Review from Kevin M.
Minneapolis, MN
The girlfriend and I were just coming off a ghost town hunt, and it was getting late. We figured we didn't have time to cross into Mexico, so we were just heading back to the freeway on AZ 82. We saw signs for this place and their free tasting, so we thought we'd stop in on a lark.
Wow.
We went in to the front room, which is some kind of weird shrine to the art of wine-making over the thirty years that they've been here, and through the hanging plastic slats into the tasting room. Several men were sitting around the fireplace chatting, and one of them welcomed us and sent the other two out on errands.
We expected a couple 1-2 oz pours and a sales pitch. What we got was the owner, Tino, offering us half-glasses of damn near all their 18 wines. He talked our ears off about his travels through European wine regions, his thirty years in Nogales, and the weather in our native Minnesota.
The white burgundy was my girlfriend's favorite, and she got a bottle of the Sauterne (cross-polinated with pears - nice interesting flavor) for her mother. My picks were the Rattlesnake Red - a tasty, semi-dry table red similar to a shiraz, and the Ocheltree Red which is an Italian style red that I would love to have had with the spicy beef and pasta I had for dinner last night.
I was expecting some of the super-sweet berry wines you often find in places not known for their grape harvest, but what I got was some really decent table wines and unrivaled banter as Tino hung out with us and was tending to plans for some kind of catered event with his employees at the same time. If you go, he will take care of you, but don't plan on driving for a while. The man is a master of conversation under a shock of steel-wool hair, has a heavy pouring hand, and he knows a little something about wine, too. It's a great way to spend a lazy Arizona afternoon. -
