115 reviews for Ariake Japanese Restaurant
Review Highlights
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Thoroughly Impressed! I just can't believe it took me so long to find this central Richmond gem. Highlights were the Uni, Blue Fin, Mirugai, fresh house-cured Saba, and the excellent selection of good beer and Sake. I went for an early lunch with my best friend and had a nice time talking to Jin (The owner) who was very knowledgeable, patient and sensible. When it comes to good fish at reasonable prices in a friendly and clean environment Ariake gets 5 stars. This is my new Sushi home. Definitely worth crossing the park for!
Amazing experience for my first time at Ariake! I've lived in the neighborhood for a year and have tried a handful of sushi spots in the Inner Richmond, and by far Ariake offers the freshest sushi and friendly, attentive service mixed with reasonable prices.
Three of us came in at 6:00 pm on a Thursday night -- hardly rush hour. Within 15 minutes, though, nearly the "entire" restaurant (maybe 10 tables and a sushi bar) was packed, which we took to mean that we made the right choice. The staff checked in with us every few minutes, though, so service was consistently top notch throughout the meal.
Every roll was delicious; we split one each of the Bob's Roll (best one for sure -- prawn tempura topped w/seared bonito & special sauce), Dragon Roll (standard eel/avocado -- but very fresh avocado made it stand out), Dynamite Roll (spicy yellowtail, salmon and tuna deep friend w/sauce -- yum) and Godzilla (fried yellowtail -- so so) roll. The nigiri rolls were especially good -- we recommend the white tuna and the salmon. Definitely could be a good quick date spot, or for a group of friends.
And extra thanks for the extra effort on the part of the hostess -- I left my debit card behind, and she sprinted a block to catch up with us and reunite me with my one and only source of $$. A very fun night, thanks Ariake!
Meh. Fresh sushi and good service but the price is not worth the admission. Me and a some friends split the Bob, moondog, ariake, live scallops, and the ankimo. I also tried some of my friend's tempura udon.
The food was nice and fresh and my favorite part of the meal was the flavorful monkfish liver. But the same food can be had at any other decent Japanese restaurant. Here it was a bit pricey for it's quality.
The staff was nice and attentive(small restaurant), I reccomend the Moon Dog and Ankimo.
Decent sushi, but that special something called "service" wasn't up to the task.
Couple friends and I decided to break out of our usual Sunset based sushi routine and headed over to The Richmond to see if there was anything worth the trip plus the joy of finding Geary parking on a Saturday evening. We settled on Ariake after a slew of places couldn't seat us right away because boy were we hungry.
Ariake, like most sushi joints, distinguishes itself on its rolls. Different variations on tried-and-true themes. I ordered the caterpillar roll -- avocado and eel -- complete with eyes out of salmon roe on top of octopus suckers and sprouts for antenna, it was the best presented caterpillar roll I've every had the pleasure of eating. Sadly, the amount of eel was poor and the avocado dominated the dish. Worse yet, no wasabi was provided! In fact, counting all the sushi dishes order by the entire table we received only two small "dollops" of wasabi. The other diners reported their sushi was better, and the few other pieces I stole were, in fact, decent.
Food was also brought out in a very strange order, with some diners receiving their entire order before another even received their sushi (to say nothing of their main dish). We then waited nearly 15 minutes after our plates were cleared before someone thought it would be nice to give us a check, or even swing by so we could ask for a check.
The tonkatsu I ordered was overly breaded, but the dipping sauce was more than sufficiently tangy, and the miso soup really hit the spot on a cold San Francisco evening. They also offer a reasonably wide selection of cold sakes and we all enjoyed our selected bottle quite a bit (but heck if I can remember what we actually ordered).
But the truth is, between the poor service, the insufficient eel, and the over-breading, I wont' be in a rush to return... except maybe for a bowl of piping hot miso.
Birthday dinner for my man here last night, and it was delicious! I had udon soup and we shared a plate of sushi rolls (the Ariake). I tried the salmon, which was very fresh, but my favorite was the california roll - absolutely delicious!! The soup was good also - large portion and very filling. The prices are reasonable and the food is high quality - Ariake is rated a 27/30 for food on Zagat for a reason!
