Being the college student that I am and weighing in at 245 lbs I need food to function and with USF providing very few choices to eat and overpriced food that is always repetitive, I need a spot to fill that void of keeping me well fed.
Enter Arguello Super Market tucked away on Arguello street. The best part of this place is there selection of foods. You can choose from different types of potato salads, piroshkis, buy some chips, a premade sandwich, sushi, all kinds of foods.
Of course, the Sandwiches are what makes this place. The Fresh Turkey Sandwich is the number one option one your choice of bread, cheese, condiments etc. Costs about $7 for a nice sized sandwich. The staff is very friendly and complete your order to your liking.
Parking is nearby with plenty of 2 hour over by Mcallister street on the corner or if your lucky, 15-30 minute parking in front.
Overall, it is a great place to grab a quick bite if your tired of eating at the USF cafeteria if your a student or if your just in the neighborhood looking for a quick bite. -

REALLLY GOOD TURKEY..
My friend always gets these at work and she shares with me !! Haha I'm so lucky! I definitely have to make my way out there to get one myself one of these days.
The turkey sandwich on dutch crunch is on point! It is really good and the meat is juicy and not dry like how turkey is usually. It is fairly plain but its delicious. Sometimes plain is good! -

I'm one of the people who find the turkey sandwich phenomenon here to be quite perplexing. It's real turkey, on bread, with lettuce, tomato, mayo, a pickle. You can also get Dutch Crunch. You can specify dark or white meat.
I think the reason people go so crazy about this sandwich is that it is real sliced turkey, not processed deli turkey meat.
Still, that's all it is. Don't expect something different than that. But I still give the place four stars because it's a cute place, and if people love this sandwich, I think that's great. I mean, why rain on the parade?
Personally though, I just find the whole thing quite baffling, that's all. -

After reading the rhapsodic reviews of the life changing experience other folks have had eating the infamous turkey sandwich, I decided to schlep across Golden Gate Park from my Inner Sunset digs to sample the gastronomic wonder. One word. M-E-H. Completely underwhelmed by what amounted to a post-Thanksgiving day cold turkey sandwich lunch. Finished half of it and ended up tossing the rest the next day. Definitely "been there, done that" and won't plan on reliving the experience.
For truly remarkable sandwich ecstacy, try Rhea's market on Valencia. -

Been shopping here for 3 years.
Live across the street: extermely convenient. I think I went in here TWICE yesterday.
Yes, the turkey sandwiches are amazing. Be prepared to stand in a long line to order your sandwich during the weekend, especially on a sunny day when everyone is headed to the park nearby.
The rest of the food/alcohol is pricey. And the produce can be limited sometimes.
I had a great experience a while back when I was sick: was checking out with advil, 8 bottles of gatorade, and some canned soup when the cashier told me "that's not what you need", left, and preceded to come back with 3 containers of their daily made HOT chicken soup. He charged me for only one. An awesome kindness. I won't forget it.
They had whole roasted turkeys and homemade pies this past Thanksgiving, too. Not sure if that's a new thing but I don't remember that going on the year before.
So ya: pricey but convenient. I love it. -

PROS:
Very good turkey sandwich
High quality everything
Lots of unique imports and organic food
CONS:
Poor customer service consistently from the dark haired man at register. NEVER smiles. They really should put someone else at the counter. -

When i went to go at USF, i would pretty much eat here all the time. The turkey sandwich are always fresh and so good. I would recommend the dark meat turkey sandwich to everyone, its really juicy and good. Parking is hard to find but well worth wait for the food.

I love their selection, but I'm not a fan of the $5 minimum for debit cards--that's right, debit cards, not just credit cards. Even after debit card reform lowered the cost per transaction, and even though PIN-based transactions are cheaper, this store will not let you pay electronically if your order total is less than $5. Seems a bit draconian to me.
(And they don't take American Express, the one card that would let them avoid a per-transaction fee entirely.) -

Summary (sandwich): Tasteless, thin Turkey sandwich and ambivalent service...no thanks!
(Disclaimer that I've only been here once, for the Turkey sandwich, after seeing it listed on SFGate as "10 best", so this review is just about the one sandwich and experience.)
That said, I've had some bland turkey in my time, but this takes the cake. You'd think that adding cheese, onions, mayo, pepper, etc. would help, but this must be some special black hole turkey into which all taste and flavor gets sucked into an alternate universe. Complement the bland with there not being enough meat to cover the roll. Oh, "service"...same black hole as the flavor: Dude had to ask three times which cheese I requested, no eye contact, slide the sandwich bag across the top of the counter (no "here ya go" or "thanks", or whatever).
Thumbs down for the food, the service, and for whatever unschooled sandwich eater put this on the SFGate's "10 best" sandwich list. -

