BEST PUMPKIN BREAD EVER!!! Even tops (***GASP***) Bakesale Betty's Pumpkin Bread.
And I never EVER thought I'd EVER say that.
The staff is awesome here! Attempted to nab some last minute items just as the folks there were shutting down for the evening. Regardless of how long their day had been, each and every person there was SO nice and patiently suggested, explained and served up gourmet goodies!
I made out like a bandit with a bags full of bread, various rolls AND half a butternut squash themed pizza-pie. To top it all off, one of the gals plopped a tub of lemon curd for me to sample.
HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!?!?!?
Zampanos and focaccias are an excellent choice for the morning or afternoon snack. I love how they rotate the flavors and selections daily. My only problem is that I have to microwave them before I eat them. Otherwise, their pretty cold, hard, and chewy.
The pizza is pretty good. I can't say it's one of the best I've ever had but decent in quality and taste. The teas and espresso drinks are also mediocre at best in this location.
I really like the crew here and wished I can give them more stars but the quality of their pastries and drinks just weren't up to par.
I went into Arizmendi to grab a pastry or small bite of some sort and ended up getting pizza instead because it looked so damn good. I think it was a mushroom, spinach and goat cheese pizza. Regardless, it was fantastic and I inhaled it in about 2 minutes. I was supposed to be doing exercise shortly so I stopped myself from a 2nd slice but every other bone in my body was yelling, "more pizzzzzza more pizzzzzzza." I think that it's the sourdough crust that I like best but the toppings were also pretty fantastic.
I also grabbed a chocolate chip cookie for the road and that too was fantastic. It was overloaded with chocolate and had the just-right amount of chewiness that I look for in cookies (unless it's a coffee dunking cookie, which has a whole other set of qualifications).
Next time I'm in the area, I'll be sure to swing by to see what their pizza of the day is.
Bonus for being a co-op business.
Co-op gourmet pizza...mmm... sister to the Cheese Board.
If you have dietary restrictions, this pizza is not for you. Everyday, Arizmendi features a different "pizza of the day." You can call ahead and hear the feature on a recorded message, or just stop by and trust that whatever they make will be good. If you are picky, call first.
I eat pizza here at least every other week-- I just can't get enough of that sourdough crust and the gooey spreads they paste on last minute i.e pesto, goat cheese, balsamic...
I am an old friend of Lakeshore's Arizmendi, and this one strikes me as a little more put together on the outside and a little scruffier on the inside. Same excellent food products. I like the patio option for enjoying a slice.
Ok everyone loves this place so let me just mention a couple of things management could definitely improve on. I'm not knocking them, I'm there every morning for the blueberry corn muffins and coffee. But:
1) The place is filthy. Wipe the counters down for god's sake.
2) This morning they had a brand new guy on the register, a line out the door, and nobody showing any interest in opening a second register.
3) They simply refuse to put labels on the milk. You have to squint your eyes to figure out whether the canisters are marked soy or half and half or low fat. Why is this? I can't imagine.
In short, it's a co-op and it reminds me of what it must have been like to live in the Soviet Union during its day of decline. They do their jobs but at some level, there's a lack of attention to the customer experience that I find very frustrating.
Like I say, it's a great place and I'm happy they're in the neighborhood. But if they wiped down the milk and napkin counter once in a while, and occasionally opened a second register when the line's out the door, it would be a lot better.
I am in love with you everytime I walk in this bakery!!!
damn I love their pizza.. not all of them, but their pizza is so damn good, so good I wouldn't mind getting proposed to with their pie and a nice david yurman hahahha.... and their baked goods are so reasonably priced and tasty I wished they had these all over the bay area, and seattle!!!!!
fyi: go check out their website to see what their pizza of the day is.... !!!
Ugh.... I used to live right across the street from Arizmendi and it was DANGEROUS! I'm fitting into my jeans better now that I've been away for a little bit but my tummy misses you Arizmendi. I used to get either the strawberry scone, bran muffin, corn raspberry muffin, zucchini muffin or their chocolate thing (brioche with chocolate pieces in it). Not to mention this brioche bun thing with cinnamon & golden raisins.