Service was also good, well-paced and our server was very sweet - she responded promptly to all of our requests and even brought us complimentary scoops of green tea ice cream in honor of the b-day. Yum!!
I was here about a week ago, so forgive me if I forget some of the details of my delicious meal here. Service was friendly and attentive, and the fish tasted super fresh. LOVE that they have wild salmon here, as I try not to eat the farmed stuff anymore and miss my sake nigiri.
I introduced my friend to Hamachi Kama, which was very good here. A great addition to our meal! A seaweed salad was good, but why is it that this dish tastes/looks the same EVERYWHERE regardless of where I get it?
We ordered some spicy tuna rolls, as well as a bunch of nigiri, and I enjoyed all the food as well as the conversation (both mine with my friend as well as the couple at the sushi bar, they were interesting!). I will definitely be back here when I want to go somewhere less of a scene and want good sushi!
Went there to grab a quick lunch. Everything was good. Nothing extremely spectacular that would make me go head over heels with this place but you cannot fully judge the restaurant by one lunch.
What you can see though is the cleanness of the bathrooms, tables and utensils, attention from the staff (although I was the only one there, so all attention went to me), and timely manner of service. Prices are a little too high for a city full of sushi joints, but the quality is decent.
Will come there again, if I remember where it's at.
We went there for a birthday dinner tonight and the food was very fresh, yummy and arrived on quickly. The service was prompt, actually sometimes too prompt as we were not ready to place our orders a few times the waitress came around. I tried a bunch of new things for the first time since the birthday girl ordered them. I think the food is excellent, quantity is fair, and the price was fair. This place is great for a date but if you are hungry and short on cash, this ain't the place for you.
Happy Dining!
Attention all sushi lovers: Ariake's sushi delivers freshness and satisfaction! The size of the place is small but that does not give you a reason to not come!
5-star reviews?! They're either getting paid, its the employees writing reviews, or these people like the taste of dog food.
The only good thing are the waiters, theyre pleasant.
I ATE:
-the saba (mackerel) shioyaki dinner that came out DRY GRAY & SMELLED.
- I had to ask for teriyaki sauce which i smothered over the entire thing to much dissatisfaction this did not help & I just left it on the plate.
- California roll & unagi nigiri.
The sushi rice was not fresh, nor was the seafood, the fish was not a nice ruby red color for the ahi, it was nearly brown
- ginger was also lackluster.
At the ned of this "meal" my food was still on the plate... I probably looked like I was annorexic. I would honestly starve myself before having to go back to this place.
-If I had to pay NOT to go here I would leave C-notes.
-If I got a flat tire and the only restraunt open is Ariake I would walk to J-Box in the rain.
-If I saw Ariake employees handing out free alcohol to lure in customers I would tell them I'm underage to avoid the nastiness to follow.
I WILL NEVER RETURN.
The Moon Dog is still the best item on their menu ~ a must try for everyone! Bob's was pretty good as well and their sashimi is really fresh.
When there is a full house, service is not as great - my tea cup was always empty and I had to ask 3x before it got refilled =/ May not be such a great place to chill but still a great place for sushi.

A solid 4.5 stars! Really fresh fish, great neighborhood find. I found that the price was great for the level of food, although the service was lacking. The place is tiny, so come early or on a week night. The best thing was the Tataki and anything with raw salmon.
This place is great! Love coming here with friends for a night of great food and nigori. The staff is friendly, and the chiefs are amazing. Try the tataki salad with their creamy sauce, and the Moondog roll. Although parking is difficult in the evenings, trust me, the fresh sushi will be totally worth it.
We love the moondog roll! This was the first roll we had and we were impressed, the fish was very fresh and good. I'm freaked out by fish roe even though I eat them. The fish roe were so fresh and good here, that for the first time, I actually enjoyed eating them. This surprised me! This was a damn good sign of fish quality.
The waitresses kept forgetting things like uh....the menu..but they were sooo nice that it was more funny than annoying. The staff here here is friendly. This is a good place to bring kids because there were a bunch of kids with dishes everywhere and the waitstaff accommodated everyone keeping a happy, upbeat attitude. The prices and the portions are good as well. I didn't like the texture / taste of the spicy tuna here but win some, lose some I guess. I get the hit or miss thing that someone mentioned because I liked some rolls I ordered but not some of the others as much. My husband liked all the rolls we ordered, so maybe I'm just picky. The rolls with mango and the dragon roll were quite tasty. Not a place I would go for a special occasion or ambiance but.....a great place to go on a casual night out.
