Review from Jim A.
I really love the baked goods at Arizmendi Bakery. I make it a stop when I'm in town it is so good.
Sometimes the bread or scone of the day are hit or miss, but more often than not, it is an inventive and flavorful creation. The cherry chocolate sourdough sounded amazing, but I went for the almond joy scone and cornbread blueberry muffin on my most recent visit. The scone wasn't well labeled, so I didn't realize what it was until later when my hairdresser noted he dislike. I hate cocoanut, but it was still a good scone. The muffin was outstanding, crumbly and moist, with plump, tasty blueberries.
Go check out this bakery any time of day for some great eats, I bet their more substantive food is great too. -

I dig this place. I like their daily pizza. Because they only make one type daily, I don't have to decide! It has been delicious every time I've tried it.
I also like that they feature different specialty breads throughout the week. I have yet to try many of their pastries, but I am looking forward to it.
Great location, friendly staff (especially Matt), and scrumptious baked goods. I will continue to support this place. Check it out for yourself! -

i know they have one of these bakeries in oakland or berkeley (closer to my home) yet ive never been to that location.
first and only time here was on my birthday. i had some time to kill before a morning appointment. treated myself to a lemon poppy seed muffin. it was gluten free might i add and still delicious, surprisingly enough. and (no im not done) i couldn't not get the almond wedding cookie. that was good as well. so worth cleaning off the cocaine-like powder off your body haha. those two bday treats went very will with my iced latte.
truthfully, i would like to try every single thing they offered in those pastry cabinets. they had different kinds of scones, muffins, croissants, cookies, you name it.
theyre also famous for their breads, which i believe they make a different kind everyday aside from their usuals of course. i think they also make pizza! gonna come back for more goodies someday. -

Chocolate chip cookie hunt continues...
Arizmendi makes a solid CCC for $2. It's slightly thick, crunchy on the edge, soft in the middle but not that chewy. The chocolate was good but I thought the "cookie" part was missing something, maybe salt. When I plucked it out of the display case, it still felt warm, which is always a plus!
There is actually an Arizmendi down the street from me in Emeryville, another in Oakland, and another in SF. Fresh cookies within walking distance? Nothing like justifying your sweet tooth by walking from your house to get yourself a cookie, right?Listed in: Chocolate Chip Cookie Hunt

Review from Eric B.
The Arizmendi Bakery Cooperative is named after Father José María Arizmendiarrieta Madariaga who was a Catholic priest and founder of the Mondragón cooperative movement in the Basque Country. He is revered in his adopted town and around the world by activists for proving that co-ops can be effective businesses and transform local communities.
Counting the Cheeseboard, there are 6 sister cooperative bakeries in Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, San Rafael, and San Francisco. Except for SF, I've visited them all and am always pleased to find my favourite corn cherry scones or a slice of socialist pizza (1 style per day - take it or leave it). Although the styles are similar, each Arizmendi shop has it's own unique energy and clientele. This Marin location actually seems out of place with its Downtown San Rafael surroundings, but like the Bagel/Bialy place down the street, I could easily get used to it. And this tasty Arizmendi pecan roll is sure helping me write reviews this morning! -

I'm a fan of Arizmendi and have been for years. I stumbled upon the co-op bakery in Emeryville and since then, I've been a fan of each and every location.
I thought I would pick up some breakfast type pastries and grabbed the daily *special* ~ some moist and flaky Nectarine Scones and a Cinnamon Bun. I also grabbed a cheesy sourdough bread stick, but that didn't even make it outside the door before it was gone. *POOF*
My mom marveled at the prices and tried to shoo me out of the bakery. I assured her that it would all be worth every carb and she would just have to take my word for it. ;) Sometimes your kids have good ideas too.
So we waited a whole day to rip into those pastries and it was worth it. She said it was the best scone she ever had and I had to agree with her. She never had a scone so moist and flavorful. Yeah, that's what they are supposed to taste like.
So, I got to take credit for introducing her to Arizmendi - but the real prize are the goodies inside the bakery bag. Mmmm.Listed in: Crazy about Coffee