the cute little neighborhood market that could ..........
I live a hop skip and a jump away and before Whole Foods blew into town (it's a love hate love relationship for me) I'd pop in here rather regularly for some last minute dinner items. prices are a bit high, selection is not the best, but it's cute and close and that counts for a lot.
but their turkey? now that's where they shine! I don't know that I've had a real turkey sandwich (meaning not that deli turkey stuff) anywhere but at home the day after Thanksgiving. it's such a treat! I'm with Jen K., the veggies could have been a bit fresher, but the turkey is delicious! and on dutch crunch (really good DC, by the by) forget about it! heaven. -

This review is specifically for the roast(ed) turkey sandwich.
I don't go traditional (no mayo, pickles, all that crap) - I just get dutch crunch with the turkey (both dark and white meat), lettuce, tomato, and cucumber. It tastes the way driving to the beach with the top down feels. I will say that.
Also, it's just over six bucks for a whole lot of sandwich. Amazing. -

All I have to say is: Fresh Turkey sandwich on a wheat roll with all the fixings and cheddar cheese. One of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. That's all.

WHO WANTS A TURKEY SANDWICH!!!!!!!!!!
Their turkey sandwich is sooooooo good. They use actual cuts from turkey, the cuts are thick and big and most importantly, VERY delicious. Since I live 2 blocks away, I would get the cold turkey sandwich and heat it up with my microwave for 30 seconds for the cheese to melt (this was actually my boyfriend's idea). I initially thought the bread will be soggy after you microwaved it, but surprisingly, it's not soggy at all! (I heat it up in its paper package still). The cheese will be nicely melted and the bread will be nice, crunchy, and warm. Sit down for a nice movie and just relax with the warm sandwich in your hands.
SO GOOD. I just got so hungry writing this.. Good thing I live 2 blocks away!! -

Great sandwiches (even have fresh roasted turkey), good coffee, and friendly owner. They have a deli and it is also a grocery store with lots of items to choose from.

Someone asked me if the turkey sandwich from Arguello Super Market is any good and this was my answer, "Only the BEST turkey sandwich I've ever had!".
True story and I've seriously had about a billion turkey sandwiches in my 24 years.
How do you beat turkey carved from the bone to order? Or freshly baked dutch crunch bread? Slap on some cranberry and you've got Thanksgiving every day!
Now we all know that people in San Francisco do not like to walk even a block, I'm happy to say I'm willing to walk 10 blocks from my work to pick up this sandwich.
Yum! Best turkey sandwich ever! -

Good neighborhood market that's a block away from Golden Gate Park. They make some pretty yummy sandwiches and sides that you can get for a picnic in the park. For a small market, they surprisingly have a lot of products. I can always find what I want.

Get the roast turkey sandwich. They roast whole turkeys here so you could get white and dark meat. The price is not too bad ($6.74) and they put enough meat.
Will definitely come back. I say 4 stars! -
Review from Tamar D.
Arguello is in my hood and has anything that I could likely want. However, on this fine Easter Sunday, after a lovely hike in the park with my favorite four-legged companion, I happily strolled into Arguello for a bit of indulgence on my also-birthday weekend.
What I didn't expect was my purchase to be served with a side of bitch. I don't know what it is about blondie behind the register, but she needs an attitude adjustment.
It's a good thing I had the Lord's ascension in mind today, otherwise I may have had to deliver it. -
Review from Miriam W.
Turkey sandwiches are not exactly the stuff fantasies are made of, now are they? But a friend of mine said he'd read the turkey sandwich here was so good that one food writer claimed he could happily eat one every day for a year.
On this advice, we picked one up (along with a salami sandwich) to take to the beach. And while good, possibly even better than any other turkey sandwich before it, it's still not something I'm in any rush to eat again.
And I certainly wouldn't want to eat it every single day for a week, much less a year.
It should be noted, however, that we did not have cranberry or mayonnaise on our turkey sandwich. Perhaps these are crucial components to bliss and by missing them out we were denied deliciousness? It's possible...
Or maybe turkey's truly as uninspiring as I always imagine it to be. -

So, when I used to live down the street I would shop here all the time, but since I moved, I'm never really in the area.
Luckily for me, after Bay to Breakers it was close to 1pm, I was close to a hangover and starving and I happened to walk by Arguello Supermarket. Decided to get me a sammich. and holy shit,
PROCIUTTO SANDWICH
Best sandwich in the world. How do I know this? I ate half and saved the other side to eat when I was sober, so I'd know for sure if it was good or not and it wasn't just the excessive alcohol talking.
Try it. And don't forget to add chz and avo!! -