Ariake is easily my favorite sushi place in the city (for the money). What they lose in ambiance, they double back and kill it in unbelievable quality of fish. We went again last Friday (I've been too many times to count), and as usual we were greeted with a warm welcome by the owner/chef and with unreal fish.
The rolls I would say are above average. But any place can make a decent roll. What really distinguishes one place from another is when you are tasting their Sashimi/Nigiri. I can't say enough about their quality of fish. Try their: Escolar, Ocean Trout, Aji, Shima Aji, Tai, Toro, Hamachi, etc, etc, etc. The hand-written pages on the back wall is where you should focus your attention as that will have his specialty fish listed. Now that they finally have a decent list of sake (used to have like 2 options - hot or cold!), this place cannot be beat, though don't come here looking for ambiance, come looking for fish. Sweet, sweet fish.
=)
Nothing spectacular. I tried some imported Aji and got some salmon sashimi. I really need to hit this place a few times to give it an honest review. I'll give it solid three for now. They asked me some questions about other places and my opinion. From the tone of the conversation, I guess they wanted to know the competition in the hood. I gave them my opinion on a half dozen. The sushi chef was familiar with some of his colleagues along the Geary strip. The service was good. The place looks dead alot of the times I drive by. They have fresh sushi, they just need to do something with it that will differentiate themselves. Alot of Korean owned sushi places taste like them.... anyways.. try it.
BTW, sounds like some of the reviews here are fake:) Expecially the ones who claim they have the best sushi and only have one or two restaurant reviews and they give this place a 5...BS!
HI-OH!!!!!!! What a great find!
Everything we had was excellent.
-Seaweed Salad
-Spicy scallop Hand Roll
-Ariake Roll - spicy tuna roll topped with seaweed salad: great
-Tataki - Thinly sliced white tuna (sashimi) with lemon zest and ponzu sauce. This was recommended by the waitress and it was excellent. The small is plenty for two people!
Food-wise, my only complaint was that the edamame was a bit over done.
The waitress were extremely nice, but we did have to ask for a couple time for refills on our water.
I will be back the next time I am in SF.
Service good. Price good. Food gooooooood.
What we had:
Spicy QP roll- it was really fresh and yummy! and a lot of times when I order a spicy something roll, the spicy tends to overpower the rest of the roll, but not here. it was perfect spiciness!
Negimachi- tasty
Firecracker- mmmm....deeeeeelish!
Natto make- I love natto maki and it's a ritual for me to get at least one at sushi restaurants, but i think they put a little too much katsuobushi (bonito flakes) in this, and it was a tad dry. but still good enough to eat
Gyoza- had the perfect amount of crispiness and the dip was really good
Tsukimi Tororo- tried the quail egg w/grated yam and it had yummy subtle flavors
What I loved about this place was that the flavors were subtle enough that you can actually enjoy the taste of the fish in the sushi, because a lot of times at sushi restaurants they put so much other ingredients that you can't really taste the fish. I'm goin back again!
Most of the food I tried is typical and fresh.
But
the Firecraker Roll and Toro are to die for.
mmmm ... spicy crunchy ... buttery melty... heaven.
My boss wanted to treat me out for lunch for my B day. I originally wanted to go to Kabuto, but he insisted to go somewhere I've never been to.
THANKS BOSS! I now have (another) favorite Sushi restaurant to call home. FRESH, FRESH, FRESH!!!!! MUST TRY:
Tataki( Great portion for an excellent price)
Toro( Mmmmm... melts in your mouth)
Uni( OMG. ... Another order please?)
Will definitely be back!
came in here totally shitfaced with a large party...wanted to pit stop before next waterhole with sake bombs
even though our eyes were glazed in a glassy stare, we were immediately accommodated. the waitress was very sweet and patient and the chefs, either classically trained in the art of looking cordial and inviting, or genuinely amused watched us sake bomb and stay in their restaurant for literally 4 minutes. if they were alarmed at our presence and were ready to unsheathe their katanas from under the table where they folded their sushi at minute's notice...they hid it well
if you want want a late night pitstop..around 10-11 or so...please visit this place and say it is one of your party's birthday. even if it is a total lie...it lightens up the mood...wadDUUUUUUP
Who knew???