New York, NY
My local Bay Area friends quickly schooled me on how Arizmendi is THE bakery for the Bay Area and that it actually has multiple locations. This co-op bakery in San Rafael is airy, clean, adds a bit of that indie/hipster vibe to what is otherwise a boring yuppie town (San Rafael).
Arizmendi has some super tasty baked goods. Savory and sweet, I can recommend them all (although the pizza is a little bit oily). I only wish their coffee was a bit better, but the quality of the pastries is superb. Metered street parking here. -
Review from Toni M.
On the way home from Petaluma today I had planned to stop at a tailor whom I had bookmarked to get a top altered that was too large. My tailor in Berkeley had closed and San Rafael is almost as close as downtown Berkeley. It occurred to me that I could also swing by Arizmendi and check whether they made bialys. Well, Arizmendi was just around the corner and a couple of blocks down. I couldn't find street parking but there's a free lot close by, so I parked there.
I walked in and they have several comfortable looking tables and chairs where people could sit and eat and some folks were doing just that. The bins were full of baked goodies. They did make bialys, so I took two. They looked a little bigger than the ones from the Valencia Street location, but they looked and smelled good. In addition, I picked up a chocolate thing, a cherry/corn scone, a blueberry/corn muffin and a cheese roll. Every time I opened the door to a bin I was hit by another fresh and lovely smell. The woman who helped me was friendly and I was glad I had stopped by. Aside from the bridge toll, it's a lot easier to get to San Rafael than to Emeryville, although Emeryville will probably remain our go-to Arizmendi location. -
Review from Katie W.
Ok, this is, in fact bordering on an obsession.
The only reason it is bordering is that I live 45 minutes from the bakery. Excuse me, THE Bakery. My newest loves? Well, let's start at the very beginning. A very good place to start.
Came in for a signature phenomenal bread loaf. Then I saw it. The Bran Muffin. Oh yes, Muffin's most hated Goodie Two Shoes Uptight Prudent Step Sister. But this muffin is so good, it TASTES like decadence. Moist, molassesy great with toasted walnuts throughout. Both golden and regular raisins that are so bug and plump, you would swear they were not raisins at all but some sort of baby prune in size. The crust on the top is not only slightly crunchy and tastes of caramelized wonder - my favorite part, but since there is no paper associated with this here muffin, the sides and bottom boast this quality as well. Genius.
Foccacia. Walnut Gorgonzola Arugula. This is no wimpy soggy foccacia. It is crisp and crunchy on the bottom with cornmeal. It has the telltale foccacia chew and this one also has a lovely, less crunchy top crust. That is, the parts that are not covered in the blend mentioned above. A concoction of culinary inspiration, this is not to be missed. Unless, you are in the mood for a more traditional taste - the tomato and peppers foccacia. Cheese and the veg on top melt together to form a mixture of flavorful cheesy peppery tomato on that same crunchy, chewy crust. Good.
But, the Piece de Resistance? Those fucking cheese rolls. I would say pardon my language, but there is just no other word for it. The dough is the epitome of doughs. It is light, it is crunchy, it is moist and chewy inside - it is a Miracle dough that I hope, should I get the blessing of being ushered in, I will be eating every day - perhaps hour up in Heaven. And that's just the dough. The cheese adds that salty greatness and infuses into the dough in such a way that they become one, really. Fucking Awesome. Ridiculous, in fact, in it's sheer scrumptivity.
So, here I am, bordering on my borderline obsession - perhaps even teetering, as I write into Full Blown Arizmendi Addict.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Good vibe in here - reminds me of my college days, studying, drinking lots of coffee, KALX on my stereo... though the gal behind me in line was a wee bit jumpy.
The baked treats are set up "self-serve" style and you pay at the counter. Since I didn't see any croissants, I tried a "Chocolate Thing" and a scone. The "thing" was really good - more like a fresh yummy roll with quality chocolate on top. The scone was really really good - they just got it right!
I'll have to go back for sure - and try the other goods. Two thumbs up for being employee owned. -