You can probably tell I used to rely on Arizmendi to make my breakfast for me. I've tried almost everything on the menu except for the breads & pizza. So I guess I really have the down low on Breakfast. As far as the caffeinated drinks go they do Double Cappucino's right and the house coffee ain't bad. However the mexican mocha + chai tea is horrible.
This place is really busy around breakfast and sometimes they have new staff that slow things down. You can place a special order for the holidays if you don't have time to cook.
Oh my ........
Arizmendi
Thank goodness you are not in LA..... my hips and thighs and flat tummy thank you for not being accessible to me or I would eat you 3-4 days a week.
I love this place. Today I had one of the best (better than Mozza) slice's of pizza ever.... in all my years of living. Beautiful light spread of cheese, perfect amount of thinly sliced red onion, tasty- organic tomatoes and drizzled balsamic.......
I'm such an indulger. I sat and inhaled the first slice. Then I ordered a second slice and ate it slowly.......
The best vegan mint and carob cookie and super tasty coffee...............
I'm having a food orgasmic day!
Without you, Arizmendi, I would fall asleep at work.
Thank you for having good coffee.
Without you, Arizmendi, I would not eat breakfast.
Thank you for the assortment of baked goods.
Without you, Arizmendi, I would not have anywhere to go during my break.
Thank you for being so close to work.
Without you, Arizmendi, I would be in shape.
F**k you for being so good that I eat muffins and pizza all day!
Since moving to Emeryville last November I have dropped in a few times after making my deposits at the BofA across the street. I am a big Co-op fan and after hearing that they donate day-olds to a nonprofit I work with (SAGE SF).. even bigger fan.
Their baked goods are very good. Not the best ever, but yummy and ethical. The one time I ordered a latte it wasn't very good, but drinkable. I'm excited to try their pizza. Their dessert rolls are delicious.
Lovely breads, baked goods.....
I had just finished meeting up with a new friend at Pt. Isabel with my dog and his pup and have to admit, the brusque wind and coldness had sapped the moisture from my face and left me with slightly flushed. It was with this flushed look that I arrived back to my car to find it firmly ensconced between two CHP patrol cars, the officers taking a break and chatting about ticketing. I secretly have a crush for men in uniform, mmmm.
Since San Pablo was starting to jam up like no tomorrow, I pulled into Arizmendi for a quick caffeine boost. I love their baked goods. So fresh and never dry. I looked around and found the perfect item to tide me over until after the lecture (my friend and I usually have dinner after such outings) : two oatmeal cookies, priced conveniently at $1.50 each. I made sure to grab one for my friend since he was driving.
I was in line at 5:30 and out by 5:45. Service is quick and the baristas pretty warm and smiley. Just the kind of customer service that makes you leave feeling good and made even warmer with a sip from the extra hot breve latte. Strong........it kicked me back into gear and ready for my 3 hour lecture for the evening. In addition to baked goods, they offer light sandwiches as well as slices/whole pizzas, baked and warmed right on the premise.
Right off the main drag and the open doors on either side of the establishment encourages the foot traffic to come on in and grab a fresh item from their bakery.
How can you go wrong with a local coop bakery that provides delicious food and instant gratification?!?
My three favorite Arizmendi items:
*vegan banana-nut muffin: I could eat a vegan banana-nut muffin everyday and never get tired of them, and I am not even vegan. So good!
*pizza (any kind excepting the potato ones): There is only one kind of pizza per day, though they do repeat combinations so if you have a favorite you can always check their online pizza schedule to make sure you don't miss it. The crust is probably my favorite pizza crust ever, mmmm sourdough.
*hot crossed bunnies: Unfortunately for me they only make the hot crossed bunnies on Easter weekend, but they are well worth the wait.
Oh Arizmendi. Not only do you have the BEST pizza around, you also make scrumptious baked goods.
I was finally early enough to stop by Arizmendi before heading into the office, so I picked up some goodies for my mid-morning snack. I got the Vegan Banana Nut Muffin and a Pistachio Cardamom sticky bun type thing. Before I even get into my car, I try a bite of the vegan muffin. YUM! For a vegan muffin, it was incredible. Not dry at all. It had a crunchy crust on top but was moist throughout. It was so good that I ended up destroying the whole thing while driving. It didn't even survive the 4 minutes to my office! The pistachio cardamom sticky bun was also yummy. I heated it up a bit and it was perfect.