I have lived in Richmond most if not all of my life. This place has surpassed my frame of vision for sometime now. All is not lost. My little brother took the mom and I here for our birthday. While she - stuck in her ways stuck to tempura and rice, sometimes venturing over to the sashimi we were having, my brother and I went for all things still alive and kicking. Their oyster was delicious - small compared to Sushi Tani, but still fresh and refreshing. My assorted sashimi of tuna, sake and hamachi were fresh and also refreshing, again quite small. At this point...still quite hungry. The rolls on the other hand were of good size. I have to say I left kinda hungry. I just couldn't justify ordering more though...
But next time, I'll have to try the uni...it'll make or break the place for me....
My favorite place for sushi. Everything here is so fresh and tasty. I'm a salmon fan and never disappointed when ordering salmon nigiri or salmon toro from here. I normally order unagi donburi for lunch, I love all the side stuff that came with it. If you're a sushi lover, you definitely must try, best sushi in town!!!
This place is pretty good BUT..there's a but......
Ordered take-out from here a few weeks ago. Read the reviews and ordered some of the special rolls recommended. But do yourself a favor and DO NOT order the Uni! OMG, one of my two bad experiences with Uni. I spit it back out. It was so gross. They're lucky I wasn't eating it in the restaurant. I'll order from them again but not the Uni and maybe not the sashimi (not as fresh as everyone is saying) If I don't order Uni or sashimi--what's the point of ordering Japanese?
Hmmmm ; / maybe it was a bad day for them? but every day should be a good day, right?
Don't order from the menu...
Let the chef take care of you at the bar... the off menu food is excellent. fish is so fresh and the place is always packed. some of the Sauce on their rolls might not be the best choice (like the sweet mayo - more like american style)
Just ask the chef for special of the night. and Do Not complain about the price... normally spend $30-$50 per. If that's too much, just EXPECT less then :D
This is one of my favorite Sushi spots. I used to live just down the street, and my old roomie and I would frequent this spot if we were craving sushi. Now that I no longer live in the 'hood,' I still try and hit up Ariake as often as I can. It's also been a tradition that my old roomie and I go there for our respective birthday outings.
Most of the clientele here are locals. I've even brought my mom, who is a picky eater, to Ariake, and she now calls it one of her favs!
Anyway, I'm all about the sush, as it is always fresh. I recommend the tataki (white tuna) salad, as it's one of my favorite dishes. It is delish, and I love how the lemon wedges bring out the flavor in each bite. Another fav of mine is the hamachi. Oh, it just melts in your mouth! Make sure to see what their daily specials are. I'm a mango freak, and there was a special sushi roll with mango and hamachi (if memory serves me right). Oh mylanta!!! Truly divine!
Service is good. Servers and sushi chefs are friendly and efficient. I recommend going early for dinner to beat the rush.
Overall, Ariake has more things going for it than any other sushi joint in the Middle Richmond - extremely high quality fish, friendly sushi chefs, a nice atmosphere, and lots of exciting creations to try.
But the downside - small portions, cramped conditions, boiling hot tea, and pretty weak service. Seriously, it was like they were auditioning waitresses and we were paying the price. It was a busy Monday night around 7, but watching the two waitresses handling the customers was like watching a hyperactive 5th grader trying to do calculus. We got tired of it and left...still hungry.
I'd love to try it another time, but will definitely make sure it's no more than 50% full. Great fish, but not a dining experience I'd care to repeat anytime soon.
Out of hundreds of sushi places I've been to, this one makes the best tatake salad. Lot's of places don't even have it. The atmosphere is nice, small cozy place with friendly people. They're not very cheap, but most of the stuff from the menu is delish!!!
Ariake just seems to get better with each visit. The fish is excellent. I loooove the MOON DOG!!! Definitely a worthwhile try. Incredible flavors for their rolls and fresh fish. Not going to name all the items I have had but you won't be disappointed.
This place is a little hidden gem! I'll have to say I passed by Ariake's a million times while driving down Geary Blvd., but never made it a point to go in. Boy am I happy my friend took me here. The sushi was excellent!! Everything we ordered was fresh and appetizing. The uni, salmon, super white tuna are all ichiban! The rolls aren't too bad either. And nothing beats free edamame, my fav!