Fantasizing about shucking the corporate gig to spend all day apron-clad and elbow deep in yeasty dough, pulling apart hot buns...
This is what Arizmendi had me doing before I even walked in the place. I was compellingly intrigued by the sign in the window: They're hiring workers at $12/hour but only those committed to becoming owners in six months. At that point, you must make a $500 investment towards an eventual $5,000 investment into shared ownership of the bakery. The remainder of the investment can be made through payroll deductions.
I love this concept. Imagine a work-world that didn't involve slaving away on meaningless projects that are so complex you feel your brain scrambling into confetti. Just you and the dough and the customers. I like.
Even more, I liked the honkin' cheese-stuffed cheese roll I bought. It was chewy and filling and kind of delicious if you like cheese that's been baked and then hardened up again (which I do).
I like what they've got going on here at this little worker-owned collective. -

The smell that hits you when you walk in is soo good. Good sign.
I didn't know that bran muffins could taste so good. They pack them full of nuts and raisins. Oh, and they have this olive bread that's also amazing....
The pizza is also soo good, made with fresh ingredients. Just a heads up about the pizza- check out their website for the pizza of the day, and keep in mind that they don't make pizza on Sundays.
*Note how many times I've written "so good." -

Just before leaving SF to move to MV, I was bemoaning the lack of a serious, small-business bakery in Marin. Imagine my surprise and delight, then, when I came upon the Arizmendi in SR, on my way from changing my name at the Social Security office (I should yelp them--they were surprisingly efficient and cheerful for a govt office). Anyhoo . . Where was I? Ah, yes, English muffins. I stopped in, barely containing my happy dance, and promptly bought a bushel (or so) of their famous English muffins--chewy, strarchy, sour, complex--and shamelessly ate 2 straight away in my car.
These were not the E.M.s of the 9th Avenue or Valencia Arizmendis. These were flat, bland, and lacking that lovely, crusty-chewy layered, nook-and-cranny goodness. Boo. I'll be back, of course, 'cause I loves me a co-op & believe in 2nd chances, but am not in any big hurry. Please try harder, new little Arizmendi! -
Review from Joe M.
An Arizmendi had (sort of) recently opened in downtown San Rafael and I had such a nice experience at the San Francisco one that I had to drop in for some pastries. They have a slightly different selection of treats here so my friend and I decided to share a few bites.
I ordered the cheese roll and she got the apple cinnamon scone. The cheese roll was very tasty and chewy and the scone was quite moist. Even the apples had a good amount of juiciness to them and it had a great balance of flavors.
There are many things on the menu that I'd love to try at Arizmendi and I will definitely be back with an empty stomach and my laptop (free WiFi!) and spend some time working from here. They've got dog-friendly tables outside and I can't wait to come back!

I *heart* this bakery, I used to feel like I was cheating on my other favorite SR bakery, Bordanaves by eating here but I got over it.
The pizza is amazing, when I take my toddler nephew they always cut an extra slice for him or offer him a sample, plenty of space to navigate the stroller and nowhere near the level of 'tude as the SF locations.
These are people who bake bread because they love it, not because it's suddenly hip for boys who wear skinny jean to post "bread porn" on their facebook pages.
SF should follow their lead. -

There is not one bad thing you can say about this place - if anything, there's too much to rave about!
Service - Everyone I've ever dealt with there on the phone or in person has been SUPER friendly and focused on making me a happy customer. It's genuine friendliness with a smile. How often can you say that about customer service these days??? Not often enough. Most of the time, you're lucky to have someone acknowledge you.
Food - I've had their scones, cookies, bread, pecan rolls, pizza, you name it. All AWESOME! I even had their chocolate chip cookie literally minutes out of the oven. The ooey gooey chocolate chips and crispy edges were even more delicious than one would think possible.
If you're counting calories, trust me when I say that these are worth every extra minute on the treadmill! -

