican restaurant with large patio dining area, and a smaller inside dining room. Its by a river in a residential area, and its definitely off the beaten path. We sat inside because it was too damn hot out. Our server was very good, but my favorite was the old man who acted as a busboy. He was one of those little nice old guys who you don't always understand what he's saying, but he did a great job regardless.
To start, I got a Hurricane Kitty which was okay (brew in Kingston by Keegan Ales); I was kinda pissed they didn't have Mother's Milk which is Keegan Ales bets brew, but w/e. We got guacamole as an appetizer, and they also brought out green salsa, regular salsa, homemade tortilla chips, sliced olives, pickled carrots marinated with jalepenos, something really spicy which I don't remember, and a pico de gallo. The carrots in particular were great, and while the guacamole was very good, it could've used some additional spices. I had the spicy shrimp in a green sauce with rice and beans, which was pretty good. It was a good portion size, and my only issue is that it could had a bit more kick to it. My dad's fish tacos were great though, with a generous amount of fried fish inside.
Overall everyone was very happy with the meal, and we went for a walk on the water afterwards. I almost feel like rating this palce higher, but the main things I was eating (guacamole and shrimp) did need an extra kick. However, after this meal I don't think its gonna take me another 15 years to come back here. I definitely reccomend this place.Listed in: Good Sh*t Upstate

Yumm.. Margaritas! The Burrito I got here tasted fresh, and the Salsa was excellent.
Upstate NY is rarely dog-friendly, but my little Nugget (my dog) is welcome here! Outdoor seating, and if the dog is well-behaved they will let them inside. Nugget thrives on the chicken enchiladas.
Also, the Armadillo is just a stone's-throw away from the strand and the Hudson River. If you want to go for a nice walk on the water, or check out Kingston's nightlife after dinner (don't get too excited), it's just a short walk to Mariner's and the Steele House. -

Best Mexican I've found in the area. Menu options are a little limited, but the food was tasty.
You can tell that there's a real cook involved here, not just bland sauces out of a can.
Overall pretty good, and far above the local competition. -

Competent american-mexican with a few inventive touches. The family that own the place push this review from 3 to 4 stars. Great community feel. The side porch seating is a must do in the fair weather. Good to dog owners, supportive of area dog rescue.

Some of the best mexican food I've had in this area!
And the margaritas are great too!
I crave their hot pickled carrots all the time! -

The Armadillo has a lot going for it. To start off, the tomatillo sauce, salsa, and homemade chips (referred to as "chippies" by the gentleman who has been serving them to tables for at least 10 years) are to die for. Seriously, the tomatillo sauce is heavenly. The margaritas are delicious and potent. They have built a community garden in the empty lot next door, which is great on many levels.
The jalapeno stuffed shrimp are scrumptious. If you are there when they have the pepercorn tuna with a wasabi sause on the specials menu, do not pass it up. Holy schmoly, delicious. Really, I haven't had anything I didn't at least enjoy.
And Merle, the owner, is a pit bull rescuer who loves all dogs, so if you have a well behaved on you can bring it out to dinner with you! -

Armadillo--pretty basic Tex-Mex but I like it. Decent food. It's has a fun, convivial atmosphere. The margaritas are good. It's a little out of the way so we don't go much, but if it was in my 'hood we'd be regulars.

The BEST local scene for years! Huge selection of tequilas! ALWAYS order the Tuna (rare) when they have it! The salsas they serve with the chips are fresh and you will go thru them fast! Myrle is the perfect hostess and mother of the city! Thursday nights can get noisy because of the frozen Margarita special, (but who drinks those when you have all the wonderful tequilas)?! the best!

Very good Tex-Mex. Best mexican I've had locally, though that isn't saying much. Will go again.

I love dining at Armadillo. The margaritas are fantastic, and the tamales are super yummy. The owner is always nice and accommodating, and I she's a great fixture in the community. The entrees do tend to have slightly too much cheese, but that's the only downside of eating here. Always fun!

I love tex-mex but wifey hates it. So I asked her to take me here on my birthday. I think it's the best tex-mex around. I had a huge and tasty chicken burrito, while wifey had the fajitas, which she also enjoyed. Prices are reasonable and service is good. They have a frequent guest card which gives you discounts.

This place is great, nice cozy atmosphere, can get crowded on friday or saturday night but the food and atmosphere is so worth it.

I used to really like this place, but lately have been disappointed.
The pros: outdoor dining area allows dogs, good selection of veggie options, great condiments
The cons: wait staff rushes you to finish & leave, sometimes that food is great & other times it's just OK. I was with a big group of friends -- we had reservations for 10, they set up a table for 12, and we had 11 people show up. Then the owner berated us for having fewer people than we had reserved for! -

I liked Armadillo's both times I've eaten there. Friendly service, good food, reasonable prices. What's not to like?

As a Californian who is used to good Mexican food I had almost given up on finding good Mexican food in NY. However Armadillo's is an excellent Mexican food restaurant. It is very delicious even though it is a lot pricier than CA it is definitely worth it! They have an excellent variety of margaritas and excellent food with good size portions! Oh yeah, the ambience is very charming and inviting, and the service is great!

Love this place! Very friendly & inviting staff. Great margaritas, lovely outdoor patio seating and good food. Some of my favorites are the shrimp stuffed jalapenos, calamari and Texas size burger!