Overall I had a very pleasant dining experience here. The owner seems to have a personality and spark about him that makes people want to come back. Although the service from the waitress' could use a little improvement, that probably won't stop me from visiting this place again in the future.
But patrons beware... this place is quite small and it gets packed rather quickly. My friend and I visited Ariake's on a Monday night and the place was super busy.
Visited Ariake for dinner last night with my hubby. We went in around 6pm and there were only 2 other parties there but it filled up pretty quickly as we were having dinner. They were nice enough to turn on the heater right above our table as it was a chilly evening.
Our little table in the corner was nicely decorated with a fresh red rose. A pretty nice touch. The service was excellent and very efficient. An empty dish never stayed on our table for more than a few minutes before being whisked away.
We ordered the "Love" chirashi, monk fish liver, and chicken teriyaki. They were nice enough to substitute the salmon roe for extra hamachi, my fav fish, in the chirashi. The sashimi in the chirashi was excellent, very fresh, and I enjoyed the other ingredients of the dish, the marinated bamboo (I think), the soy sauce mushrooms, the sprouts, shredded turnip, and tamago. For $20, I was very satisfied. The monk fish liver was nicely sauced, a bit soy and spicy sauce. Yum! If you like liver pate, you'd like this dish. The chicken teriyaki wasn't terribly special but a good portion and tasted like chicken teriyaki should taste, not over-sweetened like some places.
Overall, a good dining experience. Oh, their tea smells (and tastes!) so delicious after coming in from the cold! Our dinner cost about $50 after already adding tip. Pretty affordable considering how much sashimi I ended up eating.
with so much sushi on geary in the avenues i always forget that ariake is there.
i've been a few times before, and haven't had a bad meal yet. the fish is fresh and tasty, the prices are par, and the space is cool.
they've got a decent bar, and i love sitting at the bar slowly ordering one thing after another.
This place has escolar! I love it! It's so rare to see that, but I definitely did not expect it here. Even though we went half an hour before closing, the lady still let us come in. The rolls are very unique, and I'd definitely come back!
Con L I think you should try this =p
yum yum yum yum... all i can say is it was delicious... yummy beyond yum yum... it was so good... I wish I can eat more and more!
I had their special the ariake roll and I had the 49er, and the oyster, although it was some tiny oyster, I commend them for good authentic japanese food... yummmmmmmmmmmmmy! Def, will come bak
For those allergic to seafood but love Japanese cuisine.
It's taking a while but I'm working on compiling a list of Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area that serve a broad selection of flavorful non-seafood dishes.
Here's what I have so far:
1. Oyagi - San Francisco
2. Tokie's - Foster City
3. Kitaro - San Francisco (fast food like for me but reliable)
4. Ariake - San Francisco
5.
6.
up to 10.
As you can see, I'm looking to build a top ten list but it has become a surprisingly challenging task as most restaurants I find specialize in sushi.
Anyway ,thanks Yelp for your suggestions so far. I'll keep you up to date on my progress.
Quick Synopsis - Friendly Vibe. Attentive Service. Gregarious sushi chef.
Decent :agedashi tofu, yakitori, chicken teriyaki. Clean. Reasonable Prices. Sushi -Good (confirmed by dan b.)
Two nights of sushi in a row! I've always wanted to try here since it's like three blocks from my house. Glad I chose to come here the other night! It was super busy for a Thursday night around 730. The place is small with just a couple tables for 4 and a sushi bar. We got seated right where the door was and it was freezing!
We kept looking at what everyone was eating and started drooling. Everything looked so good but we decided on trying these items:
Moon Dog Roll ($12) - Shrimp tempura and crab with seared tuna on top and their special sauce
Spider Roll ($9) - soft shell crab with veggies.
I've had better spider rolls but it was still tasty.. They didn't skimp on the soft shell crab!
Dynamite Roll ($7) - Yellow tail, salmon, tuna, lightly deep fried.
So good but the outside fried goodness had just a little too much batter on it so it was really thick.
Island Roll ($12) - Crab and shrimp tempura with salmon and avocado and lemon on top.