I now feel like a complete fat a$$ but it was worth it. Luckily I'm never early enough to make a stop on my way to work. Otherwise I'd always make stops at Arizmendi for some goodies! One thing I was tempted to try but resisted was the vegan mint chocolate cookie! I have my eye on it, so vegan mint chocolate cookie, watch out.. I'm coming for you!
When I walked in I thought I had died and went to Jannah(Heaven). I stopped and just took a deep breath.. I always think that a bakery smells like home for some reason.
I swiftly was drawn to the cases with the freshly baked good.. and then I saw it.. short bread- cue the love song. I love all baked goods equally until it comes to shortbread and other sweets- then they win my own heart and sweet tooth completely!
So I had to get some short bread- but I was really here to get some lunch. My friend Susan.. said the pizza is awesome. Now for a girl from Chicago.. you gotta be packing heat when it comes to pizza because we do it deep in the Windy City.. you know?
The pizza of the day was tomato, pesto and mozzorella.. I love that combo so I got a slice. They baked it fresh right before my eyes..and then I got it served piping hot to go.
We ended up eating in.. but that slice of pizza was gone before you could say Jack be quick! It was so good.. I was tempted to go back for another slice.. instead I went back for a chocolate chip cookie. Which amazingly I was able to hold off gobbling down until a few hours later.
I was also really happy to know I was supporting a worker owned co op - I love putting my money where my ethics are.
I am glad your located some distance from my home because this way .. my heart grows fonder while my hips say hot. Not that I would mind gaining a few pounds for my love of baked goods :)
So last sunday morning my sister and I wanted to eat a 'light' breakfast (mind you she is pregnant) and Arizmendi totally hit the spot!! I totally forgot about the one in Emeryville and oh boy, was that an experience. I got the brioche which was divine and she had a chocolate filled brioche looking bread (originally we wanted croissants) and they were both so tasty and delicious.
I have to come back, and try a slice of the pizza everyone else raves about!!
Although this is smaller than the lakeshore store, it seems to have better flow. Or maybe it's just less crowded. They also post their daily pizze selection online - hello, lakeshore, please start doing this!!!
Anywho..... yummy veggie pizza goodness, along with some baked goods.
This is coming from someone who literally eats a pound of meat a day....
Pretty damn creative way to make veggie pizzas.....also the Ecuadorian coffee is excellent, very distinct flavor....i like the idea of supporting a cooperative too....the only drawback...pizzas with no meat?is that really a pizza?
I have officially made this place my lunch of choice when i am off during weekdays.
I drive 3 blocks to go get some of the most sinful pizza ever made.
So I say to you once again....
go here. get pizza and stfu.

Best pizza, best scones. A good place to start the day. Sort of in a weird strip mall but the space affords it a nice patio. Say hi to Rafael when you go in.
My mouth waters at the thought of having such a beautiful thing inside of it.
I don't even read what I'm getting anymore because the surprise makes the joy that much more intense! I order, they hand it over, and I consume it. It's just that easy.
Make sure you get more than one slice...You'll need it!
Pesto mushroom 3-cheese pizza! @#%#%*!!!!!!
Great place for pizza when I was living in Emeryville and since I was out there again today, I had to stop by for the daily pizza. I believe it was roasted eggplant and a few other things. The service has always been extremely friendly and they are always pumpin' out the pizzas non-stop so you don't have to wait too long. two pizzas for $36 isn't the cheapest deal out there, but it's all about the quality of the pizza.
I couldn't give it a 5 star because I have a place in my heart for Zachary's and Cheeseboard, but Arizmendi is an near perfect alternative.
I have to confess that I was probably craving Arizmendi of all places in Emeryville because I just recently read Aaron M's review. hah.
This afternoon we were cruising down San Pablo and I spied Arizmendi which I had heard about and have been wanting to try.
As we passed the store front, I called out to my husband to pull a u-turn so we could try their pizza. Being a fan of pizza, my husband didn't question my request or miss a beat and promptly crossed traffic across San Pablo in order to navigate a u-turn. Nice!
