2 reviews for Area 51
Okay, here is my rather biased and EXPERT review of the club I have been haunting for years. First off let me explain that this review is rather complex as my relationship with this place is one of love AND hate. The love trumps every time but it's kind of like the love one has for a family member-like you can't get out of it. This place is entwined with my history and has even become a venue for which I have developed and experimented with various aspects of my character.
The first time I came here-like a decade ago-I was impressed and almost overwhelmed. It is gigantic. A friend and I were checking out all the local clubs to write reviews on (back when Citysearch was hot) and I think this was our last stop.
Eventually I came here with friends on occasion for their fabulous 80's night.
Not long after I became a strange sort of regular-strange in that I would come primarily to dance (instead of drink and mingle), and often I would come alone and not talk to anyone unless they approached me first.
About 3 years ago that changed when I got to know one of the dj's and we became fast friends, and then I started meeting other staff, other regulars, etc. etc.
Now I still go to dance-usually on Saturdays-but also to hang out with my favorite bartender friend, or flirt with the bouncers (and they all do a fantastic job of looking out for me too), or even chat with the owner who is a super nice guy. I've been to more Fetish Ball's than I can remember and as such they fail to titillate me. What always gets me is DJ Jeremiah's sets which are wonderfully, sonically, eclectic-always danceable and more than a few times have taken me to some amazing places. My own music library as expanded exponentially due to haunting this place as he often plays something new and yummy.
What bugs me about this place? Well-it is a bit run down and it is an old building, not as flashy flash as say The Hotel. The clientele has aged just as the club has aged so there are less hot bitches and boys than in the beginning-but there are still some lookers. 80's night just annoys me these days as it is chock full of goofy kids wearing dayglo spandex and ballet flats (none of the chic styles of the actual 80's actually...it's weird). Friday's are fun. Saturdays are the best. Wednesdays...in my opinion just suck-I'm not into Karaoke.
People come here to dance which is wonderful and there is plenty of room.
I will probably continue to do so until it falls down, or Miah quits.
Went to the fetish ball last saturday night. I have to give it to Area because Utah has the worst night life ever but this club was pretty awsome. Lots of people showed up for the ball all dressed up. It how ever didn't get to crowded that you couldn't move.