Okay so I never thought I could get a less than amazing sandwich from this place but today it was meh.
The veggies were not fresh, seemed like day old or something? The bread was slightly stale too! Maybe they didn't a shipment on sandwich stuff because it was labor day? Who knows.
Also just an FYI about arguello- if you ask for pepperchinis- forget it! Out of the last five times I have asked for them, they've actually made it onto the sandwich maybe once or twice. Grr.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I have to say that I agree with all the reviews stating this place makes the BEST TURKEY SANDWICH EVER because it does...literally.
This is a high quality sandwich. They roast their turkeys right at the counter so it's always fresh and oh so moist and tender.
Oh and two words DUTCH CRUNCH...turkey and dutch crunch just might be the best pairing in town. Fresh vegetables decorate the sandwich and of course I always add avocado. You are definitely paying for quality with this sandwich.
Bring this bad boy to the park and have a bottle of wine in hand and you will definitely enjoy yourself. -

Disclaimer: This review is for the deli ONLY. I realized that Arguello Super Market's products are all terribly overpriced, so do not come here to do your grocery shopping.
With that said, the World Famous Roast Turkey sandwich is delicious. It's not a garden-variety turkey sandwich because they roast the turkey every morning! Get it with Dutch Crunch and pepper jack and you will be just in love. Try to go early because they run out of turkey fast. -

The deli and prepared foods here are so delicious! They have that homemade taste but look very fancy. The market itself is very small so I don't do most of my grocery shopping here. In fact, I really only come here to buy coffee grounds, high end crackers and prepared foods from the deli.
You must try their sandwiches when you stop in. They are decently priced and very filling. There is a reason so many people rated the sandwiches with 5 stars - it's because that is what their sandwiches deserve. -
Review from Luis C.
This grocery store http://media4.ct.yelpc... is a popular spot for USF staff & students, who come to buy sandwiches, salads and soups from the deli section. http://media3.px.yelpc...
It's a mini super market with all the basic products (produce, frozen food, etc.) but since I've never bought any groceries here, I have no idea if the prices are comparable to other markets. For years now, I've only purchased sandwiches and drinks. Note that the cashier guy can be a little testy.
And yes, their famous turkey sandwich http://media4.px.yelpc... is probably the best in SF. http://media2.ct.yelpc... Well, at least the ones I got were always excellent. Can't beat the $5.99 price.
Finding parking is almost impossible around this place, so I suggest parking elsewhere and walking here. It's located next door to that sushi nazi place Okina Sushi.
I have no idea what happened to the pics I uploaded many years ago. Seems like Yelp purged all the pics uploaded by previous reviews of this place.Listed in: Sandwiches for lunch

For less than $7 you can get one hell of a turkey sandwich with avocado and provolone on dutch crunch. Shockingly, if you are here to buy a box cereal, it is almost the same price.
Come here for the deli, for the roasted turkey and the pasta salad. Come here for the fast sandwich makers and to get away from school for a few minutes. Come here for Seattle's Best Coffee (or go to Velo Rouge for Blue Bottle Coffee), for little snacks or coconut water.
But whatever you do, do NOT come here for the cereal. -

Yup, bang-for-your-buck deli.
For the price, by far my favorite sandwich in the city.
I used to always get the "Famous Hot Turkey" sando, which is amazing, but have recently branched out to pastrami, salami, deli turkey, and proscuitto.
Being happy with nearly every sandwich I have eaten from Arguello, and wowed with a delicious proscuitto sandwich for $7, I give this deli my stamp of approval. -

San Francisco, CA
The sandwiches are pretty good. In fact, the sandwiches are the only criterion I have for judging this place, as I've never stepped foot inside it. But I've had the sandwiches for going on five years now, and they're usually great, sometimes spectacular, and every once in a while disappointing.
So why only three stars? Well, I had potato salad from here recently that really didn't agree with my stomach. I recently had surgery as well, so I'm sure the potato salad by itself didn't cause the pain, but I know it aggravated it, and I have a feeling either the mayonnaise or some other ingredient was expired or going on expired.
Thankfully, I still had some prescription painkillers on hand, but if I hadn't? Well, I might have sued Arguello Super Market for my emergency-room visit. I'm kidding. I think. -

Some of the best deli sandwiches in town and their well-stocked shelves have saved many a dinner with items you won't find at your average corner store. Arguello Super is like a mini, locally owned Whole Foods!