MmMMmmm yummy fresh salmon with that thin slice of lemon taste so good together!!!!
The prices for those special rolls are pretty pricey but it was worth it. Really good. I wish I would get my tea BEFORE I get my food next time?
Just got back from a birthday dinner here and had to Yelp the hell out of it. While it was very quant and charming, there are too many great sushi spots in SF to be sub par. That's exactly what this place was. Not bad... except for the fact that the waitress brought us hamachi and tried to convince us it was white tuna (I know what white tuna is - it's white!) But overall, I wasn't really wowed by the experience.
If you go, you MUST try the sushi foie gras. I'm not even sure how you can make foie gras using sushi (I can't remember which fish it involved, but I'm leaning toward something like hamachi). None of the other rolls stood out and their roll selection was somewhat limited.
The company was great (I love my friends), but all in all, the food itself and the service were both underwhelming. There was also a point during the night when the entire restaurant was watching American Idol playing on the screen. I can do that at home! Hit up one of the other cute joints in the area - I think there are 10 on Geary alone!
Oh and some little kid at a nearby table called me "Mommy" while we were eating. I was worried enough about turning 26 - is this an omen!??
Sometimes surprises are fun. Like guessing what's behind door number three and winning a brand new car. Unfortunately, I am not so sure that the inconsistency with the food at Ariake is a game of surprise I particularly enjoy. It's more like finding out that you still won a brand new car, but it's a 1976 Chevrolet Caprice that doesn't even have the original 8-track player so you can show it off to your hipster friends.
The food at Ariake seems to be either extremely delicious or not so great. I have yet to get a mix of the two extremes, but I have noticed that the not so great food usually occurs when they are a little busier. This also seems to affect the pacing of the food. You may get your first roll after 10 minutes and your second after 20. I also noticed that though customers sitting at the bar may come in quite awhile after me, they are served first. So I suggest thinking about another option if the place is busy or trying to sit at the bar. The service is always friendly and when the food is "On" they have one of the best Dragon rolls (which I am normally not crazy about) I have ever had.
When the fiance and I are out and about w/o the kiddos, we always search for food that to us, is harder to eat w/kiddos around. Sushi is one of those meals. One, because you want to enjoy every little morsel of taste as it reaches your mouth w/o anyone swatting, screaming, or lunging at you and two, because I have a ginormous fear that I will poke above mentioned kiddos w/my chopsticks while attempting to tackle reason one. Not a pretty sight, folks.
So sushi it was and w/a dash of citysearch and a serving of yelp we stumbled across Ariake. And why yes, fellow yelpers, you are on the mark w/this one. If I were to gauge the cost of the sushi against the taste my belly and wallet would say, yay, I'm a fan and pat me on the back for being financially savvy. The Moon Doggie and Bob are my favorite. The spot is a little tight, but you really won't care b/c they are quite friendly and it makes it easier to ask the table/person next to you what they're having and what they think of it. (Now, I didn't do that but I saw a couple strangers discussing their plates and I'd like to believe it's not due to Christmas spirit.) So go, Ariake, it's yummy, I wish you luck in finding a parking space.
Came here last night for a quick-japanese-craving-type-bite-to-eat.
It was already 11:15pm, so most of the places on Geary were closed. However, after a few drives back and forth between Clement and Geary, we discovered this jewel. It's somewhat hidden, and small.
Nobody was in there, so it made me kind of skeptical. My parents always said watch out for the places with no customers. It was late which was considerable but my perception of the Sunset/Richmond neighborhood is that there are always late-diners around here.
But WHATEVER.. we just wanted to get our hands on some sushi/japanese food already!
Decided to order the dragon roll to split between the two of us.
Now I know my review is based on just one item, but that has probably got to be one of the, if not best already, BEST dragon rolls I have ever tasted. It was extremely fresh and made with juicy goodness. The roll came with about 10-12 pieces for $12.00. Mmm, that was kind of pricey huh now that I think about it.. 1 dollar a pop! Dinner Bento Boxes were about something like $14.95 for two items, and $17.95 for 3. A bit on the expensive side compared to many of the other restaurants in the area.
I also LOVED that the restaurant was owned by authentic Japanese people, not by Koreans or Chinese, haha.
Definitely could be expecting a potential revisit from me in the future.