The pie of the day was marinated artichokes with red onion and basil spinach pesto. We got one straight out of the oven and proceeded to share a slice, gobbling down each bite in the middle of the shop standing up. We're kind of uncivilized when it comes to good pizza, and this was good pizza.
The sourdough crust is what made it for me. The tangy flavor of the sourdough came through in the pizza and really worked for me.
I'm kind of sad that Arizmendi isn't more convenient to our house.
Today I had one of the best pizzas ever. It was 3 types of mushrooms, arugola ,and basil pesto on a sourdough crust. I was so hungry I overlooked the bih variety of breads and pastries on the side. This place has been here for a while and its pretty much a never-fail. The staff is friendly and altough there maybe a long line, it goes quick.
I have nothing new to add, it's all been said. I love me some Arizmendi pizza.
When I left the house this morning I *accidentally* forgot to pack the leftovers that were in the fridge. Now I'm working late at my client in E-ville.
I stopped by for a quick slice and it's just as good as it always is.
Thanks for being awesome Arizmendi!
yum! i love their pizza - and love love love their crust! sourdough? shut up!
I have to say that I'm biased; I love the Cheeseboard. With that said, I do like the goodies at Arizmendi. They have really tasty specialty scones, and yummy types of focaccia. Their coffee is strong, hot, and reasonably priced. They compost! The couple of "buts" that I would have are that their corn cherry scones somehow taste a bit mealy, and they appear to be smaller than their counterparts at, you guessed it, the Cheeseboard.
Also, the collective members do seem to be a bit lacking in decent customer service skills. I'm not talking about needing them to be ass-kissingly friendly, but simply having them use common niceties like "Good morning" or "Hello" when they've been greeted instead of stony silence, or "You're welcome" when being thanked.
Actually, another "but" would be about the tip jar that they have next to their register. As a collective, Arizmendi folk are worker/owners. They pay themselves a decent wage, (read: not minimum) and give themselves benefits. I have never seen a tip cup out on the counter at any of the other Arizmendi bakeries, nor at their sister bakery, Cheeseboard. So, why do they? I've never been keen to tip the owner of any other establishment, although I do think it a good idea to suppliment the usually poor wages of cafe workers. So, I have mixed feelings about tipping worker/owners. Especially worker owners who I feel usually have poor interpersonal skills.
Oh tasty tasty pizza. The focaccia looks amazing, the place smells like heaven and the pizza of the day i had was divine. I like the fact you can pick up half pizzas or half baked pizzas--whether you're half baked or not.
It's not far from the house, only a quick bike ride, but not long enough to warrant no guilt.
I had the red onion, artichoke heart and spinach pesto slices....deeelish. Friendly staff, good neighborhood locale and outdoor seating. We got there late in the day and didn't get to try any pastries or scones but one day I'll stop by on my way home from the gym, just to revel in undoing anything I had accomplished, heh.
You can't take away any stars for such a simple place as this. Food is fast, convenient and portable, plenty of parking in the back, and a quick register transaction makes for a 5 star experience. I'm not a big meat eater so for me, their pizzas are perfect. The last thing I ever want on my pizza is boring, gross pepperoni, and luckily, Arizmendi pretty much does the exact opposite. They always build the most interesting, sophisticated and delicious flavor combinations.
I also routinely stop by here to just grab a sourdough baguette. The freshly baked breads are excellent here with a nice selection of local cheeses. A good place to go if you want to get something quick and if you're eating alone.
I'm honestly not sure how to rate this: 3 stars or 4?
The pizza of the day was this sweet potato w/cilantro pesto and red onions w/3 cheeses. While the sweet potato was actually enjoyable, I don't know if the pizza as a whole did it for me. The pizza alone, I would say, was 2 stars.
However, I also had the cornbread blueberry muffin. OMFG. That thing was damn f***ing good. Maybe it's my sweet tooth. Maybe I was just that hungry. Maybe I just liked the cornbread. Whatever it was, if they made that cornbread muffin near my workplace, I'd eat it every day, no matter how unhealthy it was. That muffin would get 5 stars alone from me.
