Skeptical going in. Sad I didn't have more cash on hand. Sorry to go!
For me, there were two reasons I'd want come back -
1) Karri's Addictions: her sweet and savory cheesecakes are probably the best cheesecakes i've EVER had. I purchased the white chocolate for CPIK at $3/slice. Although really rich (we couldn't eat it in one sitting), we kept fighting over it through the day and ended up demolishing it 5 hours later.
2) BBQ Pulled Pork: Wow. Overwhelmingly packed, the pulled pork sandiwch was just...devine and cheaply priced at $6/sandwich. There are sauces to the side that you can flavor your sandwich with, each homemade.
I'd make the 20 mile drive out of Fairfax just to get another bite of either sandwich or cheesecake. -

The farmers market at the Green Barn is a highlight of the week. I have probably bought and enjoyed produce and wonderful baked goods from everyone there at this point. They have all been wonderful, but my five stars is a directed at the two MUST HAVES when you visit.
1. Magic Mike's - pure and simple this is the best BBQ in 50 miles and is among the best I have ever eaten. The pork BBQ is the perfect flavor and is not overwhelmed by vinegar or sauce. It is just the right amount of smoke - enough to flavor but not overwhelm and it is delicious tender meat. The Brisket and ribs rock as well. If you like BBQ you must stop here and try Mikes stuff.
2. Fruit - on the left just as you get in are some kind folks who grow peaches, apples, cherries, plums etc. Hands down this IS THE BEST FRUIT I HAVE EVER EATEN. Their black cherries are amazing, the yellow peaches should only be eaten if you are ready to have juice running down your arm, and the Honey Crisp apples in the fall absolutely rock.
These two keep me coming back every Sunday. -

I've seen this place a couple of times driving by - it's only open in the warmer months on Sundays. It's easy to get to - it's right off of Interstate 66 on Old Tavern Road in between I-66 and the town of The Plains.
I've always been intrigued by the idea of Farmer's Markets - but I've never taken the time to visit one - which is strange given my interest in cooking. Well I had decided earlier this week that this Sunday was going to be a gorgeous day out - and that I would trek out west to check it out (The Plains is not that far from Haymarket).
I pulled in and there were lots of folks checking out and buying the fresh farm produced produce - lots of vegetables and fruits. Most were under small tent or canopies - I was just about to leave when I noticed there was more to see! A whole inside area with vendors of all sorts!
So I wandered through - there were all sorts of delicious organic and homemade goods to be had - salsa, guacamole, baked goods, jellies, jams, honey, maple syrup, arts and crafts - I was very impressed! I tasted a Virginia made Beef Pepper snack, beef jerky, pickles, salsa, and guacamole. I ended up buying a couple of the Beef Pepper sticks - 2 for $3.00.
I also bought two tomatoes and a small container of fresh jalapeno peppers. I was sorely tempted to buy several pints of the fresh black raspberries - but that can wait until next time! -

I live just down the road from this market so have visited during different times of year. Early in the season there were very few farmers with fresh produce compared to other markets in the region (it was mostly crafts and prepared food), however, this one has a terrific variety of stuff--from the fresh produce to prepared foods, meats, live poultry, eggs and many craft vendors--jewelry, wool products and knives to name a few. In fact, there is a craft fair there 12/6, 7, 13 and 14, 2008--so contrary to an earlier review, it is opened during the colder months. Across from the barn there is a smaller building that sells rustic furniture. It's typical hours are Sunday 10-4, though I don't know exactly when they start and stop the market.
As far as handicap accessibility, there is a gravel driveway with gentle slopes but no stairs. -

Just left this Farmers Market. The produce was REALLY nice. HUGE red tomatoes, along with other fruits and vegies. I also stopped by Magic Mikes after reading one of the reviews and brought a few things home for dinner. The bean soup was unbelievable. The pork BBQ sandwich was also really good, and the potato salad was like nothing I have ever tasted. This will become a regular stop for me for the remainder of the market's season!

This is a great local farmer's market. They're open on Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm, May through October. They always have a nice variety of fresh locally grown fruits and veggies, as well as fresh meats from local farms and sometimes local cheeses, honey, etc. Inside the barn you can find local crafters, and fresh baked goods. Stopping by on Sunday mornings has become part of my weekend routine.