San Rafael, CA
I so wished this was going to be like the Arizmendi on on 9th ave in the city! I've tried and tried to love it but there is still some work these folks need to do to get there. Their breads are overly dense and unevenly proofed, their scones are leaden and their pastries are stiff.
I must say although they are not as creative in their pizzas as 9th ave or the cheese board they have improved immensely since the beginning. I still believe they need to up the flavor impact to make them really sing though.
If it were not for the pizza improvement I would be giving only two stars today.
I will be more then happy to update my stars at some future date if they buck up and use a little more finesse in their baking skills. -
Review from JP H.
Wilmington, DE
I've grown to love this branch of Arizmendi over the past year or so. There's a persistent feeling of energy and creativity in this place... maybe it is all the light coming through the windows, the workers who seem genuinely happy to be there, or its strategic and convenient location in the heart of San Rafael.
Best bets are generally the Scone of the Day or Pizza of the Day. Often, the combo or choice may be atypical. For the pizza, this could mean artichokes and/or Gorgonzola cheese. With the scone, it could be something like what I saw today, which was Nectarine Ginger.
Drinks don't seem to be as much of a specialty, but they manage to keep prices reasonable, with mochas in particular being a good $1 less than the folks at Peets.

It's good to have an elephant's memory sometimes.
Yesterday, for a quick lunch, I stopped in with my mom and sis. It was 11:25. And you know what happens at 11:30 right?
Those in the know (and from previous conditioning experiences) know their beloved pizza starts being served. Today, it was a delicious mixture of veggies-zucchini, leeks, thyme, and Parmesan cheese on a crispy thin crust! Not bad for $2.50. And my funny mom (see the review on The House), asked if they sold...diet Coke. Gotta love her.
And to go: a couple of those lovely Chocolate Things that make my heart sing. It's good to remember! -

Just went here for the first time. Had a 'chocolate thing', corn-blueberry muffin, some fresh cilantro-onion focaccia bread, pecan roll and a double expresso.
The corn-blueberry muffin was ridiculously good. My only complaint was that they forgot to take my toasted treats out of the toaster, and it was just a tad too toasted (not much by any means).
I can't wait to go back and try the pizza -- seems like it would be incredible.
The espresso was really good also, apparently it's roasted fresh in San Rafael, forgot the name of the brand tho. -

I love the idea of a worker-owned business! And a business that embraces quality, seasonal ingredients and consistently kick-ass service and DELICIOUS food. My favorites are the coconut scones on Monday! But I am always up for a delicious corn cherry scone, oat or currant scone. And of course, the pizza is fantastic.

I'm a regular and I absolutely love the corn blueberry muffin. I'm also a huge fan of the "Focaccia of the Day". The pizza is good but kinda pricey. The people are super nice and I'm stoked to be going there, knowing it's employee owned!
There have been MANY places that have tried to survive there, and so far this is the only one that has. I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon! :) -

The Carbivore's Dilemma:
Should I eat some of Arizmendi's luscious breakfast pastries or skip them in an attempt to have a ready-for-bikini weather bod?
When I bit into their huge Apple and Rhubarb scone, I knew I had made the right decision. Buttery, flaky, and huge it will fully satisfy all your carb cravings. More fruit would have made it scone perfection ($2.50). The Chocolate Thing was filled with lots of dark chocolate things which of course I liked. I wished the brioche part of it was a lighter and more eggy but that didn't stop me from gobbling it up ($2.25).
A cup of Equator coffee will go nicely with your carb of choice ($1.50 for a medium cup). On a recent visit, they ran out of coffee and we waited a long time for the new pot. Breakfast party foul! Happily, the frazzled gal at the counter apologetically smoothed things over with a complimentary Kookie Brittle ($2). This kookie was chewy, crisp and chock full of butter, almonds, and dark chocolate chunks.