So now, what to do? It's 2 stars for the pizza versus 5 stars for the cornbread blueberry muffin. Average it out to 3 or 4? Alright, you know what? I'm gonna give it a 3 for now just because we went to sit outside and all the tables were dirty and no one had bothered to clean it. And if their pizza is going to be only one type a day, it should be something better than what I had.
I haven't been to the one on Lakeshore, or the one in SF (is it related?), so this is a stand-alone review. I compared its olive roll to the foccaccia olive roll at Cheeseboard. I loved this one because it has cheese on it. I loved Cheeseboard's olives better though. Conclusion - I'm going to have to grab one here, then while munching on it drive down to cheeseboard, then munch on that on the drive back home.
Pizza - I'm sooooo stoked that I now have closer location to grab a slice of gourmet cheesy goodness!
Arizmendi RULES. Great pizza, amazing baked goods and good coffee. The only thing they could do to improve in my mind is stay open a little later. The location on Lakeshore is just as good.
A co-op business where the employees are the owners makes this a pretty happy place to go to. Ok, well I've never actually been there, but I imagine from how good their pizza's are that they are pretty content with what they do.
This is right next to Oaks Card Club and has ample parking in the rear, but street is also available.
So when you go, order their pizzas, it's fresh, organic, and delicious. I just wish that more people ate at places like this other than Pizza hut and/or Dominos. If you're in the mood for pizza, look up "pizza" online and try someplace new. You won't be disappointed.
I would go here for all of my pizza needs if I lived near here. Same with the place Gay 90's Pizza.
Don't knock it till you try it!
Enjoy!
Cheeseboard was closed so my friends and I decided to hit up Arizmendi.
Pizza selection for the day: roma tomatoes, arugula, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing
Half a pizza (4 slices): $9
Pluses: I'm a fan of thin crust so I really enjoyed the crispiness of the baked dough.
Minuses: We did take out and so by the time we got home, my pizza was cold. I was so hungry that I didn't want to take the time to warm it up.
Oh, and my friend holding the box, dropped it and the two slices for me and my husband fell on the pavement. With my mouth gaping open, I finally asked, "Did the cheese touch the pavement?" She said, "No, the crust touched it." I replied, "That's totally fine. I'll still eat it."
i'm starting to think that this place can do no wrong. i eat at arizmendi about once a week and have never had a bad experience. the pizza is always ridiculously good and the service is prompt and efficient. two slices for $5, you can't beat that with a stick.
also the corn cherry scones are off the charts.
i also find myself checking their pizza calendar online to see what will be served on a given day. i wish i could say i have a favorite, but they are all awesome.
3 Stars for now for pastry review only
I read so many great reviews about Arizmendi so i decided to check it out. Very nice and friendly staff! I picked up the corn blueberry scone, and the russian tea cake.
I actually make better russian tea cake believe it or not, well that's because I made them gearing toward my own taste so no fair there! The corn blueberry scone was with great texture, crunchy outside, but lack the INTENSE corn flavor that I was wishing for. (I love corn)
Overall, it was a great place with great staff. I also love the organic soda they sell, so yummy!
But as for now, before i try the supposedly heavenly slice of their gourmet pizza, 3 stars.
Great pastries & good coffee (better than 7-11). They bake one style pizza for each day & their pizza schedule is online. A little expensive for a vegetarian pizza. No meat at all on any of the pizza. Pizza can be very oily sometimes because depending on the recipe for the day they'll brush olive oil over the pie. Good breakfast place & lunch pick-up place when pushed for time.

Mr. Cilantro, I see you there
Polluting my delicious pie
Begone, foul weed
Yet you remain, and reappear
Pretender to good taste
Perhaps you are there
to save us
from the singularity
of the perfect pizza pie
Remember those summer days on the east coast when lawns were just cut and the rain had stopped long enough for a mist to rise up from the grass. Now breath in...Do you smell the wet fresh cut grass...?
That is what my fucking slice tasted like. It was bleeccchhhhh gosh darn disgusting. Arugula and tomato promises to be such a great combo. It ain't so here where they regularly screw up a simple slice. Today was my last time ....
