Review from Olivia T.
When I walked into Arista, I had to double checked what I was wearing. This place feels trendy and posh. With red walls match with black everything and chandeliers, I couldn't help feeling like I was walking into "Fangtasia" (the vampires' bar in True Blood). It was sort of weird, but cool at the same time.
We were there for happy hour on Tuesday night and there weren't many patrons. Maybe people don't know that Arista has awesome Happy Hour food. Besides happy hour food, they also have $5 plates menu that they serve all night.
I was pleased with my gumbo. It was delicious and I was pleased with our "shared" burger as well. They serve beer and wine. No cocktails yet, but they will serve cocktails in the near future. Arista is definitely a "must go" place for happy hour food.
P.S: They are also on http://Restaurant.com for $25 off $35 gift certificate. :) -

The Arista Restaurant is located on Hawthorne just off the corner of 39th at street level.
I went to the opening and had the Lamb and Polenta dish, which I thought was a great combination and some of the best food I've had in Portland in a long time. The field greens salad was also excellent.
If your looking for high-end, 5-star food on Hawthorne, this is your place.
Also, the bartender made an awesome Mai Tai! :) -

Really.... not that impressed. I went here with some friends before a show at the Hawthorne Theatre, which is conveniently right next door. I suggested this place because of it's proximity to the concert, and I was looking forward to trying a new place on Hawthorne. Things started out well, our only complaint being the wide open door that let in the brisk fall air. They said they would bring in a space heater, and they promptly did so. We ordered drinks and perused the menu. My friend received a hastily made margarita with not enough salt on the rim (but hey, margs are probably not their speciality).
I was stoked about the options on the $5 plate menu... a good variety. I ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo, friends had the lamb burger and ravioli (as you can tell they pull inspiration from many places). We sipped on our drinks... and waited... and waited........ and.... waited. After awhile, we all looked at each other and wondered out loud what was taking so long. This place is not very big and they weren't that busy for a Friday night. The waitress seemed to avoid us as we hatched a plan to ask if things could be hurried up. The show was about to start and we'd been waiting nearly an hour since we ordered. Eventually she came back to fill up our waters and to say it would only be a few minutes. About 20 minutes later she came back, apologizing again and saying they could give us a discount on our dinner. We all politely nodded and she scurried off. Dinner FINALLY came and I was missing the opening act, which was not okay in this situation. The food was decent, but not near anything that should have taken an hour to prepare. We wondered if there had been a major error in the kitchen, like they ran out of lamb and had to go to Fred Meyer across the street to grab some.
I left before we got the bill, but my friends tell me there was not even a discount applied to the bill and that the server seemed to be hiding as someone else brought the tab to our table.
I probably won't be back. They lacked a lot when comparing to some of the other amazing places to eat on Hawthorne. That's what I get for trying to be convenient, I guess. -

Arista is still figuring itself out, but I wouldn't mind checking them out in a few months to see how they are doing. The night we were there, they were literally unpacking the bar, and a lot of things were not available. But they did cocktails for $2 so we were flexible. I ordered a lemon drop and the waitress came to the table and when she and I looked at it we did a doubletake as it was served in a strange fountain glass with big chunks of ice. Then when she took it back to have it done right, it came back with at least 1/4" of sugar on the rim - a little exuberant on the effort. Interesting red & black decor - kinda cool but the chandeliers look like they were made in a beading class. Love the outdoor patio - right on Hawthorne yet semi private. We tried the sliders, sweet potato fries, and shrimp skewers for happy hour. The sliders were fantastic! And I don't normally order this type of snack. Fries were acceptable, and shrimp was quite salty. Desserts are primarily not made in-house which is a bummer, and the fruit tart was highly NOT recommended by our waitress - kinda scary to hear that so we avoided dessert altogether. The best part of the experience, which would have been deemed so-so without it, was our waitress. She had a great attitude and sense of humor about everything, and is the kind of person that brings people back to give places like this another chance.
Note: their parking lot is super weird on the Hawthorne side - people were parking in strange ways - let's repaint the lines or something y'all? -

Arista Restaurant offers a great $5/plate nightly special. A combination of $1-$2 beers on Wednesday, a convenient location, and an up-scale historic atmosphere, this restaurant is sure to suit the needs of the average bargoer AND the executive professional. Be sure to try the signature items: Salmon Chowder and a tasty Lamb Burger. One con, the waiters wearing ties needed to wash them.

I recently found this place before i went to a show next door at the Hawthorne Theater. I was pleasantly surprised to find an up-scale menu with lots of seafood. I had the Mussels which were really plump and cooked perfectly in what I would call a coconut milk anise combo. Next I had the porchini ravioli served with truffle oil and baby carrots . I liked it enough to want more but i was completely stuffed! Service was good. Drawbacks= they didn't have cocktails, Seems the bathrooms were under construction and the Torches outside had unnecessarily huge flames. Overall this place is great for dinner!!

Very promising. The atmosphere is unbeatable for a romantic evening, or one for conversation and outdoor seating. Food choices are good. Fabulous wine selection and great wait staff and service. Food was good but the dishes could be offer a little more depth in flavor( like the mussels could have been a little more spiced).