OMG. I am a bread addict and this place is my "bread crack". I am so happy they have arrived in San Rafael... I stopped today and pick up a few of my fave's and just totally enjoyed every little bite. Nothing to see here.. no crumbs for you.
The staff is wonderful which only makes it harder for me to kick my addiction. Dang... Oh well, now I guess it is time for me to join the Loop next door and be one with my addiction. -

The wonderful smell emanating from this place DRAGGED me in. The plethora of breads, scones, cookies, pizza, etc. kept me in the store for far too long. I couldn't escape without buying 2 carbohydrate delights I really didn't need, and I was lucky to make it out with just two!
Plenty of organic ingredients, a nice selection of organic drinks, and more sublimely tasty goodies than your fat pants can handle. (Please note: Gym directly across the street.)
And if none of that gets you, then how about this: Employee owned! Nothing better than asking the guy behind the register, "Is this your place?" and hearing "Well, yes, it's all of ours'!"
I'll definitely be back. The only reason it lost any stars was that it seemed to lack the cozy atmosphere that I look for in a place where I'd want to sit and eat and stay for a while. -

Finally! An Arizmendi in SR. I remember walking to my local Arizmendi when I lived in SF and I fell in love with their Cinnamon Raisin Brioche. I had the chance to experience that once again when I stopped by the bakery during their opening week and it's just as wonderful as I remember it!

Everything at Arizmendi is YUM TASTIC! Good thing there's a gym next door...
Pizza of the day today was truly a treat - zuccini and yellow squash with feta and pesto, cooked to perfection with lots of melty yummy cheese. A perfect lunch, and all those baked goods were calling - nay, SCREAMING - my name from their cases, begging to be taken home. I love everything about how this business is run, from the worker-owned cooperative to the friendly workers and extremely high quality goods they turn out day after day. Oh, Robyne G. I was totally singing your song before I logged on to write my review. You absolutely got it right though, so here it is again:
"Yummy yummy yummy. I've got love in my tummy!" There isn't a way to describe the love affair I have with bread. It's just down right dirty & gluttonous. I gorge myself daily & now I have a new place to help me indulge.
The pizza crust is to die for. Of course, I rarely meet a sourdough I don't love at first taste. Try not to eat it all (you'll have to try very hard!) & I swear it makes the best breakfast topped with an egg. The last I had was potato, leek & olive & the two slices left over made for an amazing breakfast sandwich with a couple fried eggs in the middle.

The pizza is so good, it makes you forget that it's vegetarian! It's always made with fresh ingredients and they always give you a little baby slice with your normal slice, which is kind of random, but a nice touch. Other must-tries include the the Foccacia of the Day, and the Vegan Chocolate Mint Cookie...mmmmm

Gosh, I like this place. I know it's bad to eat pizza 3 times a week but I crave the thin crust slices in my sleep. I especially like the goat cheese, fennel pizza. At $2.50a slice you can't beat this quick lunch. They also have internet access.
The baked goods are sublime. Arizmendi is becoming very popular. Each time I go in I notice the busy lines bakery lovers. The staff is efficient handling the sometimes long lines but it's well worth the 5 minutes of people watching. -

Okay, so my boyfriend took me here for the first time on Monday. We got a whole Pizza to share while out on an adventure exploring Marin and Sonoma counties. The pizza was delicious, the crust was perfect. I believe it had basil, tomatoes, and blue cheese. I had never had blue cheese on a pizza before, but it was so good. When it was hot and fresh out of the oven, I believe I could have eaten the whole pie by myself. However, we put the pizza in the car and went to Cold Stone next door, when we came back the pizza had cooled off and the cheese was a little rubbery, but still really good. I would recommend pizza of the day and eating it piping hot. I don't know about any of there other stuff but it looked good and smelled good. They also offered Vegan and Gluten Free stuff on their menu. Anyway, will probably be back next time I'm in town.