Review from Mike C.
Maybe it's just me. After reading several friends' reviews about their highly touted hot turkey sandwich, I made a weekday afternoon stop here for lunch. When you enter the store and walk up to the sandwich/deli counter on the left, you immediately see the whole turkeys turning in the rotisserie oven. I ordered their trademark sandwich with pepper jack cheese on a dutch crunch, holding mayo. After the sandwich dude quickly put mine together, I headed to the cashier's line and paid for my meal. Perhaps, it was my "great expectations" again, but it just wasn't "the best ever" sandwich for me. When I bit into the second half of the sandwich, it did taste better, probably because the turkey meat was more tender and the fresh turkey flavor finally came out. Would stop in if in the neighborhood, but not a destination place for me.

Really yummy hot turkey breast sandwiches can be found here!
But beware of the sandwich makers who seldom get your order right.
Also, if you're a pickle afficionada like myself, make darn sure that you ask for some pickles on the side too! This place for some unknown reason rations pickles so on the average, you get only a quarter thin slice of pickle per half sandwich! Shocking and unnecessary! -

Okay, perhaps the moderate-to-high(ish)-priced grocery selection is another story... but the DELI is BOMB (does anyone still say that?). For all the right reasons:
1. Affordable
2. Friendly, efficient service
3. Fast-moving long lines (honest)
4. THE VEGGIE SANDWICH
5. THE VEGGIE SANDWICH
Right, so, as a vegetarian, I have not experienced the orgasm that must be the "famous turkey sandwich," but I can assure you that this veggie delight is so. well. worth. your time & dollas. The veggies are fresh, the bread is YUM, and they do NOT skimp on the avocado. The portion is big enough to last me two meals (although I have been known to devour the whole thing in one sitting, like most other normal eaters), and did I mention that it's just $4.99?! If you're worried about the line during the lunch rush (and understand that there WILL be a line), call in your order ahead of time & waltz by the grumbling unfortunate others.
Also, the guys working the cash register are friendly in that oh-hey-I-see-you-all-the-time-so-we-acknowledge-ea ch-other-civilly kind of way, which is cool and all... but you should ultimately come here for the sandwiches. If that wasn't already clear.Listed in: In My (Vegetarian) Dreams

This is a review for the actual market and not the deli as I haven't tried anything from there yet.
Everything is pretty much overpriced. I wouldn't go grocery shopping here unless you really needed to for some reason... though Safeway is only 7 blocks away, has a larger selection, and better prices.
I'll have to try the turkey sammich some day, but the market itself is meh. -

When a deli/market is frequented and adored by SF residents, you know it has to be good!
What I've Had: Off the bone Turkey Sandwich, Chicken Chili, Sides
What an AMAZING turkey sandwich this is. The turkey is carved off the bone right in front of you for each and every sandwich. The breads are delicious (love the Dutch Crunch) and all of the toppings are amazing. Make sure to ask for the cranberry sauce as well!
As a non-beef eater, I haven't had a good chili in FOREVER but the chicken chili here is also worth the full 5 stars. I tried a few other soups and they are ALL amazing and made fresh daily. You can really tell that Arguello market uses super fresh ingredients. I've had some sides as well (potato salad, pasta salad, med salad...etc) and they are all superb! Haven't had a single thing I didn't like here.
This is a market so there are a few seats but definitely isn't really a sit down/date type of atmosphere. However, the market is spotless and super organized and also has a ton of great grocery options as well. Absolutely love this place and for an amazing turkey sandwich in the city, this is a MUST go to spot.Listed in: Best Sandwiches (Cold)

It is so dangerous to have this place just a few blocks from my apartment. Whenever I'm in need of a pick-me-up, I head over to Arguello Market. They have an amazing selection of candy and ice cream, and just too much good food in general. Their turkey and rotisserie chicken sandwiches are also to die for. Such a great place!

Review from Linda T.
According to their in-store sign, this is the "Home of the famous Turkey Sandwich!" I've had the Veggie Sandwich and recently I decided to try the Turkey Sandwich. Veggie Sandwich is not that great compared to other places I've tried (Royal Ground and Lou's Cafe). It was really bland and... boring? You can tell the Turkey Sandwich is made with good quality ingredients because they roast the turkey in-house and the meat is really tender and juicy (think dark meat). I did like my Turkey Sandwich, but I think this place is still a little overrated. It's also a little pricey - sandwiches are around $7-$8. They have all the ingredients right, but once again the sandwiches are too bland and basic for my taste. Throw in some sauce or spread or somethin'! The sandwiches could use more flavor, that's all.

Their sandwiches are legit. Each one is made with love no doubt. The market has a great little selection, especially if you live in this hood and are willing to pay more to shop local (and at a Mom and Pop.) Shopping there made me feel quaint.
